The Best Healthy Restaurants in Boston | Bon Appétit

"Life Alivehas been making quinoa and vegetable concoctions before they were called “grain bowls.” In fact, founderHeidi Feinsteintold the Boston Globe that when she opened her first location of the vegetarian and organic cafe in Lowell more than a decade ago, “Nobody knew what a beet was.” Now, with two locations in Greater Boston, two in the ‘burbs, and a menu that focuses on “health and vitality,” Life Alive is, well, alive and well. The menu features a variety of salads, smoothies, wraps, and grain bowls like “The Alchemist:" quinoa topped with kale, sweet corn, carrots, sesame seeds, sunsprouts, and a choice of tofu or sprouted legumes, topped with a ginger nama shoyu sauce we can't stop thinking about." - ByMelissa Malamut

Outstanding!!! Get the Mediterranean chickpea wrap! AMAZING and plenty enough to share! Minestrone is thick and full of delicious vegetables, the strawberry lemonade was so refreshing, and the service and atmosphere were perfect!! Best place to eat in Lowell, hands down!❤️

Google
Amazing vibe in Lowell and the food never fails to impress, great quality and taste! The Adventurer bowl is my go-to order 10/10 would recommend

Google
The food is excellent, vegetarian and healthy! The atmosphere is colorful and eclectic. You order at the counter and then pick a table, and they will bring the food to you when it's ready. I always order one of the bowls: The Adventurer, I think, and a smoothie. Filling, delicious, and healthy.

Google
Best best best The atmosphere in here is like stepping back in time to an idealized version of 1968. Hippies being helpful eating good-for-you-food and.. feeding the masses . Thing is, the food is great, delicious, the smoothies are rich and thick, and all of it is healthy, vegetarian food. I wish we had one in New Orleans. I love it here. Thank you for staying forever young.

Life alive is a hidden gem in downtown Lowell! I love how cozy it is there and the food is always so fresh. Also a plus that they’re pet friendly :) I usually get the same bowl every time and I add chicken from home into mine for extra protein haha! Their winter tumeric tea is one of my favs and the cacao mousse is a great sweet treat.

Google
One of my absolute “fav” restaurants that feature both delicious and nutritious food. My favorite warm bowl is their Swami… 💯it’s so flavor rich! Can’t go wrong with their dishes and they seem to have something for everyone. Try them out… you can thank me later! 😉

Google
The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. The food was excellent and I'm disappointed that there isn't a restaurant like this in my town. I had the Fool 2 noodle bowl and the flavors were amazing. My husband had the Buda bowl and he loved it. I highly recommend grabbing some lunch here. We will definitely be eating here again soon.

Yelp
If you're in the market to try mouthwatering nourishing food, life alive is the place to try. As a regular for 8+years , I have YET to be disappointed once . Not only is the menu inclusive for all foodies , but the boho chic spiritual ambiance ties the experience together . Upon ordering , I am consistently greeted and helped by the most amazing staff followed by fast attentive service . Prices and portions are fair , (but to be honest I'd pay outrageous prices for any amount of their food .) From smoothies to warm succulent bowls , life alive will have something for you. My personal favorites are : The Emperor bowl, the Nori w& the Fool II . I cannot say this enough, but stop by for a visit you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 8 years and while the food is still good other aspects of the experience are slipping. Please bring back the iced water dispenser. Please!! It was such a nice touch and great looking. Just posting up 2 bottles of Luke warm water is not cutting it. Similarly I continue to miss the large Buddha painting that made the space such a vibe. Very haphazard now and I don't understand what happened.

Yelp
Food: Avocado Chocolate Mousse is my favorite thing ever, SO yummy. I love their wraps as well, they are so warm and filling (good breakfast)! Service: Food is always fast, managers were really friendly as well. Ambiance: Cute, old store. Definitely a different vibe to the Life Alives in the city, but it's cool to see a location out in Lowell!

Yelp
I probably tried just about everything on the menu but I always go back to the green goddess. Definitely give the green goddess a try! (Don't forget the hot sauce!)

Yelp
Went here on a whim and decided to get the Mediterranean wrap, 5/5 fantastic meal and will defin be back for more

Yelp
Overall score 3.8 out of 5 This is an old vegetarian place. The food is OK but personally, I prefer to have meat. Overall, the breakfast burritos were pretty flavorful. Cold brew was OK. Location is cool Staff is friendly Personally, not a place I would go back to overall it's OK.

Yelp
Love the salads here - so flavorful and filling. My favorites are the living Caesar and avocado greens. The living Caesar has a rich cashew dressing while maintaining a delicious cheesy tasting Caesar flavor. It comes with crunchy chickpeas, capers, and cashew Parmesan. The avocado green salad has the encrusted avocado on top of pickled onions, romaine, cucumber, and corn with a tasty tomato vinaigrette. I don't like olives so usually replace that with tomatoes instead. The soups here are on the thinner side, which I don't mind. I had the cauliflower soup, butternut squash, and vegan chili. The vegan chili was really flavorful and had beans, tomatillos, and corn. They're still nice options since it doesn't leave me totally full and can enjoy a salad. I also ordered a juice and smoothie - neither are very sweet but that works for me since I prefer tasting the ingredients it's made of! Nice staff and definitely a lunch rush. It's nice to come off the lunch hour to enjoy the food more leisurely.

Yelp
I ordered delivery so I can't say much about the service but the food on the other hand was amazing. We got the rainbow and green goddess. Amazing flavors with every bite. The downside was that there wasn't a lot in the bowl, wish there was more but that could be cause I ordered for delivery. Good place for healthy foods. I would like to go there in person to see how the shop is.

Yelp
I love the feel of this place--a warm and welcoming staff that seems to care about its mission. You won't find meat here; however, you may find a new affinity for power foods. I've come twice and haven't been disappointed with any options. My favorite so far has been the teriyaki shiitake, which was bursting with umami flavor from the mushrooms and really came together with the teriyaki flavor. This is a great place to enjoy a wholesome meal not offered by many places. I will be coming back!

Yelp
I love life alive. I love takeout without the guilt. Your meals are always delicious, filling, and satisfying!

Yelp
Its been a while since I have visited this location, and my last meal at life alive was about 1.5 yrs ago in Salem, MA. However, I used to eat at the Lowell location regularly. Unfortunately today I learned that the menu has changed. Many of the excellent bowl options have disappeared from the menu and the demi portion is gone. I would purchase 2 items If I could get a demi bowl and would spend more $$ but I instead now will have to get just one big bowl. The Emporor bowl, Lover and other options are gone. One person in our party literally cried when her favorite (emporer) was missing. She tried to "make one work" but it wasn't right. The worst part of the experience was that alll the veggies in the Rainbow Harvest Bowl were overcooked. My daughters Green Goddess Bowl- which is her regular item also had much overcooked veggies, the sauce was too thick and blobbed on top with an avacado segment on top that looked - ugly and bad. What has actually happened to the nice flavor of the looser flavorful dressings? Why are the veggies soft instead of gently cooked to bright color with more flavor, al dente? Everything about life alive used to taste fresh and look fresh and bright. This was a very different and disappointing experience. I would love to know if this was an off day, a poor prep/cook or if this is what it is now.

Yelp
Amazing even diehard carnivores will love the choices available at this eclectic eatery just across the street from the New England Quilt Museum. Caution for those sensitive to spice, the Southwest Sol has raw jalapeños- seed and all! Lavender lemonade was define and the hummus plate has a wonderful garnish of baked chickpeas that added a little crunch. Will definitely visit again next visit.

Yelp
I Loved this place. Not only was the food amazing, but the environment was so welcoming and comfortable. The service was amazing as well, everything was as we ordered it and the staff have amazing energy. I ordered the teriyaki tofu and it was absolutely delicious. I recommend this place to everyone!!!! Don't miss your chance to visit this beautiful establishment.

Yelp
I love getting food here, very filling and wholesome. I'm also always in a rush, and they are always on time, which is impressive during lunchtime

Yelp
Great, filling food ! Refreshing juices ! The friendliest service ! Laid back vibes !

Yelp
The service was awesome my server Jaylynne was awesome. Restaurant needs a little work as far as ambiance is concerned. I had a mango slush that was ok. I had Greek tahini that was tough to swallow. There was something about the salad that's very tangy and made my tongue itch. I love a good salad and this salad wasn't satisfying.

Yelp
I was visiting the quilt museum and found this place right across the street. As a beverage girly, I was super excited! and ended up ordering a Betta Carrotene, Iced Mexican Chocolate, and a Watermelon Cooler. They were so good it made me glad I don't have a cafe near me, otherwise, all my money would be spent on lattes and juices. For my meal, I ordered the Green Goddes Bowl. Filling and comforting, it tasted like something I'd make at home. Next time I'm in Massachusetts I'll definitely be keeping an out for a Life Alive Cafe.

Yelp
Great selection of vegetarian food (I'm not a vegetarian, but I loved it). The Green Day smoothie and Blonde Miso soup were awesome!

Fred B.

Yelp
Gone Downhill. My wife and I have eaten here for many years. We are vegetarians and like their warm bowls. Plenty of flavor and protien. However, we were disappointed with our visit on 13-Jun-2024. My usual choice, "The Emperor" bowl, was dropped from their menu. I had the "Adventurer" bowl and my wife had the "Rainbow Harvest" which are bowls that we have ordered before. However, this time both of the bowls were drenched in the sauce (soupy) and extra salty. This is a major change from our previous experiences with their bowls. What a shame that the quality has gone downhill. Not sure if this is an exception (new staff) or their new practice. Too soupy and too salty!

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Love Love Love. Its so nice to eat at a place that has so many healthy, vegan options. Great service. Great atmosphere.

Liz S.

Yelp
The food is consistently delicious. And the Elvis Alive smoothie is a thing of beauty to this dairy-free girl.

Yelp
LOVEEEEE life alive. I could eat there everyday. Love all of the different bowls and salads. Great food quality. The swami is my absolute favorite. The service is awesome, everyone is so friendly.
google avatar

Reyna R.

Yelp
Awesome clean, satisfied, healthy food. Love everything about this place, juice are amazing. If you want a very healthy, with lots of flavor, try this place in restaurant, they have many locations.

Jacob O.

Yelp
I wrote an email to the email address accordingly. Similar experience to the one I had in person at the store, no response at all. Not sure if it was an automated one??? Again, the food was below average and not great for the absurdly high price point. Also the wait time did not reflect the quality or amount of food given. The staff does not provide great ambiance or a welcoming experience at all.
google avatar

Yelp
had a smoothie from here for the first time! it was delicious and staff was dope!! I got the love child and I recommend it!

Yelp
Nourishing delicious food that helps you feel good about what you're putting in your body!

Yelp
hungover asf and probs still leftover drunk. For some reason I gravitated towards life alive cafe. The atmosphere is very granola earthy crunchy and rustic. I think it's very welcoming. I got the super berry açaí bowl and it was really smooth. Presentation was pretty too. The vanilla cold foam cold brew was good too. I think everything here tastes fresh and you see it being made. I come here often and usually get avocado chocolate pudding or their chocolate that just melts in your mouth. The avocado pudding sounds intimidating but honestly it's just like chocolate pudding.

Yelp
I LOVE life alive... I have been coming here for at least 4 years. I always get the adventurer bowl *drool* BUT let me tell you.... in the last year or so... it's gotten meh. What once was an enjoyable, CONSISTANT bowl is now a "hit or miss" with mostly misses. Recently my bowls are FULL of stems, with hardly any of the "veggie". Kale leaves are less than the kale STEMS. It is AWFUL. The same thing goes with the broccoli! This bowl has turned from 2% stem to about 70% stem in comparison to the actual veggie. Also... there is supposed to be a cheese/something sauce in the quinao, but more than half the time they don't put it in there anymore. I would order here once a week, now I order here once every few months... always with the same disappointments. PLEASE go back to how you USED to make things!!

Yelp
I just tried this place for the first time, and I am so glad I did! I'm definitely hooked, I had their Caesar salad, which was so fresh. The dressing was clearly freshly made. The portions were perfect and I like how they use Krispy chick peas instead of croutons, so it definitely feels so much healthier. I had their iced blue latte and oh my gosh I can't even believe how good it is. I love how it's only lightly sweet, so you have no guilt after everything just taste, so fresh, natural and amazing. I can't wait to try other things on their menu they have a new avocado toast that looks amazing. I wish I had pictures to share but honestly the food tasted so good I just ate and drank in happiness . And the staff were all so friendly, professional happy people.

Yelp
I've been coming here for decades? Multitudes of years. It's always fresh and filling. Get cheddar on it and you'll never regret it.

Yelp
Expensive but worth the quality! Cute ambiance and they have books and free wifi. Cool spot in downtown Lowell

Yelp
Always love the food and ambiance at Life Alive. Great people and never a long wait for our order.

Cali J.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a few years because I no longer work in the area but used frequent it probably once a week. Menu is great & love the wheatgrass shots! My only complaint (and it may not be relevant anymore) was the wait time.

Yelp
This is my most favorite place in the whole world, after home ofcourse. I have been to their 2 locations so far many times and this place never disappoints. I have drove to Cambridge sometimes just to have food from here and I am not even kidding. So I think I can write a book on this place but I would not bore fellow yelpers with my essay. Here is what I like: (MOSTLY EVERYTHING) Based on the location you go to the menu changes so make sure you check and order before you head there. We ordered Rainbow Harvest and the Adeventurer bowl, love alive smoothie and matcha hot latte with oats milk. The food as usual was amazing, filling, clean and just simple yet flavorful. The best thing about eating here is you don't feel crazily full but at the same time your heart is satiated. Personally I love the adventurer more than the Rainbow harvest as I love the sesame ginger Nama sauce. But I would eat anything here even if they start having meat only and that's a big deal for someone who has never tried meat in their life. I also absolutely love their green legumes, tofu, beet, corn and avocado. You might wonder what's so different about all these veggies at Life Alive. I would like to tell you the food has LIFE here. Each morsel is so flavorful and none of the items overpower the other. The matcha coffee was so so good with all natural ingredients ofcourse no sugar and the smoothie had no overpowering ice cubes in it (no ice cubes in fact) which I love. Would definitely recommend anyone to come and try this place. Hope they open one in NJ/NY AREA so that I can go live here. Lol. This is one of the few places which did not compromise on their taste post covid! Visit this gem of a place fellow yelpers and share some love!

Yelp
I am obsessed with their Green Goddess bowl here with any of their delicious cafe drinks. I always order extra sauce. The service is a bit slow during rush hour, ordering ahead usually solves this problem for me. Parking is always available. Although there is limited space, it's a really great spot to get some work done as well.

Celena L.

Yelp
Great food and amazing service, beautiful oasis, ambiance is on point you gotta check this place out, very boho, vegan friendly and dope artwork
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. Their food is awesome, filling, made so healthy and yummy. Their staff is friendly, helpful, and have great recommendations. I wish they would keep branching out and make it to CT!

Daniel A.

Yelp
I've been stopping in to Life Alive periodically for a few years and it's always such a nice experience. The meals are super tasteful and nourishing. You can feel the love that goes into the food. They take extra to care to source their food and you can tell are using better quality ingredients. It's a greatbusiness model. They have several locations I've also been one in of the Boston locations and it was awesome.

Yelp
It's just alll that everthing in this place is really really really we need more more good food your best wealth is health for sure 10 stars

Yelp
Amazing food. My favorite place to order in Lowell. You actually get what you expected when ordering
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Firstly, the actual restaurant space is nothing special. The chairs are hard, and it was cold in there, (it is a cold March day), BUT the food is fantastic. We ordered the shitake miso soup, it was good but a little too spicy for us. We then had the swami bowl and the sesame shitake tofu salad. Both were really really good. Worth the half hour drive here. If you like healthy, vibrant vegan and vegetarian food, this is the place to go.

jean j.

Yelp
Super food a must try. I will definitely go back there are so many dishes to try. My son told me about this place. You've got to check it out.

Yelp
Food is good but customer service is awful. They seemed so confused. Ambiance is pleasant.
google avatar

Alexandra G.

Yelp
I got the green goddess bowl. I'm not much of a salad person and I loved it! However, I did think it was a little pricey for the portions you get.
google avatar

Karen 2.

Yelp
food is so great here! I only give 4 stars because i do wish there was an option to add bacon bits or some sort of meat protein, but i do understand it is an organic/vegan cafe.. the lavender lemonade is great too! the atmosphere and staff are lovely & take action to reduce waste as well.

tj j.

Yelp
Love their salads. Also the ambiance is really cute in Lowell! Good Service. Only thing that can be improved is the quantity served.
google avatar

Yelp
This review is not a slant on Life Alive... I love the food and people, and em thankful that Lowell has it. If you have not had it, please go and your body/mind will thank you! That said, it boggles my mind how this business (Lowell location) has been around for a good while now (10 years yet)? And still can't handle a lunch rush like a proper shop (30+ minutes for a wrap, and the woman across from me must have waited at least that for a quesadilla). It has to be intentional at this point. It literally boggles the mind. I would honestly love to get behind the counter there and understand if that's the way it has to be, or if they just refuse to figure out how to run efficiently. There is a perfect picture that encapsulates the operational mindset here (I will post it too). There is a food pass counter halfway down the counter that is too high on the service side. So tall that some of the servers can't adequately reach customers food or see what each dish is. The solution? A wooden block that servers (and from what I saw today, customers too) step up onto to reach the food, then stepping back down to go serve it. It is hilarious, and perfectly Life Alive-esque. But if you owned that business, wouldn't that give you workers comp anxiety?
google avatar

Vaughn H.

Yelp
The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is the staff is not always helpful. You can ask "hey, are the to-go orders going to be on the rack by the door?" To which an employee would say "yes" just to have to wait and wait and the order is at the front counter. Also don't bother ordering the meal plan online. The staff is clueless and needs coaching.
