On the Grid : Madcap Coffee

"Madcap boasts the highest quality coffee and highest concentration of hipsters of all the downtown coffee shops. At their sun-filled location, they roast their own beans and make a mean pour-over." - Fairly Painless

The 26 Best Things Made in Michigan’s Cities | Eater

"Leading the charge on high-end caffeinated beverages in Grand Rapids, Madcap opened in 2008 and has continuously impressed aficionados with its freshly roasted seasonal coffee beans named for its farmers, its obsession with the science of coffee brewing, and its fastidious commitment to quality and staff training (baristas have to earn their spot at the espresso machine). Madcap’s seasonal drink offerings look more like cocktails than your typical pumpkin spice latte. Recent autumn drinks included Hot for Teacher (espresso, cayenne, and apple cider) and Peck’s Drug Store (nitro cold coffee, cranberry, lime, tarragon, and cacao juice). They now have three cafes in Grand Rapids and one in Detroit." - Vox Creative

Great local coffee shop in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. I tried the dirty chai latte and it was fantastic! There was plenty of seating on a Saturday morning but it filled up fast around 10am. Lots of great coffee and pastry options.

My mom and I visited this Madcap location on a Wednesday morning and it was lovely! I wasn't too busy and we were able to find a table easily. The staff were friendly and efficient with our order. I got an iced mocha that was the perfect balance of chocolate and espresso. My mom got a chocolate chip cookie that she really enjoyed. I loved all the plants that this location has as well, it really made the place feel homey! Great spot in Grand Rapids!

Every morning while visiting Grand Rapids, I start my day with your coffee. The staff here are always friendly and knowledgeable. I truly enjoy the thoughtful conversations — about everything and nothing — that make this place special. Thank you for keeping local business strong!

Visited here for the first time yesterday! The vibe was very simple: elevated coffee lounge, with a small crowd of people. Very bright atmosphere! The staff were the highlight of our visit. My partner and I ventured out with two menu items that ultimately did not end up being our preference. The selections would be very excellent, however, for those who enjoy coffee that has varying flavor notes to explore. The baristas were SO kind and offered to make us replacement drinks, which ended up being perfect for what we were looking for! Customer service alone made this a 5-star experience, but the coffee was great as well. 😊

This is honestly the best coffee I have ever tasted. I am pretty picky when it comes to my lattes, especially my iced mochas (which is my go-to order at any place). I always look for a mocha that is rich in flavor, creamy, and not watered down by ice or too much milk. I don't want straight chocolate syrup, but I also don't want straight espresso taste. This mocha is the perfect balance of a rich flavor profile & super creamy with some foam at the top. I don't know how else to describe the flavor but perfect. I would 100% go back again whenever I am nearby. The staff were pretty friendly but it was also really busy, so I was in & out. The environment was busy but not overwhelming. A lot of people were there for meetings, work, socializing, etc. 10/10 would recommend, and no, I'm not getting paid to say this. I'm genuinely having the best day because of this mocha. I also never leave reviews but I just had to.

I think I’ve found my favorite coffee shop! I’m in from out of town staying around the corner. Searched for a local coffee shop and found Madcap. Loved everything about this shop! The person at the counter took the time to converse which I always appreciate. There is some limited outside seating which was nice. Plenty of inside table and counter seating. A great place to sit with family/friends to converse, or to sit and get some work done. Open and comfortable space with a minimalist approach to decor. Let’s the coffee equipment shine! Also, take the time to look at the decor remnants at the top of the back/brick wall. Beautiful! Oh, and the latte was terrific!! They roast their beans locally!! Pastry assortment was not huge, but tasted great and displayed well.

Ahh what a fantastic shop. Glad I finally made it here. Good beans. Good coffee. They know what they're doing. Great layout and theme.

I was visiting Grand Rapids today while my daughter had a closed athletic event a few blocks away. I always try to find a smaller cafe’ ☕️ anytime I’m out and about. After driving around a bit, I decided to go park at a garage and walk over to Madcap. I went in about 3:15 and promptly ordered letting them know I promise I wouldn’t linger as I saw they closed at 4pm .The gentleman Sam assured me it was not a problem. We talked a bit about the coffee blends but then I decided on a mocha latte’ with oat milk and it was delicious! Sam was patient and kind while I made my selection. The atmosphere was nice and chill but seating fills up quick! While waiting for my coffee I started chatting with another barista, Riley. She had very cool glasses. They got a huge rush of about 20 people who walked in about 30 min before closing and before I knew it everyone was served and gone. They moved quickly and efficiently! I will be back in GR in June and hope to return to try an iced coffee this summer ☺️
