Fresh sushi, creative rolls, and friendly service in a cozy spot
"Lunchtime has been really weird this year. Besides the fact that time lost all discernible meaning, your midday meals have probably involved some combination of canned goods you bought en masse back in March 2020, your dining room table, and one of your many screens. Which is all to say, you also might be having trouble remembering how an actual outdoor lunch works. If that’s the case, head to The Brothers Sushi. The high-end sushi bar in the Valley has a cozy outdoor patio that’s secluded from the noise and bustle of the Ventura Freeway, and serves everything from stone-grilled Wagyu to sushi omakase, as well as steamed crab legs and house sake that’s made in Fukushima." - brant cox, kat hong, arden shore
"Brothers Sushi opened quietly in Woodland Hills in 2018 (in a former sushi spot that was also called Brothers Sushi), but has since become a go-to spot for all things raw fish. The menu has plenty of things for sushi novices and experts alike, all served in a bright, energetic space that feels like you’re in the heart of the city—not a somewhat sleepy stretch of Ventura Blvd. If it’s your first time, get the $150 sushi omakase. It comes with 10 premium cuts of fish, a few signature appetizers, a handroll, and dessert. On later visits, go for their chirashi that comes topped with over 15 types of seafood." - brant cox, sylvio martins
"Sushi options have certainly come a long way over the last few decades, as evidenced by this dynamic spot, boasting a sweet price point. Minimally accoutered with a dark wood counter, floral arrangements, and gray floor tiles, everything here feels refined and contemporary. The food, brought to you by veteran chef, Mark Okuda, follows suit. In addition to the omakase, the menu features such specials as a "JYO" chirashi bowl, dry-aged grilled fish collar, and Hokkaido snowcrabs. Served in a tall martini glass, halibut arrives with Japanese cucumber, micro shiso, and yuzu-spiked vinegar; tailed by such pristine nigiri as albacore, skipjack, and bonito. Close out with chewy, citrus-dabbed octopus, marinated ora king salmon, and a tuna-packed handroll." - Michelin Inspector
"Romance has been hard to come by this past year. Most of our attempts have included some combination of candle wax on the dining room table, curated pasta playlists, and locking our dog in the bedroom for companionship (then feeling, like, really guilty about it). Which is all to say, you also might be having trouble remembering how an actual date works. If that’s the case, head to The Brothers Sushi. The high-end sushi bar in the Valley has a cozy outdoor patio that’s secluded from the noise and bustle of the Ventura freeway, and serves everything from stone-grilled Wagyu to sushi omakase, as well as steamed crab legs and house sake that’s made in Fukushima." - brant cox, kat hong
"This high-end sushi bar in Woodland Hills exemplifies dining in the Valley in the best way possible. Although the energy here is laid back and casual (you can almost guarantee there will be a table of small, loud children with their parents), the sushi is first-rate. The signature chirashi is one of our favorites in the city, packed with creamy uni, sweet and succulent scallops, and fatty toro that has so much marbling it belongs in a Greek temple. We also appreciate the variety of omakase options, from the $100 lunch option to a $160 nigiri-only and $200 tiers at dinner. Not up for a trek to the Valley? Brother's Sushi also has locations in Santa Monica and Culver City." - garrett snyder, brant cox, cathy park, sylvio martins
