Maguro Brothers - Review - Chinatown - Oahu - The Infatuation

"You’re in Hawai‘i, which means you’ve probably got poke on your mind. There are plenty of great places in Honolulu, but head to Maguro Brothers for a simple version that highlights fresh fish tossed to order with minimal seasonings of limu and salt or shoyu and onion. While you can expect a consistent line in Waikīkī after they open in the late afternoon, the Chinatown location is less busy, stays open until the early afternoon, and rounds out the slim menu of poke and chirashi with grilled hamachi kama and ahi belly." - Martha Cheng

"Chinatown’s Kekaulike market can be a bit grimy, but don’t let that deter you from seeking out Maguro Brothers, a sparkling clean stall in the back row that serves some of the city’s freshest fish. Brothers Junichiro and Ryojiro Tsuchiya were fishmongers in Japan, and here on Oahu, they’re at the market every morning picking out the best catches. Their stall serves poké, sashimi, and surprisingly great ramen, plus lots of fresh fish for home-cooked dishes. The must-orders are the spicy ahi tuna bowl and the maguro donburi, auction fish laid over nori, ginger, and rice."

Google
Casual grab and go spot within a marketplace. Sushi is incredibly high grade and fresh. Melts in your mouth with each bite. The sushi rice was well textured with a touch of rice vinegar. Very well rounded meal and worth a stop if you’re in Chinatown.

🍣🍱 for professionals, locals and tourists near or in downtown HNL. Absolutely loved this spot! I ordered the ahi limu poke bowl and it was delicious — super fresh, flavorful, and perfectly portioned. At $13.95, the price is more than reasonable for the quality and quantity you get. It’s a true hidden gem tucked away in Maunakea Marketplace, Chinatown. You won’t find anything this fresh and affordable anywhere nearby. My kids love the spicy ahi and hamachi sashimi bowls. Enjoy! 💯🤙

Google
Hands down the best meal we had in Hawaii. We tried several different spots for poke/sashimi but this was easily our favorite. Wish we discovered it sooner!!

Alex

Google
Tucked away at the back, when coming through the main entrance. Very crowded mall with numerous food stalls. Got the Hawaiian Limu which was amazing. Large size was just enough to hit the spot. Not a huge fan of the super busy and hectic mall, but there was lots of seating available, and the location is the calmest considering.

Google
Food was amazing! The fish was fresh and the rice was cooked to perfection. I ordered the ume shiso poke and hubs got the king salmon/ahi combo. It’s in a food court area so I got a bit lost but I'm glad I persisted and found it! There is a sitting area with tables and chairs, but not many. We went right before closing time and I was worried I would be turned away, but the lady was super kind. And you don't come here for the atmosphere, you come for the food!!!

Sade Oba

Google
Tried a variety of offerings: Grilled Ahi Belly, Grilled Hamachi Kama, and King Salmon Donburi w/ Scallops. But the best, by far, was the Grilled Miso Salmon. It was perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. I just hope to be able to go back to Maguro Brothers again someday to have the Grilled Miso Salmon again!

Google
Excellent fresh sushi and sashimi. Come here if you’re around Chinatown during the day and want to avoid the wait of Waikiki in the evening. Sashimi were reasonably priced and super fresh, lots of options to choose from as well!

Andrew Gomez

Google
Their hand rolls are soo good. They are a smaller size but perfect little snack size that make you feel amazing. The chutoro was so good and fatty. I would recommend to anyone in the area. I think they have a good truck as well.

Tarique M.

Yelp
I believe this is the best sashimi and poke place on Oahu island! Service very fast and friendly.

Yelp
I've been hearing a LOT about Maguro Brothers, and after finally trying them out...I GET IT. My partner and I were visiting Honolulu and staying close to Chinatown so we decided to stop by for lunch on a Thursday. I knew we could order online ahead of time, but since we weren't in a rush, we decided to just walk over and order once we get there. We had bad timing because once we got there, they had a sign up saying they were Temporarily Closed and would resume taking orders in 20-30 minutes. We think they had a huge rush and needed some time to catch up on orders. We decided to walk around the food hall before falling in line to wait for them to reopen (we had asked a few patrons waiting on their order how long it had been and took a guess). Once we finally got our food, my partner and I were speechless! The fish was so fresh. No hint of fishiness at all! The texture of the fish was perfect - that kind of nice chew without it being too firm or chewy, and the fatty pieces just melted in your mouth. The sauce of the poke was also very tasty, heavy in umami, and was satisfying to pair with rice. We both said this has definitely been our favorite poke experience on the island so far! If you can make the time, highly recommend trying them out!

Yelp
I was looking for a new poke spot and found Maguro Brothers on Yelp. We found street parking down the road. The restaurant is in this food court area. They have some bar space specifically for the restaurant but there was plenty of seating. We got the regular bowls because we weren't super hungry and it was filling. Truffle lemon poke bowl: 4/5, I've never had poke with truffle before! I love truffle so I knew I had to try it. It's a subtle truffle flavor and it surprisingly went well with the fish. Spicy poke: 4/5, you can't go wrong with spicy poke. It wasn't too spicy and it was very flavorful. Even though we only had the poke, I would love to come back and try the different donburi.

Yelp
We wanted to love this place! The owner was so kind and friendly. The poke we got was not super flavorful, dry and we were disappointed in the quality. We went with the large poke (shoyu onion I believe) which was one of the popular ones and had a salty kick. It was a bit hard to find this place, you have to enter to marketplace.

Yelp
This was the last stop on my Oahu trip, and boy, it was worth the wait! We heard this place gets packed, so we got here about 15 minutes before opening, and wound up being the second group in line. On to the food! I've been to Japan several times, and flat out, this is the best sashimi I've ever had outside of Japan! Period! I got the salmon sashimi, and my gosh, it was SO GOOD! It melted like butter! The tuna poke was utterly amazing as well! And all of this fish was on a bed of delicious rice! Long story short, this place is worthy of the hype and praise! Next time I visit Oahu, I'm going to visit twice, minimum!

Yelp
Beautiful service at both locations, particularly at the one in Maunakea Marketplace. The quality of the fish used in ahi pokes was higher than average in our experience: quite fresh, but still with a few more tough fibers included than one would find in a high grade sashimi preparation. Rice used was medium to long grain, not sushi rice. Poke was seasoned more lightly than it is at most poke establishments (like Ono and Foodland), with a less heavy handed approach to alliums. I like that the lighter seasoning allowed the focus to be on the freshness of the fish and tender textures. I can't pretend to have any local expertise, but this was probably one of my three favorite poke places we tried in and around Waikiki (alongside Ono Seafood and Maguro Spot).
google avatar

Amie N.

Yelp
About $15-$16 a plate? Super fresh poke and they cut fish in the back so yk its quality and ur getting bang for ur buck/ warm, sticky rice and the tuna was flavored with lime ponzu, not too salty which i like. the salmon was mildly spicy and flavorful/fatty.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty hidden place in Chinatown, located in a food hall. It's a tiny food stall with a dining area shared with the other food stalls. I tried the shoyu ahi XL plate since I was sharing it. We decided to ball out and added on scallops, uni, and ikura since we are on vacation LOL. Overall everything was realllyy fresh and did not have a fishy smell. The fish tasted very clean and the shoyu taste was nice and light. This was a really refreshing bowl of poke but it did cost $40 in total with all the add ons. Staff was super nice and was patient with us while we looked at the menu and decided what we wanted. If you need to use the restroom, you have to ask the staff for a key but he actually came out and unlocked it for me. Parking was a little hard to find but we were able to get a free street spot. We did see paid parking garages as we circled.
google avatar

Nadiyah S.

Yelp
Not bad not great. If you need a quick fix for sashimi and happen to be in Chinatown this is a good place to go, but not a destination foodie spot. They have a great selection of combo meals you can get although the size of the sashimi are reflected in the price, which is reasonable.

Yelp
2 words to describe Maguro Brothers (MB): FRESH FISH When in Chinatown, my go to place is MB. There are so many options but the freshness of the fish from MB is unlike other places. The poke bowls are made to order and mixed fresh. So be patient as it just makes the poke so much better tasting. As you bite into the pieces of ahi, it just melts in your mouth. You can just taste the freshness! My absolute favorite is the spicy ahi. It is a tad bit spicy for me (yum!) but if spicy is not your thing, I'd recommend something else. If I could, I'd order everything! Seating wise, there's a couple tables in front but you may need to hunt around. It's to be expected though of Chinatown and that marketplace. I hope that MB will consider opening a shop outside of Waikiki or Chinatown..maybe somewhere that has more parking options haha! But if you love poke, you NEED to try Maguro Brothers!

Yelp
Located in Maunakea Marketplace their stall is on the very end. If you know downtown then you already know the parking situation. Street parking is there if you're lucky enough to snag a spot or there's also a paid lot right across the street. I ordered the miso salmon. The prices here are reasonable & I came after the lunch rush so I didn't have to wait long at all for my order to be ready. This place is like a food court so there's a bunch of tables in the center to eat at. They also have their own bar seating right in front of them. My salmon was really flavorful and cooked perfectly. When I first looked at it I thought the portion was kind of small but after eating it was actually the perfect amount.
google avatar

Jewelia C.

Yelp
Maguro Bros came highly recommended and did not disappoint! VERY fresh seafood for a very reasonable price! I got tuna, uni, ikura, and oysters and all was extremely fresh and delicious! If I lived near here I would eat here ALL THE TIME. Would probably stop by for lunch every single day lol! Wish we had a place this fresh, convenient, and affordable in SF! This location was inside a foodcourt near Chinatown. Will definitely visit again when I'm back in Hawaii!
google avatar

Vee V.

Yelp
I eat here multiple times when in Oahu and it's always been the last meal of my trip. They've moved since the first time I made a visit, they're in a lower level of a shopping center in a food court area now, so there's seating. My suggestion, however, is take your order to the beach and enjoy a nice sunset and watch the surfers if it's dinner time. They always have a line, but they move fast. The fish is always fresh, you really can't go wrong with any selection so I won't even bother with any specific items. I've eaten them all. Just to give them a try.
google avatar

Yelp
Local Sushi Bar without the "Bar" & Bar Price‼ I really enjoyed all my dishes that I've ordered over the years of this business. Serious & Meticulous given the location.

Yelp
Excellent, fresh fish. Located in Maunakea Marketplace in Chinatown. Bento Presentation is nice. Very busy so you know it's good!
google avatar

Magan C.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with maguro bros !! Everything is so fresh and always top quality. They've moved since the last time I was here but they're in a better spot nyaow in my opinion with more available seating. Service was fast and it was easy to order! Staff is super nice and helpful.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Very yummy & fresh fish located in the back of the marketplace! They conveniently have dining tables and plenty other food stalls in the hall that you can grab other food/drinks from. I came with my friends for lunch and the service was nice and fast. I ordered the chutoro donburi and my friends ordered different chirashi bowls. Everything was delicious! The fish was super fresh and yummy. I also liked the tamago that was added in. Will definitely be back for the poke.
google avatar

Elsie Y.

Yelp
I was a bit hesitant as I didn't have the greatest experience at the Waikiki location but this was absolutely delicious! Tucked away in a little food court, we made it just before they closed and were able to grab some spicy mayo ahi and I was so glad I tried it again. Didn't get seasoned rice this time which made all the difference (wasn't offered it this time). The food came out quickly and the fish was really fresh.
google avatar

Risa L.

Yelp
Came here because my favorite Chinatown poke place was already closed (Kahiau). I've been to Maguro Brothers many times before and they are still fresh and ono tasting. Ordered the #22 Hawaiian; local tuna with limu seaweed, chili and sesame oil. This is a quintessential poke combo. The fish was clean tasting and soft. They used Hawaiian salt which gave a nice crunch, but did get a bit salty after several bites. Also ordered #21 Spicy Mayo; local tuna with masago, chili, and mayo. Wow, this one was kinda spicy for me. Most places you go to the spicy ahi is just "spicy", not here though. It was a nice little kick. It wasn't overly creamy/mayo-y. Only gripe was that some of the pieces of ahi were stringy, but it was not grisly at all. The rice was good and they get your order out pretty quickly. Choice of regular or XL size. They also have some cooked fish dishes and add-ons like ikura, scallop, and uni.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited late on a weekday evening and it was quite busy, but the line moves fast and the staff were spot on about the wait time. Note that it was a bit tricky to find (basement level among other food vendors), and that it is takeout only. There are multiple tables just outside the storefront where many people choose to eat. As for the food- yes, it definitely lives up to the hype!!! We thoroughly enjoyed their Mix maguro donburi and King salmon combo with limu poke. Very fresh tasting and reasonably priced. We got the XL size of the Mix maguro - if you're very hungry, would recommend the XL size. Let's just say if I lived nearby, I would be a frequent customer here!!! Absolutely recommend if you're looking for fresh tuna specifically in the Waikiki area!

Vicki G.

Yelp
Fresh. Flavorful. Freakin' 'ONO! I'm embarrassed. I've lived here over half a century and worked in town for 30+ years and this is my FIRST time here. I've seen the choke social media posts about how amazing this place is but just shrugged it off. My total loss!! Anyhoos...this little gourmet hole in the wall, "hidden" in Kekaulike Market, is a fish lover's dream come true. Hubz and I shared the Hamachi/Ahi Poke combo and the Miso Hamachi plates. Oh. M. Gee. The fish, whether raw or cooked, melts in your mouth - so moist and juicy; we were "mmm'ing" and "yum'ing" after each bite. Each plate was served with its own sides and complimented its respective dish perfectly. The portions were generous; we left healthily full but not overstuffed. Friendly service - we appreciated the helpful recommendations after explaining that Hubz was allergic to spicy foods. I can't wait until our next field trip to town. Probably much sooner than later.

Yelp
I don't normally write review but had to leave this time. This is extraordinary quality with this price. Super fresh and once again the quality is amazing. Quick pickup with pre online order. Only difficulty was the parking. But worth everything. Thank you!!!
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
The journey to find this location took me into a vibrant Chinatown market. We went about 1:30 and this wasn't nearly as busy as the Waikiki location at dinner time, which was a pleasant surprise! Service was quick and the fish was outstanding as always!
google avatar

Ella E.

Yelp
I didn't love the poke. It's seemed pricey and a bit too saucy for the bowls. Also, I don't like paying for the toppings alacart
google avatar

Cynthia M.

Yelp
Loved how fresh and delicious everything was! It was also nice to grab food and eat outside where there were live music performances.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
The Maunakea Marketplace food court has many good options. I moved to downtown a few months ago and haven't tried Maguro Bros since moving. After going to an elite event and getting the recommendation from a fellow yelper I decided to give it a shot. I was so happy that I did. I tried the miso salmon over rice for lunch and will definitely be back for the same.
google avatar

Yasna M.

Yelp
Some of the freshest sashimi and poke I've ever had! Opens at 5 and has limited times so check their availability! But incredible food. Decent selection, not too big, side sauces were $2 each which is kinda pricey. Best rice I think I've ever had! Highly recommend the spicy tuna and salmon!
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
Quick service and lots of options. We wanted poke without rice and they offered it. There are tables in the food court for dining and people-watching.
google avatar

Granger L.

Yelp
A friend happen to come across this poke spot while looking around in Chinatown and holy crap did he find a gem. The poke here was fantastic. It didn't even look like a poke spot at first glance because of all the fish and seafood they showed in the front, but it had some amazing poke.

Tso N.

Yelp
This was my absolute favorite dining experience in Oahu. Simple, fast, fresh and delicous. Next door to Waffle and Berry and Royal Lobster below street level in a food court like area. We ordered a large salmon and hamachi donburi($25), side of uni ($7), and the special of the day blue fin o tuna donburi ($25). Enjoyed everything served. Favorite was the o tuna. Will definitely return. It was a 10min walk from the Hyatt Regency, slightly passed the International Marketplace. Street parking.
google avatar

Mark N. T.

Yelp
I was in Chinatown. I tried to find some Chinese. I saw Maguro bro that specialized in Poke and Kaisen-don(Japanese seafood bowl). I decided to grab it. It was kind of reasonable in Honolulu. I called it Chinatown prices. No matter where I was, Chinatown always offered me cheap food. I ordered Hamachi. That was so delicious. I loved it. It seemed that the cook and manager spoke Japanese. No wonder I was in Hawaii which had a lot of Japanese! Arigato!
google avatar

Bonnie T.

Yelp
Super fresh chutoro that doesn't even necessarily need all the condiments to go with it to scarf down. Located inside an indoor marketplace/eatery food court in Chinatown at the very end of the court! You pass by a bunch of fresh fruit and fish on your way. We ordered the #2, which was chutoro sashimi, some tamago, and brown grain rice for under $20. Not much to share portion wise, but may be good for a light lunch. You can eat there or grab it to go. Little shop has some friendly staff! The food hall itself leaves some room to be desired sanitary-wise, but hey, it's part of the Chinatown ritual. Restroom is out the door on the left side!
google avatar

Breanna B.

Yelp
This place was tucked in a corner in Chinatown in Maunakea Marketplace Foodcourt! There was a lot of seating around the food court but there was a lot of people that took almost every seat! We had saw this place on Youtube so we decided to try. We got the C2 Chirashi Combo with spicy poke and it was $19. The donburi was delicious! I think my favorite was the salmon. The rice to fish ratio was perfect and the poke was pretty decent! This place was good, but not super mind blowing. If I was in the area, I would try their other donburis!
google avatar

Benjamin N.

Yelp
Came by on a Tuesday around noon and there was no line. We ordered the C2 (Chirashi Donburi with spicy poke). The rice was seasoned well and wasn't bland. The fish itself was pretty fresh. It was a good variety of seafood to try and easy to share as a quick bite. My favorite was the salmon! There's a fair amount of seats and tables to eat your food at.
google avatar

Pinhwa S.

Yelp
The seafood here is so fresh! Everything I got tasted so good! I was suprised how cheap the uni was. Def coming back here next time I visit Honolulu. This location is in chinatown, the owners are Japanese. The place is small inside the food court.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
....freshness in fish is extremely important. The color of the product, the smell, texture, taste and presentation combine for the ultimate dining experience! Maguro Brothers Hawaii, located in the tiny Chinatown food court at 1120 Maunakea Street is a 5/5 star deal. We you make an order, the workers prepare and slice the fish....right there...the fish is cut to perfect bite sized pieces and arranged with onto a bed of sushi rice. This "eye-candy" presentation (see pic), is colorful and when I took a look at it....it made me drool!! Digging in, I received flavors of the sweet-and-sour sushi rice....the fresh and buttery-melt-in-the mouth fish...with the taste of green onions....a sting of wasabi..and finally a salty rich shoyu! I went in for two more bites....then I had to cleanse my palate with the ginger. I took a deep breath....took a break with the tamago pieces (egg).....then polished it off. It cost me about $15 w/ a Hawaiian Sun drink. My first time here...and I can't wait to go back tomorrow!
google avatar

Mia H.

Yelp
I stumbled into this stall when I was walking around Chinatown. As I've actually heard quite a lot about it prior, I decided to make a stop and check it out. Located in a food hall, Maguro Brothers is on the far end of the hall and has a wide selection of fresh fish. I got a small poke bowl as well as some uni for a fairly good price, and the staff working were super kind to give me some of their personal recommendations. The portions were moderate and the fish was fresh. Overall, I think it's a great spot if you're in the area and want some high-quality fish. (I would love to try their more recently opened location in Waikiki too!)
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots on the island!! There are two locations and this one is hidden inside the Chinatown Plaza food court. Pro tip: I recommend going to this location over the Waikiki one if you want super fresh fish and a shorter line! I ordered the chutoro combo with shoyu poke and grilled miso salmon - they were both amazing. The tuna was very fresh and had a clean taste, but the star of the show was definitely the grilled miso salmon. It was honestly so mindblowing that we went back to order another!! The salmon was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the grilled miso flavor added an immense depth of flavor. I highly recommend checking Maguro Brothers out and trying their grilled miso salmon!!
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. I always stop by Maguro Brothers for some fresh fish. My husband loves their grilled plates as well. Their tuna is always fresh and prices are reasonable but it can add up quickly if you start including some add ons.
google avatar

Kay D.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh. A little pricey for the size but overall was probably one of the best we had. The location can be a little hard to find but enter the indoor market and take a right it's against one of the exit doors. They charge you for extra wasabi and ginger a little stinge but we deal.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
Maguro Brothers is tucked away in maunakea market place, I've got to say what a hidden gem the owners were really helpful when taking orders. Their menu was quite extensive. We ordered a few different things, the chirashi, the bluefin my kids lovers the miso hamachi and salmon. It's clean and the fish was great. One of the owners can be seen in the back prepping and cutting. The food was overall very excellent and overall and excellent experience and place to come to eat.
google avatar

Karl F.

Yelp
Did I mention the fish was fresh? There are two maguro bros, but I think the Chinatown one has super fresh fish. Plus, the line is shorter. Several varieties of poke and sashimi are available. However, since the fish is so fresh, I prefer limu (salt and seaweed) instead of shoyu based poke. May as well taste the fresh caught Hawaiian fish. In Chinatown, they are located in a small food court. Unfortunately, you must find parking and you may have to hurdle a few homeless people on the way to their stall. The place is very simple, nowhere to sit. There are a few tables outside but I prefer taking my bowl to the beach.
google avatar

Keylee L.

Yelp
As a life-long enjoyer of all that is sushi, sashimi, poke, etc, this is hands down the best fish I've ever eaten in my entire life. Maguro Brothers has me crying in the Chinatown Maunakea Market with their bluefin tuna and toro special. Seven pieces of heaven on delicious sushi rice with furikake and green onion is filling and absolutely delicious. Will be coming back to try everything else on the menu!
google avatar

Jonah A.

Yelp
Freshest poke in Waikiki. Period. Quality over flash -- super minimal setup, but the fish melts in your mouth. Get there early before they sell out. The seared ahi is insane.
google avatar

Willow M.

Yelp
Best sushi I have ever had!! The man who helped me was super sweet and provided great service. The environment is super cool with family style seating. Hope to go back soon!
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Where there are many many poke places on the island, this one is located inside Chinatown. The employees are all Japanese so other than poke, they also have various sashimi. It was good compared to places on the mainland, but because we're in Oahu, they can do better. Fish was fresh, sauce was good, but the rice really lacked. It was either overcooked or sat too long. I'll still give them 4 stars because we tried them out about an hour before they closed.
google avatar

Halei J.

Yelp
This place is awesome! They serve super fresh poke and the people who work there are super nice. It's in the Maunakea Marketplace. It's at the very end of the "foodcourt" I actually missed it at first. They have lots of options of poke bowls or hot food on rice as well or just poke which is what I always order. I just want the fish! Can't wait to be back on my next trip!
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
I'll keep this short because you already know that this place is great. We finally ticked this restaurant off the must try list...and now its on the must move into frequent dining rotation list! Excellent quality sashimi and poke served over superb sushi rice at affordable prices. Service could not be friendlier and the Maunakea market location just feels right.

Yelp
Nestled in a quiet corner of our bustling city lies a true culinary treasure Each bowl is a symphony of colors and textures, with fresh, high-quality ingredients. From the velvety slices of sashimi to the vibrant array of options that delights the senses. In summary, if you're seeking a nice and quick lunch, look no further than this hidden gem. Delicious! Tucked away in a food court and there are other options nearby. The noodles pictured to the left from another stand were phenomenal as well
