This place is still incredible. I've actually counted the number of times I've eaten here with my partner over the years.
Before 2018: 2 times with girlfriends for desserts and cocktails
2018: 2 times (the beginning of something great)
2019: 8 times
2020: 9 times (2 pre-COVID + 7 carry-out)
2021: 1 time (within the first week of the year!)
THE PIZZAS: Absolutely incredible, and we've had all but one of the seasonals (the winter bianca). Our favorites among the year-round regulars are the carbonara and the margherita. We also love the seasonal market tomatoes & goat cheese (summer) and sausage, mushroom, & fontina (winter). The taste is always spot on, but I've noticed they can be a little inconsistent with other aspects. The pizza dough was pretty tough for the first few months of reopening after they closed down during the pandemic, although it hasn't been an issue since this fall. More recently, I've noticed some of their pizzas are either a little too oily or overcooked.
THE PASTAS: So good I've tried to make some of them myself (and failed miserably). My absolute favorite is the orecchiette with sausage and rapini. There's just something so nice and complex about the sauce- creamy and savory but slightly bitter (maybe from the rapini?). I always take some bread to finish off any leftover sauce, and at the end of the meal, proudly display my bowl that looks like it's just come out of the dishwasher. I'm also a huge fan of the tagliatelle with truffled mushrooms - don't be fooled by the description; it actually tastes quite different from the orecchiette but is (almost) equally good! Their butternut squash ravioli special is also fantastic and one of my partner's favorite dishes. However, at $24 for 9 ravioli squares, it's a little pricey, not very filling, and something we've only gotten on special occasions. I've also had their lamb or pork ragu, and even as someone who prefers red sauce over cream, this dish is just meh.
OTHER ENTREES: We've only had one entree here, and it was a dry-aged NY strip steak special on Valentine's Day in 2020. Literally the worst steak either of us have had in our lives - we could barely use a knife to cut through the steak, and it was practically inedible. We were pretty upset to have paid $50 for a brick and said we'd never order a steak here again.
THE DESSERTS: Bocca nera is at the top with its subtle combo of sweetness and bitterness. Another favorite of ours is the olive oil and rosemary cake, paired with vanilla ice cream. A staff member has mentioned that their ice cream is brought in from another creamery in Wisconsin. And lastly, the budino is also pretty good but very much so on the sweet side (a little too much for me).
THE COCKTAILS: I honestly can't remember which cocktails I've ordered, only that the ones I've had so far tasted fantastic!
All in all, Lombardino's is our favorite restaurant of all time, with amazing food and drinks (minus the steak). :)
