Lorenzo & Sons Pizza Review - South Street - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"The perfect New York Slice should be cheap, large, and cheesy with just the right amount of grease droplets. That’s exactly the kind of pizza they have at Lorenzo’s. This South Street deli makes huge, 20-inch pies with slices that fold in half like there’s a perforated line down the middle and taste good even when they’re just reheated from the window case. They’re also open until 4am on the weekends, which makes it the perfect place to end a night out." - Sydney McElwee

Famous Restaurants in Philly That Are Actually Good - Eater Philly

"For decades, South Street has drawn visitors for its unconventional shops and bar scene. After a long night, Lorenzo’s is the spot for $4 jumbo pizza slices — so large they’re served on two paper plates — until 3 a.m. Step it up from there by building a “Philly Taco”: wrap a Lorenzo’s slice around a cheesesteak from Jim’s (located across the street and conveniently also open until 3 a.m.)." - Sarah Maiellano

Google
Who visits Philadelphia in search of New York-style pizza? My pizza-loving little boys do—and this spot did not disappoint. The food was fresh, fast, and perfect for families. We were warmly welcomed with a big smile as soon as we walked in. The staff thoughtfully offered to cut the oversized slices in half, making them easier for my kids to handle. The pizza was absolutely delicious. I even went back for seconds—braving a thunderstorm and sacrificing my leather jacket just to keep the pizza dry on the way home. And honestly, I’d do it all over again.

Some friends and I were walking around the 9th Street Italian Market Festival 2025 and got hungry. One wanted pizza and three wanted meatball hoagies. On the corner we saw a place that could give each of us what we wanted. Pizza was ordered; buffalo chicken was the special for the day. Three meatball hoagies were ordered by the rest of us. The pizza was so good, I didn't even get a chance to get a picture of it. New York style. The three hoagies were wonderful. We all got provolone on our meatballs. Overall, the group was thrilled by our decision to eat there and plan to return to the area for this spot and the area in general since 3 of 4 of us are Italian by our roots.

Google
I'm a New Yorker. The slice was truly a LARGE New York slice. Crust was perfect, just the right amount of sauce and cheese evenly distributed. I'm giving this place 4 stars for 3 reason. 1) THEY ONLY TAKE CASH! (It's 2025, why not digital payment- very odd). 2) Toppings on pizza are ONLY Cheese for slices. You can get whatever toppings you want on pies (which starts at $45), but not on slices. 3) they charge you $6.50 for 1 slice but if a customer wants a box, it's an additional $0.50. Otherwise, customers are forced to carry the large slice on 2 paper plates. Why not give customer paper bags? Would return overall.

syntax error

Google
One slice is about the size of a small pizza for $6 with a box ($0.50). Prices go up about $0.50 every two years or so per slice. There are no toppings on slice orders. Atmosphere is a bit of a "soup nazi" type of ordering. Taste differs from day to day depending on the cook. Secret is in the sauce, and in this case, it's sugar. Dough is saturated with GLUTEN, so be prepared for a swollen constipated gut.

Google
best slice in the city. best late night grub, too. this place has been here for years, and is a mainstay of Philadelphia late night food. this latest visit they had a security guard at the door! considering the number of fights I've seen outside, that's probably a good idea. they've also removed all the interior space leaving enough room for about 5 people to squeeze in and make their order at a time.

Google
This review is for the Italian market, christian st. location. NOT the "Lorenzo and sons" seems Google has the name wrong. Great pizza. My new favorite in SP. The hoagie are fantastic also. Try the seeded roll! Hands down one of the best in south philly.

Google
They had 20 pizzas already cooked. I like my slice burnt on the edges. They would not sell me this lice, because there was another 1 with 2 slices left.I don't know if this is appropriate. Everything was there ready. I left hungry.

Google
You really can’t go wrong with a $6 slice of pizza the size of your head at 2am. While I was definitely slightly inebriated trying this for the first time, it was a solid slice. Sauce was great! Also, the line looked long but moved quickly.

Yelp
What can I say? This pizza was delicious! I never had the old one before the fire, but I imagine it was just as tasty. There was only one guy working but he got us our slices quickly, and I liked the condiment station inside. The hot sauce is worth adding! I really like the rich history of this place, and being inside it was very amusing. I like the environment here and it's good for a quick pick me up, or a light dinner. Highly recommend

Yelp
I hen in Philly and craving pizza, you need to stop at Lorenzo And Son's! The sauce is on the sweeter side and it's one of the biggest slices you will get anywhere. If you want a challenge: grab a slice and go up the street to Jim's and get a cheesesteak and wrap the slice around it...you now have the infamous Philly Taco!
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
Skip de angelos. Come here instead. (I've never been to de Angelo's but this is next door and the lines are crazy!). It's right next door to de angelos so you've likely seen it. The Philly cheesesteak is 10/10. Seriously. Deeelicious. No line either. Philly cheesesteak with cooper sharp (cheese) and seeded roll (it's a little extra). 100% yum.

Yelp
Great pizza! The place is small, nothing fancy, friendly service... serves cheese pizza as a pie or by the slice. The slices are massive, taste great, and have a crispy thin crust. Not much more I can say except go get a slice!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
This is a long-standing pizza spot on South Street. Take out only. Huge, tasty cheese slices. A go-to for late night pizza in the area because it's open until 3 am. and cooked fast to order. Cool area to walk and see shops and the South Street Philly staple. I subtracted 2 stars due to the menu being limited to only cheese slices or a 28-inch, $42 pie. $8 for 1 topping on a pie. Efficient service. Stop here for a late night slice or in the daytime for a South Street staple.

Yelp
I went here late one evening based upon yelp reviews. The place take out only and I believe only sells slices or whole pies. I got one slice of cheese pizza on a plate. I saw afterwards that a box was $.50 extra. To save the slice of massive was an understatement Many times I have seen large slices, but they are typically a double with slice of a normal diameter of pizza I'm not sure the diameter of the pizza of the slice came out of the slice. Must've been 18 to 20 inches long. Unfortunately, due to the size of the slice it was very difficult to eat. That being said he sauce was tasty. The cheese was the perfect amount in the dough soft with a slight crisp. Had to spend a normal size slice I think it just would have been better.
google avatar

Yelp
Slice price has essentially doubled since my last review. There is definitely better pizza in Philly but I still get nostalgia eating a huge slice here. I remember I used to be able to finish a slice but not any more. No more parm to add to pizza either. I added a bunch of garlic to mine though. Still cash only and definitely no seating. At one point that had a place for you to at least stand inside, but that is no more. I took a star cause they literally have made this the most bare bones place. It was definitely better 10 years ago.
google avatar

Yelp
For the size of a slice alone!! Decent pizza too. Tasted good, handed to you quick, fresh and hot. Great way to go on South Street. Here's a tourist move - do the Philly taco! Head down to Ishkabibble's, order a cheesesteak and roll it up in a slice of pizza. Don't think about it, just do it!!
google avatar

Yelp
Me and my family ordered a 28" pizza without realizing it was going to insanely huge! Definitely can share with 7-8 people. One huge slice is more than enough for me. The sauce was sweet and the added topping of sausage wasn't too salty, it had plenty of cheese and a soft pizza crust it was delish!
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
Still the best pizza slice I've ever had and continue to crave it when I think about it! I wish there was seating nearby.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Absolutely one of the BEST pizza places in the entire city and I'd say eastern PA. It's greasy, flimsy and so damn good! Nothing better than walking around down south street people watching and ordering a slice at their walk up window. The slices are HUGE. Service had always been fast and decent. A+++!

Yelp
I'll tell you what could improve this place....GO Back TO THE WAY YOU USED TO MAKE THE PIZZAS!!!! This place had the best pizza. Not anymore. Myself and my family have gotten slices here since we were in our 20's... back in 1990. This pizza has always been the best. We decided to give it 1 more chance today but nope, they definitely changed the dough and cheese last year at some point. This is the 3rd time we've been back since we first noticed this last year and we kept thinking " maybe it was just who was making the pizza that day". So we tried again and it still was terrible again. Now today we went for the first time in 6 months thinking maybe they changed it back, but nope. It's sad because I'm pretty sure they lost a lot of their long standing customers. We are definitely never eating here again. The cheese was this and chewy and came apart from the dough... that never happened before they changed it. This is a place we went to all the time. It's a shame. Did they sell it to someone new and they changed the recipe??? What happened?? Anyone else know?

Yelp
surprisingly yesterday was my first time coming to lorenzo's and the pizza itself did not disappoint. top 2 slice i've ever had and i say that as a lifelong jersey resident. yes they're a bit more expensive but it's well known the slices are massive so you absolutely get what you pay for. unfortunately, my fiancée's piece had a hair on it but the man behind the counter immediately apologized and came out with a new 1. the service was fast which i appreciate, though it definitely had to be with the way it's set up inside. there's a kitchen, a counter, and a door with little to no room to wait in so there's almost always a line outside. there is a 100% chance i will be back and i hope after a few hairless slices i can update my review to 5 stars.

Yelp
We truly only went here because our sons name is Lorenzo and we were attending a concert across the street. The slices were huge, yummy and quick! We were served and greeted immediately upon entering. Hot, fresh, pizza, immediately. They take cash only, there's no bathrooms from what I could see and a small standing bar area only. We ate our pizza in a box on the street. Not ideal but yummy. I saw a line out there when we left the concert and saw they're open till 3am! Definitely a post bar spot I'm Sure! Id recommend to anyone visiting the area!

Yelp
I have rather disheartened and ambivalent emotions regarding this establishment. It was once renowned as the premier pizza destination in town; however, regrettably, I can no longer attest to the same level of quality. Firstly, the staff member exhibited a lack of sociability. When I requested a cup, they responded curtly, indicating that only bottled beverages were available. Additionally, the pizza itself was subpar. The cheese was of inferior quality, failing to adhere to the crust and resulting in a rubbery texture that detracted from the overall dining experience. Unfortunately, I must convey my disappointment as I cannot in good conscience provide a positive review of my visit.

Yelp
Theeee best pizza in Philly hands down... and i must admit better than most in NYC... Ur sleepin if you do not hit this place up on ur Philly trip !!! ..... straight up FIRE.....

Yelp
Been coming here for well over 20 years and they never disappoint me! Great pizza, great value for the money eh, and a conversation piece when you pull out a slice! Hahahaha

Yelp
This South Philadelphia staple since 1970 serves one of the 101 best pizzas in America as rated by The Daily Meal. My review is based on a left over pizza that was given to me from their new additional location inside the Philadelphia Live Casino on Packer Avenue. This pizza is lights out, take you to the moon and back, on an orgasmic level. During the pandemic to stay sane I focused on trying all the top level pizza joints in Philadelphia. There are more sought after restaurants that serve pizza that are hard to nail down a reservation and come in at a higher price point (artisan toppings etc.) but I must say if you want a banging pizza how convenient is it to have one right in the Philadelphia Live casino. Also obviously, the original on South Street. If you haven't experienced yet you need to take uber there in the very near future or drive down and hope you get a parking spot. You're welcome! As always people SYOY!!!
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Infamous slice on South Street known for its ridiculous size (equivalent of about 2 and a half regular slices) that used to be a bargain deal at $3 pre-pandemic, but now is a more ordinary $5.50. There's a lot of filters that need to be removed to objectively evaluate this slice. Take away the drunk middle of the night factor, the previous excellent price to slice ratio, and the wow factor from its appearance, one is left with a plain cheese pizza with no option for customization, a marinara sauce that veers into being too sweet, a little too much cheese that makes it messy to eat and contributes to a slightly undercoooked crust, and surly service that demands cash only payment. Couple X factors that give this slice an edge over its competitors: 1) great slice for kids if you're in a time crunch since they probably favor the sweet sauce 2) necessary component if you're attempting to assemble the Philly burrito by folding in a cheesesteak inside the pizza from a pure logistics issue
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
$6 for a slice of cheese but it was a big size slice and was actually pretty good. Lots of cheese pulling
google avatar

Alpa B.

Yelp
The pizza slice was outstanding! Crisp and flavorful! It was perfect sitting in the outdoors and eating the Italian pizza!

Yelp
After eating some terrible slices, I was focused on more high-end pizza around the city lately. But one weekend we decided to find an "old fashioned" slice like I remember eating growing up. It had been so long since I'd been to Lorenzo & Sons I honestly can't remember if I really liked it or if it was just big, inexpensive, and convenient back then. Because the world is more expensive now, slices are now $5. but they are easily twice as big as places that charge $2.50 or $3, so if you want quantity you'll get it. I ate half of my slice and brought the rest home to eat the next day. Slices are completely serviceable. Lots of decent cheese, sauce is fine. There was something sweet about it--not the sauce, but perhaps the crust? I think I've been eating wild fermented and other fancy crusts lately and am not used to sweetness in my pizza. I'm more generous lately with my ratings, but in normal times I might have only given 3 stars. That said, I really enjoyed my slice after not having a fresh cheese slice in the Delaware Valley in years. It was a warm, cheesy slice of nostalgia.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Super tasty pizza. Monster slice as long as my arm for $6. Definitely going back on my next visit to Philly.
google avatar

Pelle F.

Yelp
This is a spot that is known in Philadelphia. If you want a big slice you come here for a fair price and late night vibes. We ordered a 48inch pizza with pepperoni. My only complaint is if you want toppings you have to order a whole pizza. The sauce is top tier and makes the pizza taste like you're in Italy. The cheese is spread to perfection and the crust is not too hard but also not to soft. At night they do have security but the staff is friendly and the service is amazing. I would recommend this to anyone who is visiting south street in Philadelphia.
google avatar

Samira A.

Yelp
Its a big slice of pizza, nothing special. I also was not expecting anything great. I just needed something quick to eat while in the area. I've been here a few times over the years and it always taste the same. The only thing memorable about this place is the size of the slice. It fits on two paper plates. They only serve plain and I think it is cash only.
google avatar

Val S.

Yelp
My friend told me next time I am in town I need to try this pizza. So when I was there over the weekend I stop by got a slice and I was hook on the first bite!!!! It was sooo good I just got a plain cheese pizza and it was the best cheese pizza I've ever ate! 1 slice fits a whole box for only $6!! I writing this review makes me want to fly back and get some more! Will definitely be returning.
google avatar

Shari D.

Yelp
Are you sure this is Philly!? I felt like I was instantly back in downtown Brooklyn on Jay St grabbing a $1 slice. The crust was so crispy and doughy. The cheese was melted just right and the spices were on point. The service was great, no frills, just tell them your order and wait a few minutes. It's definitely a pick up and go, there's no seating area, but there is counter space to jazz your pizza up. Whenever I need a taste of home, I'm heading to Lorenzo & Sons!
google avatar

WAyne Y.

Yelp
Came in from Vegas for a Phillies game and stopped for a slice. The pizza at Lorenzo's is ten times better than anything in Vegas!!
google avatar

Miles A.

Yelp
Good pizza, bit pricey tho. Very large piece about same size as 2 regular large piece probably. Currently $6-7 a slice. Should be back to $5 a slice. Still worth stopping in if you want pizza.

Dan A.

Yelp
Without a doubt the best pizza ever, anywhere!!!!! I live in Illinois, wish I could get it shipped to me.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
It's window service only. Huge Pizza. Tastes like home - NEW YORK PIZZA! Just loved it. But pay for parking because the parking police comes often! If you buy a slice it's huge and if you want a box to carry it in, it's an extra 50 cents. But you can get a brown bag for free. The slice was sooooo good. We only got a light dusting of garlic powder and it was a perfect compliment. Soooo good. I am not sure where I would put a whole pie!! But it was tempting to buy the whole thing! It's $5 for a large slice (about the size of two slices at other places) and it sat with me very well (I didn't get ill from it - as sometimes I am sensitive to low quality products). This was good, and I would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Eric P.

Yelp
Best pizza on South Street! Good sauce too cheese balance. One slice will provide enough nutrition to soak up many libations. Enjoy.
google avatar

Alan J.

Yelp
10/10, I have never had a bad slice here and that's because they make the pizza d perfectly!!!! Whether you just want one mega slice, and I mean mega, see picture for reference or a whole mega pie, Lorenzo has you covered. Simple ingrediants, not many choices and will fill you up. Been here over 50 times!
google avatar

Jeev S.

Yelp
legendary spot on South street. big slice with tangy sauce, just the right amount of cheese and crust that holds up. tastes even better after a show @ the TLA. still on of my all time favorites, I put it up there with all the great NY/NJ/CT slices.
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
Some call it a tourist trap akin to Pats and Genos. Some call it a drunk trap. I call it my favorite slice in the city. It's sweet, it's huge and they're open late. If you like a more fragrant, herbed sauce look elsewhere. If you like a sweet, sweet sauce it's a contender for best slice in the whole North East. Not kidding. You really just need to try it... tell them to leave it in the oven a little longer though, sometimes it can be underdone.
google avatar

Komal R.

Yelp
I sincerely think this place is overhyped. The pizza slice is HUGE but it is just basic cheeze pizza without any toppings. And the marinara sauce is SWEET. I was quite disappointed because this was highly recommended by our friends (who were probably drunk when they had this pizza).
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
While my family and I were in Philadelphia we stop by for some local pizza at a few different spots in Philly. One day we went to Lorenzo and sons and got a few slices. This is very thin style pizza and cheese which is great my kids liked it I liked and wife liked it this is a solid slice solid pizza for sure
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
largest slice of pizza I every had. its not the best its just extra extra large. stonner pizza. all you need is one slice. its just ok. the memorable part is just the extra large slice.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Outside, this looks like a plain old pizza shop. You only need to be in Philly for a short time before you come to realize that pizza/hoagie/cheesesteak shops are common in almost every Philly neighborhood. However, this pizza shop has reached almost cult status. They're known for their giant slices of plain cheese pizza. They are also the other half of the infamous "pizza taco" (seriously look it up if you haven't heard of it). I can't say I've tried a pizza taco but if it's late at night and you're starving after your bar crawl... it might just be what you're looking for. The quality of the pizza itself is decent and the amount you get for the price is enough to stave off my hunger. I'm usually having fun with a group of friends whenever I decide to grab food from here and that has given me a lot of fond memories from this place. I'm glad to see them open again after their fire and looking forward to more great pizza. Tip: this place is cash only and street parking can be difficult.

Patrick H.

Yelp
IS NOT open till 4am on Saturday evening (early Sunday morning) very saddened we couldn't order, sadly wasted money on an Uber to find out this out.
google avatar

Kimberly A.

Yelp
U want drunk pizza that's open late? This is it. No frills I believe cash only and the slices are ridiculously enormous. Don't expect amazing service you go in and go out! Not bad people just a spot for quick slices.
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
Honestly only giving 4 stars for the sheer size of the pizza. The dough was nice and soft, extra cheesy, and the sauce had a little bit of a sweetness to it that sets it apart from others. Not my favorite in Philly, but solid pizza (6.9/10).
google avatar

Vito B.

Yelp
Coming from NY pizza this spot has great tasting pizza and it's super plus in size I definitely enjoyed this pizza well worth to get a great slice in the town of brotherly love
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
Sure, 4$ a slice might seem like a lot, but considering that a lot of places change $3 nowadays for a slice much smaller and less appetizing, I could easily justify my purchase. The box cost should be factored into the price though. The quality of the pizza was really the best things about it, not just the size. Good ratio of sauce to gooey cheese, crust not too thick or thin, and they have toppings ready to add on your way out. The security outside was super kind, and I had an amazing time having my first Philly Taco on South St. this week!
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Huge pizza slices for not much money, does it get any better? Their slices are 14", so you probably don't need more than one. You order at the counter and then wait for your pizza to be ready. They have some standing tables you can eat at, but no chairs. It's cash only as well. We just got a slice of cheese pizza. It was really good. The sauce was a little sweet which I liked. The crust was light. Overall, a great hole in the wall spot with great, cheap pizza.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
This is a No Frills Pizza Joint on South Street. $4 for a huge slice of cheese (no toppings are allowed on the slice) They do have a 28" pizza which is huge that you can get toppings on. The gentleman taking our order was not friendly but its Philly and we were there for the pizza. This is standing room only so if its crowded, you will need to take it to go. It took 2 paper plates to hold our slice. T was bigger than our heads.
google avatar

Ali T.

Yelp
These won't be the best slices of pizza you have ever had... but they likely will be the largest. Cash only but at 4 bucks a slice you can afford it. If you have enough people or want leftovers, go for a whole pie. But ask for two regular boxes instead of the one massive box if you want to transport it easily. If you really want to try something decadent, go for a South Street Sushi (or South Street Burrito); wrap a Jim's cheesesteak in a slice of cheese pizza from here! Or just have one of each and alternate bites if you don't want to get sloppy... more than enough to share between two people.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
This has been a favorite of mine for a really long time. I don't mind the price increase, it's understandable. What really bothers me, is whoever slices the pies, is doing a horrible job. They are extremely uneven. The last few times I went in, the person either before or after me got a giant slice and I got a much smaller slice. I don't mind paying the $6 but I'd appreciate getting what I went in there expecting to get. Not an almost normal sized slice.
google avatar

Sajeeb A.

Yelp
Pizza is always good at 1 am when you are drunk and hungry. This wasn't. Pizza sauce isn't. It's sweet spaghetti sauce made by Rao. Trust me it's great to have this option and I didn't mind waiting 45 minutes after Coldplay. I like my New York pizza and this is a good option for that aforementioned.
