The Best Restaurants in Northwest Portland’s Slabtown | Eater Portland

"More than anything, Life of Pie is likely famous for its $8 wood-fired happy hour margherita pizzas. But beyond that, all of Life of Pie’s pizzas are worth the trip, especially one particular pie topped with salami, Mama Lil’s Peppers, goat cheese, and honey — a nuanced blend of spiciness, sweetness, and creaminess on a charred, chewy crust. The modern dining room is especially nice in summer, when it spills out onto the sidewalks of Northwest 23rd Avenue and onto the patio." - Alex Frane

Just stumbled here today with my boys. Walk up counter to order with excellent service. The garlic bread is more like a garlic pizza which was divine. We are it all. The Caesar was enough to share the large and delicious. We ate it all The two pizzas which were New York style delicious. Meaning your pie piece folds in your hand. We would have eaten it all but after all that food we were stuffed packed it in a box and will eat for leftovers. What a fantastic find and will be one of my favorites to come to visit with my boys.

Google
This place has always been good, but somehow it’s gotten better. The how is that the pizzas are bigger??? Don’t know if I just got a fluke pizza or if they just legitimately make them bigger now but either way I’m delighted. Absolutely divinely delicious.

Google
The pizza is great and they have incredibly fresh ingredients. The price point is perfect for the quality, they could honestly charge more. The only flavor that didn’t come through was the pepperoni. But the others made up for it. There is one big downside, you have to bus your own table. I kind of hate that. I’m paying and tipping, I don’t want to have to do everything. Overall it’s awesome and great seating outside if it’s nice out.

One of the best pizzas I've ever had! The dough is excellent and the ingredients are very fresh. The place is clean and the service is great. I will definitely come back again 👌🍕

This was a great place to relax and refuel after our hike. I love the spacious seating areas with wooden bench tables both set indoor and outdoor. I like the efficiency of placing my order and getting my drinks for that no-fuss, laid- back atmosphere we were looking for. Food was delicious too and was brought to our table as soon as it was ready. We ordered pizza, salad, and beer. It’s hard to beat their $8 margherita pizza and $6 beer at Happy Hour (everyday at 11am-6pm)! There are clean restrooms are located in the back area of the restaurant in a hallway that require an access code. We will definitely return here the next time we are in town.

One of the best pizzas I've had in a while. Life of Pie has delicious food, friendly staff, plus a clean and chill atmosphere. I tried the wild mushroom pizza and added bacon, which was a tasty choice. Their fried ravioli was also a good appetizer. I would definitely recommend this spot to others and will be back!

Google
It's very tasty. It's been a long time since I ate such a good pizza.

Google
It was alright tasting pizza. It's not the best and not the worst I've had. Decent for the area. The lady working the counter was friendlier than most other people I've encountered in this town. Quick service

Yelp
Incredible pizza! Love how it's personal pizzas at this place. My girlfriend and I loved it and even took it to a nearby park for date night. We got the Build Your Own Pie and added vegetables and arugula. Would highly recommend! We are pretty picky with our pizza's and reviews, so this place was spot on and great.
google avatar

Yelp
The seasonal mushroom pizza was delicious. The truffle oil melts on your tongue. I wasn't a fan of the crust. It's super dry. Otherwise, the entire pie was delicious and light to eat. Love the seasonal mushrooms too. A great kale and arugula salad. Very easy to accommodate for vegans.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Nice, clean atmosphere. Order at counter and they bring your food out to you. Food: The pizza is very good for the price. Neapolitan style so you know what to expect. They have some Chili Oil and Pepper available on the table as a topping. Really love the thought put into the plating to put something on the plate that can drain any oil so that the pizza does not get soggy. Price: Price was good. The $8 Margherita Pizza for happy hour (which lasts pretty long) is a great deal. Service: Order at counter and bus the tables yourself. Staff was friendly. Parking: Street parking near 23rd. You can usually find a spot within a block or two.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Solid pizza at a reasonable price! Your pizza will be about $15 and there's a day that they offer almost half price margherita pizza. If you arrive late enough then the neighboring library parking lot will be open for use saving you trouble of finding street parking. You'll have to bus your own table. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Yelp
It's the salami for me. We were walking by and wanted a quick bit. This place looked low key but with good pie. They also have salami which I don't see very often so I had to ordered it. The sauce to flavor ratio was perfect and the salami had just the right about of flavor. We also had pepperoni on one half and it was just okay. The place is simple and you order at the counter. You also bus your own table. So this is a 3.5 place but could be a 4 if I try other things on the menu.
google avatar

Erika T.

Yelp
Order first then sit down and the rest is self serve (drinks, togo boxes, and bussing your own table). Margarita Pizzas are $8 during happy hour which is so worth! I usually don't get pizza but this place didn't disappoint. The pizza was perfect thickness and wasn't soggy. Although it was a simple Margarita Pizza, the portion size was just right for me. You can order their preset pizzas or build your own. Would come again if I was back in Portland!

Yelp
Pizza wasn't anything to write home about but the kale salad was to die for. Atmosphere was great and service was fast and accommodating.
google avatar

Yelp
If you have a family this a great place to go, basic pizza with basic toppings. We got a pizza (~$17) with meat, kale salad, and spaghetti with sausage ($2 up charge for meat on pasta). I have to be honest and say there was barely any meat whatsoever on either dish which was disappointing considering you pay more for it. The pasta was about 8 bites for me and done. Aside from that, the kale salad ($14) was tasty but was essentially a pound of kale and dressing and that was it. But hey, simplicity seems to be this places' thing! If you're into that, you'll love it. Everything we ate was good, don't get me wrong but, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. The seating was incredibly cramped to a point where people's rear ends were in our face while they shimmied past us in the narrow walkways between tables. Nonetheless, the staff was incredibly nice and attentive! All wonderful and helpful. Just a little pricey for the quantity of food but still tasted good.

Yelp
I've been looking forward to trying this pizza for so long and what a disappointment because of an insane wait. I have always seen people enjoying the pizza when I stop in at the bottle shop across the street. Today we drove down a couple hours from where we live and stopped in on a Friday afternoon. The line was short, but once we sat down we had to wait over an hour for our pizza. I finally asked someone where our pizza was and they apologized and asked if we wanted beverages while we waited. I would have rather just left because we had other places we wanted to go that. Unfortunately they make you pay upfront, otherwise we would have just left. Once we got our pizza it was fine. The real irritation was seeing people who sat down after we finally got our pizza, get their pizza a few minutes later. I wonder if there is an issue between to-go orders and in house sit down tables. If there is a huge wait because of to-go orders that should be said. Or tell to-go orders they will be later. There were plenty of open tables in the restaurant when we got there and only two people in front of us when we ordered, so I have no idea what happened. But waiting over an hour for a mediocre pizza is ridiculous. We will not be going back.

Yelp
While roaming around downtown Portland we happened upon this pizza place and decided to see what's going on. We heard from locals that this was a good place. The offer indoor and outdoor seating , which on a day like yesterday would have been great either way as the sun was out. You order at the register and then sit anywhere with your number and they bring you order to you We had a sausage and peppers pizza pie and a glass of the house red wine ( only one by the glass). The pizza can be a personal pizza or shared as we did. It's 4 good sized slices . We shared as we planned to experience more food along our journey. The pizza was great and you can tell it was in a legit pizza oven by the crisp of the crust. Perfect amount of cheese , sausage, and bell peppers. The wine was a good pour and went well with our pizza choice. If we were only going to eat here I would have ordered 2 pies. They also have salad , white wine, soft drinks, and beer.

Yelp
Loved coming here! They were open later than any other restaurants in the area, which was great, because we wanted something fast and easy, and it was already getting late. We called ahead and placed our order, and by the time we arrived at our Uber, the pizza is ready. It was thin crust, a little stiffer than Neapolitan style pizza, but still delicious, and they had a truffle oil to accompany it. That was also very yummy. They had outdoor seating available, and the staff was so nice to let us sit there even though we were not dining in, and their location is in a quiet and safe area that still feels urban so it is a nice place to sit and enjoy your pizza. I'm pretty picky with pizza but had heard about this place and of the other places I've tried in Portland this is the only pizza I would circle back to Thanks!

Andy M.

Yelp
Pretty good. But in a pizza town like this, It's a 3. I ordered a pepperoni and mushroom and a Margharita. The Margharita is definitely better, but too salty. I understand this is a thin crust pizza, but the pepperoni and mushroom is too thin. Both are medium good pizzas. The margharita at Ken's blows this one away. Trying to work my way through pizzas in Portland without giving myself a heart attack. My number one is still Scotties. My neighborhood pizza place (Pocket Pub) isn't on anyone's radar but I'd rate it higher. Based on Yelp reviews, I'd say it's a bit overrated.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Ambiance is great, it's clean and an open atmosphere. Parking is a headache so be ready for that. We came at 10:59am, 1 minute before opening. They had the doors open and music/lights turned on. Person at the register said, "sorry come back in one minute when we open". Not a huge deal but more of why leave the doors open and everything set up when it's not even open yet. Margherita Pizza: 4/5. It's thin crust so all the flavors are in one bite. It's oven baked but ours were a bit burnt.
google avatar

Deb K.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while but today's lunch wasn't the greatest. The pizza was burnt and they didn't ring my salad up so it was missing. Oh well, hit or miss type of place. Today was a definite miss.

Yelp
Went to nob hill food trucks for lunch but half were closed so decided to walk around alphabet district and saw a traditional wood burning pizza oven through the windows of this establishment (we are suckers for neopolitan style pizza). Walked in on a Sunday just at about noon and a huge line formed right behind us in this counter service establishment. Ample indoor seating and six picnic benches with heaters out front. The menu is mainly pizzas, salad, freshly made spaghetti and some apps.. Local beers and wine too. Of course with the wood fired oven you should get pizza... They have a happy hour special EVERYDAY from twelve to six that will get you a full size margherita pizza for 8 dollars. We had half order of roasted sausage ravioli with homemade marinara (6 pieces for $7) half kale arugula salad for $7 and fennel sausage and pickled pepper pizza for$17... Raviolis were freshly fried and not greasy, served with simple homemade marinara that had a very pure tomato flavor with hints of tomato and garlic. kale salad super fresh with a punchy lemon vinaigrette and toasted Parmesan Stars are definitely the pizzas.. The thin tender yet crisp charred bubbly chewy crust is stellar... Super thin traditional neopolitan style. Excellent helpful service, clean relaxed atmosphere... Definitely stop in for a pie and a pint!

Yelp
AMAZING! perfect portions and we had left overs. I recommend taking your crust & dipping it in the chili oil that you see sitting on the tables. FUEGO! There's sitting inside and outside. Located on a busy street, but super cute to walk around. We shared half the Cesar salad, which was perfect. I recommend picking your first choice of pizza, then coming back to try others. Ingredients may sound questionable, but don't fear. You're making the right choice.

Yelp
Went here again on a cold day. Ambience is just like I remember. Warm, casual, lively. Best time to come is during Happy Hour to get their 8 dollar Margherita pizzas. It used to be 7 dollars, but the markup isn't too bad. Wouldn't pay any more though, even though the pizza is AMAZING! We started with the fried raviolis like we always get. Don't pass this down, it's hot and crispy and warm and cheesy in the inside. Plus it comes with cold marinara sauce, which is perfect for dipping your pizza in. This place also comes with a DELICIOUS pepper oil at all the tables. It gives your food this awesome kick. The Margherita pizza was super fluffy and hot, and the marinara sauce was sweet. Words don't describe this place well, come here for some delicious pizza! Just make sure to come during Happy Hour :)
google avatar

Belen L.

Yelp
Good pizza . Thin crust like I like it. Customer service was nice, surprised that they didn't get annoyed of me considering all my questions. Would come back to try the pasta . I like all the wood incorporations !

Yelp
Had a friend introduce me to this place and I am sold! They have indoor and outdoor seating, and happy hour includes their margherita pizza and a drink. The large Caesar salad easily feeds 3 people and their pizza crust is deliciously soft. The Caesar is okay. Nothing special about it, and not a lot of croutons. The mushroom pizza was DIVINE. No complaints. Everything about it was wonderful. My friend got the margherita pizza which she is a longtime lover of. This place is mainly self serve minus someone bringing the food out. They've also got a lot of beverage options which I appreciate! Mushroom pizza 10/10 Caesar salad 7/10 Margherita pizza 10/10

Yelp
I can't believe it was my first time trying this place! Came into this restaurant without high expectations but left feeling like I needed to come back again immediately. We couldn't stop thinking about the food for days after having this dinner! We ordered, seated ourselves, and bussed our tables afterwards. Food took a little longer than expected but it was totally worth it. We can't stop thinking about the spaghetti, one of the best we've ever had. They have outdoor seating (perfect for this warm weather) and lots of tables indoors as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Heard of Life of Pie before my visit to Portland. Ordered a Margherita personal pizza for pick up. It was delicious and perfectly made. Although we arrived a couple minutes before closing, staff was so kind to let us spend 10 minutes eating our togo order there before heading out. Would recommend!
google avatar

Avery J.

Yelp
good food all around. nothing worth waiting in line for, but the perfect place when you want good food, good service, and no fuss. the crumbled fennel sausage makes any pizza 10x better. the caesar salad was amazing and full of flavor. the kale salad was just okay; there weren't any major toppings so it was just mouthfuls of straight kale. would have been better with some sliced apples on top or cranberries or something. overall, on a friday night when Ken's pizza had an hour long wait, we were glad we went here instead.
google avatar

Stoney C.

Yelp
Incredible. One of the best vegan cheese pizzas I've had. The crust, the sausage, the peppers, all top notch. But the reason for the 5 star review is not just the excellent food. The staff and management truly care about people and show real compassion toward the community. I was visiting a dear family friend who was in a devastating auto accident and brought to Portland for treatment. He's coming along miraculously, despite having a long road ahead. As we were ordering, management noticed and took really good care of us. I will definitely be back for the food and vibes. Highly recommend this establishment! Life of Pie gets it.

Hin P.

Yelp
Love love love the pizzas here!!!! We got the mushroom one and it tasted amazing! The crust was perfectly baked where the texture was crispy with big air pockets! To me , thats a huge plus because i usually get full pretty quickly when eating sour dough pizzas at other places . The salad was great as well , we got the arugula one and the acidity paired really well with the pizza !

Jon C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious every single time. The Margherita Pizza is light but filling, drizzle it with their chili oil and you're in for a wild flavor combo you'll find yourself coming back to. The staff is always friendly and the seating area is consistently spotless, given the popularity of the place. Did I mention the salads are ??

Yelp
Happy to see life of pie added to the nw dining scene. As good as the Williams location. Ceasar was cheesey and crispy and pizza was good. One for happy hour - half off margharita pizza
google avatar

Yanjing J.

Yelp
This restaurant is my first dinner in the Portland. The pizza is filling, too large for me. But it is very delicious. There are many refilling beverages can be choose. Let me very happy. The staffs are very nice and friendly. Thank you for your service.

Yelp
Favorite place to get wood fired pizza in Portland. They're consistent, quick, and affordable. Pleaseee get their lil mamas pepper salami goat cheese and honey pizza - it's the best.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I love coming here when I'm in the area and the happy hour can't be beat!! I'm a sucker for some yummy pizza at a killer price. The chili oil on the tables is a nice touch that takes it over the top! I wish more places served chili oil like a condiment, my goodness it's delicious. The staff here at this location were awesome! Everyone was super friendly and nice and checking in on everyone seeing how they were enjoying the pizza and what not. Highly recommend this location!
google avatar

Yelp
Went for the happy hour special, $8 margherita pizza. Pizza came out quick. We also ordered toasted ravioli which was gobbled up by the kids immediately! Convenient location off 23rd. Would definitely order again.

Yelp
Popped in on a Wednesday early evening for a quick dinner and it was an excellent decision. Food: 8/10 overall 1. Seasonal mushroom pizza-10/10: this was delicious!! I seriously loved everything about it! Just perfection and the truffle oil, amazing! 2. Caesar salad: 6/10: this had too much Parmesan cheese on top for my liking, the croutons were a little too hard and the dressing was a little salty. 3. Ravioli: 8/10: these were fresh and tasty. The raviolis were filled with just enough cheese inside and the outside had the right amount of crunch. The sauce was a little bland for my liking though. The service here is quick, also too quick! By the time we ordered, sat down we received the salad and app then 5 mins later the pizza.. I wish there would've been a little bit of a delay on the pizza because it was almost too much food for my eyes to focus on at once.. but quick service is a good problem to have :) Overall I would recommend life of pie!
google avatar

Shannon T.

Yelp
My friend was raving about Life of Pie and I knew we had to go. We got the fennel sausage, Mama Lil's pepper pizza and the caramelized onions, goat cheese, with garlic confit pizza. Both pizzas were delicious, but the fennel sausage pizza wins hands down. They have a great happy hour with the margherita pizza being almost half off. Yes, half off! Run, don't walk to get you some tasty pizza. It has a cozy and very intimate feel to it. Dimly lit at night. It's fairly quiet, but not too quiet. The spot is very clean. Everyone working there was really friendly. Definitely adding this as one of my go to pizza places.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably one of the best pizzas I had while visiting Portland Made my own pizza with pepperoni, sausage, basil and truffle oil Wow!!!! Highly recommend Life of Pie
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Uhhhhhmazing, delicious pizza. I'm picky in that I have pizza opinions, BUT it's my favorite food, so bad pizza (generally) is better than no pizza. Life of Pie pizza is one of my new favorites. I live in the burns so I have been in the city much over the last few years- but I already dying (figuratively) to go back just so I can have more LOP pizza!!! Add to that a $7 Margherita pizza, and I'm ready to move in!
google avatar

Paulina S.

Yelp
Just how I remembered it years ago. Reminds me of pizza in Italy. I'm no food critic, but suggest worth trying once.
google avatar

Soni B.

Yelp
I was craving a pizza, and this spot exceeded my expectations! Food: I ordered the caramelized onion, goat cheese, and garlic confit pizza, and let me tell you, that was one of the best pizzas I have had in a while. I also ordered a Caesar salad, but I overestimated how hungry I was. It was so much food. The pizzas are big enough to share or take it to go and have a meal for later! Vibe: You order at the counter, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Arun S.

Yelp
I am not a big pizza fan, but this probably would be one of the best ones have had in a while. We had 3 different variety of pizza and all were delicious. Keep in mind pizza comes in one size and 4 slices. Crust is not at all heavy and perfectly made as well. Caesar salad and fried ravioli (smaller portions ) were good as well. Try this place out if you haven't. They have multiple outlets in Portland area . We went in on a Sunday evening and it wasn't very crowded as well.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
The $7 margherita pizza during happy hour is a steal! Came here on a Wednesday for a late lunch. The place was quiet and not busy. For 3 people, we ordered the margherita pizza from the happy hour menu, the seasonal mushrooms pizza, and the bacon pizza to share. I don't eat goat cheese so the waitress was able to adjust the bacon pizza to have half without goat cheese. Out of the 3 pizzas, the mushroom pizza was my favorite and then the margherita came in close second. For the seasonal mushroom pizza, there was a generous amount of mushrooms and the truffle flavor was distinct. For the margherita pizza, the marinara sauce was well seasoned and there was a good amount of fresh basil. For the bacon pizza, it was good but it would be better if there was more bacon. In terms of the pizza dough, it was a bit too dense and chewy for my preference. There could also be more sauce on the pizza as there were too much pizza crust. I heard the vegan pizza is great too so I will need to come back to try it!
google avatar

Justine D.

Yelp
Definitely not the cheapest pizza in town, but if you want a crust cooked to perfection and a pretty decent Happy Hour deal, Life of Pie will definitely be a contender. I have had a couple of their pizzas, their Margherita (a Happy Hour classic!) and a mushroom pizza. Both pizzas had their crusts baked to perfection. They opt for a thinner pizza, but the crust on the edge is perfectly baked with some slight char that results in a chewy consistency. Additionally, the flavor of the combinations were delicious. Their Margherita is on sale during their long Happy Hour. The cheese is perfectly melted and ooey-gooey, while the basil is crisped and mixes well with the cheese and tomato sauce. I also had one of their mushroom and cheese pizzas. It is definitely an elevated version of a regular mushroom and cheese - the ingredients are of better quality, and it results in a more complex bite. A great place to come and hang out during the summer time, and also within walking distance to many bars in the area!

Yelp
Loved getting a quick lunch from this spot! Split a kale salad and a margarita pizza between two people. Loved the kale salad and we did get the bigger one. At first we weren't too sure about it but after drizzling some of the oil they had on the table...it was bomb. The margarita pizza was good as well. A bit burnt on one side, but other than that it was good. You bus the tables yourself and I think I liked the idea of all of that because it's a quick order, pick your table, and your food will come to you type of service. Only reason why I took a star off was because I thought the big plate of kale salad was a bit overpriced. It cost more than our margarita pizza.
google avatar

Kathy L.

Yelp
Came in on a late weekday. Ample street parking. There was not a wait when we came in. Recommend online ordering and the food came out fast. We got the spaghetti and the margarita pizza as part of their happy hour. Spaghetti was just alright. The pizza with the chili oil was amazing. I would have it again. It's just a nice casual eatery. The staff was amazing and nice.

Yelp
Pizza, once great, has now twice in a row come flabby, wet, and burnt. Really disappointing. looking for a new place after years here. They dropped the ball. I told them by email and they never responded so the caring is gone.
google avatar

Beth L.

Yelp
Came for the $8 happy hour (11am-6pm) margherita pizza and was pleasantly surprised by its quality taste and texture. The dough was thin and chewy and with the toppings, it created the ideal taste of margherita pizza. My personal favorite was the seasonal mushroom pizza--it has a very distinct taste of truffle which I loved. Bonus points: the ambiance was nice and mellow and the restrooms were clean. I'm definitely coming back for a quick bite!

Markus F.

Yelp
Great authentic pizza! Crunchy and Fantastic flavors in a relaxed atmosphere. Love it.
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
Ew. Boring, uninspired crust with pretentious, goofy toppings; think "food-critic pizza." This is definitely a place that remains in business through word-of-mouth prestige alone. Flat, limp pizza at an offensively high price. Poser pizza for those who believe they are "elite."
google avatar

Brent K.

Yelp
Love love love this true Neapolitan pizza. Personal favorite for sure. Love the $8 marg pizza happy hour as well. Solid place for sure.

Jacob S.

Yelp
Would you like a pizza with bell peppers, tomatoes, jalapeños, or artichokes? Well too bad, because they don't have any of those standard toppings here. I thought the point of wood-fired pizza was to offer lots of customization options? Most wood fire pizzas are done in about five minutes, but they kept me waiting for over 30. The pizza was average at best and skimped on the cheese - not worth the high price. The bathrooms are tackily locked with a code (5754). I appreciate that they have one vegan option, but it is just as barren as their other offerings. I think I got sucked in by the cute title, but this was not a good experience, and I'm really surprised the reviews here are mostly positive.
google avatar

Julioo M.

Yelp
We had the margarita and seasonal mushrooms. Best pizza I have ever eaten in my entire life. No wonder they call it the life of a pie. Also had a grapefruit hefeweizen bier. Not beer but bier,
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food , the piazza is always delicious however decided to try the spaghetti this time and it's a hidden the gem The kale salad spent get any better - there dressing has just a slight tinge of sweetness that is complemented by the shredded Parmesan and it all comes together in a delicious mouth bomb

Yelp
From the sidewalk approach to the empty plates- Life of Pie crushed it! The atmosphere, ambiance, and most of all, the pizzas were absolutely outstanding! A well-designed dining room and outdoor seating under the party lights with heaters. Pizzas were full of flavor and sized enough to split. Excellent 5-Stars!
