The Best Restaurants in Galveston, Texas | Eater Houston

"No matter where you are in Texas, indulging in platters of smoked meats is always a good idea. This low-key, Bayou-inspired breakfast and lunch spot offers riblets and Cajun boudin by the pound, alongside hearty plates of brisket. Highlights include pork and oyster-packed sandwiches, as well as Cajun classics like étouffée, drummies, and jambalaya. The no-frills interior is serviceable but the food holds well for takeout — making this an ideal pre-picnic spot." - Brianna Griff

Came here twice on Saturday and going back again today on Sunday. This place is a jem, the employees are friendly and the food is not only good but reasonably priced. I did prefer the lunch food over breakfast, but I’m going back for the biscuits and gravy. The boudin balls!! Them boudin balls weee amazing. They were not mushy, but perfection. The fish was fried just the way I like it and the potato salad tasted just like my mom’s. Restaurant was clean, but gave good ol small town/ grandma’s house vibes, which I loved. I forgot to mention the cupcakes, the icing is homemade and I’ll be grabbing some more today.

Google
Leo’s Cajun Corner is a true hidden gem! I really appreciate that it’s not corporate-run—you can feel the difference in the atmosphere and the food. It’s authentic Cajun cooking done right. The boudin balls were amazing—crispy on the outside and packed with flavor on the inside. We were hoping to try the stuffed crab, but they were out this time. No worries though, just gives us another reason to come back! One thing I want to mention is the lady who helped us—I could tell she may be partially deaf, and I just want to commend her for her kindness and great service. She was attentive, patient, and did a fantastic job. Great food, great people. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Yum. Amazing cajun food. Perfect customer service. Everything is smoked and melt in your mouth delicious. Best potato salad and smoked chicken I have ever had. Riblets were also good. 🤤

Google
Great Cajun and Southern food. This place has been here for years with consistent great food. The fried fish was succulent and had great flavor. The sides were equally as flavorful and satiating. This is a Galveston staple.

Google
100% fresh and delicious. Crab cakes and fried shrimp were fresh and crispy! Jambalaya was just spicy enough. Wish we lived closer this would definitely be on repeat!

Google
The riblets are fantastic no wonder they are known for them! And we really enjoyed the fried chicken wings definitely worth the wait(12 minutes) and really enjoyed the po boy!!! Will definitely be coming back next time we’re in town!

Order at the counter and pick a table. This is our first time. We had the catfish supreme tray (fried catfish covered in etouffe) very very very good. And the crab cakes were delicious also (and large). This is enough for two people., if you are not so hungry. We came before any rush so it’s quiet. We will be back.

Google
I've been wanting to stop by for the last 5 years, and I'm so glad we finally did! I bought smoked boudin and crawfish boudin out of the case, and it was just outstanding. Great flavor and texture. We also ordered the Friday shrimp plate special. I got the rice dressing side, and my husband got the cole slaw. We absolutely loved both, and the shrimp was fantastic! They were big, juicy, and so flavorful. We'll definitely be back!! If you've driven by this place for years and always planned to stop, today's the day!

Yelp
This place opened in 1991, the current building in 2009, Leo's has firmly established itself as a bonafide classic food joint. It may be on Broadway, but it has the feel of a quiet neighborhood corner joint. The customers all seemed like regulars. No tourists here! Service was kind and quick. Order at the counter. The food was a mistake a mix of prepared foods under heat lamps or in a steamer, or freshly fried dishes. I opted for the fried shrimp plate - 10 shrimp for $16.99. I expected them to be under a heat lamp but they were fried fresh and it didn't take long for them to bring me my plate - fresh and hot. The shrimp was nice and crispy and deceptively spicy! How I've missed this place I have no idea. They also process meats here and have a display case to the right of the counter containing boudin, sausages, jerky, and various other items. This place is the real deal. I'll be back.

Yelp
No frills or bells and whistles... just AMAZING food Yelpers. My coworker recommended LCC and boy was Mikey right. Leo's serves the best Cajun food in Texas. I tried a little bit of everything as you can see by the pics I took while I devoured my food. The lady at the counter was helpful and friendly. The boudin balls were delicious and the ribs were very tasty as well. I have placed Leo's on my 5 Star Platinum List of places you must try when in the Galveston area. So let be written... So let it be EATEN!!

Yelp
While they aren't the most authentic, the shrimp poboys here are pretty good for the area and price point. The coleslaw is surprisingly a nice addition to the sandwich. I choose Leo's over most places in Galveston whenever I want a poboy.
google avatar

Yelp
Whenever I find myself in Galveston, a visit to Leo's is an absolute must!Their boudin, po'boys, and gumbo are simply irresistible. (Although, in my opinion, the crawfish étouffée didn't quite meet my expectations.) Leo's is a no-frills establishment, embodying the essence of both Galveston and the charming stops you'll find while driving around Louisiana. There's no glitz or glam here; just good, honest food that speaks to the heart of country and bayou culture.

Yelp
I'm an out of towner! And this was delicioussss! I tried an upscale restaurant in Galveston and this was BETTER than that! This will always be my go-2 spot! 5 stars!

Yelp
Solid 3 everything was really lack luster. The customer was great! Really nice people working here that's for sure. Good: we got a mix of things here. Sausage sandwich, boudain balls, fried shrimp, and gumbo. Oh the cupcake was probably the best along with the gumbo. Everything was heated up and very lack luster. I will give them this though, the gumbo was pretty good. I got chicken and sausage. Everything else was very subpar. The cupcake was great! The customer service is really good? Really nice e people working here. I probably won't be back but maybe you will like their food better than I did. Everyone's tastes buds are different.

Yelp
We decided to try this place base on internet recommendations. When we walked in, it looks like an authentic Cajun dinner, you order at the counter, then they will bring the food to you shortly. The food is surprisingly good! We had their fried catfish, bean & rice as well as the assuage sandwich. All taste good!

Yelp
Authentic and time tested fare. This is NOT a trendy venture by an up and coming chef. This is what such a chef seeks to emulate and fold into "new" ideas.' No, this the real deal common man's fare that only a regional restaurant in a port city can pull off for over 3 decades. This is the mom and pop place that is still doing things the right way. Using Cajun spices, smoke and good quality ingredients to make its food the staff makes like a Cajun mama would. Their potato salad is the most mustardy potato salad that ever mustard. I'm not a spice lover but I can recognize this is good Cajun food.

Yelp
Being a Louisianan, I had to find a place that served some great comfort food and when I found Leo's, I had one of the best meals ever on the island. Nice portions, customer services, etc. Look forward to going back!

Yelp
The food was amazing! Perfect Cajun! The staff was super kind and attentive! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Yummy food -- the catfish was fantastic! Super casual but fun to go grab lunch. Service was great!.

Yelp
The food was exceptional! The chicken was just right and the ettouffee was very good and the stuffed jalapeño was good as was the boudin ball.

Yelp
I had the two smoked breast plate with red beans and rice and sausage and potatoes sides. Large portions and enough food for two separate meals All of it was delicious Friendly staff and a clean dining area
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
I definitely do not recommend this place. The chicken was so dry. I had to throw it away. I had a whole half a chicken two sides. I just wasn't fresh and it seems like it was just old and stale and everything just was old and stale. I don't know and I've tried tried several places here I can't get a good barbecue. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Sorry it's just I was very disappointed.

Yelp
Smoked Boudain, Tasso, and smoked Andouille are completely on point here. We had Shrimp and Oyster Po' boy's along with the absolutely stunning Seafood Gumbo. All dishes were excellent and well seasoned. Chubby lady up front could use some help with her people skills. Seems more annoyed than helpful, but hey...It's a cajun place and she ain't cajun. Bwahahahaha! It's great!

Janine Q.

Yelp
The food was excellent! We ordered the gumbo, boudin balls, shrimp plate, red beans and rice and jambalaya. The portions were huge and delicious! I would have loved a little more kick to my gumbo, but I wasn't sure where the hot sauce was located. I saw another employee bring out a bottle to a table, but we were almost done eating at that point. I was so hungry and interested in trying this place I didn't pay attention to the pricing. I was a little shocked that for 3 of the 4 of us eating side dishes that the total was $56. We only had one full meal, and when I computed the items, it didn't seem to add up. So, I would caution newbies to pay attention to the total pricing...

Yelp
Great food and awesome service. Great location and the ambiance is amazing. Would recommend to family and friends.

Yelp
The food at Leo's lived up to the reviews. It's a small place with big flavors! Everything that we ate was good.

Yelp
Great spot for boudin, red beans/rice, and many smoked meats. Generous portions. Get the potato salad.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast bowl!! Have recommended to friends visiting the area as a necessary pit stop!

Yelp
The moment you walk in the door you smell the wonderful Cajun flavors. Leo deserves 5 stars for the over-the-top friendly service and his wonderful offering of Cajun comfort food. We stopped by for an early lunch and learned Leo serves lunch anytime of day. The place is not fancy but has a down home feel. Leo made us feel at home and welcome. They were not crowded. The menu is posted on large signs over the counter. There is a meat counter near the counter with Cajun sausage and a warmer with boudins. Leo proudly told us about the sausage filled fried boudins. We ordered a crawfish po' boy ($6.25) and a oyster plate with jambalaya and cole slaw $10) Everything was incredible. The crawfish were a little spicy with a nice breading and very filling. The sandwich is huge. The oysters were flavorful with a gentle breading that was also good. The jambalaya were delicious with large chunks of sausage. We sampled the gumbo which was out of this world. Leo does not make his gumbo with a thick roux but uses more of a soup base. The gumbo was packed with shedded pork and sausage. There was a great spicy flavor. Our server was friendly and the food came out quickly. Prices are great! On Sundays, all plates are $8.95 all day. There was a kid's menu with options from fish to pb&j. This is a must visit place in Galveston and should on on top ten for Texas. We're going back soon. My advise..... go early.

Yelp
What can I say? It is 100% legit and delicious. I was told by Vernon who is an engineer at the hotel I was staying at- this was the only Cajun he eats at. A local referral is a hold nugget to me so if we went for lunch, My hubbie and I split the plate - ordered half fried catfish and 1/2 fried fish with sides of green beans ( has bites of ham) and potatoes with sausage. Banana pudding for desert. Did I tell you this is a mom and pop type of shop with home cooked food? Nothing fancy but just really good food. Catfish was fresh - it did not taste like " dirt" and hot, crispy and delicious. Shrimp was likewise very tasty, My hubbie wolfed the banana pudding - his only complaint- it was really small. What else they have? A counter of smoked meats sold by the pound. Yes, they do!!!! Lastly, they have standing flyers on every table saying " bring your Turkey, we will smoke it for you! " Highly recommended- you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
The food was great, we had the catfish platter with crawfish étouffe on top. So good. Loved meeting the owners, it's a nice family run business.

Yelp
The first time we tried the place it was so good, we had to come back for more! Idon't know what it is about this place but the batter that they use to fry is soooooooo amazingly good! Seasoned to perfection - their fried shrimp and stuffed jalapeños. I wish they offered a larger portion for shrimp (combo plate comes 10 pcs with two sides). They're stuffed jalapeños were 3 for $3.50.... they were so good, we had to go back and order a second round. I would definitely recommend this place if you want good food and don't want to break the bank with tourist Galveston prices.

Yelp
At home visiting family and OMG Leo's is always on the agenda. The riblets are a must try and don't open the bag in the car to taste because you will not stop eating them. These are the most flavorful, juiciest smoked treats in Galveston. You have got to grab a bag and if you love out of town get some to freeze. They are delicious in greens, gumbos, etc. There are a lot of other smoked meat products and food meals to go.

Eugene Scott D.

Yelp
If you spent 4x more, I don't know if you could find a better etouffee. The gumbo is excellent too. I had the potatoes and sausage on the side, very good as well.
google avatar

Loretta D T.

Yelp
I can not seem to find anything to like at this place - I'm sorry to be horribly honest BUT the ribs are so delicious yet so BAD for you. FYI - They advertise on their menu CATFISH and it's definitely not. I'm not sure if it's tilapia or what. It's just so deceitful, in more ways imaginable! I can't believe that it's acceptable for the owner to LIE to customers. It's not catfish! Anyway-you've been warned. BeK :-). I'll also add that a couple of coworkers have ordered a catfish meal and have also declared & confirmed it wasn't catfish,,,sorry!

Yelp
THE BEST GUMBO ON THE ISLAND! Gumbo diner doesn't even come close! I do consider myself an expert, considering I grew up in Louisiana eating Gumbo, homemade andoullie sausage and boudin. If you want REAL Louisiana cooking go see Leo! He and his staff are very nice, food is excellent and priced fairly.
google avatar

Preston I.

Yelp
Saw all of the great reviews and decided to get some food to go. Came in around 5 PM on a Saturday and decided to order one of the $11 plates. I got a mixed plate of rib tips and crawfish boudain. Huge portions and even bigger flavor. This was my first time having crawfish boudain, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The rib tips were decent, but I wasn't a huge fan. I should've gotten spare ribs instead. The plate came with two sides. I chose jambalaya and potato salad, and both were great options. I don't like most people's potato salad, but this one was homemade, classic, Texas potato salad. You're not gonna get much in terms of ambiance or a dine-in experience, but the great food and the reasonable price warrant 5 stars. I'll be back very soon to try some different options.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is my favorite local spot in Galveston. Never lets me down. My go to are the ribblets but the best thing on the menu as of now for me is the Jambalaya. Perfect. Great employees clean and timely. I'll be back

Kery M.

Yelp
Tremendous shrimp Po Boy and the Jambalaya is off the charts! Nice cabin place with lots of homestyle food.
google avatar

Yelp
Love everything here. The ribblets are the best and spicy. The staff is always helpful and friendly .

Yelp
Great family owned business with delicious Riblets. Me and my family enjoyed the meal and the owner sat with us briefly to listen to our praises about the food and Riblets. I will be definitely be stopping by again.

Yelp
Everything is AMAZING! We came for lunch on our anniversary weekend & honestly this place is better than any of the restaurants on the strand or sea wall! Definitely worth the trip!
google avatar

Yelp
Me and some friends were in Galveston celebrating a birthday and decided to try this place because we wanted some takeout from somewhere local. This place has the best most authentic creole food I've had outside of Louisiana!! Highly recommend their jambalaya, chicken and sausage gumbo, and boudain balls. Can't wait to find myself on the island again so we can come back, everyone loved what they got.

Yelp
Owned by Leo DiCaprio, Leo Sayer and Leo DaVinci (which is quite a trick since he must be super old by now), this Cajun place is vastly underrated and under-visited, and that is to the detriment of those who visit Galveston and don't get the chance to eat this excellent New Orleans-inspired fare. What to get: Jambalaya, Boudin Ball What's not that great: Gumbo What's interesting: Pork Chop, Riblets, BBQ Sauce What else: Might be the best meal in the Gal. Speaking of in the Gal. Don't eat too much food here or you'll put on weight and will no longer be able to play football quite like Leo Messi. Stopped in here because not too many cheap eats type places in Galveston had good reviews. Ordered nearly everything on the menu because the prices are so... damn... cheap. It was a good move. We had a lovely meal, with the Gumbo being ok, the Pork Chop, Riblets and Sauce being interesting and different, and the Jambalaya and Boudin Ball being absolutely top notch. It's a shame more Yelpers don't rave about this place. Would definitely come back again. Lovely service too, and plenty of cafeteria-style seating available. Anthony Boudin loves it too, apparently. So does Leo the Lion and Escargot Leo Leo Leo.

Yelp
**LONG POST** (Visit #1): This morning (7:46am), I walk into Leo's and ask the front counter girl if they had any "plain" pigs in the blanket. They cost $1.50 each/$4.25 for three nowadays (the photo is from July 2020). I had already looked in the display case and did not see any. She goes to the case and begins filling a container with "cheese" pigs in a blanket. I refer to the sign that shows "PLAIN / CHEESE / JALAPENO" and tell her that I want the "plain" ones. She looks confused and asks another person who says that more "plain" ones would be ready in 30 minutes. I tell her that is okay and that I would be back. (The Phone Call): I call at 8:28am and speak with "Leo". Told him that I was there earlier and was wondering if they had any of the "plain" pigs in the blanket ready. He says they were ready when I was there before (?!?) - I let him know that the person at the counter said they did not have any when I was there. He said that they have them (now), and offered to hold three for me, so I gave him my name. I hear him call out to someone to hold three plain pigs in the blanket for me (he gave them my name while we are on the phone). I thanked him and said I was on my way. (Visit #2 - same day): I get there in under 10 minutes. Same front counter girl. I let her know that I was there for some "plain" pigs in the blanket. And she says they do not have any. I tell her that I just got off the phone with Leo and he said that they had some and he was holding three for me. She goes to the back. While she is gone, the person who said that they were cooking more WHEN I WAS THERE THE FIRST TIME tells me that they have no "plain"! I let an f-bomb drop when I say, "You were the one who told me that you all were cooking more -- and I just got off the phone with Leo who said that he was holding some for me!" I'm flabbergasted and pissed because I am hungry as hell and have driven there TWICE at this point. (Goes downhill quickly): So, now, here comes an older lady and Leo from the back. I explain what happened and point to the sign, and she argues that the sign does not say that they have "plain" -- all they have is cheese and jalapeno. (PLEASE REFER TO SIGN IN THE PIC) Then to add insult to injury, she says that "plain" was a special order and that I was supposed to order them because they take 30 minutes to make! I tell her it would have been nice to have been told that when I was here the first time because usually they make them and put them in the display case. We go back and forth about the sign and I'm like I can read, I did go to Rice University, and the sign says, "plain, cheese, and jalapeno" (because clearly, they feel as I have a lack of understanding and cannot comprehend why I am upset with having come back TWICE and having been lied to by Leo on the phone). She gets all mad and says, "Well we are uneducated...-- I cut her off and say, "You don't have to go to college to know how to read a sign!" (Call the cops!): Leo (who never says a peep about the lie he told me) loses his temper and tells me to get out and that I was trespassing and threatened to call the cops. I told him that he needs to stop working (retire), called them all a bunch of idiots and left. What begins as a discussion of why it was so difficult for me to get some "plain" pigs in a blanket turns into the police being called? WTH? (Calling it): Instead of admitting that they never made any more "plain" pigs in a blanket and that he lied on the phone about having them to begin with (or placing them on hold for me), Leo quickly pulls a card from the racist toolbox "let me call the police because you are trespassing" because as Jack Nicholson says, "He can't handle the truth!" You see, Leo is old and crotchety, so people just let him be the bigot that he is. There are quite a few people of color who work at Leo's as cooks, dishwashers, etc. and I cannot help but notice that they are all super quiet, yet watchful. You know, like blacks were back in the 1940's and 50's? I get the distinct feeling that they really need their jobs, otherwise, they would not be there - because Leo is a piece of work. (In closing): Leo, you need to retire immediately (if not sooner) -- and you and your staff needs to LEARN HOW TO READ!

Yelp
While I wanted to love this place, and felt the price was fair, my family was undewhelmed by the food quality on a large takeout order. The good: Shrimp Po' boy as well as Crawfish Po' boy were favorites, and we would order them again. Banana pudding and bread pudding were tiny tiny but tasty. Okay: Sausage roll, crabcake Awful: Stuffed Jalepenos (what is is stuffed with? better ask...). We took one bite and threw them away. Stuffed crab - mushy stuffing was all we could taste. I mean, I just think there are better places on the island if you can afford to pay a little more. Whatever you do, ignore all the mentions of jalepenos until you find out exactly how they are made and decide if you like those ingredients.
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
Every time we are in the area we have to stop by and get the boudin balls and jalapeños!! Delicious and the catfish is delicious too, good food and good service!
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Everything was great. Fried shrimp, crawfish boudin, jambalaya, boudin balls were all top notch. Friendly service too. I'll probably try the ribs next time I go. They seem to do everything right.

Yelp
I had lunch here last weekend while visiting Galveston due to it being bookmarked from past Yelp reviews. Parking is easy due to the restaurant having its own parking lot. There is indoor and outdoor seating here. Walking in, you go to the counter and order. Reading some fellow Yelp friend reviews I decided on the riblets and potato salad for a side. I also ordered a cup of the chicken and sausage gumbo. I tried the riblets and potato salad first. The serving of potato salad was huge. Easily enough for two people. It is mustard based and was cold. However, I thought it was a little dry. To me, the riblets were just ok. The sauce they give you is good but I am not much of a rib fan to begin with so my opinion about the riblets should not count. Finally, the gumbo was very good. South Louisiana quality! Even though my one experience here was mixed, I believe this is a good place to eat and will still give it a 4. I would be happy to return and try some of the other menu items including their daily specials which really looked good.
google avatar

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Very nice prices. They make their own boudin. Huge boudin balls. Good oysters. Spicy shrimp. Great coleslaw. The jambalaya wasn't as good as your get in Louisiana. Too much andouille and no red sauce in it. I think I saw something green like a bell pepper The people were wonderful. Very nice. Brought food to you. A little mom and pop joint.
google avatar

Maddie V.

Yelp
This place is soo good and the prices are unreal. We've gotten the green beans (peppery with small pieces of ?ham), jambalaya (w/ sausage), brisket (slightly peppery), riblets, Boudian balls, etouffe, etc and everything was delicious! They serve their dishes with jack miller's Cajun bbq sauce which is really unique. I love this place and will continue to stop by when I'm in Galveston.

Yelp
Don't mess the little gem as you zoom down Broadway ST the main road here on the island! Leo's is a great meat market and Resturant for specialty meet and seafood. Hands down The BEST crawfish boudin spicy delicious not to mention the gumbo and cheap breakfast!Leo's is a local favorite that transcend color and class so you know the food is yummy. Support local island small businesses especially here for all your Cajun needs! The prices are affordable food is always fresh and hot so it's a no brainer!
google avatar

Sherry W.

Yelp
Leo's Cajun Corner has some good food. I must say they get a lot of business and the food is fresh and delicious. They have a variety of food plus they serve breakfast. This is a must try if you're in Galveston and looking for some cabin food. Beware, the food is spicy. They serve from breakfast to dinner.

Yelp
We've visited this place for years on our trips to Galveston. I love the riblets and boudin balls. You can stop in early morning or evening, but one thing for sure the food is hot and ready to go.

Yelp
One of my favorite stops when coming to Galveston. It is very casual and somewhat reasonable. I have been coming to Leo's for a long time and remember when they were just a small trailer on a huge lot and nobody knew who they were. Some of my favorites include: Riblets Anything with sausage Smoked boudin link Potato salad I was not a big fan of their seafood gumbo, it was just too bitter for me. They do have plates of several of their entrees and of course smoked meats sold by the pound, but you can get 1/2 lb orders as well. If you are hungry or just want to try a little of everything it will probably be a la carte and it can get pricy. For example, I recently dined here for lunch and spent about $16, but I did take home 1 riblet and part of my boudin I couldn't finish. This is the best cajun food spot in the area, save for Abe's in Clear Lake.

Yelp
Honestly I don't know what the hype is all about. Maybe because it's only one or two cajun places in galveston. I ordered riblets and sausage and it was just okay. I came to this place based on yelp reviews and it was a miss for me. I opt to have my sauce on the side. I thought it would be bbq sauce but it taste like picante sauce and it was very thick. On the bright side Customer service was good
