The Best Bakeries in Houston | Eater Houston

"Frederic Fortin’s Downtown bakery, Mademoiselle Louise, is named for the French pastry chef’s grandmother and is known for its bounty of sweets and freshly baked bread. Give into plated desserts like the fluffy Parisian flan or the strawberry tart glistening with fresh fruit topping, and keep an eye out for the bakery’s famed gallete des rois, offered seasonally." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
That urge to checkout coffee shops once you landed in the new city! This is one of the top rated cafe for ambiance and pastries. It didn’t disappoint me one bit. There are enough tables inside and outside the cafe & the ambiance is great, clean with a lot of natural light coming in that beautiful Saturday morning! Pastries looked great & tempting. I ended up getting an almond croissant and Mocha latte. Loved every bit of it. Croissants were fresh & flaky :-)

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mademoiselle Louise is hands down one of my favorite spots! I’ve known the owners for over 6 years, and it’s truly a family-owned gem. Frederick, the owner and the most incredible baker, pours his heart into everything he creates — you can taste it in every bite. Their tuna sandwich deserves a special shoutout — it’s honestly the best I’ve ever had! Perfectly balanced, fresh, and flavorful — every time I visit, I can’t resist ordering it. If you’re looking for authentic French pastries, fresh bread, and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, Mademoiselle Louise is the place to be. Highly recommend!

Google
A regular customer here. Their pastries are incredible. They have a lot of staff to constantly feel anything that’s running out and it’s all fresh. All the employees are very kind and sweet. They really love the vibe. Suitable for people from all background.

Google
This is in my top 3 french patisseries here in Houston. Perfect for lunches on-the-go or a quick coffee date! The croissants are light and flakey with tender insides. The flavors in the quiche are simple, yet fabulous. Do not skip the canele, it’s a real treat for the palate.

Google
Nice little boulangerie in downtown. As with everything downtown expect to pay for parking, but it’s worth it. The chicken and goat cheese quiches were both excellent. The canale was also very good, but my favorite was probably the chocolate almond croissant. It had just the right amount of flakiness. Black coffee was also excellent.

Google
Very cute coffee shop with sandwiches and pastries. Enjoyed the smoked turkey with a chai latte. Will come back to try the pastries. Good service too!

Google
the coffee flavor is very nice and the syrups come through very well. the staff are extremely nice and the pastries are extremely good. especially the tart, canelé, and lemon cake which were superb

Google
Awesome french bakery/cafe. Greta atmosphere to just sit and relax. Delicious pastries - highly recommend their pain au chocolat. Coffee tasted good - not sour.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bakeries in Houston! My fiancé and I come here at least once every two months. His favorite pastry is Kouign Amann and will always get that every time. For myself, I like to try something different every time. I haven't had anything that I didn't like! Everything is so beautiful too! It really gives French patisserie vibes with the attention to detail. The picture is of an apricot rosemary pecan cake. It actually was not a cake inside but some sort of frozen cream with an apricot in the middle and a pecan crust. It was delicious and unique! And the rosemary flavor came through strong. We also really love the ham and Brie sandwich.

Yelp
The coffee was good, but the pastries were dry and not as fresh as expected. Even early in the morning, many croissants were already gone. The automated menu board changed too quickly to read, making ordering stressful. While waiting to order, I saw a man, presumably the manager, yelling at an unhoused man outside. We bought the man outside a coffee, but a few moments later, the manager approached us rudely, telling us not to help him. It felt unprofessional and demeaning. We believe in showing compassion to everyone. This experience was disappointing, and I hope the management can become more empathetic.

Yelp
The parking is painful, but the place is cute!! I'm not itching to go back, but the coffee did the trick.

Yelp
Such a cute little bakery downtown! We had to try this place because of the good ratings and definitely enjoyed it. The guy that helped us was also very fun and friendly and suggested the best for us. He even pointed out my Star Trek shirt by holding up the Vulcan sign . Love it! You must try the pistachio croissant, so beautifully done and it is just the right amount of pistachio. I wanted to try the raspberry one too, but next time. The Kouign-Amann was also prob one of the best I've had. We also had to pick up a dog biscuit for our friends' doggo. Overall, simple bakery with quality pastries. Everything we had was well done and delicious. Everyone keeps mentioning that there's just street parking, but they also had easy and free parking in the garage nearby with spots specifically for this bakery and the salon. We will definitely visit every time we are in town. Thanks for the great experience!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent selection of fresh, high quality French breakfast pastries. My favorite is the croissants (especially pistachio when available), so perfectly buttery and crispy! There is both street and garage parking which is convenient for downtown.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
Wow a cute place off Main and Jefferson, street parking on Jefferson available. Fairly large open space and high ceilings with nice light and calming interior, relaxing jazz overhead. I see them making the pastries through the window!! Pluses 1. Pastries made in house!! 2. Meat pies tasty and flaky Areas to improve None I'm so excited to try this place, will update review once I eat the cakes! Highly recommended if you are downtown, fine if you are solo, but I bet this would make a great date place too!!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! Found it thanks to a friend from work who recommended it and me and my friends have become regulars! The baked goods are delicious - my favourite is the Kouign Amann and the quiches are great too. I haven't tried the baguettes yet, but my friends loved them! Definitely a must-visit place!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! We tried the Strawberry tart, Pistachio croissant, chai tea (iced & hot), as well as the mocha coffee. Everyone who helped us was very friendly! You will not be disappointed! Presentation is beautiful. The taste is even better! 10/5. Don't skip!

David G.

Yelp
Nice late breakfast spot near downtown Happy to find. Prices are good, very tasty and fresh. Veggie quiches are excellent. Recommended for fresh morning bakery items.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Mademoiselle Louise. It's such a cute little coffee shop. The pastries are to die for and the cold brew is perfect.
google avatar

Michele S.

Yelp
The place was what I hoped it would be; a nice spot for tea with a good friend. The chocolate croissants, blueberry and lemon tarts, and quiches I ordered were delicious (not all eaten by me ). The staff were knowledgeable and bilingual French and English.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Cute French bakery in DT! It's located at the corner of an intersection and there's some street parking. Got one of their pastries and sat by the window. Loved the ambience and service.
google avatar

Sameet R.

Yelp
Cute cafe with excellent staff. The guy who made my cappuccino was friendly and cute. We tried a few of the pastries and my favorite was the lemon blackberry mouse cake. The eclair was a little hard but the lemon tart was yummy. We stopped by midday but there were still lots of pastries in the case. Metered parking is limited.
google avatar

Hannah L.

Yelp
Best croissant I've had in Houston - absolutely delicious and well made. Small spot - but there were a few people working/dining there on the weekday afternoon I stopped by. I also ordered a quiche and cappuccino for lunch. Both very nice. Service was satisfactory Parking was tricky - there are a handful of free spots in the parking garage reserved for customers. When I got there they were taken and I needed to pay to park in the garage or on the side of the street downtown.

Yelp
Great pastries and excellent bread/sandwich. The have plenty of fresh croissant, sweet pastries, and savory selection. The coffee is not special but not terribly bad (the reason I gave 4 stars). I have not tried their pistachio croissant because they run out of those pretty quickly. Overall very good place if you want to enjoy some fresh pastries or get some good healthy sandwiches. I recommend you give this place a try.
google avatar

Char L.

Yelp
Beautiful desserts! They all look like little works of art. Croissants are large. I had these as take out in a box a few hours later, so the croissants I experienced didn't have the flakey crust. I was a bit disappointed in that. I wonder if it is flakey if you consumed immediately at the bakery.
google avatar

Phoebe H.

Yelp
Cute bakery in downtown with the classics! I wished they had kolaches which were shown in previous reviews, but they did have empanadas which were good. The almond croissant was my favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
After an early flight, we decided to try this spot for coffee and pastries. Located downtown, an inviting, cozy interior with high ceilings and mixed seating areas. Semi busy around 9:30 Friday morning. Street Parking (metered) is available right next to the restaurant. A great selection of desserts and pastries including Quiche. The display is so enticing you want to take one of everything. From the visible ovens, looks like all is baked onsite. We ordered a couple of Cappuccinos and an Americano. Strong, tasty Cappuccinos. The croissant and Pain Au Chocolate were huge and tasty. Couldn't pass up the Pistachio Croissant which you don't see often-delicious! Customers are greeted as they walk in which is a nice touch. Friendly and upbeat people behind the counter make for an excellent service experience. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Its ok. Nice croque monsieur though a bit soggy. I came on a busy Sunday afternoon. The man who was running the coffee station was only making one coffee at a time at a snails pace, which was bizarre. Wasn't sure which French effect they're going for between the wait and seeing "Le ham" and "Le tuna." Got coffee close to ten minutes after food. It was ok, probably will come back but definitely not on a weekend.
google avatar

Xiaolei C.

Yelp
Amazing pastries!!! Very authentic tasting. They have a wider selection of pastries than another great French bakery, Magnol. Their baguette is perfection. The canele is just right- crunchy crust outside with soft custardy interior. New item I tried this time is the pistachio croissant which was very flaky with perfectly separated layers and a not too sweet green pistachio cream inside. French flan also very good with thin crust on bottom. Service was prompt. Sleek modern interior. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
I've been to Paris and let me say, this is the closest thing to Paris in all of Texas!!! I've been craving a real French croissant for months and I came here and OMG it was like I was back in Paris sitting at a little cafe! Definitely recommend the croissant and I also got a sandwich which was AMAZING!! If you're looking for Paris in Houston, here you go.
google avatar

Lilly J.

Yelp
Good coffee, friendly staff and beautiful pastries! I ordered a veggie quiche and a croissant and both were great. The croissant was as flaky and buttery as it should be.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this bakery for the longest time but its location makes it difficult to drop by early enough to get some baked goods. Today, I got their almond chocolate croissant and loved it! It's reasonably priced at $4.75 and I enjoyed the fillings (mostly almond). It wasn't too sweet and I was able to eat most of it without my throat hurting (it's hard to find an almond filling that isn't too sweet these days), and the croissant layers were fluffy and buttery. I was honestly surprised how it met my expectations. The woman who was behind the counter was really nice. The shop is cute and good place to work but not too many tables open when I came at 10 am on a weekday.
google avatar

Oris B.

Yelp
The overall atmosphere was okay, I guess. Not many drinks, teas and coffees to choose from but I still found something to satisfy my appetite while I worked remote from the office.

Yelp
As many times as we passed this place up, I have never seen it or atleast paid attention. So glad I did. This place is so so so clean! We were rushing, so next time I'll make sure to take interior pics and off the menu! Great find, literally perfect location!
google avatar

Fumi B.

Yelp
So glad I found this gem of a French bakery café. They serve high quality and freshly made baked goods and offer a variety of sandwiches and café drinks as well! I'm honestly shocked I'm just learning of them but so glad I found them. I believe they are still fairly new to the area. The interior and vibe is chic but also warm and authentic. A little taste of France right in our own backyard. The staff is hardworking, kind, and do their best to deliver great service. So far I've tried their blueberry muffin (so good), chocolate croissant, and hot mint tea. I look forward to trying some of their beautifully designed desserts! I'd absolutely recommend a visit- it has the perfect vibe and space for a lovely afternoon tea or relaxed get together over coffee and a pastry.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop in downtown. There are free designated parking spots within the garage, however it's limited. Worth a shot to check before looking for parking elsewhere. The latte is good, but not on my top three. Coffee lacked any particular notes, but it was still a nice drink to have while conversing and watching the cars go by. Latte art unfortunately projected a care free attitude or inexperience, unless the barista meant to make a cloud on purpose. The croissant was on point. It wasn't even that expensive for an authentic croissant in downtown. A plain only costs $3.50 (as of Dec 2022). Give this cute cafe / bakery a shot!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute, quaint place in the middle of downtown! Sat outside and ate this, wow. Coffee was actually good, I had my own non-dairy creamer. I would go back anytime, I'm back in Houston.
google avatar

Natalia R.

Yelp
Parking - Street parking and a parking garage around the corner. Service - friendly and they bring the food and drinks to you. They also clean up so you can leave your empty plates. Food - Fresh! Croissants were buttery and flakey and had a decent amount of filling inside! Flavorful and the food is appealing to look at too. Well executed on all fronts. Great for pics ;) Coffee - strong and happy they have non dairy options.
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
It's a bakery shop located below skyhouse apartments downtown. It was ok. They didn't have variety of pastries.. You have to pay to park just like anything downtown and the sitting area is extra small.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited here one rainy morning and circled the block once before I realized there was complimentary parking in the adjacent garage for this complex. Five spots designated just for this particular retail space! A sign indicates you must enter through the main street door, but I noticed a few people still entering and exiting the door along Jefferson. It's a cute spot in a fairly unassuming location of downtown, although it is facing Main and along the rail line. Inside is your usual selection of French pastries, baguettes, sandwiches, and coffees. I ordered the chocolate chip pecan cookie, almond chocolate croissant, and an iced caramel latte. At least I tried to order the iced latte, I said it 2 times in fact but they still managed to bring it out hot! That's my biggest complaint during my visit. The croissant is really delicious and I would definitely order this again, flaky, buttery, all of the above. The cookie was simple, fresh, delicious, rich, but not too overboard. They obviously use high quality ingredients in the cookie. Is it the best cc cookie in Houston, well I wouldn't go that far, but it's a very good example. Most of the seating is along the windows. They have a few 2 top tables, 1 4 top, 4 bar stool spots along window facing main and 4 low chairs along the window facing Jefferson. By the front door, they have a couch / Instagram area. The restrooms need a key, so that gives you an idea about the area....of course they want to keep out the non-paying customers like anywhere else. About 10 single men came in for orders immediately after I arrived, maybe it was just the time of day I visited, or men like these kind of places too, not sure. Eventually women began to patronize the place around the time I was finishing up. I finally got my cold drink right before leaving when I ordered an iced tea. It's very yellowish, compared to Texas style teas, and the reason why is because it is an Asian style tea like you would likely receive from a restaurant in Chinatown. They did make it sweet for me. So it was refreshing after all the sugar I had just eaten.

Yelp
Stopped by this coffee shop as I typically prefer to purchase from local shops instead of places like Starbucks. This one in particular did not disappoint. When I approached the doors I could see that it was pretty busy on a Sunday morning around 9:30am but upon entering I was greeted by the staff who immediately had several baristas tackling the long line of customers.. the shop itself is a pretty good size and had a cute neon sign that I imagine gets lots of photo ops. I ordered just a hand and cheese croissant as I was in a time crunch and the croissant itself was sooo buttery, flaky and flavorful. As someone who orders croissants often this was one of the best I've had outside of France. Very pleasant first experience!
google avatar

Simone S.

Yelp
Great quiche options, good bread - a bit pricy for bakery items but definitely delicious! The baguette is closest to what you'd find in France.
google avatar

Lisa Marie M.

Yelp
Stopped in to pick up some pastries for a meeting. I personally tried the pain aux raisins, the almond croissant, and the cinnamon roll and all three were excellent. We ended up going back in the afternoon because my colleague was craving another palmiere and I wanted to try the lemon tart. The selection was smaller in the afternoon so go early if you want to be sure that your favorite item will still be in stock.

Yelp
Nestled in downtown Houston below some lofts, this quiet coffee shop/bakery is a place worth visiting. My husband and I came here on a Thursday morning to enjoy some breakfast. There were only a few customers when we arrived, given that it was a Thursday morning. The staff was super attentive and the (I presume owner), had a really neat French accent! Walking in, you are greeted by tall ceilings and a display case full of quiches and baked goods, consisting of multiple flavors of croissants, baguettes and other French pastries. I ordered an iced latte and my husband and I shared a plain croissant. The iced latte was satisfying but the croissant was the real star. We enjoyed every single flaky, buttery layer. The delicate pastry is made in house, as you can watch them make the croissants and other items through a display window. The ambiance was welcoming and warm, yet aesthetically clean and modern. I definitely recommend this little coffee shop, if only for the croissant alone!

Yelp
Great attention to detail, nice cool shop but good flavor and choices from drinks to food or desserts. Take a baguette to go! Nice setting worth a stop with a friend to chat and catch up or take a breathier. Pastry chef comes out and talks, co-owners or also helping out with service. Tasted croissants ( almond & chocolate) Hot chocolate Chicken salad sandwich Ham&cheese Everything is GREAT!

Yelp
This place was a pleasant surprise. We were in the area and were craving a croissant and coffee, and stumbled upon this place. We walked in and were delighted. It was so spacious and clean. You can tell it's a local favorite because there were several people that you could tell were ordering their usual. What was popular was their baguette sandwiches, and their chocolate almond croissant. While we didn't make it in time for the chocolate almond croissant, we did get our hand on an eclair and a Nutella stuffed brioche. And oh my was it DELIGHTFUL. I assume the staff there are the owners based on how carefully they were tending to all of their customers. We devoured our food before we got a chance to take a picture, but we'll definitely be back. :)

Yelp
A real French bakery in downtown when you can slow down and enjoy life and escape from the hustle and bustle of the business district. Their quiche has the best crust, it must be the butter. Fresh ingredients. The strawberry tart is lovely as well. Coffee on point. Just a fun place to sit with beautiful decor. Pastry heaven, even the cookies are thick. Great place
google avatar

Sophia K.

Yelp
The cafe had a wonderful atmosphere and interior. I loved the spacious feel with the large windows. The coffee was delicious, with perfect acidity, and the aroma of fresh coffee was subtle and delightful. Above all, the bread was incredibly tasty. The staff were very friendly, and if I go to Houston again, I'll definitely revisit. I even shared with my friends how delicious the bread was they must go try it
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday morning. I opted for the chocolate almond croissant and a cappuccino. I thought the pastry was very good, as I usually don't see the combo of those 2 flavors, but the cappuccino was pretty mediocre. The parking is street only, so that can get challenging at times. My dining partner got the raspberry tart, which was beautiful and equally as tasty. She enjoyed her London fog. Service was friendly. The menu wasn't up initially, so we had to ask them to project it, but overall, service was helpful and it was an enjoyable experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Love their bakery and latte It was really good Got the strawberry tart, not too sweet The the cheese-cream are really good Light but full of texture The service is good The coffee comes from the local roaster love it The store is clean and organized Great location but a little bit hard for parking
google avatar

Yelp
This place is wonderful. The staff are friendly, sweet, and helpful. I work nearby and regularly grab their smoked salmon sandwich (made with a baguette that I adore even though I'm not usually a bread person... I know, wtf, right?), and my coworker is obsessed with their ham and brie one. I'm not one for sweets, but I enjoyed their pan au chocolate (not too sweet, so perfect for me) and my coworker likes their lemon... Tart? Idk. I also had the pleasure of having their Yule Log this Christmas. It was a bit smaller than expected, given the price, but that was okay because it was just for my mom and me. It was quite decadent!
google avatar

Shirin L.

Yelp
I was craving a sourdough bread and someone posted this place having really good breads and also posted a pic of a sourdough bread. I was super excited about trying it. This was a great French bakery/cafe with a limited menu of things they offer, which makes your decision very easy. I asked them for their sourdough bread but they said they don't have any and only make it when someone orders them :( I was quite disappointed to hear that. We ended up ordering Thai Americano, cappuccino and a chicken sandwich. The drinks were ok but the sandwich was quite good. They are very reasonably priced for the size of offerings and the neighborhood they are in. The place is very nicely done, clean and has some nice furniture. The chef/baker was informed by the cashier about how we came there for their sourdough bread and that they didn't have any. He came to our table to ask us what kind of sourdough were we looking for and took a lot of interest in our diet and gave us some really good advice in our selection of breads. We were very impressed by their service!

Yelp
Oui oui oui! Si bon! Stoked on a real French bakery in Houston. Thank you for bringing this here. Smart owners.... in addition to there classic French bakery items that are amazing, real baguettes, airy almond croissants, beautiful quiche, they have a kolaches for local taste. Epic coffee. Smiling faces. Beautiful baguette.

Yelp
This is such a cute little spot! From the outside to the inside, it gives, take a picture here! I had a coffee with hazel nut (and whatever else the lady decided to put in my coffee). It was not overbearingly sweet like how I generally fix my coffee lol but still very satisfying for my sugary coffee cravings. I also sampled my friend's croissant which was fresh/crisp and deliciously paired with almond nuts and some sort of filling that I can't recall. Customer service was exceptional here. I will say this a must visit!
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Best almond croissant in town! The vanilla latte was perfect as well. The vibe and decor is very posh/chill. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Krystal L.

Yelp
I love how cute this bakery is! The bakery is well decorated with a selection of sweets and sandwiches. I got the pain au chocolat, brioche, and strawberry tart. I also got the vanilla latte. Their coffee was delicious and paired well with the pastries! I definitely recommend getting coffee there. Their pastries were all very good, and I cannot wait to come back and try more. You can definitely see that it is a small and family-owned. The place is on the quaint, and the service was a little slow, which was understandable, as the staff was on the smaller side. Asides from that, everything was great. I brought my homesick French friend here, and he also really liked it and ended up having a conversation with the chef LOL Overall, my friends and I all really liked the place and hope anyone who goes here will, too!

Yelp
This is my family's go-to bakery for bread, pastries, and birthday desserts! Everything tastes fresh and we have never been disappointed by the array of flavors found in all of the beautiful desserts. Only inconvenience is that it is a bit hard to find parking!
