The Best Restaurants in Sacramento, Roseville, and Elk Grove | Eater SF

"Although Magpie bills itself as a warm gathering spot for locals and travelers alike, its substantive menu of small plates — featuring items like a $2.50 anchovy toastette to a heftier $26 duck confit and pancake dish — also makes it an excellent candidate for a solo date or “treat yourself” location. Owned by Sacramento natives Janel Inouye and Ed Roehr, Magpie pays tribute both to their hometown and the Central Valley, where they were regularly inspired by abundant Santa Cruz farmers markets. Their intentionality is clear throughout the space, from the ambiance generated by the warmth of its guests to the seasonally rotating menu — so if those small plates melt into dinner and you find yourself facing a plate of lamb chops and glass of pinot noir, so be it." - Tamerra Griffin

We’ve been to Magpie many times, but this was our first time skipping the Chicken for Sharing (which is always delicious). Instead, we tried the Dine Downtown menu and found it to be a great deal. We both really enjoyed the salad course and the bread with hummus. I had the gnocchi with duck confit while my partner had the steelhead, and both were fantastic. The smaller portion of avocado chocolate mousse was the perfect finishing touch. As always, thank you Magpie!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Magpie in downtown Sac, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish! The highlight of my meal was the perfectly cooked chicken. It was tender, juicy, and seasoned to perfection, making every bite a true delight. Accompanied by seasonal vegetables, each ingredient was fresh and vibrant, showcasing the best of what the season has to offer. The combination of flavors was beautifully balanced, creating a dish that was both satisfying and delicious 😋 To complement my meal, I ordered a Lemon Drop beverage, and it did not disappoint! It was incredibly refreshing and added a delightful twist to my dining experience. Overall, my time at Magpie was remarkable. I left feeling completely satisfied and eager to return. Whether you're looking for a casual dinner or a special night out, this restaurant will not disappoint.

Google
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Sacramento. Everyone is always so kind, service is top notch, food and drinks are DELICIOUS. The flavor combinations are always unique and seasonal. I think it’s the best quality to price ratio in Sacramento. My partner and I go pretty often and they make us feel like part of the family. I would especially like to shoutout Tyrone, who always makes the most delicious drinks, even when I ask for all my kooky prohibition-era favorites. But truly, everyone who works at Magpie is so wonderful. I highly recommend their beet salad, burger, BLT, duck skin toast (when they have it), miso radishes, and honestly any special they have is always 10/10 (they had this insane banh mi/yorkshire pudding mashup that was life changing). Check it out if you somehow haven’t been!

Went out for a dinner date without a plan. Showed up 30 mins before closing and asked if they would still serve us. Generously, they said of course. We ordered our food right away to help the kitchen, but the staff didn't rush us at all. A bottle of crémant + 4 small plates was perfect to share. Pork belly with sticky candy sauce and frizee apple salad was the star of the show. First time outside of Asia that I had perfectly-cooked pork belly: the fatty bits were liquid hot and made the meat crisp outside and juicy inside. Veggie tempura was a generous portion of crunchy green onion, chile guero and asparagus. We also had lamb meatballs and one arancine. We moved to the bar and they let us stay pretty late talking over our bottle. Thanks to everyone's gracious attitude it was a lovely evening. Impressed with the service.

Google
Magpie has quickly become one of my go-to spots in Sacramento. It’s the perfect mix of casual charm and fine dining quality. The food always feels thoughtful and fresh - you can tell they care deeply about sourcing local ingredients. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich on my last visit, and it was out of this world: crispy, juicy, and full of flavor, paired with sides that were just as memorable. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere felt relaxed but still polished. It’s the kind of place that works equally well for a casual lunch or a special dinner. Sacramento wouldn’t be the same without Magpie.

Google
Lovely spot in Sacramento with delicious appetizers and creative gastronomic delights! We were visiting family and stopped for lunch...the beet salad and prawn appetizers were fabulous. BLT on foccacia was excellent. Highly recommend!

Google
I was headed to a concert and decided to try Magpie at the recommendation of a friend. To start we were greeted immediately and sat right away before hearing the voice of an Angel, our waiter Tyrone. Tyrone had a passion for his work and provided service that is rare in today's restaurant scene. He made my wife and I feel like part of the family and dealt out some fantastic recommendations. We had the aranchini which were fuego! Crispy outside, creamy interior flavored with saffron, wow. Wifey and I shared the chicken for sharing and this was no regular chicken. We devoured every last piece of meat and could have swam in the leftover sauce. If you get the chance to go you won't regret it! Ask for Tyrone if you want the best service in Sacramento!

Google
Very Creative Cuisine though lacking in Flavor 3.5 / 5 Fried Onions were the best thing we ate. Followed by Ice cream sandwich & Fries... The Chicken though very juicy was lacking in Flavor an easy fix for a talented culinary team.

Yelp
Go!!! Eat! Drink! And you'll be SO glad you went! We arrived at 9:10 PM and were told they were serving the late menu - I was extremely disappointed. I wanted to try the potatoes and leeks and the schnitzel. Neither were being served at that time, so I ordered the hamburger. Our very pleasant, attentive, and engaged wait staff presented water, our drink orders, appetizer, and our main meals promptly. Knowing my penchant to drop food onto my shirt, I held onto the outer wrapper for dear life and took a bite, and, as they say, the rest is history. After several gob-fulls, I sat across from my daughter and proclaimed, "I don't think I've ever said this in my life, but I think this is the BEST hamburger I've ever had!" I LIKE hamburgers and growing up in San Francisco and living in the Bay Area for over 35 years, I had some great hamburgers. However, the quality of this beef, perfectly seasoned and grilled, the caramelized onions, not overcooked, stringy or slimy, but translucent brown, melding into the bite, the accentuating secret sauce, the smoothly melted, sharp, tangy, and creamy flavored Sierra Nevada organic white cheddar, the toasted and substantive but not overwhelming Acme challah bun (a LIFE changer in the culinary world of hamburger) were all elevated by ....wait for it...pickles! Not store bought, overly vinegary, bendy pickles, but thick, crisp, perfectly pickled cucumber - the BEST bread and butter pickles EVER (which I would buy a large jar of if I could!) All of this created a symphony of taste and texture that I WILL return for. DO NOT MISS this crackerjack curation of craved cow and creative condiments if you are a fan. Oh, and don't forget the side. They write one word: Fries. One word to another: Fantastic!

Yelp
Happy to have finally stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. While we made a reservation, there were still plenty of tables available. I would recommend a dinner reservation as the closer we got to dinner, the more people came in. The appetizer and meal both were delicious and full of fresh ingredients. The artichoke dip was more than enough for 2 adults and a kid, though they were very kind to bring out more bread for us. The gnocchi was cooked to perfection, and the whole meal left me feeling full but with room still for more.

Yelp
We ordered several starters and mains for the table to taste everything. Radish with miso butter Cauliflower fritters Farm salad Pork belly Mary's chicken Gnocchi Flank steak And everything was exceptional and so fresh and perfectly cooked Will definitely be coming back to magpie

Yelp
Last time I was at Magpie Cafe was at their previous location. We visited this time during lunch. Restaurant wasn't too busy. Ordered a small plate, salad, and large plate for sharing. The pork schnitzel was very good. Creamy mashed potatoes. Apple sauce and cabbage were great accompaniments. Really loved the freshness of the food. Saw crates of fresh vegetables brought in the side of the restaurant. I appreciate living in a place where we have access to year round fresh produce. Service was just ok today.

Yelp
My sister took me here for lunch on a Friday afternoon & I loved the food. She took me to the original location a few years ago but this was my first time at this location. It wasn't too busy. For starters, we ordered the STEELHEAD TROUT DIP -Herbs, crispy skin, roe, house potato chips. Loved the creaminess of this dip with the perfect amount of trout in each bite. Loved the roe & wish there were more but great dip to share. We also tried the ALL THE FALL THINGS salad, a local hearty greens, fruits & roots. Loved the pickled beets & onion, & the pistachio yogurt was delicious. We also tried the CHICKEN FOR SHARING-Mary's chicken pan roasted with white wine cream sauce. It includes a generous vegetable plate. The cream sauce was so tasty & loved all the veggies especially the mushrooms. I didn't try the PT RANCH PORK SCHNITZEL but I did try the mash potatoes & apple sauce & mustard seed it came with & loved it. Staff were ok. Our server was a bit slow & food took awhile. There's street parking. Overall still had a great experience.

Yelp
Such good food at this place. Their bar is excellent too with a good selection of cocktails and wine. A Sacramento classic.

Yelp
DINNER REVIEW: Stopped into Magpie on a Tuesday night around 7:30 PM for dinner. Magpie has been on my list of places I wanted to check out for a while so this was really exciting for me. I appreciate farm-to-table/local farmer restaurants and dining. I ordered: * Farmer Fritto * Crudo (scallop) * Western Lamb Chops The farmers fritto was 4/5. Texture of the fried batter was incredible and the vegetables remained al dente. What I didn't love was the sweet mayonnaise type of sauce served with this dish and the fried bell pepper...it's a weird vegetable to batter and fry because of its water content. I enjoyed the string beans, artichoke, carrot, and zucchini. Everything tasted fresh and I would order again. The scallop crudo was delicious. Although it probably deserves a five, I give it a 4/5 because when it arrived to my table I could not help but notice the strong scent of raw fish/seafood. The fresh pluots and cilantro added a lovely brightness to the dish, as well as a subtle contrast of sweet to savory/salty. I loved, conceptionally, the teeny dollops of pluot sorbet but I struggled to decide if it did anything for the dish other than add lovely pop of color and more sweetness. If you love seafood and scallops, it's definitely worth the try. Finally, I settled on the lamb chops. It took me a few bites to settle into the dish and decide...4/5 is where I'm landing. The dish seemed middle eastern inspired, pulling together baba ganoush, summer squash, cherry tomato, pickles, fresh herbs and sumac yogurt. Instead of the roasted eggplant flavor that I was excited for, it was giving more "hummus" than baba ganoush. Yummy still. Cherry tomatoes were excellent and I'm not even a huge tomato person. The vegetables again were al dente and the pickles were a nice touch. What made this dish for instead of a five for me was the glob of sumac yogurt that was dumped on top of one of the two lamb chops. The yogurt was cold and I would have preferred a little off to the sides. The restaurant is dimly lit, and I loved the music selection. The music was not loud, but at the right volume to where you could hear it, but still enjoy conversation with others. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I would return to magpie and it is somewhere I would recommend for those who appreciate local menus.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and the food is TASTY! My neighbor introduced me to Magpie and so happy she did so

Yelp
Magpie Cafe in Midtown Sacramento has become one of our regular go‑to spots for dinner, and it earns an easy five stars every time. Located on 16th Street in the 16 Powerhouse building, it's right in the heart of downtown/midtown's dining scene and convenient whether you're coming from East Sac, Land Park, or out of town. What keeps us coming back is how consistently fresh and seasonal the food is. The menu changes with the local produce, but whatever is on offer--whether it is a standout burger, creative small plates, or a beautifully composed salad--comes out balanced, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Portions are generous without being heavy, and there is always at least one dish that feels like a new Sacramento favorite. Service at Magpie Cafe is warm, professional, and genuinely hospitable. Staff are happy to walk through the menu, offer pairing suggestions from the bar, and pace the meal so it feels relaxed rather than rushed. The cozy, modern dining room and patio seating make it a great choice for date night, casual dinners with friends, or showing off Sacramento's farm‑to‑fork scene to visitors. The bar program is another strength, with balanced cocktails, thoughtful non‑alcoholic options, and drinks that highlight the same seasonal approach as the kitchen. Whether stopping in for a full dinner or just small plates and drinks, Magpie Cafe continues to be one of the best restaurants in Sacramento and a must‑visit in Midtown for anyone who appreciates local, seasonal cooking done right.

Yelp
Farm-to-table restaurant with a ton of small plate options, a few larger entree options, and a solid cocktail menu Indoor, outdoor, and bar seating I came here for dinner with my fiance and we tried a variety of the small plates (and I got a cocktail as well). The cocktail was great, and most of the small plates were solid

Yelp
This place has been long on our list to try. The space inside is small and cozy. The tables are really close to each other, can feel a little stuffy at times. The food options are spectacular. The beef tartare was delicious, a must try! The pork chop was the least dry chop I've had in a while, very well seasoned and the fruits add a delicious sweet touch. The polenta photographed, was soak in oil. Not sure if it's because it has been sitting there but the taste wasn't bad. My husband had the lamb chop and no complaints there either. The bill for a bunch of apps and four entrees, and 3 drinks came out to 300 bucks. Not a cheap dinner option if you're looking for one but you get a good amount of food for what you're paying. Will definitely return!

Yelp
Magpie Cafe had me at avocado. Perched on a beautifully lit corner, this little gem offers an intimate dining experience that feels both relaxed and refined. Ambience: Magpie has that perfect low-lit glow that makes every table feel special. The space is cozy without being cramped. The tables are thoughtfully spaced so you can slip by with ease but still enjoy that quiet, close-to-your-date vibe. Each wooden table is dressed with a petite floral arrangement and a soft table light, adding to the charm. There's a mix of booths and chairs, and for those who prefer a bit of fresh air, outdoor seating lets you soak in the street-side energy. Food: The seasonal menu is full of adventurous options that make it hard to choose. I went with the avocado salmon toast, which was a beautiful balance of hearty and fresh. The bread was substantial, the avocado creamy and flavorful, but I do wish there had been a touch more salmon given its in the name. For dessert, I couldn't resist the chocolate avocado mousse (because, well, avocado everything). It was decadent, rich, and definitely meant to be shared. What truly earned Magpie Cafe its five stars was the exceptional service and inviting atmosphere. The staff were attentive without hovering, and everything about the experience felt intentional. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu.

Yelp
The food here is so so good and different! My mom and I split the bay shrimp & avocado salad and the BLT. Both were delicious! The salad was huge and had amazing flavors and the blt was on really yummy bread and was really tasty. All of the employees are very friendly! The inside isn't anything special but the food is worth it
google avatar

Mirba E.

Yelp
Food was excellent, service was great. Had a leisurely lunch here and everything was great. The pork belly wasn't as crispy and the glaze really stuck to my teeth but that didn't stop me from enjoying all the flavors. Lovely place for a meal.

Yelp
Such a beautiful dining experience can be had at Magpie. Stopped by on a Wednesday evening and was able to get seated right away. The staff that was serving us was very knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. Everything on the menu is fresh and locally sourced. We tried the pork belly, bread and hummus, seasonal Nantes carrots, strozzapretti, and anchovy toastettes. My favorite dishes were the pork belly and bread and hummus. Everything was cleverly plated and flavorfully thoughtful. These dishes will definitely give you a unique experience. The restaurant itself is small but efficient and beautiful. There are big windows, an open bar, and a romantic vibe. I will definitely visit again to try more of their seasonal dishes!
google avatar

Yelp
We went with 3 well-behaved kids and 4 adults, and all of us had a great time enjoying their delicious food. Every ingredient was incredibly fresh, and every dish we tried was outstanding. Their menu is extensive, and we ordered 7 or 8 different dishes all fantastic! It's no surprise the place was already packed at 5:00 p.m. on a Saturday. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Catrina R.

Yelp
Stopped by on the way to the airport do we were kinda rushed but man this place delivered. We sat at the bar and ordered the meatballs and the hummus and bread. Very quick and friendly service and although both were good dishes MAN those meatballs were top tier. The sauce they were in was *chef kiss.* Next time we are in town we will definitely stop by for a full fledged meal. PS looks like they have music there too! It's right across from a park that had plenty of street paid parking.

Yelp
Our office held our annual holiday lunch here this year. I was unsure what to expect from a place named, "Cafe" but was throughly impressed. From table set-up for ~ 30, to the service that was attentive and on point, to perfect portions with great flavor profiles, it was a great experience. The housemade honey-infused lemonade was great! Fries didn't need salt or dipping sauces (note: I overheard they don't have ranch dressing). And they cooked my steak exactly as ordered. Fantastic they had the right amount of staff to get us lunch - preselected appetizers & salad, choice from 3 entrees, and preselected dessert bites - in about 2 hours. Ambiance is classy casual but could welcome under or overdressed, too. I never enjoy parking downtown - cost and hassle - so I rarely go. It was a mid-week lunch and I found a metered spot about 12 car spaces away - just shy of O Street. I love exploring new eateries but if someone wanted us to dine at Magpie Cafe, I would definitely return. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I think it's safe to say that Magpie Cafe is one of my absolute favorite restaurants. The food is extremely fresh, and the menu rotates to show off what is in season. We live about 40 minutes away, and drive over just for Magpie. The service has always been great, and we enjoy sitting in the cozy back corner.

Yelp
Came here for Valentine's dinner with my date. We made a reservation for 5:30. Once we arrived, we were greeted and seated right away. They had a Valentine's Day menu. Our server Michael was awesome. He answered all my questions and was very attentive. We ordered the lamb chops and chicken chanterelle. The chicken was super tender. Veggies were cooked perfectly. All the flavors were on point. My date enjoyed his dish. Had an amazing experience here.

Yelp
Food , vibes, and service is all great here. Highly recommend getting multiple small plates to share and be able to try more dishes as the variety of flavors and cuisines are so diverse and taste great! I loved the panzanella salad and will definitely be getting it again next time I come here. Perfect spot for lunch / happy hour . Pet friendly on the patio

Yelp
Wow! Magpie was an amazing experience! We were looking for a farm to table restaurant and they had a fantastic menu. I had the Niman Ranch Pork Chop.and it was tender and delicious. The vegetables are procured from local farmers and we had a wonderful dish with a medley of broccoli, beets, turnips, mushrooms and pumpkins. We also ordered the Roasted Organic Nantes Carrots which were tasty. Our server was friendly and provided great customer service. The restaurant had an open kitchen and I like seeing the chefs preparing the dishes. The bar was cool with the selection on libations intertwined with books on a shelf. We look forward to returning to try more dishes:)

Yelp
I was a little apprehensive when I saw the prices, but although Magpie is definitely on the expensive side, I can confirm it's still worth a visit. We accidentally stumbled in on a week where they were running a three course special, so we let that guide our choices. I had the toasted quinoa and greens salad, which was wonderfully nutty with a tart finish from the vinegrette. It also came with a side of fluffy, just-toasted bread and hummus, both of which were delicious. The main course was salmon with potatoes, carrots, and a light sauce. They crisped the salmon skin PERFECTLY, and the fish itself was still moist and flaky. Fried squash was the side I chose, and it was sweet with a light tempura batter - so good. The only let down was the dessert. I got the lemon curd, which was unpleasantly grainy although the flavor was nice. The ambiance is great too, moody with some candle-esque lighting. Our waiter was polite and helpful, and the food was brought out pretty quickly after the orders went in. I'd definitely return for a date night some time!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
I honestly don't know what other amazing praise I can give Magpie. Consistently innovative food that I wouldn't be able to make up if I tried. Eating here is so incredibly pleasurable. Everything from service, ambiance, cocktails and food takes you to your happy place. Great way today for my wife and I to celebrate TGIF!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been wanting to check out Magpie for quite some time. I'm glad I did! We started with the Arincine and chips with onion dip. They were both quite tasty and came out quickly. We also tried the lemon bomb, their summer mojito. It was a refreshing summer cocktail. We ordered the shrimp, avocado and grapefruit salad and the gnocchi. The salad was just ok. I like my greens cut up more than these were. The avocado was not so much slices as an avocado mush. The salad had a yummy grapefruit vinaigrette but the salad was so overdressed. I will say the grapefruit was very fresh. The gnocchi was fresh and hot and pillow-y. It is tight quarters inside. Not a place to go if you want a quiet dinner. The staff were friendly and attentive and the service was speedy.

Yelp
I love this place!! The restaurant is cozy, low lighting. Staff are so friendly and thoughtful. Solid 4.5/5. I also love that they have rotating menus. Quality of food is superb. They also rotate cocktails which is MUCH appreciated! They also highlight a couple of cocktails that they can make as mock tails. Only half star off because prices are a bit high for amount and value of food and I believe they charge the same amount for the mocktail as they do for the cocktail (I could be wrong- I'd have to look back on my receipt) but I do appreciate establishments that knock a few bucks off for mock tails. Overall highly recommend for date night, intimate girls night, groups up to 5-7.

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had in a while! Cute atmosphere, great service, interesting flavors. And inventive cocktails! My favorites in order: Anchovy toast Lamb meatballs Arancine (tasted exactly like paella) Steelhead trout Brussels sprouts Delicata squash The bill was super reasonable, too. I would love to come back!
google avatar

Steph L.

Yelp
Celebrated a birthday here. Parking was slightly challenging but doable. The restaurant was so cute and the waiter was attentive. I was blown away by how fresh the produce was! You could really taste the quality in their ingredients. Even their salad they used seasonal peaches with a light vinaigrette and the greens were tender but crispy & topped with crispy quinoa. The beef tartare was diced and marinated with a variety of spices and vegetables with some horseradish shavings for garnish. Their pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was creamy but not too heavy with a good balance of savory and hints of tomatoes. The aracino was piping hot and the garlic aioli was superb. The pork belly melted in my mouth and the peaches were a good complement to the dish.

Yelp
We came to Magpie to have dinner with our daughter and Eater mentioned that this was one of their The 25 Best Sacramento Restaurants https://sf.eater.com/maps/best-restaurants-sacramento. Sadly, most of these were closed on Sunday but we did find Maydoon and Magpie open. DH for some reason did not like the minimalist look of Maydoon so Magpie it was. DD had the pork chop, which was very very good. I had the Endive Salad with arugula, Point Reyes blue cheese, pears, almond sesame crunch, red wine vinaigrette. Always the cheese on the side if you don't know the restaurant because substandard restaurants always use too much. The salad was delicious and I loved the crunchies. I also ordered the tartar. Only slight ding is that it was a bit lacking in salt, both within the tartar and on top. And when I requested salt, I was given a salt shaker and not a little dish with flaky salt. Silly me, I should have asked for that but was kind of surprised when the shaker came. I thought that salt shakers had been banished from fine eating establishments. DH had the BLT, which he can never resist. It came as sort of a hotdog looking affair, which confused him, but judging on how quickly it disappeared, I believe he was more than satisfied. A little spendy for a neighborhood eat but I guess I'd do cocktails and bites here if I was a local. The vibe is comfortable and understatedly nice. The wine list was well curated. Salt aside, service was terrific and we had a great time.

Yelp
I am obsessed with Magpie. It's one of my favorite go-to restaurants in Sacramento. The menu changes with the seasons bc they use the freshest locally sourced meats and vegetables which is why their food is always delicious. It's all about the ingredients. Perfect spot for casual lunch, dinner/drinks with friends or date nights. It's a lively place that can be busy at times so may have to wait a bit but I've never had an issue and I am here regularly. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating They also have a full bar with wine, local beers and excellent cocktails. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My latest favorite item is the veggie hummus bowl. It was so satisfying that after I finished I couldn't wait to come back to get it again (and I did a few days later). It didn't sound like much on the menu but I'm so happy I tried it. Every bite was like a party in my mouth. The textures - creamy hummus, perfectly prepared crisp veggies, soft forbidden rice and crunchy beet chips. One time I added avocado another time an egg. Next time I'll add both just bc why not?! There is something on the menu for everyone - sandwiches, a burger with fries, amazing salads (like the stone fruit salad), plates featuring local meats and veggies and fresh pasta dishes. Hands down one of the best places in Sacramento!

Yelp
Brought a family group in today for lunch, with several out of town guests. Fabulous as always! Consistently one of Sacramento's best restaurants. From the Steak Tartar to the Trout dip to the Anchovy Toastettes to the Lamb chops, +++, everything was amazing. My sister loved the Strawberry Mint Fizz. Great food, exceptional service, and a lovely setting.

Yelp
Kind, attentive staff and delicious fresh food! Our family of four ordered a bunch of small plates and shared. Many dishes were vegetarian/vegan friendly. My favorite was the onion dip that came with the potato chips. Never had I tasted dip so fresh! The fried risotto balls were hot and crispy on the outside and smoky soft on the inside. Freshly fried vegetables were plentiful for all of us to share. Pork belly was nice and crispy. Forest mushrooms in white bean dip was also good along with toasted bread. See pictures!

Yelp

Yelp
The steak was absolutely delicious! Gnocchi was good but I prefer the steak choice over it. Overall the atmosphere was very nice and service was great. The arancini was interesting - not a traditional method and was served with an aioli rather than a marinara. Overall would go back though!

Yelp
I can easily say that I'd reorder everything I had during my visit. For the table, we shared the fried broccolini and yams as well as the hummus and fresh baked bread. We all fought for the last pieces of both! The veggies specifically had a black sesame sauce and it brought some fun and fresh flavor to the dish. I enjoyed the cheeseburger. My favorite part was the jammy roasted tomato that they put on the burger instead of a standard sliced tomato. We also shared the avocado and chocolate mousse for dessert. I would say it was more of a ganache, but so great! Overall, I'm happy we tried them out and wish I had something like this restaurant closer to home.

Yelp
Magpie Cafe never disappoints! We had the anchovy toastette appetizer (order one each, they're small), and then my wife had the black cod and I had the flat iron steak. Both were very good, but the steak really was notable (lean, tender, cooked to order with a great savory sauce). The place was slammed on a Saturday night, so that might explain why our waiter was, well, a bit aloof/rushed/impersonal, and we don't think that's a deal-breaker...

Yelp
Husband and I were in Sac on Labor Day weekend looking for a nice farm to table restaurant with creative vegetarian options. Very fortunately we found Magpie Cafe. All the dishes were delicious - but the roasted Jimmy Nardello peppers were the tops: fruity, citrusy front notes with just a little backend heat and a velvety texture. We liked them so much that we sought them out a couple of weeks later at the Saturday SF Ferry Building Farmers Market.

Yelp
Our group had an early dinner here, sitting down to dine immediately to an almost empty dining room. We ordered several appetizers and several entrees which we all planned to share. Overall, our food was good but service was somewhat spotty. The wine ordered was also good. We all enjoyed the quality food and innovative menu.

Yelp
Very beautiful restaurant with farm to table dishes. We had the filet, chicken, and vegetables with the chips and crudo appetizers. Food was beyond flavorful. The best chicken we have ever had. Seasonal roasted vegetables were prepared to perfection. The filet left me wanting more. Food was in line with the economy but worth every penny. I was told that their menu changes often. I can't wait to come back and see a different menu every time.

Yelp
Haven't been in a long time so happy to meet my friend for dinner last night. The atmosphere is always so cozy and classy without feeling uptight. Staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. When someone asks what is the quintessential restaurant that describes Sacramento, I say Magpie Cafe. It's farm to fork, it's local, it's seasonal, sustainable, uses thoughtful and high quality ingredients, and it's creative. The menu rotates and I'm always excited to see what's on it. I got their Duck Confit w/ cabbage pancake and it was nothing what expected. It reminded me of a German potato pancake. The duck was delicious and paired well with the cabbage pancake and Fuji apple slices. But the highlight of the night was the anchovy toast appetizer which is seriously two bites of heaven. I could eat 10 of them! Overall it was a wonderful evening and will be back very soon!

Yelp
Magpie Cafe is located on 16th & P street. It is the cutest cafe for any lunch date. I visited on a Sunday for a late lunch/early dinner with my boyfriend. The price range for many items is $25-45. Some items were more pricey than expected but the ingredients are also great quality and very fresh. They bring all the freshest ingredients to your dinner table. What we ordered: * The Steelhead trout($36); it had such great crisp skin. I typically do not like to eat the skin of any fish but this one was different. I ate it all! It was cooked to perfection and perfectly paired with potatoes. Next time I order this I will probably order the sauce it comes with on the side, it is a buerre blanc. Eating a lot of it was a little overpowering for my taste. * Niman Ranch Pork Chops ($42); It was amazing! The fruit compote and creamy polenta with the pork chop is a different twist but definitely a well balanced and delicious combination. *Farmers Friend ($14) *Port of Rye ($12) -their cocktail menu truly represents freshness and quality ingredients just like their food items. Over all rating is a solid 4.

Yelp
Went here in October for a weekend birthday lunch and it's probably the best meal I've had in Sacramento!! I've been here for almost 9 years and have always heard how amazing it was, and now sad I waited so long. The burger, the chips, the salads, the ice cream sandwiches, and the service was amazing. The patio was lovely for our group of 5. Looking forward to going back very soon!

Yelp
Magpie's food was excellent! We stopped in July on the way to Tahoe. We loved it so much we stopped on the way back too! Anything you try here will be delicious. Some of the best food we've had in a long time. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious - kind service, beautifully seasoned food using farm fresh seasonal produce on their seasonal menus. I love how they offer so many delicious food, something perfect for anyone, and the quality is phenomenal. You can tell the love, dedication, and passion that goes into making these dishes. Kindhearted, knowledgeable, professional, and friendly staff service here. Thank you everyone for making our day special -- I appreciate everyone!

Yelp
This place definitely catches your eye if you're walking around due to is really nice curb appeal. I would say, the menu is extremely over priced for the portion sizes that are offered. This place is also very designed to one specific palate and I don't believe a majority of people would be able to find something to eat. I had the winter BLT which had everything I knew would be a "safe" option for me. The bacon was perfect! The only downer was the sandwich was incredibly hard and dry. My friends got the house made pasta and they both enjoyed it but the portion didn't feel fulfilling. All in all the service was okay everyone seemed kind but we waited a bit for our food along with our check our waitress did however keep our glasses filled with water. Overall not a bad experience but I don't think I would come again due to the price and less variety.

Yelp
Came here for dinner. It was an enjoyable experience. Food was amazing, we split all of the dishes we ordered and everything was perfect. The hummus and olive oil with bread and the scallops were excellent, the pesto pasta was light and wasn't too heavy, salad was refreshing, and the pork chop was delicious. The server was attentive and patient. The restaurant had a very nice vibe for midtown.
