D.C. Chef Matt Baker Under Fire for Retweeting Texts Supporting the Firing Federal Workers and Deporting Immigrants | Eater DC

"The chef's first-ever steakhouse is slated to open this spring on the ground floor of a Kimpton-branded hotel, but the planned debut is now unfolding amid the broader controversy over his social-media activity that was documented by Anela Malik of @Feedthemalik and amplified by local outlets. The backlash has already produced public refusals to engage: supplier @clarkandhopkins wrote it "will NOT be engaging [Baker’s] places ever again," and social posts such as @lemonlimefluenced's "as a fired fed, no way will I support any of these restaurants" signal potential reputational and commercial headwinds for the upcoming launch." - Tierney Plumb

Go on a Friday!! The live jazz was amazing! It just keeps getting better and better! This would be about the 5th time I’ve been to Lucille’s. The first few times were a different menu. This new menu is really good! We had really great pizza and wings, and DELICIOUS mocktails! I’m looking forward to going back and trying out the rest of the menu!

Google
We were in town for my child's graduation and stopped here for brunch before heading for the airport. Very inviting atmosphere. Arianna was our server and she was awesome!! She heard me mention a food allergy in a conversation with someone else and made sure to inform the kitchen. The food and coffee were both very delicious! Definitely go see Arianna if you are in the area!!

Google
One of my go to cafés for easygoing weekends. Although I wish they had more food options, everything I’ve had there has been really good, and hearty. Love their matcha! I love that some evenings they have jazz, you don’t I wish find that around New York as much anymore.

Google
I love a quaint place when I eat alone, Lucille, Salmon Burger, and Hibicus Spritz are my comfort food. Oh my goodness, you need to try their fried Brussels Sprout (not shown). I had it the 1st time I ate there and an order to go. THAT GOOD!!!!!! They have Friday entertainment.

Google
Lucille’s is a wonderful place to grab great coffee with attentive and warm service, and a great vibe. The music is always great, as are the people. Lovely neighborhood spot to get great quality food and lock in when you need to get something done. Love the food, staff, and its cozy setting.

Google
Such a beautiful atmosphere in this place. Such a chill vibe to this place. Let me tell you something this place is a MUST, a GO TO. Everything is fresh and the food is affordable. If you're looking for a nice, chill, and cozy time to just spend this is the place.

Google
I came here for brunch. Very intricate venue with lots of Windows for natural sunlight. The menu is simple and versatile. Full bar and coffee stations. The staff is very friendly! However you have to place your order by the end of the counter. It is not a full service restaurant.

Google
I am crazy about this joint!! The patrons are pretty, the decor is lovely, food delicious and the service is great. They make good cocktails too. And did I mention that they have live music?? There is nothing bad about this fabulous neighborhood gem. You should definitely go.

Yelp
Lucille's is a great treasure of a find in a neighborhood that can be sketchy and a bit rough around the edges. Great vibe. Love the LGBTQ inclusivity. Great ambiance. Sometimes, it does take a little longer than it should to get the food, but it's a cozy place to chill and enjoy time with friends or your spouse, both of which I've done. And on certain nights, they have great live music. It's definitely one of my favorite spots in the area. The lack of a fifth star comes from the somewhat inconsistent service. The other night I was there on a Tuesday with a friend. We were the only table in the place. (There was one other, but they were finishing when we arrived) Our server stood at the bar chatting and never came over to us until we asked the bartender about it. This person was less than enthused. Dimmed the experience. Otherwise a great place.

Yelp
This is a great spot for drinks and food in the area. The space is cozy and the staff is friendly! I have not had a bad meal or experience here. I love the Kale Caesar salad the most. Drinks are all good especially the lemonade or chai latte. Space seems ADA accessible. No stairs required. One large bathroom in the back. It's always pretty quiet noise level wise. They sometimes host jazz nights. They also have a pizza shop right next door. You can also order the pizza in the restaurant as well. They have brunch, lunch, dinner and cocktails.

Yelp
We just moved in around the corner and I believe we just found our regular spot. This place is a total vibe. The food is delicious. The staff is awesome. Be back tomorrow.

Yelp
Had some dinner nearby and wanted some late night cocktails and came across this cute little corner spot. The vibes were definitely vibing. As we walked in we noticed there was a band set up and much to our surprise they started playing some nice jazz. For a Thursday night it felt like a buzzing Saturday night. We ordered the Up All Night which was a fancy espresso martini and the Hibiscus Mule which was a bit too tart for my liking. Cant wait to come back and try the food and other drinks!
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
They have jazz nights on Thursdays and Saturdays now throughout the summer. Beautiful place, great vibes. Didn't try the food but the drinks were good would love to go again for a meal and a vibe!
google avatar

Cris K.

Yelp
Live jazz on Thurs and Sat. It's the kind of place you'd have to go to understand what kind of energy it brings. The ambiance is lovely. The band playing was exquisite. My food, pretty splendid. I would definitely return!
google avatar

Tiff T.

Yelp
PLEASE COME AND VISIT!!!!! I loved love this menu and my favorite drinks *2 snaps*- Up All Night! This is their version of the Expresso Martini which I had 3 by the way and ughhhhhh taste on 100% The food chefs kiss. I came on a spoken word night and mmmmm I can't say nothing but COME CHECK THEM out. The place is perfect for a quick coffee, a meeting, or a group to come eat and drink for sure. The service is on point because the way the bartender made love to all my drinks smh mmmmm, it's all I try to compare. The vibes are 1000000% and great such vibe place.
google avatar

Goodness I.

Yelp
Had dinner here with a party of 9 and had a great time! Food tasted great! Our server was okay-not super observant/helpful as far as paying attention to the needs of the table (like filling up water/asking if we need the check). The pizza squares definitely took way longer than the rest of the food, so keep that in mind when ordering with a big group!

Yelp
Great decor, delicious food, and clean bathrooms are some of my favorite features of a restaurant I frequent. The prices are reasonable given the current rent most businesses are paying to occupy a space. My only complaint is the interaction with the wait staff. Although I did not feel unwelcome, I also did not feel welcome. Customer service appeared to be focused on regular customers or customers seated at the counter. The only interaction occurred when I initiated the conversation. I was never asked how my service was or if there was anything I needed. As the place was not crowded, this was not the cause of the lack of customer service. There is no doubt that this place is a gem in the community. If the customer service were improved, this would be the place we would visit when we are staying at our Harlem apartment.

Yelp
Service is always good. I think their ovens or toasters are too hot, or the kitchen burned my food intentionally so I would not be able eat it. Either way, do not order the bagel breakfast sandwich, it will be inedible from being burned to a crisp. Great place to study in Harlem!!!

Agnes M.

Yelp
My favorite local neighborhood joint. Spacious, comfortable, friendly, good carte and food + reasonable prices. AND, next door, the best pizza in town (at least one of the best thin crust tasty ones with good prices --- so far!)
google avatar

Yelp
Yes come here and eat , drink , be merry ! it's a lovely spot to chill . Food is delish ! I've been here for coffee in the mornings and it is also wonderful . I didn't order the chicken sandwich but every time i saw it come out of the kitchen my mouth watered. Great soundtrack and ambiance here . Great pizza too !!! Heard the wings are unreal here too . Things to try for next time

Yelp
During the day this place has lovely breakfast and coffee options. I came here at night so I'll speak on their dinner menu. You walk in to this quaint and open space with lots of wood tables and warm lighting. Their music fits the location they're in. It's a hidden gem. I ordered the lasagna and it was very good. The sauce was dense, meaty, and coated the pasta perfectly. I would definitely recommend it. If you do not like lasagna they have lots of other pasta dishes, pizza, salad and sandwiches on their menu. There is something for everyone here. As for drinks I ordered their electric root which includes gin, aperol, pineapple, lime, and dolin genepy. It was a very well balanced drink. Not too herbal nor citrus. I would definitely recommend it. All in all my experience here was great. It's a lovely space and the service was very attentive and informative. I almost forgot- this place has the best tiramisu I've had in this city.

Yelp
Food was perfect. Service was impeccable. The ambiance had me asking about the playlist Highly recommend this gem.

Yelp
Visiting Lucille's was a beautiful start to my morning. The music was soft, jazz and some nice tunes to get some reflection and writing done. I was the first to arrive this morning and the staff were truly engaging, helpful and also genuine. This was by far the best bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich I've ever had. Megan recommended this as a breakfast item and I'm glad I went with this choice. They had many options to choose from for the coffee/tea lovers and a nice selection for brunch cocktails! The area was calm and even as people came in, the greetings and conversation made this an ideal morning visit. I got a bookmark on my way out and the staff shared some writing/reading events happening in the area! Check Lucille's out if you get the chance!

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere with enough textured surfaces and space between tables to keep the volume levels at a friendly conversational level. Before 4pm, quite a few laptop warriors at tables with a few tables reserved for parties of 2 or more. Tasty orange juice with that fresh squeezed but sweet flavor (rather than bitter orange flavor.) The breakfast burrito was filling and hearty without being too heavy on oils. Apparently pastries are only available to those who arrive in the lucky early window of time to snag them before they sell out. Nice mocktail selection and music happenings during the week. There's also a social justice mission that isn't blatantly stated, but was revealed on a food mission program happening up the street where Lucille's provides meals for those in need. Always feels good to support a business that can give back to those in need.

Yelp
A few days ago I wrote a glowing review of Lucille's. Today I wish I had reason to be so generous. At 7:54pm I ordered a salad on seamless for pick up. The app said the food would be ready between 8:15 and 8:25. I arrived at around 8:20. There was a jazz set going so I was asked to wait outside. I waited. And waited. The young lady who I spoke to came outside a few times, but without my food. She was apparently serving others waiting outside. On the 3rd or 4th time seeing her, I asked about my order. She said she would check on it. She came back and asked what I ordered. I showed her the app. She asked if I'd like any modifications. I mentioned that I forgot to order grilled chicken because the app doesn't offer options for modifications on that line item for some reason. She took notes and went back inside. When she returned a few minutes later, she said that I could get the salad without the grilled chicken or pay extra (and wait longer). I took the salad and ran...without the chicken (at around 8:50). Here's my issue, if it isn't clear: Why take orders online if you are not prepared to serve patrons in a timely manner? Not only did I have to wait, standing up outside in the heat, but I had to wait for nearly 30 minutes for a COLD SALAD. The order was placed at 7:54. It took nearly an hour to put some leaves in a box. I get it. They were busy. THEN STOP TAKING ORDERS ONLINE. Period. And when I thought they were going to make things right by not charging me for the grilled chicken, I was disappointed again. The young lady was kind and seemingly genuinely apologetic, but not enough for me to not write this review.

Yelp
Love this place!! My friends live near here so I've came and had drinks and have also ordered through uber eats. I love the vibes and the staff is always so sweet. Their vodka pizza is SOOO good I get it every time, I honestly don't think I've tried anything else food wise bc the pizza is so good. Love the drinks, everything is so good! I love coming with friends, it's always a good time especially after a bad day at work (or if you're me, a bad dentist visit)

Maleek S.

Yelp
What in the world! This place blew my mind away, happened to come on the jazz night the vibes were amazing. Firstly the server named Vivika was awesome helped me immediately to the best Sav Blanc i've had in a minute (i love white wine)and figure out which pizza to get with so many dope sounding options. The bartenders are nice chatted with them until a table opened up to move to which they were super chill about. Service was quick, informed and friendly. Had several connections to the staff I found out. I ended up going for the Spicy Meatball Burrata, which felt like a crispy crunchy lasagna seasoned to perfection.

Yelp
ABSOLUTE MUST. This is such a hidden gem. Cocktails were so amazing, food was fresh and delicious. I highly recommend the kale salad and mozzarella sticks- all fresh. The service was out of this world. Our server was funny, kind, knowledgeable, and an absolute delight. The bartender is also one of the owners and he was working the bar and bussing tables which I find very cool. One of the best cosmos I had in NYC. 10/10 100% you should go! Also- great vibes. It is a good date night spot and is open late!

Anony M.

Yelp
Good food / cute vibes but saying free delivery and then charging a $4 service fee is both disgusting and criminal.
google avatar

JC T.

Yelp
I have had the artichoke pizza and the margherita, and they are both terrific. Note: If you order online, you have to get a whole pizza, but the shop always has a few individual slices available. Lucille's is a two door operation. The pizza comes from a hole in the wall, hot and crowded, with no place to sit. The staff is pleasant, helpful, and even chatty if they aren't way busy and you're in the mood. Around the corner is a rustic, roomy restaurant location with a bar. (It may have been a fern bar in a previous incarnation.) Eat your pizza, drink your beer, and/or write your novel in a classic neighborhood hangout.
google avatar

Lyn C.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying , the vibe was very calm . The decor is beautiful and it's a cute lil spot . What really got me was the fact that the shrimp and grits were TWENTY-FIVE dollars and they had the NERVE to only put three medium shrimp in my plate. I've never felt so disrespected in my life. THREE shrimp!!!? I know inflation, rent and gas is high or whatever but y'all are robbing people. At least use jumbo shrimp. The grits were very greasy and the shrimp were extremely salty. The truffle fries came out cold. I was so upset. Never again. If you do go, keep it simple and order coffee.

Yelp
Wow. What a lovely neighborhood spot. It's literally located on the corner- Macombs Place and 149th, right off 8th avenue in Harlem. Perfect location! The Happy Hour starts at 4PM... and there is CHAMPAGNE & MONTEPULCIANO for $10. YES. TEN DOLLARS (until 7PM). How perfect is that!?!? Everyone who works there truly know their stuff. Matt is an amazing bartender - the Cool Cucumber is perfect for the upcoming summer heat, as is the Henny Fashion is you are a whiskey fan. Christina took care of me while I dined at the bar- offering WiFi and multiple seating options - bar and table. If you live in Harlem, you should definitely visit - it will easily become a staple to your collection of eateries. Can't wait to go back - they have LIVE JAZZ NIGHTS on Thursdays!
google avatar

Tinesi P.

Yelp
The service, food and vibes are good! They have jazz nights Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8PM. Happy hour is every day 3PM-7PM (I always get the margarita which is $10). The kale salad was good and so was the truffle fries. I have no complaints and since it's close I'll pop in for a margarita. I think I like the drinks more than the food ... I haven't decided yet. But I will recommend this spot especially for a local happy hour.

Monika M.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and drinks. Great food and sometimes live music! Favorite neighborhood spot.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
Such a lovely café in Harlem! The interior is super cozy and I love the plants and décor. I only had coffee and pastries but my friend who lives in the area really like them for brunch. Would totally come back again if I'm in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy vibes, with big windows and lots of greenery. Baristas are friendly. Same owner as Oso down by City College. My large matcha with oatmilk set me back almost $7, and was served in a paper cup - no mugs. It was not particularly well whisked; there were lots of matcha clumps at the bottom of the cup. The lunch menu has a couple vegetarian options, but they feel like an afterthought. There's a hummus and roasted veg sandwich (or you could request the prosciutto + mozz sando without the prosciutto) and a kale Caesar salad (dressing might have anchovy). I ordered crispy brussels sprouts, which were listed as a side dish. They weren't crispy at all, probably because they were served in a covered takeout dish, but they were really tasty. $13 plus tax and tip is pretty steep though. Bagels are $4 dry, add a dollar for cream cheese or jam (only grape). My takeaway is that Lucille's is a great spot to catch up with a friend or do some journaling. Prices are a bit high, especially for the neighborhood, but I'm willing to pay more for the mood-bosting ambiance. Will likely return for dinner/drinks!
google avatar

Alexus S.

Yelp
It was fine but pricy and I feel like everything could have been better. However, the space itself is really cute and service was nice. I like how they had indoor and outdoor seating and that it seemed causal enough to study/do work but nice enough to hang out or go on a date. The food options were good but like I mentioned, the sandwich I got lacked in flavor and the bagel was meh. I really enjoyed my honey oat latte though!
google avatar

Yvett S.

Yelp
The bread was a little too dusty for my liking but overall the sandwich was good. Not pictured but I would recommend their signature Latte it was actually the best part. Otherwise a nice little cafe in the heart of Harlem.
google avatar

Joan D.

Yelp
Love. Love. Love Lucille's Cafe. The coffee, the breakfast wraps, the pizza, the vibe, the staff and the mid-week jazz. My favorite hang-out since moving to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Mardory V.

Yelp
Real plants, real people behind the counter, really warm and cozy ambiance. Lucille's is the new comer to the neighborhood where there aren't an abundance of places to enjoy some quiet time seated. It fills a much needed desire to commune by allowing just that. Some benches, some nooks, some tables, and even bar seating can be found here. People dont mind the option of communal seating but it is not enforced. Unfortunately, they allow people who bring laptops to park themselves but I'm hoping this will not become one of those type of cafes. Food is available at the counter but you can also grab a slice or pie from the takeout Lucille's next door. They offer libations during happy hour (4pm through 7pm) featuring a snappy standout Sangria among other things. They accept all forms of payment short of bitcoin and offer an assortment of dairy, non-dairy, simple syrups, teas and coffees. Not a bad place to be, if you can snag a seat for your party.
google avatar

yiannis p.

Yelp
If you're a little confused as to what Lucille's is, you'd be justified. Is it a café? Is it a bar? Is it a brunch spot? Is it a restaurant? The truth is...it's all of these things & they do it quite well. While I've only been for brunch (so far), the food, cocktails & service were wonderful, & the atmosphere was laidback, but well curated. Looking forward to going back on Thursday, for coffee w/ a friend. The neighborhood definitely needs more places like Lucille's.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Sweet staff, cozy atmosphere, great cocktails and amazing food. I can't wait to go back to Lucille's! Try the frozen hot chocolate, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
An earlier review categorized the vibes as immaculate and I must agree. You transport to a different city while sitting there. It must be the decor and the windows that were left open so a cool breeze came in. Ugh vibes were divine.
google avatar

Allison G.

Yelp
Great low key local joint, perfect for a tasty dinner or light breakfast. It's spacious interior is dimly lit making it perfect for an intimate night out! The pizza was fantastic and the service was quick and attentive. Can't wait to go back as I'll be quickly adding this into my restaurant rotation.
google avatar

Luis G.

Yelp
Here are some highlights of this very good bar: Vibes - immaculate Cocktails - delicious Chicken sandwich - to die for
google avatar

Danait K.

Yelp
Very rude customer service. Specifically two make waiters/bartenders. Short Spanish guy has the nastiest and most entitled attitude. As an owner, I wouldn't want my customers that type of service.
google avatar

Adrienne S.

Yelp
This was a neat little place. I wanted to come here because of who the owner is (I'm a big Alex Trebek fan). It had a very cool atmosphere, the staff was welcoming and friendly, and the food and drinks were great!
google avatar

Andrew Z.

Yelp
Nice food great service no complains. Best place to hangout with friends and chill. I will recommend it to anyone.
google avatar

Claudia G.

Yelp
A cute cafe in Harlem that has wifi, a lot of outlets at the bar so there's definitely enough space work on your laptop. There's also a bunch of tables and couches to work on too. It's a very cozy atmosphere, something that's sorely needed more of uptown. Check it out!
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
the food is really the best thing about this place. Came in for brunch one day- it is set up like a bar so no one comes to great you at the door but they have sit in option which is confusing. Waiter forgot my coffee completely but the one my friend got was delicious. The shrimp and grits are amazing. I liked the ambience and decor--seems like it would be a cool bar to go to at night as well.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
The place, music, staff is beautiful. I ordered the açaí bowl to go but I didn't like it. The açaí is mucky and not "frozen-like" as it should be. I am open to trying other things on the menu and staying in the next time I visit. Definitely a place to get some work done and clear your mind.
google avatar

Nicholas P.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to meet a friend while in nyc and couldn't decide if I wanted to chat over coffee or over a drink. I'm so glad I found this place and didn't have to decide! I got a beer and he got wine, both at happy hour prices. We both got the salmon burger, which we agreed was really good! The staff there was definitely very friendly and attentive. The place itself also had a cool aesthetic to it. I'll definitely be coming here again!
google avatar

Yahima B.

Yelp
I've been there before with my family and friends although the food is very expensive, it's good. My mom went there for her birthday and they charged her extra for OUR cake which was kind of annoying. I would recommend for fancy Harlem night out. Not for a normal lunch/dinner.
google avatar

Makayla P.

Yelp
Atmosphere is super cool here. The decor is soothing to the soul, along with the good music and friendly staff. Been here twice now and it's my favorite spot to go to for drinks in the neighborhood now. Had dinner here last night- tasted the fried chicken sandwich and ribs. Ribs were easily the best I've had in a couple years and the chicken sandwich was full of flavor and freshness. Excited to keep coming back to try everything on the food and drink menu. Cheers!
google avatar

Jasmin R.

Yelp
I enjoyed my food, but poor, racially charged customer service is a wild experience to have in Harlem in 2023 so I won't be going back.

Grace F.

Yelp
Couldn't ask for a better local bar. I find it hard to deviate from my normal order of a lavender mule because they're so good, but the other cocktails I've tried are great as well. Great energy especially on live music nights.
google avatar

Yelly D.

Yelp
This place is tucked away and super cute and cozy vibe. Perfect place to work on your laptop and just chill or have a little client meeting. Açaí bowl was great I actually hate coconut but it didn't even bother me at all. Fruits and oats were fresh. I also got a latte with almond milk, overall it was a great experience, friendly staff, and good quality food. Have to come back and try a lunch item.
