12 Trattorias to Try in Italy, From North to South

"A hugely popular seaside hangout near the Amalfi Coast where vegetables come straight from a nearby dream garden; the cooking is effortlessly elegant, with highlights like stuffed escarole, local prawns, and a perfectly sauced pasta mista made with just-picked tomatoes." - Marco Bolasco

Lo Stuzzichino

"Situated in the centre of Sant'Agata, this welcoming, informal restaurant boasts traditional ceramics and an open-view kitchen. When ordering your meal, make sure you ask the charismatic owner, who is a real connoisseur of Campanian cuisine, for his recommendations. The regional dishes are full of memorable flavours, with a focus on vegetables, many of which are grown in the restaurant’s own kitchen garden nearby. This is somewhere you’d happily come to eat every day!" - Michelin Inspector

My absolute favorite dining experience during my trip to Italy was at Lo Stuzzichino! From the moment you walk in, you can feel the warmth and love of this family-owned and operated restaurant. The atmosphere is lively, upbeat, and so welcoming. We celebrated my mother’s 70th birthday here, and the staff made her the absolute star of the night. Mimmo, the owner and chef, personally came over to greet us, checked in several times, and at the end of our meal brought out a birthday cake while leading the entire restaurant in singing “Happy Birthday.” He even gave every diner a complimentary lemon drop shot to join in on the celebration! It was such a beautiful, unforgettable moment. The food was equally amazing. We each started with a glass of white wine, fresh caprese, grilled octopus, and the most incredible spaghetti and meatballs. I tried this dish at several restaurants during my trip, and without question, this was the best. Everything was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Lo Stuzzichino is the kind of place that makes you feel like family, and I cannot wait to return. Truly a must-visit in Santa Agata.

That was my very first experience at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and I have to say, I've never tasted food this extraordinary in my life! The highlight was hearing the owner share the heartwarming story of how the restaurant began back in 1989 with his parents, and now he has taken over. He was incredibly welcoming, and the food was both sophisticated and bursting with flavor, letting you savor every single ingredient. The service was outstanding, and the three staff members were so much fun, making us feel right at home. The music added to the delightful atmosphere, and we will absolutely recommend this place to everyone so they can enjoy it as much as we did!

I’d like to share with you a little gem near Sorrento called Sant’Agata, home to the amazing restaurant Lo Stuzzichino. If you’re looking for outstanding food, this is the place to go. We made a reservation through our hotel, and Alessandro kindly drove us there and back – such a warm and wonderful person. We ordered ravioli, pasta, grilled beef, tiramisu, and cheesecake. Every course was fantastic – the flavors were simply unbelievable. At the end of the meal, we had the pleasure of meeting the heart of the restaurant: Mimo, the great chef. He is such a kind person, always striving to give his guests the very best. The atmosphere was delightful, and the whole team – from the waiters to the chef – made the experience truly special. I am absolutely certain I’ll be returning to this restaurant. Gratzie mille to Mimo, Alessandro, and the entire team for an unforgettable experience and incredible food. 🫶🏽

What a spectacular evening! We came to this restaurant based on a recommendation from a prominent chef in NYC and it did not disappoint! We let the chef order for us and it was tremendous! The restaurant is lovely-cozy and warm, the staff so welcoming and the food is next level. If there is a restaurant in heaven, Chef De Gregorio should be the chef!

Had high hopes for this restaurant as the reviews were really positive. Made a reservation for 8:15pm and stood at the entrance for a long timescale despite booking. Plenty of colleagues running around but nobody acknowledged us - eventually acknowledged and the table needed setting which is normal, left standing up and no one was setting the table so continued to wait - eventually I sat down at the table and waited for it to be set. Food was lovely and the drinks were nice - cheesecake was delicious. Just a shame about the poor service experience at the start.

The food was delicious! Just the bill was weird in the end. Different prices for the same 0.5L house wine. And a sea bream that was the catch of the day. 8€ per pound, but cavities calculated like 8€/100gr. The sea bream filet dish in the menu was 22€ and the whole fish (just a normal size - I allow me to judge, since I'm eating this at home every serving week) for two was 65€ in the end.

I usually don’t bother leaving reviews, but this place deserves it. Chef himself came to the table multiple times. The food was absolutely brilliant. I ended up over eating because it was that good. Recipient of the 2021 Michelin star. You would have no idea because the staff is so personable and unpretentious would definitely come again.

The atmosphere was warm and full of southern Italian charm — think soft lighting, Mediterranean colors, and a relaxed vibe. The food? Absolutely exceptional. The ravioli was perfectly cooked, with a delicate filling that melted in the mouth. The seafood dishes were fresh and full of flavor — you could almost taste the sea breeze in every bite. The tiramisu was creamy, light, and just sweet enough — a classic done right. But the real standout was the lemon dessert. It was bright, tangy, and truly unforgettable — a perfect nod to Amalfi’s famous lemons. I would come back for that alone!🍋🍋🍋

Yelp
This place is just outta body experience. It might not get a Michelin star cuz there is not fuzz or buzz but the food is prepared with love with the most freshest ingredients and all wholesome open kitchen process. I tried the baby prawns (gamberetti), the minestrone out of the stratosphere, the clam and mussels appetizers as fresh as it can get, the clam and mussel pasta was homely and fresh... The founding grandparents still are supervising the kitchen, the son, Mimmo, runs the tables with other servers, and you can see the whole show in a open kitchen. Im writing this without having finished dinner but don't need to taste or see more cuz I know it will be

Yelp
We arrived last night in Sant Agata and walked to this restaurant from our Villa which was very convenient. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. Shortly after we sat down, we met Mimo (Dominic) our waiter (family owners). Mimo was very enthusiastic and quite proud of the family cooking. He helped us with our wine and food selections. Wine was great, food was even better. We had 8 in our group and food arrived just as soon as we finished our appetizers. Service and outdoor seating were excellent. Dessert was also very good. We will definitely be back during our stay and we highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
We had a large group- 8 adults and 3 children- and we walked in off the street and they were able to accommodate us which was awesome. The food was delicious. I tried lamb chops for the first time and they were good. I would definitely order them again. I also had grilled vegetables on the side which included fennel. Something different, but also delicious. Someone in our group ordered lemon sorbet for dessert and it arrived inside a hollowed out lemon which was a nice touch. The service was great. The prices were average. The food was good.

Yelp
Saw this restaurant on Giada in Italy and had to give it a try. I took my wife and 3 teenagers and we all loved the food. I will say that it was a wonderful dining experience. Beautiful location, very friendly staff and owner and some of the best Italian food we've ever had in Italy and NYC. I had the tagliatelle bolognese and it was perfect. Freshly made tagliatelle pasta and bountiful helping of bolognese was delicious. My second course was the piccata veal and it was so tender and tasty. The owner has such a vibrant and personal touch with his customers. It was well worth the 25 minute taxi ride to get here. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Really enjoyed both the ambience and the food. The night we went, the place was hopping so a reservation might be required. Nonetheless, the host of the place we stayed was friends with the owner and even though crowded he setup a table for us. The food was truly delicious with the lamb chops and the aubergine (egg plant) stuffed with cheese and tomatoes, particularly good. The rum babba for desert just rounded off a perfect meal. The owner was very friendly and even arranged for one of his staff to drive us back to the place we were staying! Doesn't get better than that.

Yelp
We dined here with a large group twice this week and had a great experience. The staff made us feel like we were part of the family. They have a great selection of local fresh food and wine. Try the fried zucchini appetizer. I liked the simple spaghetti with tomatoes primi and veal secondo. The tiramisu is one of the best I've had. Sunday evening had awesome live entertainment. Not many restaurants where the diners get up spontaneously for a line dance after dinner!

Yelp
My wife and I are on our first time in Sorrento and stumbled upon this lovely restaurant. We drove for 4 hours from Rome and checked in at our hotel. The place was empty at 6pm and we were hesitant. We asked for a menu and liked what we read. Not to mention., I saw the Michelin rated in the window. As we sat down. We love the ambience on this restaurant. People were so nice and polite. 30 minutes later people were flocking the restaurant. I would highly recommend this to my friends and family. So come and enjoy their food and service.

Yelp
We wanted to try a local family run restaurant to enjoy a taste of true Italian cooking that we are accustomed to. This was perfect. We enjoyed every bite and the live music was a lot of fun. The staff and the man who seemed to be the owner were very gracious and thankful we came. It's a 25 minute drive from Sorrento in a small village, but worth the trip for an authentic meal.

Yelp
The best little gen of Italian dinning. And best yet, many gluten free options, including bread, pasta and dessert. Newly renovated interior and menu, all created by a family that works together. I recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Sorrento.

Yelp
This was one of our favorite restaurants during our 2 week trip to Italy. We enjoyed it so much that we went back during our last night in Sorrento. This family run osteria, serves fresh created pastas in delightful sauces. One stand out was the ravioli with a light lemon sauce which was wonderful and the veal was wonderfully prepared. While this restaurant was busy on each time we visited, we were always promptly seated and the staff took excellent care of us.

Yelp
Everything we ate was delicious. The baked eggplant was fantastic. For dessert, we had to get two: the ricotta pear cake and their famous lemon cake. Yum!

Randi Q.

Yelp
amazing restaurant, start to finish. Fresh local & "slow" food with engaged & profession service. A family run gem in Sant Agata. The fresh pasta was great. All the fish was fantastic & delicately delish. . Evan the tomatoes & grilled artichokes were memorable. The deserts are we what dreams are made of.

Yelp
We went to Lo Stuzzichino last night on a recommendation and had the most amazing time. The food was incredible - had the gnocchi, eggplant, lemon veal and everything was perfectly done. What was even more impressive was the service and ambiance. The owner was very gracious and showed us the wine cellar which was spectacular! It was such a warm and inviting experience, we all loved it! We had a party of 12 and they took exceptional care of us. Grazie mille!

Yelp
we were staying right around the corner at don alfonso 1890, so we came here for dinner. this place is family-run and fabulous. to start, we had the veggie antipasti, which came w/ artichoke, eggplant, red pepper, potato, and zucchini. hubby got the pasta w/ garlic and chili peppers to start, and i got the grilled dorade. he also got a pizza margherita but only ate half, and we took the other half back for our meal the next day. we also got a half carafe of wine, and the total came to about 45 euros. it's cute to sit by the kitchen and see the grandma and grandpa cooking up a storm!

Michele D.

Yelp
This is a friendly family-run place with great ambience and great food. We ate here two nights and had the ravioli wth lemon sauce special, various pastas, pizza, chicken and desserts. The pasta was all home- made and delicious, and our kids raved about the desserts. Every dish was a winner. The bill was extremely reasonable and the service was always with a smile. Great place!
