"Mah-Ze-Dahr has closed inside the Hugh food hall, with two locations remaining in Manhattan. The bakery announced the shutter on Instagram." - Melissa McCart

"With the kind of display case that makes us wonder what Holly Golightly saw in all those Tiffany trinkets anyway, Mah-Ze-Dahr bakery's original location is a sunny spot on Greenwich Street. Behind the glass are little piles of perfectly folded croissants, pillowy, cream-filled brioche donuts, chocolate-studded cookies, and a few savory bites. These treats are as delicious as they are elegant, and there are some seats inside, plus a couple of sidewalk tables where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee or one of the city’s best hot chocolates. With three locations in NYC and another in Virginia, this Tom Colicchio-backed cafe has a whiff of the corporate expansion plan about its standard-issue, gray-blue-bronze decor, but you’ll barely notice it under the welcoming scents of butter and coffee grounds." - Sonal Shah

I went to Mah ze Dahr for their dark chocolate brownies, and I was not disappointed. The brownies are thick and crumbly with powdered sugar sprinkled on top. They are a good balance of rich but not too dense. My friend got the croissant monkey bread which was buttery and flaky. Their iced mocha is one of the better mochas I’ve tried. It had the right amount of chocolate swirled in. This bakery is located in the Hugh food court inside a large building, so it may be hard to find at first. Overall solid pastry selection.

I've heard a lot about the cheesecake here, and this was a disappointment. Was it good? Sure - but not exceptional. Also tried a slice of the dark chocolate cake. Again, it's good but not exceptional. Glad I tried both; but likely won't be back.

The old/new staff are super nice, and friendly. Eric, Milan, Lucy and others. But today we are saddened that this location we be closing. We will miss you guys…..Thank you guys!!!

Quick service , Great coffee. I’d say it’s a bit overpriced but I guess these are normal prices these days especially in the city. But you do get your moneys worth. Coffee beans are top quality.

Google
Great bakery one of the better ones I have come across in the city. Not easy to find though for the map challenged like me. I took a few extra pictures of the entrance hope it helps you find it

The cake is actually overhyped, I've had better chocolate cakes around NYC. Good coffee though and the staff are very friendly

Google
High-key this is a chain of cafes around the city, but low-key the service is hospitable and quick! That cold brew on tap with oat milk is a morning ritual for me. Cookies are a treat too.

Good cheesecake and donut. Nice staff.

Yelp
Mah-Ze-Dahr enthusiast here! This was my first time visiting their Midtown location; it's in a food hall which seems to be popular with office workers. The gentleman who took my order and handed me my bagged treats was incredibly cheerful and friendly. And efficient.  I purchased my go-to chocolate chip cookie ($2.50) and tried the strawberry bar ($4.50). The oat crumbles and strawberry filling were fabulous! What a delightful summer dessert.  I still need to try their savory items, but really, you can't fail with any sweets from Mah-Ze-Dahr.

Yelp
Today was the first time I tried this bakery. I had read very nice reviews about their baked goods, so I was looking forward to finally trying Mah-Ze-Dahr Bakery, at the East Side Location at THE HUGH, located at Lexington Avenue and East 53 rd Street. I was very disappointed with the Signature Bar. Mine was extremely dry. You can see my photos. I had also bought a chocolate brownie. I had asked the nice person helping me whether the brownie was cake-like. She said it was more fudgy, so I was happy with her answer, because I was in the mood for a fudgy type of brownie. Sadly, I was also disappointed with the brownie because it was more cake-like than fudgy. If you have ever baked brownies, you know the difference. I posted a check-in with a single photo of the very dry Signature Bar and comment, but I decided to go back to the bakery to ask what the Signature bar was supposed to taste like. I explained that my Signature Bar was very dry. I also told the woman that I was disappointed with the brownie, too, and asked if we could do something about it. I had to ask because the woman said, "well, I can let the manager know"...I had originally asked to speak to the manager when I had returned, but was told that the manager WAS NOT THERE. ****. I really wanted to try something that I could say something good about. ****And this is where the importance of good customer service training, which includes LISTENING (!!) plays a critical part in any business. If a customer takes the time to come back to your business to tell you that they are not happy with your product, the smart business move is to try to see if there is something you can do to have a happy customer. So the ideal customer service conversation should have gone something like this: BUSINESS: I'm sorry if you didn't like this particular product, would you like to try something else? BUT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. Instead, I had to ask if there was something we could do about it. And the nice lady at the counter offered a refund, but, I explained that I did not want a refund, because I really wanted to try a baked good that I could say something good about. (This was a hint that I'd be telling someone about the baked good...and with lots of people doing social media, including YELP REVIEWS, businesses should be atuned to that). And so, I asked about the carrot cake, AND the woman behind the counter said that it is good, AND a lot of people like our cheesecake. I said, okay, then I'd like to try the cheesecake. A slice was carefully put into a beautiful, deep blue, navy box. I ordered my iced caffeine-free FRUIT tea, and walked back to my table here, inside THE HUGH. HERE IS WHAT I LIKED: 1. The beverage- caffeine-free, fruit, iced tea. 2. The beautiful deep blue navy box that the cheesecake was put into. I LOVE the COLOR of the box and the coordinating matching deep blue bakery-tissue paper inside. LOVED ALL OF THIS--the packaging. 3. Well, as for the cheesecake, it was ok. I am a Junior's cheesecake fan. So, if I had a craving for cheesecake and couldn't get to Junior's, or a place where it is sold, THEN, THIS WOULD DO. For me, my three tries of baked goods were enough. I doubt I shall return to Mah Ze Dahr bakery. For me, the only thing I would enjoy again would be the caffeine-free, fruit iced tea. BUT, THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. I would suggest that you try the bakery yourself, and YOU DECIDE. Today is Wednesday February 22, 2023. Maybe it was just an off-day. That can happen anywhere, anytime. There have been MANY GOOD REVIEWS, so try it yourself, and post your review with photos. I shall post my photos now.

Yelp
Mah Ze Dahr is very close to my doctors office. There's a lot of food options in the food court in this building but they don't open until 11:30am. I was very hungry at 9:30am. I was here at Mah three months ago and remembered I really enjoyed the coffee and Cheddar Jalapeño Scone. I knew I wanted to try the Savory Danish. I enjoyed the taste of the Danish and maybe if I had them heat it the crust would have been flaky. As it turned out I didn't want to heat it and it had a difficult to bite texture. Almost like it was heated in a microwave and left to get cold. I'm still giving Mah Five Stars because it's clean and comfortable with the nicest employees. There's lots of employees each with a task. Once you learn the drill you move through quickly. One employee even came to my seat and took away my garbage after I ate. He was very nice and enthusiastic about assisting. I rarely tip using my credit card but today I left 20%. Marianne the big spender. I recommend you visit Mah in the morning for coffee (that is very good) and have one of their unique pastry selection to go with your coffee.

Yelp
This is a grab and go location, do not expect to find a cute sitting area. The pastries and every cookie here is always good. Yes its on the more expensive side but if you go in with that mindset you will be not disappointed by the quality.

Yelp
Service is good. I order a chocolate cookie and an Americano to stay, croissant and chocolate croissant to go. Chocolate cookie is not the things to reorder but I will definitely come back for croissant. They sold out for their brioche donut by noon time. Going to try their Greenwich location on next time.

Yelp
I had originally bookmarked the West Village location but heard that it was busy all the time with long lines, so I never got a chance to go. I was in the Hugh Food Court and found out that they had an outpost here! Zero wait time, no lines at all when I went on a Monday afternoon. They had plenty of brioche donuts in stock, which was what I came for. The brioche donut is an airy light cross between a yeast donut and a brioche. It comes with a free(?) donut hole, and sprinkled with sugar on top. Inside, there is a lovely custardy vanilla cream filling, with just the right amount of sweetness. It is not super heavy, and would make both a good breakfast pastry or afternoon pick-me-up, depending on your mood. I would like to try their cookies next time, but highly recommend the brioche donut!

Yelp
Tasty bakery with an assortment of quality sweet and savory pastries. It's located inside The Hugh food hall, which is a magical place on its own. The bakery is closer to the entrance on Lexington. I originally meant to come by for the brioche donut, but I ended up with an assortment of savory and sweet pastries (vegetable foccacia, mushroom & leek croissant, chocolate tea cake, and a regular donut) from the TGTG app. The croissant is super heavy and is definitely a meal by itself. The tea cake and donut were soft and sweet without being overwhelming. They go very well with a hot drink, especially with the cold weather these days. Honestly, the foccacia was just okay. I'd recommend stopping by for a morning/afternoon snack or breakfast pastry. You can take your food to go or grab a seat inside the spacious and inviting hall.

Yelp
I love this bakery's original location and I was so happy to hear that there is an outpost near where I live. However, I am saddened because the baked goods that I got here are a bit of a hit or miss. At the regular one everything is a hit even if it doesn't look like it's going to be. Here my experience was that the cookie were stale and the coffee was just ok. Maybe they were just having an off day since ordinarily this is one of my favorite bakeries in the city but if you haven't tried them yet, I would just recommend trying their original location out.

Yelp
I've been to the West Village location twice and gotten an assortment of goodies after watching the shortbread featured on Worth It. Overall, I thought it was good, but overpriced. Things I got ranged from the soft serve to the brioche donuts. I got a TGTG bag from here recently, and it reinforced my initial thoughts. I got the circular banana bread with granulated sugar on top (I appreciated the texture contrast), a chocolate circle (not very sweet for those who appreciates a lighter dessert), a scone (chives and other veggies?), and a circular danish-like savory pastry that was very crispy and flaky - my favorite of the bunch. Again, they have good pastries, but I don't think I'd go again unless I get a TGTG bag given the prices. I am curious to try the cheesecake with the chocolate crust that they've been getting noticed for, but they don't carry this during the holiday season (~Nov-Dec) as they do a speculoos crust instead.

Yelp
This bakery is hands down my favorite for the unique and delicious pastries they have at their brick and mortar downtown. So imagine my surprise when I walked into this new food hall and they are the 1st vendor to the right. I made sure to visit them on my way out so I wouldn't buy I wouldn't buy too many of their amazing confections. The smell of fresh roasted coffee and fresh pressed espresso arrest your senses when you come in the main doors. I will say, is it's huge! There are 3 registers that can help you get in and out. They have an area off to the side where you can enjoy your pastries, coffee or tea. But You will still get the special care of the boutique space. Super glad to see I can snag a vanilla choux on the way to work with the Mah-ze- dahr charm.

Yelp
Just grabbed a double espresso and it was fabulous. Thanks for the amazing customer service and speed! It's in a mall so not my first choice, refreshingly unexpected!

Yelp
I have been to this location a few times. Overall, I'm not crazy with their coffee but the selection of pastries is good. My main concern is untrained staff that is rude. Just today when I placed an order for iced latte, the person made a mistake and put it as a hot latte and then publicly said it was my fault and I ordered the wrong thing. He kept arguing and yelling at me. This was an absolute horrible experience, I will never be back to this bakery.

Joanne L.

Yelp
Came here for the famous brioche donut but also picked up a savory pastry on a whim. I'm so glad I did. The donut was nice and light and filled with vanilla cream. I've never had a brioche donut before so was a bit surprised by the quite strong texture and flavor of the egg. I could tell the vanilla filling was of great quality but would personally prefer a regular yeasted dough to a brioche one. However, the smoked gouda biscuit really wowed me! It's not dry at all, but cheesy and buttery, with plenty of scallions and black pepper. I warmed it in the toaster oven and had a wonderful time eating the biscuit on its own.

Lauren L.

Yelp
They have a great chai tea latte - the base price is comparable to other places but it's $1 for oat milk and $1.50 for vanilla syrup which ends up making it very expensive for the same order I'd get in other places. I don't drink coffee but have heard wonderful things about their vanilla oat latte. They're pretty fast and there's a wonderful food court with plenty of seating at most times (other than during peak lunch, say 12:30, where it's ridiculously crowded at every stall.

Halle S.

Yelp
BEST banana bread in the city!!! I love it so much. The service is typically fast. My biggest complaint is that things are always sold out at this location. If you can, go to the WV location instead. It's better

Hesol K.

Yelp
Love their selection of baked goods. I always tend to enjoy a croissant or cheese cake, both of which are sooooo tasty. I love to pair either of which with a mint tea. Customer service is fast and staff is very nice. Inside is nice with some seating by the bar area or there are public tables throughout the food hall.

Martha M.

Yelp
Best thing was the oat milk latte on draft. The pain au chocolate was ok? Kind of dry. Definitely not worth $7.
