The feeling of getting my hands on locally grown, high quality fruits and vegetables brings me a special kind of joy I had not really accessed prior to my thirties. I guess this is growing up. When Local Roots came onto the scene posting colorful images of their farm fresh harvests and how they're bringing it all to Brooklyn, I made it a point to visit soon after they opened. Couple that with the fact that it's women-owned, Asian-owned, and how clearly passionate the owner and team are about building a community-driven, regenerative food system in New York City, I really felt that Local Roots was my kind of place.
When I saw that they were hosting a salsa dance class in their space, I thought it would be a fun opportunity to refine my salsa dancing and check out the store. I loved the simple way they decorated it, with neon light accents that include a neon light of bok choy. While they make great use of the space, it is very tiny, and therefore they didn't have a ton of provisions and produce. It seemed that everything was well curated though, with lots of Asian and women-owned brands on their shelves, and even a kitchen in the back where they make a lot of their market menu that includes scallion pancakes and fan tuan, a Taiwanese rice roll. I went in really hoping to come away with a bounty of things but didn't see anything I actually wanted. I'm hopeful I will during a future visit though!
The dance class was well attended and though there really wasn't a lot of room to move around, everyone who went was really accommodating around each other, which I found to be an encouraging sign of the community they're building here. Can't wait for the warmer months when they can make use of their adorable backyard.
