"Although Magpie bills itself as a warm gathering spot for locals and travelers alike, its substantive menu of small plates — featuring items like a $2.50 anchovy toastette to a heftier $26 duck confit and pancake dish — also makes it an excellent candidate for a solo date or “treat yourself” location. Owned by Sacramento natives Janel Inouye and Matt Roehr, Magpie pays tribute both to their hometown and the Central Valley, where they were regularly inspired by abundant Santa Cruz farmers markets. Their intentionality is clear throughout the space, from the ambiance generated by the warmth of its guests to the seasonally rotating menu — so if those small plates melt into dinner and you find yourself facing a plate of lamb chops and glass of pinot noir, so be it." - Tamerra Griffin

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Magpie in downtown Sac, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish! The highlight of my meal was the perfectly cooked chicken. It was tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection, making every bite a true delight. Accompanied by seasonal vegetables, each ingredient was fresh and vibrant, showcasing the best of what the season has to offer. The combination of flavors was beautifully balanced, creating a dish that was both satisfying and delicious 😋 To complement my meal, I ordered a Lemon Drop beverage, and it did not disappoint! It was incredibly refreshing and added a delightful twist to my dining experience. Overall, my time at Magpie was remarkable. I left feeling completely satisfied and eager to return. Whether you're looking for a casual dinner or a special night out, this restaurant will not disappoint.

Went out for a dinner date without a plan. Showed up 30 mins before closing and asked if they would still serve us. Generously, they said of course. We ordered our food right away to help the kitchen, but the staff didn't rush us at all. A bottle of crémant + 4 small plates was perfect to share. Pork belly with sticky candy sauce and frizee apple salad was the star of the show. First time outside of Asia that I had perfectly-cooked pork belly: the fatty bits were liquid hot and made the meat crisp outside and juicy inside. Veggie tempura was a generous portion of crunchy green onion, chile guero and asparagus. We also had lamb meatballs and one arancine. We moved to the bar and they let us stay pretty late talking over our bottle. Thanks to everyone's gracious attitude it was a lovely evening. Impressed with the service.

There were so many delicious sounding options on the menu. Everyone in our party of five found it difficult to decide. We will definitely be back.

Husband, adult daughter and I came here for my birthday dinner. We were not disappointed. We started out with the panko fried asparagus and were thrilled with it. Local "grass" with a marvelous sauce. We were all delighted with our entrees, which included the pork chop, the greens pasta, and the trout, which was actually almost like salmon. Short but excellent wine list. Chocolate avocado mousse topped it off to our satisfaction. Our waiter was delightful. The space is a bit noisy, but it seemed that all customers were enjoying themselves. Recommended.

A perfect spot for treating yourself to a delicious and fancy meal! It's a bit pricy but for a good reason. I had the Sauteed Jimmy Nardello peppers and the Home Made Pasta with Crispy Pork Belly and was happy with both. The peppers were sweet, had a good sear, and were topped with a flavorful (but not overpowering) garlic sauce. The Pasta had a lot going on, but had a good cohesive flavor. Maybe my one small criticism is that there's too few pork pieces for its flavor to be noticeable. It gets drowned out by the sauce, which is creamy and delicious don't get me wrong, but a little more pork would've been nice. The interior is cozy and has a warm atmosphere! The patio also looks nice but it was a bit too warm in the afternoon. Would love to come back and try their other dishes

Came here for a Mother's Day lunch and I really liked it here. I was delighted to see a BLT sandwich on the menu, and it did not disappoint. I also had french fries, which were superb. My waiter was great, sitting outside was very pleasant (albeit for the dust and occasional gusts of wind). Easy 10/10 restaurant

Wonderful location on 16th ave in Sacramento. Across from a park and the neighborhood is very lively. The restaurant is adorable with a lovely outdoor seating area. We had crab salad with grapefruit. It was fresh and delicious. The BLT…oh my! So so good. They used sundried tomatoes and a caper/mayonnaise. The bread was delicious. The sandwich…just wow!!! Definitely recommend. We started with their hummus…which was garlicky and delicious and had a custard and the carrot cake cookie for dessert. Everything was really really good. Our waitress was fantastic!! What a wonderful dining experience. We will be back for sure!! Thankyou!!

This has been our favorite restaurant for years. I’ve sent countless of people, both locals and visitors, to Magpie. Couldn’t recommend it enough. Half of our party was late tonight and despite specific requests to sit and start our meal (we were on time) the hostess (older Asian woman) said “I prefer to sit everyone together” So despite making a reservation and showing up on time…. We waited 35 minutes to be seated and start our dinner. I was so hungry I was almost in tears. I was going to walk out but since our dinner included another couple, it was more complicated. Instead, we sat by the host table and stared at many EMPTY dinner tables that we *could* have sat at. Watching everyone enjoy dinner. The only time I’ve encountered a host asking us to wait for someone was based on the fact that it was a Michelin star experience (net, performance!) to which was very important to be in-sync. Magpie is not that. The waitress would have had to repeat the two specials, had they let us start before the other couple. I hardly find that worth the risk. Since they didn’t want my money for 35 minutes, again, despite us requesting to start, I will never spend my money here again. Shame that the service is horrific, because the food is great. The chefs deserve more than that service.
