"This 1940s-era Creole Italian restaurant in Mid City is known for its own special twist on the classic muffuletta, called the “Frenchaletta.” Forget the round seeded loaf. Liuzza’s stuffs it all in po’ boy bread. It’s basically the opposite of the one at Parran’s (muffuletta bread stuffed with po’ boy fillings)." - Beth D'Addono, Eater Staff

"There are new owners of Creole-Italian stalwart Liuzza’s Restaurant and Bar (not to be confused with Liuzza’s by the Track), the latest round of ownership for a restaurant that first opened in 1947. Brothers Jason and George DeCastro, Erin Clark, and Michael Shelow are set to take over for the Bordelon family next week, a year after Liuzza’s co-owner Frank Bordelon died (the restaurant was on the market for a year before that, however). The brothers own sports bars in Miami, according to the Times Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, which Clark helps run, but they’ll relocate full-time to New Orleans, with Clark running the front of house and George DeCastro in the kitchen. As far as plans for the future, DeCastro might end up introducing dishes from his Filipino heritage, he told the newspaper, and Clark envisions creating an “Italian beer garden with bistro lighting” in the outdoor space." - Clair Lorell

"Mid City Creole-Italian restaurant Liuzza’s (not to be confused with Liuzza’s by the Track) is up for sale, with owners Lori and Frank Bordelon telling NOLA.com that they are selling the business to retire. They’d like to see it continue as is under new owners, they said, and will keep the restaurant open as long as they continue to own it. Known for its red gravy, seafood lasagna, and especially the Frenchuletta, a hot muffuletta on French bread instead of the traditional round, it’s been a neighborhood go-to since opening in 1947, despite changing hands a few times." - Clair Lorell

You get exactly what you expect from a place like this. The three of us went there for lunch and had red beans and rice, fried green tomatoes and chicken and sausage gumbo, onion rings piled, high sautéed spinach, and iced tea to wash it all down. The staff was super friendly and attentive, even when we changed our minds after placing the order never was it problem to adjust and bring what we were looking for. Our food was prepared promptly. The red beans were some of the creamiest I’ve had in a long time. The gumbo was super flavorful and that was followed up with the fried green tomatoes and onion rings. Well, they were just really great. When it came to getting the bill, there was none of this pretentious “We’ve added 20% tip already”. I’m sick and tired of these forced additions to my bill even before I’ve had a look at my meal or even a cup of coffee. I’m all for paying an honest wage to serving staff and the kitchen. I do want restaurants to be honest with their clients and deliver them experience they desire. Liuzza’s it’s just what you expect and a little bit more. There’s nothing overly fancy here honest people serving honest food and treating their patrons kindly. All at a fair price I have to give five stars. Some might say this isn’t a 5-star place and I can understand that. For me it delivered exactly what I expected and wanted and just a little bit more. We need more places like this.

If you are looking for a traditional Italian/New Orleanian restaurant, then this is it! My friend and I went there to have spaghetti and meatballs 😋. It was very good. The red sauce has a meaty-flavor. A small salad came with the main dish. We were there for lunch on a Wednesday and it wasn't busy. After 12:30 pm.

Google
A NOLA local icon for sure! There may be a line if you go about lunchtime, but it's SOOO worth it! The fried oyster Po-Boy may have been my favorite lunch of the trip! and the fried mushrooms appetizer is to die for! Carve some time out for this legendary stop! %100

I had never visited Liuzza’s Restaurant and Bar before today. Several friends have recommended it, but I just never made it. I am so happy I finally made it and it will be a regular of mine in the future. There is a very casual atmosphere, great service and excellent food. The Eggplant Napoleon is great and more than I could eat.

Ben

Google
I had a cup of gumbo, fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade, and half fried oyster and half fried shrimp po boy. Everything was good! The fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade and the fried shrimp po boy were 4.5/5! Shrimp cooked and seasoned perfectly. The bread was a bit too crumbly and messy. The fried green tomatoes without the sauce might be a bit bland.

Had seen on True South SEC Network, so while here we made decision to stop by. Did a tour earlier, so dropped off and drove there around 230p. Had ice cold schooners! Onion rings delicious, not frozen. Red beans and rice had good flavor too. Decided on a special of 1/2 Sandwich and soup or salad. Opted for fried shrimp and Gumbo. We could have split the sandwich. Gumbo delicious 😋 Shrimp sandwich on French baguette dressed with lettuce and tomatoes. Pickles on the side. Glad we made the stop and didn't go off the negative reviews. Morgan is from Southlake area, but NOLA is home. Had great conversation at the bar. Best wishes to her, and her son that is on his way to the NFL in the future!! We will return!

Google
I love comin here when I come to New Orleans to visit family. The food is sooooo good and it’s a fun atmosphere with excellent service. I got the roast beef with brown gravy sandwich, a couple family members got the muffelatta, and we had great onion rings for appetizer. Plus the cold beer is great washin it all down. You have to try Liuzza’s if you haven’t been before.

Google
I’m from Miami and NY and recently decided to visit New Orleans. I’ve heard great things about Liuzza’s Restaurant & Bar and decided to try the pizza and onion rings, paired with a frozen beer, and I was completely blown away – I was in heaven! 😇 The flavors and the taste… I have no words. It felt like I was home. The experience was fantastic, and the staff were amazing. I loved the food so much that I asked to speak to the chef to personally share my compliments. Hands down, this is one of the best places I’ve ever eaten at in New Orleans. If I could give this place a 10-Star rating, I would! I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK and highly recommend others to CHECK THIS PLACE OUT. You won’t be disappointed! 🌟

Yelp
I had heard about Liuzza's from several locals plus seen it on #TrueSouth so I had to give it a try and I am glad I did. First of all the ambience is unbelievable, I sat out on the patio with a cool breeze blowing and amazing music playing in the background. The service was impeccable and to top it off, the food was better than advertised!!! it was hard to make up my mind, but I decided on the legendary Frenchuletta with the housemade all olive salad and you talk about scrumptious! OMG! If you find yourself wandering around mid city, and you hear your stomach, grumbling, make a trip down Bienville St and you will thank me later! I definitely will be back!

Yelp
I have no idea what happened to this place. It was once a favorite of mine when I lived in town. I recently visited and the beloved Frenchuleta sandwich was awful. Tough meat, low rent bread, very little olive salad, none of that warm goodness. I don't mean to be rude but I'd rather eat at a gas station sub shop. I also bought a jar of red gravy to take home and it was tasteless. Of course the place was the same fun bar feel it's been since the war years, but I don't know what to do about the food.

J S.

Yelp
Mediocre Not sure why everyone claims they have the best Italian food around It was meh Chicken park was burnt- Pasta cold Not a favorite

Dawn V.

Yelp
5 stars based solely on the Seafood Napoleon and the Red Beans/rice- I'd come back for these two dishes every single time Also, table service inside dining area is stellar! Bar is best for beers only- loved that we could get an N/A beer in a frozen goblet because it really elevates the experience Cocktails aren't their thing but just go with the flow- to be fair, they're very upfront that you should order a beer This place should be tried by everyone looking for the Nola feels

Mary S.

Yelp
Liuzza's was the first restaurant we tried in Mid City. Our nephews ordered the Gumbo, my husband got the pizza, and I got the eggplant casserole with garlic bread. We all felt that the gumbo was the best choice for the price. You got a big bowl for about $15 and they said it was the best gumbo they had in New Orleans.

Mac G.

Yelp
YUM! I mean, sure, it's NOLA, you expect to be wowed by every piece of food that you eat. But this place has the right vibe too. Super homey and neighborhood friendly. Couldn't get into Katy's one night with friends, and stumbled in by accident. Had red beans and rice, sea food Napoleon, shrimp po boy. You cannot go wrong. Enjoy!!!

Tony H.

Yelp
I love New Orleans. Especially when you have a local as a guide. You get to go to places off the beaten path. This is a locals restaurant that has great food and service. The restaurant is typical of New Orleans style local restaurants and has an air of neighborhood friendliness to it. My wife had the fried green tomato BLT and I had the oyster Po'boy and a cup of gumbo. Perfect portions and great meal means we will be coming back again.

Kim S.

Yelp
This was our very first stop when visiting NOLA and it was a great first impression. I have NEVER had better rice and beans in my life. I love that dish but this was different. The love and care they put into making rice and beans at Liuzza's makes a difference. Our server was hysterical and fun. She made our evening a blast. We will definitely be back to Liuzza's when we are in New Orleans again!

Amanda P.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in during a rainy downpour. Just a few customers so our service was quick. I ordered the eggplant Napoleon and my husband ordered the fried catfish and oysters with red beans. The meals are huge enough to share. My meal was good and fresh eggplant crispy. My husband enjoyed the fried oysters and shrimp not the catfish as much. He said the red beans and rice were good as well. Cute little shop.

Jerry S.

Yelp
Just dropped in for a quick lunch. Not too busy today. Place looks and feels like the old Liuzza's. I ordered a hot sausage poboy dressed. We also ordered an onion ring appetizer. The onion rings were delicious and the hot sausage poboy was delicious. The sausage was link style. It was taken out of the skins. It was delicious. I'll be back for more wonderful meals.

Charles E.

Yelp
An all time favorite. The seafood platter is a ton of good food-my wife and I split it. French fries are for real. Need I even say anything about the Beer? This place is serious. Go get you some.

Julie J.

Yelp
Every bit of food was scrumptious. And the service was even better. Morgan was the best and we had such fun with her. The ambience was quaint and perfectly New Orleans.

Via T.

Yelp
I came here the day before Christmas. It was raining hard outside and the holidays so there were no customers. I was greeted and seated quickly. The workers were very nice and went above and beyond. The food was delicious too! Highly recommend.

Alyssa A.

Yelp
Fabulous food & service. Very friendly place to have a cocktail & grab a bite. The frenchaletta was amazing! So fresh!

Gonzalo M.

Yelp
Wow ! what a secret find. I strongly recommend if you are looking for great food and excellent service.

Joel W.

Yelp
Food was great!!! I had the chicken parm, the chicken breast was huge and the red sauce had so much flavor. Chelsea was our server and just the sweetest person you can meet. I do recommend the French fries as a table starter. Fresh potatoes and thick cut. Had to order a take home because they were so good. Definitely a place I will go to again when visiting New Orleans.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to dine at Liuzzas, a bar/restaurant known for its Italian cuisine, and I was really impressed. The eggplant and Chicken Napoleon were both delicious, but the real standout was the chicken Parmesan with its amazing sauce. The sauce had a unique flavor that really made the dish stand out, and it was definitely the highlight of the meal. In addition to the food, I also have to give a shout-out to the frozen beer mugs at Liuzzas. They are a great way to beat the heat on a hot day, and the mugs are huge. One of the things that sets Liuzzas apart is its unique atmosphere. The place has its own resounding vibes - it's a bit hard to describe, but there's just something special about the place. It's a great spot to grab a drink and some food, and the service is friendly. Overall, I would highly recommend Liuzzas for its delicious Italian cuisine and unique atmosphere. The chicken parmesan and frozen beer cups are definitely worth a try

Hannah D.

Yelp
I love Morgan!!! She was so kind and patient with our crew this past week....Look forward to coming back. Thanks, Lady Oysters were perfect.

Carol R.

Yelp
$20 for a roast beef poboy. Taste was good but price was higher than on the menu! Cheese couldn't cost $3. Place loud and that was when it was half empty. Only one waitress so service was slow.

Keely B.

Yelp
This place is a classic, but has been pleasantly updated. We enjoyed the red beans and rice with smoked and spicy sausage and it was just what we wanted for our last lunch in New Orleans. My daughter had a large plate of pasta with red gravy, which was solid. There is something for everyone to love in your party. This is a family place. They also feature cold beer in frosty goblets. Yum.

William B.

Yelp
We enjoyed our meal, ate inside, good appetizers, great gumbo, ok service and friendly atmosphere

Zoe D.

Yelp
This spot gets a 5/5 every time! Our server was Morgan and she was excellent. We were the first guest for today and she welcomed us with open arms. I've frequently visit but I realized I've never left a review. I've been coming here since I was a young girl with friends. The spot has not changed a bit. Really comfy and cozy. We ordered the Onion rings & Fried Pickles (my fav) for apps. They were fried to perfection. For entrees we ordered the Italian salad, red beans with smoked sausage, and fried Chix with greens and a side of fried shrimp! Hal in the kitchen made sure that EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT! Can't wait to come back.

Lauren R.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Great happy hour as well. Morgan was a great bartender. We'll be back soon!

Leslie S.

Yelp
First time eating inside Liuzza's since the pandemic and it was overdue. Instead of getting my usual spaghetti and meatballs I switched it up and ordered the eggplant Parmesan. Probably the best eggplant Parmesan I've had that wasn't homemade. The crust on the eggplant was nice and crunchy and each piece had melted cheese topped with red gravy. It came with their delicious pasta with red gravy. I added a generous sprinkling of Parmesan and dove in thinking that this may be my new go to instead of the spaghetti and meatballs. The restaurant and kitchen are currently understaffed and had only one person in the kitchen, one manning the bar, and one waitress. It didn't affect us since we were there early, but as the tables filled up the wait time for tables was growing. The waitress informed people as they were seated but some tables were getting antsy waiting for their food. Some people just aren't as understanding I guess!

Jen B.

Yelp
Another Classic New Orleans family restaurant. I've eaten here dozens of times since the 1980s and little has changed. That is called consistency. There are some fine menu choices including Gumbo, Fried Green Tomatoes topped with shrimp remoulade, and the French-uletta, a muffuletta on French, get it?? The Big Frozen schooner of beer goes with everything on the menu perfectly. I love that they have added outdoor seating options during these Covid-y times, plus we had some visitors with a dog and we were all very happy at a picnic table under an umbrella. An unpretentious, classic Mid City treasure.

Amy G.

Yelp
Always excellent. Always spot on. Would always recommend you try the eggplant casserole. Loaded with fresh eggplants and Italian sausage. So amazing!!

Diane H.

Yelp
Go see Morgan for the best bloody Mary's in town. Just got off a cruise ship take the trolley walk three blocks to the hidden gem it's a must see..

Mort G.

Yelp
As a second-timer in NOLA, I decided to stay in Mid-City and happen to be across the street from Liuzza's. The appearance alone made me want to eat there and I was not wrong. My party and I were greeted by Morgan, one of the most interesting people I've met here. We sat in the main dining room and listened to the '30's and '40's music playing in the background. Morgan was not only our greeter, but the bartender, waitress, and busboy all-in-one! She started us off with fried mushrooms and the "Frenchuletta", which were both superb. I was in the mood for pasta, and the menu offered many choices. I decided to have the veal parm, while the rest of my party tried other dishes, such as Red Beans & Rice with Hot Sausage, fried chicken, meatball sandwich with mozzarella, and chicken parm. All dishes were exceptional! The red gravy has a very mellow flavor, not too sweet, just delicious. The meats were tender and tasty, and Morgan makes a wicked margarita that made my night! I highly recommend Liuzza's if you visit Mid-City NOLA! Next time I go back, I want to try the Eggplant St John and the Fried Green Tomato Poboy.

Michaela T.

Yelp
First time here. Came in for a drink and spent 6 hours here instead. Morgan is the absolute BEST! Food was great; drinks and service was even better. 10/10 experience

Andi F.

Yelp
What a great spot! Their new chef Mallory is friendly and amazing. Their food is amazing. Great job! The white chocolate raspberry bread pudding was freaking amazing. Their fries and onion rings were so very good! Street parking only. Their frosty mugs for beverages were ingenious. I recommend this for everyone.

Taylor J.

Yelp
They never answer the phone. Just called 38 times. Guess I'll go somewhere else. It's a shame

Stephen G.

Yelp
Talked to the owner about quality and control. Onion rings way overcooked & burnt, shrimp and oysters way overcooked! Use to be high quality, now, inedible!

Grace H.

Yelp
Where do I even start?! I came to New Orleans on vacation with a few friends. We decided to try out Liuzza's, and they were pretty busy. Morgan had the whole restaurant to take care of, bar top, tables, dish washing, doing it all herself. She was such a wonderful presence and truly had the best energy! She took AMAZING care of us, and really raised the vibe of the restaurant! On top of 5-star service, the food was 5 stars as well!!! We got a meatball poboy, the rice and beans, and the Italian salad! Everything came out perfect, and I can't wait to make it back to New Orleans and eat here again! This is a new staple for future vacations here!!

Grob B.

Yelp
The place looks good, but the employees killed the mood. The food was okay, but, again, the loud mouthed, rude & unprofessional employees ruined the atmosphere and experience. We will NEVER return to this place.

Tammy Adams M.

Yelp
Dining area had 8-10 tables and looked to be nice cozy place Poor service when your the only table in the restaurant is totally unacceptable. Food waited under warming lights too long and arrived cold. Had to send back. Food arrived and one meal was refrigerated cold. Had to send it back. The warm desert ordered was cold in center. We gave up. Food that we could eat was not great.

Jim G.

Yelp
If you want a restaurant with old style Nola- Italian grub and a throwback atmosphere Liuzza's is one of a dying breed that you can still go to (a couple of the others are also in Mid-City). Menu is the same as it's been (think red gravies, gumbo, po-boys, fried seafood and sides). Maybe fried seafood is not as good as it once was but the other Nola and Italian dishes are and, of course, you can get it with a massive frozen mug of beer. Give this Nola institution a try so it can stick around for many more years.

Ella A.

Yelp
We visited Liuzza's in mid-city on a whim on a very busy Saturday night. It was a beautiful night so we sat outside at one of the tables and ordered a couple of the spaghetti and "meatball", an open faced roast beef with mashed potatoes, and a side of sautéed spinach. The meatball is the biggest meatball I've ever seen in my life and the roast beef was tender and delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food, and we took home plenty to eat for the next few days - the portions are huge. They were crazy busy, however we still received FAST and very friendly service. I'll definitely be back!

Linda E.

Yelp
Ordered the eggplant St. John and was very disappointed. The shrimp were under cooked, the sauce bland, and the pasta tough. not worth $20. my friend had a Poboy for $17.50 ( little pricey for a Poboy) and it was tasteless. I can say the beer was nice and cold in a frozen mug. Don't think I'll be going back.

Mack B.

Yelp
Eggplant Napoleon is a must! Morgan is fantastic either behind the bar, or serving tables. Usually does both. No need for a coat and tie here, just come on in and enjoy the reasonably priced food, and be treated like you have been friends for years.

Marianna S.

Yelp
Delicious food and better service. Morgan is a hoot! The French muffallatta is the best

William E.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Met the new owner. Great guy. Awesome Bartender Morgan!! Coldest beer around

Alexandra E.

Yelp
Onion rings were not fresh. Gumbo was really good. Person bringing out food was rude and had attitude. Not sure why she was like that. Will not be coming back.

Kelly J.

Yelp
A hidden gem that you won't regret visiting, in fact.... not visiting means you missed out! Full bar, excellent food, laid back atmosphere, good people who are friendly to all. If you can, go during the week before 4:30, and sit at the bar with Morgan. Her personality is infectious and you'll feel like family from the start!

Dianna S.

Yelp
We were looking for a casual, quick place to visit for lunch - we found it at Luizza's. This was a convenient choice as it was near my sister's apartment, to whom we were visiting for the week. She hadn't eaten there yet, so it was a win for everyone! The menu was of pretty standard fare. Some Italian stuff, some NOLA classics, some fried things. Everything looked like it would satisfy. Since we were headed out to sightsee and museum-stroll, we didn't want to go too heavy. Here is what we chose: Red Beans and Rice - a nice one! Thick and hearty and very satisfying. The cup portion was a good size for me. French Fries - hand cut and delicious! So were my hubby's onion rings - you could tell they were homemade. Fried Oyster Poor Boy - good; bread was nice. Only downfall was the one tomato on this big sandwich. Oh and shredded lettuce might've played nicer than the leaf. But the oysters had a great flavor and crunch. Seafood Gumbo - decent but nothing out of this world; a respectable version. Service was quick, which was great. The bartender made me a Tom Collins even though it wasn't on the menu. He looked up the ingredients, which I thought was very nice. Anyone looking for some good Italian/NOLA diner fare, this is a good option.

Corey J.

Yelp
First and foremost Morgan is by far the most personable bartender Ive ever met. Extremely welcoming. Make sure you stop in before 430 so you can sit at the bar with her. We came to New Orleans from Detroit to experience Bourbon Street and Liuzza's ended up being our surprise experience. Amazing food! Outstanding people! If you dont stop in you're missing out.

Chenay M.

Yelp
You want true southern comfort? Well this is your place! Morgan, our bartender, made us feel like family as soon as we walked in! We came back four times because we loved her so much! The food, drinks, atmosphere and service was truly a special experience. Check them out!

Samantha B.

Yelp
Tried this place out last weekend on a whim. Our bartender was a lady named Morgan and our service was exceptional! She was very fun and honestly entertaining which made our experience even better! The food and drinks were yummy and fresh. Definitely going back!

Janesia J.

Yelp
Morgan at Liuzzas hands down best margarita I've had in the city. She's good company and whips up good drinks. We will definitely be back for food !

Rodney G.

Yelp
Liuzzas has been here since 1946. I grew up in New Orleans and in the early 70's frequented this establishment for the onion rings and ice cold beer after baseball games. After moving away and over the decades of returning to the city I try to revisit some of the old landmark restaurants. Liuzzas has all you can ask for. Poboys and Italian fare that hits the spot.
