How a Family of Greeks Ended Up with an Iconic Italian Restaurant in the Deep South | Bon Appétit

"Opened in 1949 in a historic Broad Street building, this family-run restaurant is Augusta’s first Italian restaurant and the only survivor from that era, and it’s credited with introducing pizza to the city. Recipes dating back to the early 1950s are still used: Chuck Jr. makes sauces and sausages from scratch and keeps the family formulas in a little black book, while successive generations run the dining room and kitchen. The menu blends old-school Italian staples—tender lasagna, veal scaloppini, butter-soaked toasted garlic bread, and amber-toasted ravioli stuffed with molten ricotta and topped with a well-spiced house sauce—with Greek dishes such as moussaka, avgolemono, and a popular Greek chicken made with olive oil, lemon, and herbs; playful Southern touches appear too, like fried chicken livers with meat sauce. The dining room is a time capsule of midcentury Americana and Mediterranean kitsch: a hand-painted mural of Venice, a vintage Seeburg 100 Wall-O-Matic jukebox, an antique Coca-Cola clock, a straw-wrapped Chianti bottle, photos of Edward G. Robinson and Mae West marking the restrooms, a pressed tin ceiling, and crystal chandeliers. The restaurant has become a Masters Tournament tradition—springtime brings lines out the door and sidewalk cocktails for waiting patrons—and has hosted notable golfers and celebrities over the decades. Desserts and small details reflect the family’s Greek heritage as well (vanilla ice cream topped with crumbled baklava is a favorite), and the overall vibe is warm, deeply rooted in family history, and unchanged by trends." - ByVirginia Willis

Delicious food, good portion size to cost ratio. Greek salad was fresh, all entrees were hot and appetizing. Dessert was big enough to share (not that we did) and not too sweet for the tiramisu which I loved. Baklava cheesecake is a MUST. Add the meatballs to whatever you get.

I love this place. The food is deliziosa!!! Authentic fare! Phillip is an awesome server with a helpful laid back demeanor that knows his craft. He took very good care of my family. I recommend you come see him. You will not regret eating here. 10 stars!!!!

Google
After reading about the history of this place I was anticipating a perfect dining experience. I thought it fell a little short in the quality and preparation of the Food. However the atmosphere was very nice and the booth seating was comfortable and cozy. The service of the staff was adequate but nothing special to be memorable. Overall I was a little disappointed and I'm pretty sure that this will be my first and last time coming here. 😐

Google
Luigi’s never disappoints! I brought my visiting friend and her daughter for dinner. They both had the Toasted Ravioli and were very impressed. I had the Greek Chicken, which was perfectly seasoned and cooked as always. Our server Philip was attentive and friendly throughout. Penelope and staff can manage a packed house like no other restaurant team.

Google
The food was average quality. Lunch portions for dinner prices. Atmosphere was very authentic. Service was ok. New server. I'm very patient but no return to offer to refill drinks. My husband was having to "borrow" water from my glass. Won't be back

Google
My husband is an Augusta local but it was our first time dining here due to watching RHBH 😅 Unfortunately, I more than my husband was pretty disappointed because every dish I had was swimming in oil; I have never seen such thing before.. from the Greek salad, Pork Chops and pilaf rice was all soaking in oil. I just can’t imagine coming to an establishment with an appetite for oil, safe to say that I didn’t finish my salad nor the rice, took every oil possible off the pork chops and ate that bc it was very tasty with Greek herbs. My husband on the other hand had the Luigi’s combination Pizza and honestly it’s worth giving this rating a star bc it saved me from my dinner. I admire the antiques they left from 50 years ago and our server was very attentive.

We went here for the first time this weekend. The food was great and the service was friendly. I was surprised by the noise. There were lots of people so it was noisier than I expected, but it was still easy to have a conversation and the energy in the restaurant had a very positive feel (not rowdy like a sports bar or club). It was a good experience and we will plan to return!

Google
Was treated to dinner here tonight (11.23.24). Highly recommended. Our table tried the Toasted Ravioli - Greek spaghetti with brown butter sauce and Veal Parmisan with added italian sausage. BUT we all agreed the hit of the night was the Baklava Cheesecake - it was sweet devine.

Yelp
Ambience. A Service. A Food. A Price. A Love this Greek family run business with 3rd generation in Augusta over 70+ years I. The same location! Wow!!! Service always welcoming and friendly and always feel like my Augusta familiy when I come home when eating here. Its a tradition to always stop in after being away years. Tonight. I want to mention the especially delicious marinara. Loved the garlicky marinara sauce this go round! I just had to get some extra on the side to dip my warm bread. Tonight was extra delicious. Everything was cooked to perfections... albeit, remind me to get romaine versus iceberg lettuce... Get a caesar salad and ask for tomatoes... And ask...so they have anchovies?! My Greek pork was grilled to perfection moist and tastily balanced sauce of lemon pepper and olive oil tonight. I wanted to lick my plate! The eggplant parmesan was perfectly fried crisoy with the marinara sauce. Ahhh...and remind me Penelope makes me a mean dirty Hnedeicks Gin martini with pepperocinni!!! Always coming back for Augusta for delicious Greek Italian nostalgia!!! I'm a Fan!!!

Yelp
We went to Luigi's for our anniversary and we were glad we did! Service was friendly and unrushed, the place was intimate and lively, and everything we ate was delicious! Established in 1949, Luigi's is family owned and serves Italian and Greek fare. Everything tasted homemade and the seasonings were clearly family recipes. We started off with Spanakopita which arrived hot and tasty. This was followed by sharing a cup of Avgolemono Soup. The soup had a unique flair and was delightful. With our soup, we also had their Italian toast, which was fantastic. We both ordered the Chicken Parmigiana. This too was wonderful. The sauce on the pasta was so unusual and refreshing. The chicken was not smothered with cheese and the batter and chicken shone through and through. The portions were just right, even with appetizers. For dessert, we had Tiramisu. This too was clearly a family recipe. It was sweet, light, and enjoyable! Luigi's was definitely a highlight of our visit to Augusta. They know what good food and hospitality are all about. We highly recommend them!

Yelp
This place is such a great spot for food. From its Pasta to Even its Mozzarella sticks, its all just so good! The service was a little off with my order but it was still pretty fast! The atmosphere was very warm and from all the smells in the air, it was just amazing! Thanks!

Yelp
This was my first visit. It won't be the last. They took our number so we could walk around downtown while we waited for our table. We get the call and we're off. We get seated and the server came by to let us know she would be right with us. She spoke with us about different bar offerings (only downside- no bar menu). We order our drinks; we order our meals. And even though we didn't have room for dessert, we ordered Baklava to go! The restaurant is small but very busy. And now that I have tasted it, I see why they stay busy!

Yelp
If you want an amazing Greek-Italian fusion meal, with a classic ambiance and friendly atmosphere, look no further. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Augusta. When we eat here- we don't speak, but only because the food is so good. To drink, try the basket wine, it's a delicious red that comes by the bottle and is perfect to share. Try anything on the menu, but if you want some recs, here's what we get: baked Greek chicken with rice pilaf (You will dream about this chicken which is the granddaddy of rotisserie. You get half a chicken which is marinated for hours and fall off the bone delicious.) , and a Luigi's combo pizza. We usually split the 2 dishes so we get a taste of each. We have a nut allergy so the only dessert we have tried is the tiramisu, but it was the perfect finisher.

Steven P.

Yelp
Charming respite. Huge potential. Would benefit greatly from a substantial culinary upgrade - a highly educated chef, etc. Otherwise, one day it will simply die. The pasta sucks - replace it with Cipriani's at Bloomingdales. Waiters should not say to diners phrases like - "you still pickin'? That makes a diner want to reply - "I only pick my nose", etc.... Not an ideal dialogue.

Yelp
We walked in expecting great family owned Italian food. The 1950s ambience is wonderful except the food was mediocre. If you have an Italian restaurant you need to have a great marinara sauce ; This is too sweet. The pasta was mushy overcooked and chicken parmigiana had a coating so thick it could float. The Greek chicken was meh and the rice it came with had a weird taste. You are much better off learning to cook Italian cuisine yourself.

Yelp
Excellent food and superb service. I would recommend to anyone who wants an authentic experience.

Brenda B.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this restaurant on a rainy, weeknight while in town for an event at the Miller Theater. What a treat! I loved the ambiance and am glad that they haven't "modernized " this restaurant. It has a warmth. The service was excellent and the staff was hopping as every seat in the place filled! Granted is not a large place, but there was a wait line at 6:00 PM. We have been on a quest to find the "best" pizza. We ordered the Luigi's combo and was not disappointed. We would definitely eat this one again! We also had salads which were good. The house vinaigrette was delicious. I'm so glad that I didn't read reviews before we found ourselves at their door! I would have missed a memorable experience.

Yelp
I grew up in Augusta and remember Luigi's not being super delicious but decided to give it another shot this past weekend. It is absolutely worse than I recalled. Their sauce, which I heard my server tell another table isn't very good by saying "I don't care for our red sauce very much," is like the Italian version of sweet tea. There has to be 3 cups of sugar per batch. It's horrendous. We started with the "toasted ravioli," which were an abomination. I LOOOOVE toasted ravioli. Top 10 dish in my book. These were not that. Whereas a proper toasted ravioli is egg washed and dipped in seasoned breadcrumbs before frying, this was apparently dipped in pancake batter. Topped with that sweet sauce, it was inedible. We had 4 diners and 5 ravioli. Never in my life have I seen people try to convince others at the table to eat the last toasted ravioli. It was sent back to the kitchen. Unfortunately, the "pizzas" were no more of an improvement. I can't quite describe the crust, but it was crunchy with zero flavor. Someone at the table put it best by saying "this is like bowling alley pizza." The sauce and low grade parmesan did not help at all. As for the decor, let's just say the carpet looks a minimum of 6 years old and the place seemingly has received no love at all in the last 30 years. I would be terrified to see the state of the kitchen and walk-ins. It's not good people. Just because something is old, doesn't mean it's a classic.
google avatar

Burt M.

Yelp
I think the only thing thing this place has going for it is a little history. It smells old and musty. The booths are small and cramped. Food was mediocre. Service was also average at best. There are much better dining options in Augusta in my opinion. We had family in town that heard about Luigi's on tv and insisted we go.. our first and last time certainly.

Mike D.

Yelp
Great food and service. An Augusta icon that everyone needs to experience. The atmosphere takes you back to the good old days.

Paul J.

Yelp
Perfect date night spot! Delicious food, friendly service, and charming atmosphere! We love celebrating special occasions, having a glass of wine and a wonderful meal before a show or concert, or when we need some amazing comfort food with friends and family. You can't beat the Greek combination pizza with Kalamata olives!! *chef's kiss* There's definitely a reason famous golfers return to this restaurant every April!
google avatar

Shane B.

Yelp
A taste of Venice. As I came in I saw the mural on the left side of Venice. It quickly took me back to my travels there. I had a glass of red wine and simple chicken pasta Alfredo. Great good, cheers.
google avatar

Renée M.

Yelp
Looks like a happening place, you'd think as small family owned, quality of food and authenticity of the flavor would be great, it was most definitely not.
google avatar

Devin T.

Yelp
Not the greatest location but had really good food. The service was quick. Tried the baked lasagna, which was really good. The garlic bread was amazing. Ended with the Tiramisu. All together a good evening dinner.
google avatar

Ann Marie D.

Yelp
I'm glad I finally have opportunity to dine at this Augusta institution! We went on Friday night about 7 o'clock, and the restaurant was busy but not slammed. Our party of three did not have to wait for a table. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful with menu choices. We had the Veal Parmigiana the chicken Parmigiana and the Greek pork chops. The portion sizes were very generous! I had the potato wedges with my pork chops, and they were delicious! We were all very happy with our food. Luigi's has such a great vibe. It is definitely an old school dive type atmosphere. I plan on heading back soon, because I've got to try the delicious looking pizza that I saw on other diners' tables!
google avatar

Colleen D.

Yelp
This is one of Augusta's most nostalgic restaurants. The service is amazing, and the entrees are plentiful and affordable.

Steve S.

Yelp
Food served was left overs not even hot. Location in depressed area of Augusta Ga . Seems like a scene from walking dead desolated area. Place has not been renovated since 1949. Save your money . with food not being cooked enough could possibably get sick So much HYPE nothing worth the trip.

Gerald M.

Yelp
Old school setup for a family run Italian restaurant. started with a carafe of house Chianti....terrible, tasted as if sugar added, switched to beer. Greek salad was marginal, tired iceberg lettuce, four tomato wedges, good Kalamata olives, generous amount of feta crumbles. Not close to a horataki. star of the night was toasted ravioli, delicious, not overly sauced. Lasagna was a mess, layers disintegrated into gooey mess covered in cheese. Bake-off bread was okay. Server most pleasant and attentive and the place was full.
google avatar

Spencer V.

Yelp
Never again Can here after work just to try it out. The service was good but the person who took my order was a little rude and when she brought out my drink there was no straw. I waited 15 minutes and my food wasn't there so I hightailed out of there. I won't recommend this place at all. Better luck next time.

Joe H.

Yelp
I don't see how this restaurant has stayed in business this long. The food is terrible, it's unreal how long it took to get "Greek spaghetti" (butter with spaghetti noodles + Italian sausage--that was cold), and a personal/10" pepperoni pizza. The pizza is somewhere between Chuck E. Cheese and Costco quality. My family and I have lived overseas and traveled many times to various places in Italy and Greece, nowhere did we have similar cuisine to what was served at Luigi's. The Greek salad was 1/6 of a head of yellow lettuce, 4 thin slices of tomatoes, 2 banana peppers, and 4 Kalamata olives. The vinaigrette dressing was not edible. The service was terrible, from our waitress, although I will say there were other staff that seemed to be related that was serving their guests promptly and courteously. Our waitress seemed to be stressed and didn't want to be there, recommend she not be in the service industry if she can't be pleasant. The recent interview about this place is what made us think to try it out. I'm not sure if the news crew actually ate there or not, but the ambiance described as "cozy" and family friendly is misleading. First off the place is next to Vegas Girls, around the corner where we had to park, with a sign that highlights how they have maximum exposure. Next door there is a bar with people outside smoking and drinking. Inside the restaurant, it is outdated, to include the non-working jukebox machine at the front entrance and at every table. The booths are very likely the same installed in 1949, as they were small and uncomfortable. My family is an active family, runners, so we are not large or overweight people. The HVAC should also be looked at as the ceiling vent had black residue all around it--can't be good to be breathing this in! I would give this place a 0/5 if possible and wouldn't even recommend, if the meal was free.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally got to check out this unexpected gem smack dab in the middle of the seedy part of Broad Street. Please don't let location keep you away! The service was excellent and the food tasty. I tried the baked lasagna and my friend had the chicken parmesan. This is truly is a total experience dining destination! The decor of the place is just so authentic and cozy. The design of the ceiling alone is beautiful enough to have me return. If you are in to eclectic and unique dining experiences- this is the place to go. I'd recommend anyone come at least once!

Beth T.

Yelp
Terrible Italian food. Avoid the red sauce! The Greek half chicken looked good though.

Emmy P.

Yelp
We read reviews and said let's go! Family of 6, 4 kids 17 to 5 years and every single one loved everything. Veal Parmesan with their homemade meat sauce was amazing. My husband loves Italian and it's one of the best he has had! Chicken fettuccine, baked spaghetti with meat balls, and pizza was also so good. If you are making a stop in Augusta make the time to go here! Philip our server had hot mozzarella sticks with the homemade sauce on our table in minutes kids didn't breath and they were gone! Thanks for a great night out with the family! Don't hesitate go! Will be a stop for us when we make it back from Ohio!
google avatar

Bo J.

Yelp
I went there for their Friday spaghetti lunch. The food tastes as old as the place looks. It's amazing to me that they are still in business.
google avatar

Diamond P.

Yelp
I had lunch here with some co-workers. I was not impressed. I ordered the moussaka because I am in love with Greek food. It was very under seasoned and eggy. We had a large party and we were made to sit in the middle on this very small restaurant with the door inches from us and our table. The day was super cold and it was a lot to have people trying squeeze around us. I wouldn't really recommend this place.

Sawyer W.

Yelp
Love this place fr. Awesome service and you feel like you're going back in time when you step foot into it. They have a great lemon chicken soup!

Kristen P.

Yelp
Luigi's is my family's absolute favorite. We LOVE the Greek chicken and rice, lasagna with Italian sausage (extra cheese) and the pizza as well. It's perfect for a weekday, casual Friday dinner or special celebration--works for any occasion. Can't go more than a couple weeks without dining there.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
I love coming to Luigi's to have the baked spaghetti that is out of this world. The restaurant started in the 1940's continues the family traditions and recipes. I recommend this place if you want great food and the ambiance of Old Augusta. If you are in town for the Masters golf tournament- you never know who you will see.

Yelp
One of the worst dining experience I've ever had. Should have thought twice after I called for reservations on NYE. Told in harsh voice "we don't take reservations, just come in" and phone slammed down. Walk in, seated, gave a menu, waitress appears in a minute ready to take order. Tell her our first time visiting, need time to read menu. Order 2 glasses of Chianti. She brings wine out, about a 3 oz pour in a tiny glass. I decide on chicken livers with meat sauce over spaghetti and date orders Mahi-mahi and rice. Each of us orders salad. Comes out over dressed, swimming in tasteless dressing with a basket of crackers and butter. When dinner arrives, fish is white fish- looks like Gordon's precut fish over salty rice, and lemon juice. My dinner is a side of canned tomato sauce with over cooked spaghetti and fried chicken livers like you would get at a meat and three. Will say livers were cooked good, but for $12 not that good. Ask for bread, out comes one Kroger bake and serve roll, cut in half with finger indentation from who ever cut in. Not even warm. Order a baklava for dessert. Dropped off with check, no offer of coffee. Tried cutting, couldn't get through it. Call waitress over, telling her it is dry and tough. Picks it up,telling" no it's not". I'll take it off your bill. No check presenter, just a scribbled oRder pad check. Lay out credit card to pay and told just bring it to the cashier $55 for 3 glasses of wine,2 salads and 2 entrees. Tell cashier/ manager that food wasn't very good and told " we've been here over 60 years, you don't know good food" I was in hospitality industry for over 23 years, so I have a good idea about food. DEFINITELY not going back and I highly recommend you stay away
google avatar

Tyler G.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Never felt more unwanted as a customer. I will NEVER go here again according to the manager or owner he doesn't care because they've been in business 60 years. He didn't care if we were happy. Long story short, we came with party of 11 and wanted the two tables for 6 because one of our friends needed to prop up leg because she had surgery. He insisted on separately us after we had already been seated. But it was his wording that upset us. He "Does Not Need Our Business And He doesn't care." Yes he said that to 11 people who walked in his restaurant. We were flabbergasted.
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
The ambiance in this place is amazing and the service is just good. The food tastes amazing and came out quick even though the place was packed. We got some great deserts that completed an amazing meal
google avatar

Eric E.

Yelp
Been told all the food is very good every time I come into town I want to try something different but I keep ordering the Greek chicken with fries lol dip the fries into the sauce off the chicken man I think I have died and with to heaven.
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
best Italian food I have ever had, started out with a salad and the Italian sausage. Chicken Parmesan for the meal and baklava for dessert couldn't be more pleased with the food and the service was great too. I had so much fun playing with the juke box too!!
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
Ambiance was nice. Reminded my wife and I of the old Italian restaurants in NY City and Chicago. Service was very good. The food was not. We ordered a Greek salad and a large combination pizza. The salad dressing had almost no flavor and was super watery. The pizza almost exactly resembled a Red Baron pizza from the grocery store. Not worth the time, effort, or money.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Wow this place has spiraled down hill fast. Used to be an Augusta staple. These days the food in just above inedible "not fit for eating" and their Hostess's and Wait staff are borderline hostile. Definitely will not be returning.
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
A fine little gem tucked downtown. A must experience if you like something local and non-franchise. P.S. If you're here for Masters 2018, give it a whirl. Come early and enjoy a step back in time.....who knows, you may see some celebrities while here.
google avatar

Valerie L.

Yelp
What a quaint little restaurant...old timey music plays overhead that sounds like the crooners from the 40s & the Andrew Sisters Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. You can sense this little place is a staple of the Broad Street community. Pleasant atmosphere & Amanda took great care of her guest. The food is freshly made. I recommend the Minestone Soup & Chicken Parm but be advised that its not a spicy Italian or overly garlic. It's mild in flavor yet very filling. They also have traditional Greek dishes too. I would dine here again.
google avatar

Hambri Enta M.

Yelp
If you are hankering for lots of pasta, go here. It is very popular, and the ambience and patrons go hand in hand! I was able to work from my laptop as they had wifi. I had dental work done and could not eat anything that was too solid, so I ate pasta here and a salad. Is acceptable but definitively not elevated Italian,
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
Fantastic family style Italian restaurant. Try the tiramisu - it's home made!
google avatar

Dave L.

Yelp
Great local place. Really unique setting not expected. The service was very attentive. I have the Greek chicken that was very good and used the bread to sop up the juices. I can recommend this for anyone looking for a good loc
google avatar

Skylar S.

Yelp
The food was amazing, and the story behind the building is amazing. This is perfect for dates. I love it so much that I will keep going back. I love how good the sauce was.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
Still my favorite Greek restaurant. Fabulous authentic cuisine and the best and most attentive service found anywhere.

Dory I.

Yelp
I ate there with a friend for the first time today. The food was not fit for a dog or pig to eat. The server was rude and did not take the order correctly. The manager was not any better in helping. For the price it is a shame that it was a bad experience. It does not rate any stars.
google avatar

Logan P.

Yelp
This is definitely not the best place to eat. We had a party of 5 and they wouldn't sit us at a decent size table and made all of us sit around a SMALL circular table, when we asked for a larger table the owner told us no that we had to hold the table till a party of 6 came in like... ok. I had gotten the toasted ravioli and I'm not complaining it wasn't the worst but it wasn't the best. The ANTIPASTO was very good. The service was good. So if your looking for a small rude manager restaurant and okay Italian food with small tables for a lot of people Luigi's is the place to go!
google avatar

Fred D.

Yelp
My friends from work and I have a Tuesday night dinner club and this was a chosen place about 2-3 months ago. This place opens at 5 pm. We were early. There were 5 of us. When the place opened, we sat at a 6 seat table. We were told that we could not sit there and were directed to sit at a 4 seat round table. The waitress was not very friendly and seemed to ignore us. Beer selection was minimal and the only "good" beer on the menu was not stocked. So we had to settle for a domestic beer. The lasagna that most of us ordered was more like a soup with noodles. Marinara sauce was good despite the odd presentation of this lasagna plate. Never witnessed anything like it. We had to keep asking for more bread. Meanwhile, thru our entire meal, did anyone sit at the 6 seat table! Spend your hard earned money at a place that appreciates your business, not here!
google avatar

Blue O.

Yelp
The atmosphere is great... but that's about it. The food took forever to come out and people that ordered after us got their food quicker that we did, and we did not have a big party, just three of us. The pizza had barely any cheese on it and was rock hard. The chicken Parmesan wasn't the worst but it tasted like a cheap frozen TV dinner. The Italian side salad was the most horrible thing ever, there was so much chopped up raw garlic on it that it was bitter and spicy, the vinaigrette was so bad. Absolutely awful. I think the interior is neat and everything, but the food is mediocre at best.
