Madras Dosa Co. - Review - Times Square - New York - The Infatuation

"Boston-based South Indian chain Madras Dosa Co. has their first NYC location in Times Square. They have a number of vegetarian and non-vegetarian fillings from their dosas, as well as several idli variations, and more snacky foods and pulaos. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Will Hartman

Madras Dosa Co. in Times Square offers an exceptional South Indian dining experience, blending authenticity with a warm, inviting ambiance. The moment you step in, the friendly staff welcomes you with a smile, setting the tone for an enjoyable meal. The seating arrangement, particularly by the large window overlooking the bustling streets of New York, adds a unique charm, allowing diners to savor their meal while watching the city’s vibrant energy unfold. The menu features an impressive selection of South Indian classics, from crispy dosas and soft idlis to flavorful vadas and uttapams, ensuring that both first-time visitors and seasoned South Indian cuisine lovers find something to enjoy. Among the standout dishes, the Pav Bhaji deserves special mention. The bhaji was perfectly spiced, with a rich, buttery texture that paired beautifully with the soft, toasted pav. The balance of tangy, savory, and slightly sweet flavors made each bite truly delightful. The Karam Neyi Dosa was another highlight, complemented by a flavorful palli chutney, aromatic sambar, and a sweet chutney that added depth to every bite. Each element of the meal was carefully prepared, showcasing the attention to detail and authenticity that defines Madras Dosa Co. Whether you’re craving a nostalgic taste of home or exploring South Indian flavors for the first time, this spot delivers an experience that is both satisfying and memorable.

April 5, 2025 -- We accidentally stumbled upon this place on our way from 7th Ave to Bryant Park, and instinctively entered it to a very welcoming aroma of warm South Indian tiffin. We got to know it's newly opened. The food tastes very close to what one would get in a normal restaurant in and around Chennai. We ate the following: 1. Plain dosa : It was crispy, wish it was thicker. The accompanying sambar is very tasty and authentic. All the chutneys (coconut, ginger, and for additional $2, peanut) were delicious. 2. Idly : As the dosa wasn't enough, I had their hot fluffy idly, which was much more filling. 3. Vada Pav: Took a bite of it, didn't form much of an opinion about it, felt normal. The prices are (may be 10% more than) reasonable, service is good, a very nice place to eat around Times Square.

Wanted to have masala dosa badly and found this place close to the hotel we staying at. The place is new and very clean. Staff is friendly. Limited seating but service is fast. Made fresh. We got masala dosa, pav bhaji and pani puri with filter coffee. All were sooo good. Good spice level. The kids enjoyed it as well. Definitely recommend this place to anyone.

What works: fresh interiors, easy ordering, clean place, and ultra quick service. What doesn't work: the way food is served. Probably works really well as a to-go service, in which case, it's a 4 star. But to sit down, pay $15 for a masala dosa, and not get sambar, and chutney's in a steel plate takes away that authenticity from a "South Indian" restaurant. Yeah I am sure poeple will say it's not just South Indian food, but the name of the place wants you to stick to that cuisine. Ordered Vada ($12), which was okay-ish and couldn't really enjoy dipping it in my plastic container of sambar. The tamarind chutney was absolute banger though. Keema Pav ($16) lacked that masala kick to it, while the Pani Puri's ($12) did manage to hit the spot. Friendly staff, noise levels on the low end, and a reasonably priced menu will bring us again to try their Bombay snacks and Canteen sandwiches on our next visit for sure!

Ordered the regular idly (it comes with 3 idly and 3 chutneys), samosa chaat, and a Thumbs Up. Everything was fresh, delicious, and flavorful. I went during dinner time, so it was busy and there was always a line. Will definitely be back to try the dosas.

I stopped by hoping for a quick bite, but this is not your typical fast food joint. The dosas here take time, and they’re not shy on price—expect to spend upwards of $18. That said, the experience is worth it. Watching the dosa being made fresh on the hot griddle is like a culinary performance, and the crowd—especially the number of Indian patrons—speaks to its authenticity. I had the lamb pesarattu dosa, beautifully packed in a sleek takeout box with three sauces. The dosa was crisp, flavorful, and deeply satisfying—worth every penny. The space is vibrant, with a leafy ceiling and Indian music videos playing on loop, giving it a warm, lively feel. If you’re in Times Square and craving real South Indian flavor, come hungry and be ready to wait a bit—it’s worth it.

It is a nice new spot in the area. Seating is limited. You can see them making the dosa, it looks and tastes fresh. Did try the pav bhaji dosa but preferred the simple plain and masala dosa over it. Their chaat options are good too. Both bhel and dahi puri were nice. Vadapav and samosa was average but good given the other options in the area. Overall a really nice spot and a pleasant visit always.

Consider savoring early memories such as sitting on the kitchen platform as your mother prepares your favorite supper for you. You now have an answer, though. See your favorite dishes being prepared in the live kitchen at Madras Dosa Company in the heart of Manhattan. MDC is a Southern Indian restaurant with a wide range of dishes to choose from. You can select your preferred fillings for dosa, pesarattu, and uttapam, ranging from vegetarian to plant-based to meat. We tried Pav Bhaji dosa, which was delicious and unusual. Additionally, check out their sandwiches, Idly-Vada, and Desi Chaat section. They made their initial engagement in Massachusetts before heading to Times Square. The restaurant serves meals quickly, is clean, has a pleasant atmosphere, and is adorable. Madras Dosa Company 1450 Broadway (Entrance on 41st St btwn Broadway, 6th Ave) New York, NY 10018

Yelp
Food tastes good and is made to order, but pretty pricey for what it is (1 dosa and 1 chaat came out to be 30 bucks). Dosa is good and hits the spot. You can't adjust spice level which can be problematic depending on your spicy tolerance. There is only paid bottled water on premises which is slightly odd for a spicy food place - so add that to the bill too. Not the best dosa in NYC (that would be the gunpowder dosa at Semma IMHO!) but it is the most convenient for midtown dwellers.

Yelp
Needs a lot of improvement. The dosas though crisp lacked flavor, were dry and tasted sour. The chutneys and sambhar - likewise. The food, service and ambience need improvement.

Yelp
Meh. I tried the traditional masala dosa (was a little dense) and chili cheese sandwich (honestly better than the dosa). Obviously you can get a better dosa at Dosa Delight or Temple Canteen or the guy in Washington square park, but it's Times Square so we'll take what we can get. I will say the sauces that came with the dosa were excellent. They also forgot my friend's order and it took forever to get our food. Not ideal when you're trying to quickly grab lunch on a work day. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Ordered: traditional masala dosa (spicy potatoes) + Order of 3 Idlys + Vada (savory rice&lentil donuts) + samosa chaat + paniyaram. Sambar was incredible as were all the other sauces and foods. Favorite was def. the dosa. Service was quick and friendly! Not a fan of the way they added the mango lassis to the bottom of the bag as some of one spilled out. Those should be in a separate to-go carrier. Great take-out experience otherwise, and super happy to have this fast casual South Indian spot nearby.

Yelp
SERVICE - located near Times Square in an unassuming location off of Broadway - limited indoor seating - order at the counter and then find a table if you wish to sit or else take your order to go - depending on your order food can be served quickly or take a bit of time - ambiance good for a casual meal - no water provided other than bottled for purchase MENU - customizable south indian fast casual food - vegetarian and vegan options available - average price ($15 per entree) FOOD - uttapam tacos with bhaji and podi (7/10): three thick uttapams filled with potato mixture and spicy podi with sides of sambar, ginger pickle, and coconut chutney. The bhaji and podi were add ons. I was skeptical about the bhaji since it is meant to be the side dish for pav bhaji. The taste was okay but the textures were too much of mush. If I got it again I would probably go for the spiced potato filling. The podi does pack a heat punch. The ginger pickle was both sweet and spicy which made a good dip for the uttapam. The sambar that I got tasted tangy almost like it was made the day before and left on the counter. WOULD I GO BACK? It was a good fast casual lunch spot if I was in the area and needed something quick

Yelp
Great food, good & quick service. Dida's are crispy, idly spongy and the dosa fillings are very creative. Place is new, clean and hygienic. It has become a staple for us.

Yelp
Ever feel like your prayers have been answered? Histrionics aside, when I - a native Mumbaikar - can FINALLY enjoy a meat-filled dosa.... y'all are just gonna have to let me have my moment. I did have my concerns that the taste authenticity would be sacrificed (at least somewhat) to allow this unusual (and by "unusual" I mean never-before-seen-or-heard-of) pairing to occur, but nope! Even the keema filling was authentic is taste. The dosa was purrrrrrfect - that texture, friends? Not easy to strike the perfect balance all the time but these guys nailed it. Anyway, I'm so glad I stumbled upon this no-frills casual (and niche) eatery! Been dreaming about it ever since but totally need other people to share that dosa with.

Yelp
We are finally living in the golden age of the thatte idli. I've been complaining for years that this is the idli in its ultimate form, and yet nowhere in the city would have it on their menu. Finally in 2025 there are plentiful restaurants serving it, including this new casual dosa spot near Times Square. Unfortunately, Madras Dosa's thatte idli was quite dry, and was probably my least favorite part of the meal. The masala dosa in comparison was quite nice and crispy - the sambar was great, the nariyal chutney was rather watery. (If I had just ordered the dosa, this review would have been 4 stars.) I would not recommend the chai - it was frothy and tasted like something from an espresso machine.

Yelp
It is pricy compared to dosa hut in Flushing. I tried the samosa. Not as good as Iditich. I had puri puri today. Doesn't taste as good as the food truck Fuska in Jackson Height, and I am paying at least 40% premium. The puri is more hard than crispy. The sauce taste pretty bland. It is like snack, not for lunch.

Yelp
Food is great, service is fast, ambiance is meh but you'd carry out anyways. 5/5 for tasty food! Gotta come back to try the other options.

Yelp
just disappointed.. what can I say. I paid $20 for this.. the spring mix and any other side items is a rip off.

Yelp
The entire evening here felt just right in every way. This place combines warmth with modern design elements. All workers here show impressive skills. The plates here come full of tasty food. I received wonderful attention from workers and plan to return.

Yelp
Walked by here and circled back when my first choice for lunch was too long of a wait. Went in, looked at the menu, and decided on the philly cheesesteak dosa. Wow. It was good, but the star of the lunch were the trio of sauces. I assume one of them was a sambar as it had similar flavors. The chutneys were fantastic. The darker one I assume was sweet tamarind chutney, and it was my favorite. Taking a star off for the cleanliness, as no one was wiping down tables. Customers were wiping them off themselves.

Yelp
Unfortunately gave me a really bad allergic reaction (I think it was the ginger chutney which was stale) I was excited about this place and found the food good, but I am never going back.

Yelp
What a hidden gem - we stumbled upon this place on our way back from a Broadway show and were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, ambience was nice, clean, hygienic, and perfect location when you're out and about and need a quick fix. We were also greeted by Dhruv, who owns this place, and he was politely checking in with everyone. Wishing him and his restaurant a great success!

Yelp
I was thrilled to discover this new branch in Chelsea - so good! Everything was delicious - l had the dosa with spiced mashed vegetables i side, as well as the masala lassi. Also everyone who worked there was so nice & very generous. I will definitely go back!
google avatar

Lakshmi K.

Yelp
Excellent addition to the neighborhood. I am surprised by the complaints around price and portion size - I got a chaat and the paneer sandwich both were very generous servings and cost about $14-15 each - the standard price for any lunch / take out meal in this area. Both were very flavorful and excellent for take out (packed well). Will be back!

Monisha M.

Yelp
Ordered Idli. The price has moved up from $10 to $13 rather quickly . Steaming hot , soft and still just as delicious . Wait time was negligible.
google avatar

Aarushi K.

Yelp
Pretty average food - the dosa wasn't authentic and the quantity is too little! Vada seemed to have been double fried. This place seems to be targeting tourists - quick service and limited options. Limited seating as well, not a place to hang out and grab a meal.
google avatar

Sai S.

Yelp
Visiting from out of state. Amazing service and good. Highly recommend! Also, so close to Times Square. No bathrooms/washing hands area. They have plastic ware so that's a plus!
google avatar

Mohan M.

Yelp
Very clean - unusual menu- tried the idlis and they were good - the masala dosa was mediocre and the dahi puri was unusual- it's okay

Sayali O.

Yelp
The idlis seemed stale and dosa was chewy, not something you would expect at that high price point. Very overpriced, seemed targeted towards the tourists, where consistency or quality wont matter too much

Terri M.

Yelp
Pricey. My friend ordered a dosa with samosa and some other fillings, but we don't think there was any samosa inside. I got the chicken pulao, but it was just ok. It says rice and veggies, but there aren't veggies in it - just a bit of raw onion. $5 chai was small but good and dark. Nice interior, well lit. We asked for cups of water, but they would only sell us bottled water even though there was a sink right behind the guy. I get that NYC water isn't the greatest, but we didn't want to pay for bottled water and add to the great pile of plastic garbage on the earth. Maybe it's good if you love dosas, but personally, I wouldn't go there again.

Yelp
Very kind service. Delicious dosa, the quality of ingredients was obvious, amazing flavors, wonderful spices. I loved it. Fast and casual spot, perfect for work lunch. Fresh young coconut major plus!
