Where to Eat and Drink on South Congress in Austin

"The original Rainey Street bar’s younger counterpart focuses on well-made coffee and delightful kolaches from its window perch at the Maufrais shop. Takeout orders can be placed in person via the walk-up window or online; there are outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

Little Brother Review - Rainey Street - Austin - The Infatuation

"Little Brother feels like a bar that doesn’t want to be on Rainey Street. The drinks diverge from the vodka-and-soda formula that’s more common here—instead focusing on tiki-inspired cocktails and a better-than-decent beer and wine list. There are only about four barstools and a tiny bar that feels like it could pack itself into a tiny home. But, reluctantly or otherwise, Little Brother has become one of our favorite spots on Rainey to grab a coffee and a cocktail and take a breather from the outside world. Sometimes with a burrito from that’s right next door. " - Nicolai McCrary

Where to Find Satisfying Kolaches in Austin

"The South Congress branch of the tiny Rainey Street bar doesn’t serve booze, but more than makes up for it with rotating flavors of sweet and savory kolaches from the restaurant group’s star pastry chef Lindsay O’Rourke, along with various ways to obtain a caffeine jolt." - Melanie Haupt

Little Brother Coffee & Kolaches is a tiny, to-go coffee spot, with just one small table outside, making it more of a grab-and-go location rather than a sit-down café. The service window opens onto the street, and on the other side, it connects to a hat shop, which adds to the quirky charm of the space. While there are no seating options inside, the setup creates a unique atmosphere, making it feel like an integrated part of the store. They serve all the essential coffee drinks, and as the name suggests, their kolaches are a standout feature. We tried the spinach and cheese kolache, and it was excellent—generously filled, with a thin, well-balanced dough that doesn’t overpower the filling. The pastry stays flat rather than puffing up, allowing the flavors of the ingredients to shine. This place is perfect for a quick morning stop—grab a solid cup of coffee, a kolache, and get on with your day. The convenience, quality, and unique setup make it a great find for those who appreciate a well-made to-go breakfast.

Google
False advertising. They don’t sell kolaches. They sell klobasniks (pigs in a blanket) and other stuffed pastries. Service is nonexistent. Major disappointment in every way. Edit: as you can see they also double down on the cultural appropriation by giving a droll and inaccurate history lesson on the culture they’re not a part of. As an actual Texan Czech who can make the real deal from scratch I can confirm that the dough they use is not authentic kolache dough. It’s generic pigs in a blanket bisquick that you can find at any donut shop nationwide. I would say their misplaced sense of arrogance is unique but you can find that elsewhere on Congress as well. If you want to experience real Texan and Czech flavor look elsewhere. If you want an overpriced cup of joe and misinformation drop by. Oh and when I say service was non-existent I mean that literally. I waited to get coffee for 30 minutes and the counter was as empty as a ghost town. I didn’t speak to a single soul who worked there. Another customer took pity and gave me a bite to try on the street so I could do a review. I’m not shocked at the bold faced lie. It seems to be an occupational habit for them.

The kolaches were pretty disappointing. Didn’t have much substance or flavor. The sausage and cheese had almost no cheese in it. The coffee was over priced and not great, especially considering you are charged for flavors that you can’t taste.

Small, but mighty. Friendly service - come early, kolaches go fast. This is about as local as it gets, as the baked fare comes from Better Half just a hop, skip, and jump up the road and over the river. Perfect for stopping by during a South Congress stroll, on a weekday you've forgotten to eat breakfast. 👏

Must try cookies!!!! I’ve been on the hunt for delicious chocolate chip cookies in Austin and i finally found one. The dough had lots of flavour, every bite is filled with high quality chocolate chip and the salted top elevates the flavours. Will definitely be back 🍪

Good for grab and go coffee, with friendly staff. Note though there’s no seating and no WiFi, and I of course bought coffee so I’d have a place to sit in the air conditioning and get some work done 😂 oops

A lot of pastries were sold out so go early if you want a treat! Great iced latte

Didn’t get a chance to get a kolache (which was the main draw for me) since they were all sold out (which is always a great sign too!) But the espresso was phenomenal! Would definitely go again and again.

Yelp
Little Brother's is located inside a boutique store - so you can shop around while you wait for your drink. The line took about 5 minutes, and it takes another 5 minutes to grab your drink. The store is unique and offers items to buy from Austin locals who make candles or spin pottery. I got an iced vanilla latte, and it was refreshing! Like any other coffee, it was a good blend of sweetness and earthiness. I do want to come back and try their other drinks.

Yelp
i found this place via a tiktok saying it was a "hidden gem." i got the iced espresso tonic with orange and pomegranate chai, and i kid you not - it tasted like a cold cup of pho broth. i kept drinking in hopes of finding the aforementioned notes, but i was just utterly at a loss. it was savory in an off putting way. it's located in a cute store where you can wander around and find leather goods while waiting for your coffee. the jalapeño cheese kolache was good, but the coffee was memorable in a negative way. i overheard the barista saying that he thinks he knows how to make it since he's made it twice before, so maybe it was just an off day.

Yelp
Very average, not so expensive so that's nice! Staff was friendly and it's got a convenient walk up window.

Yelp
I stopped by for a coffee fix and tried their seasonal Zesty Zombie. It's an iced espresso tonic with blood orange and it was really delicious! 5 stars for a great drink and great customer service!

Yelp
Was waiting for Tecovas to open and saw this coffee spot next to it, tried a vanilla iced latte, recommended by the gentleman taking my order. It was good, not too strong not too sweet. I do wish they had bigger sizes for extra ice so it's nice and cold, I feel like their sizes are too small so my iced melted quickly and wasn't really an iced drink at the point. Overall, I wouldn't mind having it again.

Yelp
The guy running the place this morning was having a great time standing around talking to his friend for 10 minutes, while we sat there waiting for him to at least acknowledge our presence. Nope. Looked straight at us and was as relaxed as possible standing around yapping doing nothing. No cares whatsoever. We went across the street to mañana. Way better coffee. Great service. Bummer because we live a couple blocks away, and the girl who used to do the morning shift was really nice.
