The 33 Best Restaurants In Melbourne 2023

"Maha is an institution—a well-oiled machine in a swish CBD space serving Middle Eastern dishes that recall the chef/owner’s childhood. You’ll find wines from as far afield as Morocco and Turkey to pair with spice-laden dishes like slow-roasted lamb shoulder with smoked eggplant, and miniature doughnuts stuffed with Turkish delight jelly. Offshoots Maha Bar in Collingwood and Maha East in Prahran are smaller, livelier, and often easier to get into." - ellen fraser

We had lunch at Maha restaurant in Melbourne CBD and it was absolute perfection. We ordered some starters to share and particularly loved the beef dumpling dish. We then decided to share our mains as well- the slow cooked lamb shoulder, wagyu beef, duck and snapper. Each flavour was more tantalising than the next. Our cocktails and mocktails were perfectly paired to enhance the flavours. Maha has a lovely moody ambiance and the interior styling is a dream. The only thing I would have liked more would be a small table light to help with reading the menus. But next time I visit, I’ll know what dishes to order. I highly recommend Maha.

Had an absolute amazing lunch at Maha. The roasted scallops are to die for! The lamb shoulder was melt in your mouth. And the bread - OMG - was the best I’ve ever had in my life. Would definitely return!

There's a definite cynicism to the offer here. The flavours feel subdued in some of the courses. The tuna is wonderfully flavoured, but was there 30g there? The olive palate cleanser was the only item I'd return for. But I won't The dessert was good, though every element was sweetened, leaving my blood sugar at pre marathon levels. The lamb shoulder wasn't properly processed for fine dining and bland. The hummus and bread were good enough, but the harissa...well..it wasn't, and neither was the dish, which found its "pasta" element unevenly cooked. The service was quite good if not a bit weirdly lingering/hovering at times (then again, I am incredibly good-looking), and the room plush, but the seats somehow very uncomfortable, and the banquette so cheap as to move around with me (again, my attraction at work, or is that play?). All in all, it's top $ for a meal with a few pleasant moments, 1 remarkable moment, and a few deflationary ones. The wines by the glass are unevenly poured and not particularly good. There's better all over Melbourne. And minus one star to 2, just because i never want to return.

My gosh. Dining here was an absolute delight. We walked in on Sunday afternoon for lunch and weren’t quite sure what to expect. We were warmly welcomed and taken through the menu options by the lovely Scarlett. They had a vegan specific menu and we were able to do the set menu with one vegan and one regular which was fab! The flavours of these dishes were incredible. Bold, well balanced and some surprising taste combinations that just worked! Side note, that hummus 🤤 My partners favourite dish was the lamb shoulder and I would say the hummus was a stand out - as well as the dessert! We ordered the baklava ice cream sandwich on top of the included desserts and my goodness - do yourself a favour people, get the baklava ice cream sando!! 11/10!! On top of the insanely delicious dishes, we received quite possibly the best service from Scarlett. Warm, friendly, attentive, and talked through everything with such knowledge and detail. Thanks you for a beautiful dining experience, and helping to make my partner’s birthday special ✨

Google
Maha is in my top 3 restaurants in Melbourne. My latest visit was for a business lunch and we shared from the Signature menu which is a set course with options for mains and dessert. The middle eastern fair is amazing; not authentic for purists but has global influences which is very reflective of Melbourne. The service is impeccable and the restaurant has an intimate and hospitable atmosphere that suits both casual or more intimate occasions. I highly recommend a visit for anyone who can get an opportunity.

We visited a Lebanese restaurant in Melbourne yesterday and had a mostly great experience. The food was outstanding — rich in flavour, beautifully presented, and a real showcase of modern Lebanese cuisine. The pre-set menu was a highlight, and we really appreciated the sofra style of dining, which made the experience feel communal and authentic. The standout dish for us was the lamb shoulder with dumplings — incredibly tender and full of depth. The service overall was warm and attentive, and the staff were happy to explain the dishes and accommodate requests. The only downside was the pacing of the meal. There were long gaps (around 30 minutes) between each course, and we found ourselves needing to prompt the staff to bring out the next dish each time. It disrupted the flow of what could have been a seamless experience. That said, the quality of the food and ambiance definitely made up for it. With a bit more attention to timing, this place could be exceptional.

Google
Maha consistently impresses! Celebrating my birthday there for the fourth time was magical. The vegan Signature Experience menu was a culinary delight, with each dish showcasing incredible creativity and flavor. The ambiance and service elevate the experience, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking an extraordinary meal. Highly recommended!

Google
I love their set menu. You can feel their design in each dish. Layers of flavour bring joy of special combination of raw materials. Sauce and seasoning on ingredients make it more than delicious. Four of us went there and we were all satisfied. If the portion could increase a little bit, it hits all our expectations.🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

Perfect tapas place, we found it randomly walking down Melbourne, food is great, service is great and ambiance is nice

Yelp
We were highly impressed with the next level service we were given. We felt like VIPs and this contributed to our overall highly positive experience at Maha. The ambiance was en pointe and the flavours we were served excited our palates. Will definitely be recommending this outstanding restaurant.

Yelp
Came here with a colleague for a nice dinner since we were from out of town and heard great things about Maha. We opted for the 6 course meal which was $115 pp and since I don't eat lamb, they were kind enough to switch it out and gave us a delicious fish option instead. We also upgraded to the wagyu rump 8+ and it was the highlight of the meal (we also tried the manti and I personally was not a fan). They also gave us two bags of their bread mix on our way out which was definitely interesting - we had to give these away since we were here visiting. Items I really enjoyed: Wagyu rump 8+ Hummus Dessert (beautiful presentation) Items I'd probably pass on if I had a choice: Wagyu beef manti (trust me, I recommend you supplement to the wagyu rump!) Smoke ocean trout - I don't know if it was just me but it kind of smelled like ammonia and I was not a fan.

Yelp
Fantastic tasting course and wonderful service. Made sure to accommodate my vegetarian/egg free guest. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Good good tasty, set menu on Friday for groups do 6 or more was a bit of a rip.off, we wanted a La Carte but they wouldn't allow us. Some of our guests didn't reach much so like value was terrible worked out about $300 a head and for this want to leave full and happy. Overdone sorry. Won't be going back.

Yelp
After reading the many great reviews about this place decided to check it out. You should expect to spend 2.5-3 hours in this place if you ordered the 8 courses meal. Pretty expensive too ($180) so I would say go here if you really want to get the experience and have both the money and time to waste, otherwise do another restaurant caused I felt the price is a bit excessive given the portions they provided. The two dishes I enjoyed the most were the monkfish and the appetizers. The rest of the courses were presented really nicely but they tasted just ok.

Yelp
Loved the location. Like finding a little gold mine in an unsuspecting place. First thoughts while inside was its very inviting, intimate yet sort of community. Enjoyed watching groups receive their shared food. The variety & tastes. Staff were well trained and a pleasure to be served by. I enjoyed the food, but really hoped for a bit more 'something' for the price.. If you have the money it's a great place to try.

Yelp
Maha was highly recommended by a bartender at tapas bar/restaurant "Movida". We were told we would not be disappointed. We made reservations for Sunday lunch. A beautiful room & great service. However, we were not aware that only option was a $75PP set menu (wine extra), no a- la-carte menu options! Food good (appetizers, main dish chicken), very good service. Surprised at paying bill when we were presented with $23. weekend surcharge !! ?? Total bill $273 AUS for 2 including tip & surcharge ! A bit spendy for what it was. BEWARE. Best to investigate prior to commitment.

Yelp
Maha has been a restaurant I've been dying to try for a long time now, as I'm a huge Shane Delia fan, and I finally got around to trying it last month with a friend from out of town. From the moment I arrived to the second I left the service was impeccable; so professional and attentive. The dark timber panelling, low ceiling and dim lighting create an intimate and warm inviting atmosphere. My friend and I decided to do the Soufra and it was nothing short of amazing! It really features the diversity of Maha's middle eastern cuisine. The standouts for me from this four course meal were the hummus w/ lamb and pine nuts, pumpkin soup, delectable salmon, 12 hour slow cooked lamb, the crispy fish w/ cauliflower, fantastically spiced pilaf rice and the trio of desserts - all of which were superb but the Turkish delight doughnuts were exceptionally divine! Before our dessert was brought out we had the privilege to meet Shane who was extraordinarily lovely! A great idea to end the night was the deliciously smelling hand sanitizer our wonderful waitress provided us with, as well as the complimentary spice mix I will be sure to use. A big thank you to Shane and his outstanding staff at Maha, I will certainly be returning soon!

Yelp
Never have I ever been so spoilt or felt so indulgent as I did in Maha. everything about this place is spectacular. I don't even know where to start. you book online on a friendly easy to use website. Receive an instant text confirmation. You get a reminder a day before with parking information. You will need parking because you will need to roll your way home after eating here. You touch the entrance door and walk into a warm loving atmosphere with hot flirty waiters. There is a lead waiter in a suit that takes away your coat and other bulky items like your laptop bag and umbrella. He then skillfully swishes the napkin before he places it swiftly on your lap. He puts down the drinks menu (the wine menu is separate) and offers you still, sparkling or tap water. My fellow yelper friend and I got their mocktails. I got a martini with sour cherry and watermelon juice. Quite sweet and tasted like a redskin. My friend got their Turkish lemony mocktail - very refreshing! We ordered their four course banquet. she is a pescetarian; so, they replaced the meat dishes with suitable ones for her. We started off with bread rolls with carrot dip, olives, beef Kofta, pumpkin kibbeh (was like a cream cheese spread) and saffron spiced chicken wings. Second course was chicken tagine and I've forgotten the rest due to hitting instant food coma! By the time we got to third course, we were so full that we had to ask for takeaway because the food was too good to let it go to waste. The third course was lamb shoulder, swordfish, wheat pilaf, and fattoush salad. Every dish was bursting with flavor and so unique. For example I had never seen such massive cous cous (how did it get that big - I mean this pearl cous cous were like grandma sized pearls). the fish was so delicate and succulent. the lamb shoulder was tender and fell apart easily. Eggplant had never tasted so good. I just ate and ate and didn't need to add anything - no pepper, no salt, and no chilli (God forbid). Each morsel was like heaven in my mouth. The desserts were OK. The sorbet was refreshing. The carrot cake was the best I've ever had. It didn't taste like carrot cake - just very unique and interesting! Turkish delight doughnuts are not for me - fried and the flavour of Turkish delight - no thank you! There were lots of funny moments. I asked the waiter where the toilet was and he responded with "Did you mean the toilet or the nightclub?" Didn't even crack a smile saying that. when we asked for takeaway, he winked at us. As he put our dishes down or cleared our plates, he gazed at us way longer than normal and turned around and just stood there a tad too long (hmm - these Italian men!) Our takeaway was provided in beautiful bags. sturdy bags - the cardboard paper kind, not the cheap plastic kind. The takeaway boxes come with instructions - eat ASAP! HAHA! We cleansed our hands with spritzs of orange blossom and got a present -a bag of some legendary sumac ($8 bucks each) They remembered our stuff as we left. We must have waited for a minute longer and the host said to us "We didn't want to see you go so soon which is why we delayed in bringing your bag." SMILE Great humour. Fabulous food. Great service. Value for money. Felt so indulged and happy. maha is truly special. AND now i'm going to order their recipe book!

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been back to Maha, my enduring memory was of generous servings and excellent service. It's good to see some things never change... with the addition of Shane Delia the food is now a notch above. The food is exceptional, balanced, flavoursome and innovative in its execution. Cocktails are fantastic and the staff knowledgeable and friendly. I had the 5 course menu, which was just perfect... if you're a bit hungry and I recommend you go in hungry... try the 6.

Yelp
I don't know why it took me so long to write this review. This was the best dining experience of my life! Seriously! We had the vegetarian three course meal and every dish was delectable. The restaurant is pricey, but worth it. I will definitely go back next time I'm in Melbourne.

Yelp
I want so much to give a higher rating but based on my experience of The Spice Journey Sunday, a three is all I can give. Shane Delia is probably my favourite Australian chef and I loved his series, I have been excited about going to Maha for a long time but the opportunity kept eluding me, but my partners birthday lunch finally lined up perfectly. Walking into the restaurant, I'm immediately surprised, a lavish bar, blue opulent couches and then almost diner style tables, I don't get it, everyone was packed in so tightly as well there was no enjoying intimate conversation. The music a combination of lovely Arabic folk and American rap. The service was attentive, however we were served by at least three different waiters. One of which was not knowledgeable, the other two were fantastic though, there was a gentleman in a suit wondering around asking if everyone "was ok?" The food.. Maybe I expected too much because it was Shane Delias restaurant or because it is the food I grew up with.. But, what was good was incredible and what wasn't good, was inedible. It was great value for what we got at an establishment like Maha, $65 for four courses. The generosity and experience is probably worth me kicking it up to four stars, but I'll review again after doing dinner. The entree was fabulous, I can't fault it. The second course, the pork Jowl I found almost sickly. The dumplings were great, true to the Turkish palate. The main, 12 hour lamb was so dry it was unpalatable. The salmon was overcooked in my humble opinion. The grains unpleasant with no clear flavour of fruit and nut. Beside there being no pumpkin seeds in our salad, it was peppery and delicious. The desert, I can't say enough good things about it. I could go and eat desert there day and night! They were all perfectly balanced and creative and like nothing I've ever tasted before! Just go and try them now! Their bar menu is most impressive, sporting speciality items from all over the globe. A lot of thought has been put in to establishing it. The drinks and cocktails available are most impressive. I ordered a Morning Sunshine, a pomegranate, vanilla and coffee concoction- lovely and did wake me up. Overall, Maha is a very special place. Given the flavour combinations and presentation of dishes I am positive my experience was a fluke and I will be going back to try out the dinner menu, more deserts and delve into that bar! Highly recommended!

Yelp
I can't fault a single thing about Maha. From the greeting at the door to the person topping up the wine to the waiter's superb treatment/knowledge...yep everything! The food was fab with each dish being explained perfectly and was tasted great to boot. And as a treat we got taken to the kitchen to explain the fab palette cleanser. Loved the whole experience. Can't recommend it enough.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our entire dining experience here! Food was amazing and more generous serving sizes than expected so we walked out after the 6course menu extremely full and satisfied. Meals were brought out at a really nice relaxed pace so we never felt rushed nor did we feel like we were waiting. Staff were knowledgeable, friendly and proficient. Absolute value for money for a high end restaurant! They even gave us take home digestive herbal teas to have before bed!! Would recommend this place to everyone.

Yelp
A basement restaurant in Melbourne but apart from that, pretty distant from any other cliché. Dark, with a great fit-out, you instantly feel like you belong here. A quick lunch is very well catered for, though time and time again the desire to stay longer sees me order 'just one more thing'. Middle Easter fare, a fusion of sorts, sees a plethora of tasty dishes fill the menu. If a la carte seems all to hard- choose one of the many set menus. The booze list is extensive and complete, carefully selected to match the style of the menus. Try not to leave without dessert!

Yelp
Rumi What a lovely restaurant. It's a 4.4 on my non app available scale. This is a lovely restaurant which delivers extremely well on style and food. The decor is black and gold. It's a stylish and sophisticated interior which welcomes. You get the general sense immediately you walk in that you're in the hands of people who know how to provide a superior dining experience. We chose the four course banquet which delivered extremely well. There is more than ample food in this option. The starters were amazing. The flat bread was absolutely beautiful and with hummus it was utterly extraordinary. Sounds strange to go off about a piece of bread but I've never tasted it's equal. It was exceptional. I also can't praise the delicate cucumber with black sesame speeds enough. It seems odd again to say say so, but the way cucumber is prepared at middle eastern inspired places like Maha and Rumi almost completely reinvents the vegetable for me. My dish of 2017 was the simple cucumber with dill in the seasonal feast at Rumi. It's done here beautifully at Maha too. We loved it, got quite distressed finishing it and wanted more. The spicy olives were a revelation too. Beautifully flavoured and neither too hard nor too soft, it'd be hard to do olives much better than they were done here tonight. They were delicious. The kingfish cerviche was gorgeous too but was a tiny serve for two and we looked over with alarm when the neighboring table scored a much larger offering. The salmon kibbeh was pleasant and served with an extraordinary crispy puffed bread the texture of which was incredible. Next course was borek with black garlic, spinach, feta and mushroom. I've had plenty of boreks in my time but none of them tasted anywhere near as good as this one. We went quietly nuts over this dish as it was utterly adorable. The quail with apricot was superb too. You cannot cook quail any better than this, I'd suggest. The meat was beautifully moist and the flavours divine. The lamb was pulled shoulder and slow cooked. It was lovely as well although less polished than the other dishes. The swordfish was lightly grilled served with capers and was very nice indeed. We also absolutely adored the charred broccoli tabouleh. It was divine. I cannot imagine the skill that went in to cooking this dish, ie to present such a gorgeous deep charred flavour but without it ever tasting burnt. We went nuts over this dish. It is amazing. The five year aged Persian rice was very fine as well, a lovely accompaniment to the other dishes. We chose a Saloman Gruner Veltliner for our main wine and it proved to be a sound choice which went well with most dishes. We also chose a glass of Tellurian Grenache from Heathcote to go with the meat dishes. Again, it was a good choice. The wine list is very good and not overdone. There are plenty of good wines to choose. The sweets were incredible. A dark chocolate parfait, Black tahini mousse and Turkish delight doughnuts. I wasn't prepared for how good these would be. They were outstanding deserts. We loved them and could not fault them in any way. The only slight downer on the night was that we were not permitted to take part of the dessert home with us in a doggy bag. The servings are generous here and we were both very full by the time dessert arrived. We wanted to eat half of the sweets and take half home to enjoy later but the possibility was snappily dismissed by our server which was immensely disappointing. We'd paid for the food and wanted to eat it. I think the non doggy bag policy is silly and a little mean. We picked forlornly at the remaining dessert for several minutes and ate probably half of what was left. It was strange to finish a lovely meal on a slightly down note like this. Overall, it's a very very good restaurant though. You feel good being there and the fit out out is lavish, impressive and generally very comfortable and pleasing. We were slightly perturbed by how close the tables were and heard lots of the next table's conversation and boy could one of them talk. But, we did our best to ignore them and concentrate on the very fine food which proved very easy. It's all about the food and most of the food is exceptionally good as is the overall experience. There's little doubt this is one of Melbourne's best restaurants and we will definitely return in the future.

Yelp
was here for the five course dinner.. maha had been on my hit list for a loooong while now... and I had reaaally high expectations. especially for the 12hr roast lamb shoulder. it was good but not great. my local pub does a lamb shoulder exceptionally well. I have to say though the surprise was the air dried egg ricotta almond was really good... for its size it packed a lot of punch in flavour and satisfaction. The WA barramundi was good but nothing special. Just a good quality piece of fish that was cooked well. Nice and juicy melt in mouth. The skin could be crispy lightly salted though. overall the experience was good.

Yelp
Quite simply the best restaurant in Melboune. Service is absolutely top notch; the decor and the pulse of the room are perfectly in sync with the food; and the food...OMG...spectacular! You get to choose from varying sized tasting menus, and each course absolutely delights. How the mix middle eastern flavours in such fine and delicate dishes I have no idea, I'm just glad they can. We have been here twice, and on one occasion had the pleasure to meet Shane D'elia. If Shane is anything to go by, this place will always be popular and successful.

Yelp
Brilliant. Such a treat. First time back in Melbourne for 20 years and Maha was the only restaurant on 'my need to do' list. And we certainly were not disappointed. We ordered the four course menu with wine and loved every morsel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would recommend to anyone.

Yelp
I'm not sure about you, but I rarely feel so satisfied after a meal. Not just because the food was magnificent, but it was presented so well, served so excellently and all in an excellent atmosphere. Too much to recommend, but the lentil dumplings on a bed of labna were amazing.

Yelp
We had a reservation for Maha for the Sunday Spice Journey. I've long had a crush on Shane Delia and this style of food. Five courses for $85 with matching wines for $40. Total spend for a few bees and matching wine for two with a cook book- $285. It's a great way to spend a Sunday - the decor is dark and somewhat fancy for the fare. Asparagus soup was light and creamy at the same time, pumpkin puree with chicken breast with very crispy skin, homemade bread with various spices, smoke hummus, stewed lamb and my favorite, turkish delight ice cream with brownie. The service was good but the tables were very close together - maybe not the best place for a intimate conversation. Highly recommend - booking required, cracking playlist (curated by dreamy Shane).

Yelp
Situated in a lane way that gives no real hint of anything much in it, Maha is downstairs behind a simple sign, very subtle, very understated, and VERY Melbourne. We sat in a booth with candles lit around us, having arrived for dinner and were offered drinks and cocktails to start, as well as choosing sparkling or still water. We selected sparkling water for the evening and from that moment onwards our water glasses were refilled the entire night. We had a selection of 2, 4, 5 and 6 course meal to choose from and we selected the four course option. The 2 and 4 course were to "share", were as the 5 and 6 were individual portions. The first course, that fresh warm hummus, so light, and flavourful.. I'm still drooling just thinking about it as I write this, was only one of the many dishes that came out just for the first course. We ate everything that came out, the food was incredible, the service impeccable, the only dish that was largely untouched was our slow cooked lamb (on the 3rd course).. everyone at the table considered it a bit meh. Outside of this dish every other was empty. Maha has a great reputation for a great reason, this was my first time going, but it won't be my last.. that hummus is beckoning

Yelp
I came here with my group of friends for a catch up dinner. Lovely staff with impeccable service. The food itself, it was amazing. Everything was full of flavour and everyone was super full in the end that we couldn't even go for coffee. The portions were ginormous. We got the 5 course at $95 per head and it was definitely worth it. I also got the matching wines but I didn't find that to be outstanding at all which was a shame. Definitely make a reservations because it's quite popular and you'll need to make it a few weeks in advance if you're hoping to dine on a Friday or Saturday night. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
A great place for a group of friends to catch up over amazing middle eastern food, good wine and great service. The experience that I had at Maha would be very difficult to beat and I feel like it may have set the bar for all top end restaurants that I will visit in the future. Our table was booked for 7pm, my partner and I turned up early (at 6) and they were happy for us to have a drink at the bar and sat us at our table early. I don't think everybody arrived until 7.30 Our host for the night was an absolute delight to deal with, very patient and helpful with making decisions. We even learnt something new while talking to him. We went for the 4 course meal which is served as a communal type meal where you all help yourself, the dishes with more courses were served as dégustation style. Four courses with no matched wines was $85 pp. Everything you need to know about pricing is on their website. I'm not going to review each course because the food was so good that it really doesn't need to be reviewed, you go to a restaurant like this expecting good food. All you need to know is that you won't be disappointed. I will say I'd that there was more than enough served. Most of the table was wondering how we would get through all the courses after only finishing the first one. At the end of the night though I wasn't overfull and I think that this may have something to do with the leisurely pace that they allowed us to eat at. We didn't leave until almost 11pm. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anybody going out with friends or even a nice night out with your partner. You deserve it.

Yelp
Upscale and delicious Lebanese. Great service, awesome flavors, at a high price. I prefer menus where I can choose what I want. The lamb ribs were to die for.
google avatar

Dianne S.

Yelp
Pricey but worth it. $135 for two for lunch with matched wine. The staff are knowledgeable about the food and wine. The service is excellent and well, the food was a taste sensation to say the least. The serves were exactly the right size for lunch, in fact my friend and I struggled to finish it all (we did, however, because it was too good to leave ). The "matched wines" were excellent! We had no room for dessert but I can highly recommend the coffee to finish. Great service, friendly staff and calm atmosphere. Didn't need the Middle Eastern background music, however. I'll be back.

Yelp
Hidden away off the main track, Maha is well worth the exploration. I spent a delicious 3 1/2 hours eating my way through a range of tantalising dishes with my mum, cousin and Aunt for Mother's Day. The staff were great, allergies were noted and we were into our first course, of course paired with a beautful maltese sauvignon blanc. Every dish was presented beautifully and it was hard to know what to save for last. We were up to our third setting when we realised we still had mains to get through. Overall a fantastic experience, and one I will be sure to have again.

Yelp
I've been fortunate enough to eat at some of the best restaurants around the world and I'm still prepared to make this call... Maha is possibly my favourite restaurant. Everything about Maha makes me extremely happy. The location (literally underground with a shi'sha room partially elevated), the fitout, the food and the service. Maha is all about Middle Eastern cuisine and hospitality. The food is scrumptious and incredibly satisfying. Without hopefully sounding too odd - it's not just physically satisfying, it's emotionally satisfying. Sure, all the dishes may not be to your personal taste, but that doesn't mean they're not brilliant in their own right. The flavours, the textures and the smells encountered here are like a journey for your senses. Maha is far more like dining at your good friend the Sultan's palace than going out to dinner. If you like restaurants with bright lighting, dishes you can recognise and order for yourself then this isn't a restaurant for you. If you're happy to dine like Arabian royalty however, just try and get a reservation.

Yelp
Met some friends there late Friday night for dessert degustation. It was an amazing 4 courses of dessert. Their final signature dessert is to die for.

Yelp
Maha Restaurant is part of the Made Group of restaurants (The Press Club, Little Press & Cellar, Hellenic Republic, PM24, St. Katherine's and Mama Baba) and for me, is the most unique find that I have stumbled across in a while both inside this select group of restaurants and frankly out and about in Melbourne. As usual, I turned up with one other in the bowels of the Bond Street basement location with no reservation and was happily escorted to a table. I quickly became accustomed to the beautiful smell of spice and was seated in the back dining room amongst the gentle purr of the other patrons. Before ordering the six-course "Latifa" tasting menu with matching wines ($130 p/p) we tasted two iterations of Raki, which is a Turkish national drink - an unsweetened, anise-flavoured alcoholic delight. After adding some water and a cube of ice to dilute it, the taste reminded me of absinthe with a strong taste of licorice. Not to be confused with ouzo or sambuca, it was a nice way to set mood. I didn't proclaim to be an aficianado in Middle Eastern-inspired cuisine and that did not surprise the very helpful and attentive floor staff. They were not only happy to explain and educate, which for us was a curiosity regarding the origins of the food and the inspiration behind Shane Delia's menu along with the resulting wine matches which I would ultimately find quite stimulating and intriguing. Chicken kibbeh matched with a 2007 Marsovin (sparkling wine from Malta) made its appearance first and foremost and what an impression it made. Perhaps because I have visited too many "Modern Australian" and "Mexican-inspired" restaurants as of late but both the smell and texture of the chicken matched with a wine from a region that I had never drank from - ever - left me feeling like a randy teenager seeing his first "R" rated movie. If this was setting the tempo for what was to come, my expectations were effectively in the clouds. My favourite dish came out next with a familiar wine, the 2011 Tamellini Soave Classico, Soave from Veneto DOC, Italy. It recently made its appearance when I had the Melbourne Onion Soup at Vue de Monde and thought that it paired nicely then and once again, it was a winning match at Maha with the prawn and octopus tagine. What a flavour explosion. Once again the smell and texture made me giddy and I intend on going on the hunt for Shane Delia's cookbook in the hope of being able to replicate this dish in some way at home. I know that I would not be able to do it justice, but the smell still haunts me and if I could make my residence smell like this dish for a few days, I would be in a perpetual state of bliss. The 2011 Tamellini has proven to be an easy drinking wine and flexible enough to effectively match with a variety of tastes. The "boat smugglers stew" which consists of prawn, red mullet, pork belly, tamarind, saffron and tomato was another taste sensation and when matched with the simple 2010 Domain de Bieville chablis, I found it quite robust yet pleasant. It was obvious that the wine was taking a trip around the world showcasing not only the scope of the list but also demonstrating that many regional varietals pair well with food inspired from the Middle East. The stew, was a cornucopia of tastes and I found the combination of the mullet, belly and especially the tamarind to take centre stage. Yet another dish that I want to try to attempt at home, especially in the winter with the mighty Magpies on television on a Friday night. Perhaps because my palate was overwhelmed by this time, but the next dish, the seven spiced angus short rib did not make the same impression on me that the previous offerings did. I was rather indifferent to this, most likely because the 2012 Eldridge Estate Gamay was big and earthy and the beetroot that was fused into the ribs just seemed to overwhelm the dish. I have 2012 Eldridge Estate Gamay in my personal cellar so it was good to see such good representation from Mornington Peninsula. The 12 hour roasted Mt. Leura lamb shoulder was tender and easily was pulled apart. The green olive tabouleh was a great complement and this time a 2007 Colognole Chianti (district east of Florence) matched it but it did not do the lamb justice. In my humble opinion the wine was not bold enough (and actually is quite a cheap and cheerful wine) but I really did enjoy the dish. Strangely the crescendo for this meal was achieved with the single dessert. A beetroot sponge and beetroot ganache with milk chocolate peppermint crisp ice cream all hidden inside a watermelon rosewater ice. Matched with an Israeli wine - the 2010 Yarden muscat from Galilee, the smell of citris combined with the easy drinking nature of this muscat made the ganache just awesome. Maha turned out to be a great experience, not just highlighted by the plethora of new flavours and tastes, but it was also an adventure, which dining really should be.

Yelp
Maha has to be one of my all time favourites. Service is impeccable and their flexibility with the menu is unheard of in Melbourne these days. I came here for dinner and ordered the sultan banquet. I couldn't falter one item, with the 12 hour lamb being a highlight. The price was also quite reasonable for a restaurant of this standard.

Yelp
Seriously delicious. Recommend fasting for 24 hours prior as its a feast! Had the 4 course, every part was superb. I'm not generally a fan of set menus but seriously this was stunning.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite good / affordable sushi joints .Fish has always been very fresh when I've gone and they do a great job overall. Maguro, Sake, everything that I've gotten here has been excellent. While it is a cash only place they have an ATM inside and there are other ATMs in the nearby shops if needed.

Yelp
I went with a group of 10 or so for a birthday party in their function room. The 7 course banquet was preselected for the group and the food was fantastic. The ambience is upbeat, cool and filled with warm lighting. The service is friendly and professional - This is really what makes this a great place to dine. When advising the waitress the food was excellent we were informed by the waitress the owner of the restaurant was cooking our meals that night - Evidently so! Everything was meticulously presented and the flavours were unique and amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience in the private function room and recommend to anyone planning a group dinner to choose this location.

Yelp
We only had shisha/coffee/desserts here, so this review isn't wholesome, but I feel compelled to write one as we had an incredible experience in this place. The place is so cute, and the service is crazy good. I'd had to say one of the best and friendliest services I'd ever experienced in my life. No exaggeration. Also, I am half-Egyptian, and lived in the region for years, and this is the only place that really did their shisha/coffee/tea right. Down to a T. You basically sit indoors, but in an ionized courtyard that's sealed. The ionization shuts down the smoke immediately. We had an amazing experience. And it is on the pricier side looking at the menu. (That said, coffee was $5, shisha was $30, pretty standard). But because of how nice it is, we will definitely be coming back at some point to have dinner on a nice occasion. Looking at the menu too, it seems like they really know their Arabic/Middle Eastern food, as they produce items that only someone really well acquainted with the region would recognize. Downside is that will be closed for 5 weeks starting Jan 1st for full on renovation, so will have to wait till then. But will definitely be coming, and maybe bring the whole fam.

Yelp
Another amazing eatery in Melbourne! We loved this place and its food and atmosphere were great! We went for a set course menu with multiple options! Not 100% sure as I didn't order but the food kept coming and tasted amazing. There was plenty of good and the flavours were incredible. The staff were helpful and polite and provided a full explanation of each course which was handy! Will definitely eat here again and thoroughly recommend it!!!! Yum!!!!

Yelp
I don't know how you could not rate this restaurant 5 star. I've been to hundreds of restaurants throughout Melbourne and this would have to be top 5, maybe even number 1. I share my sentiments with David and Natalie W below, it was amazing from the first bite. We were on a romantic dinner for 2 and had the 4 courses (2 shared entrees, Main and shared dessert). The shared entrees totaled 5 dishes, 3 cold, followed by the hot mezze. To be honest, as I type I'm trying to re-trace exactly what we had but there was just so much! There was a seafood and chickpea tagine, the tastiest roast chicken on black hommus, breads, salads, rice,, crumbed chicken on honey marinade, little meatballs and fish, all accompanied with different types of exquisite middle eastern components that made every mouthful truly different and extremely tasty! The main was 12 hour slow roasted lamb and herbs accompanied by a dish that has escaped my memory (even though this was only last night!). Anyway, again, phenomenally tasty. And the shared dessert we had Turkish delight dumplings, vanilla panna cotta with crumbed chocolate, flowers and lemon sorbet and traditional turkish pastries with chocolate. Some of the elements like the Saffron foam, Chocolate fur, great infusions and flower beads would either pop flavor, or dissolve in your mouth. Shane Delia = Genius! Service was top notch too. I HIGHLY recommend this place. If you haven't been GET THERE, and make sure you do one of the sharing options (the 4 meals was ample for us).

Yelp
Okay, It's pricey, no doubt. Not for visiting on a regular basis. But WOW! What an experience. I took my partner here for her 30th, and did not expect to win so many browny points! Was recommended by a friend who has eaten here several time and simply raves about it. I can see why. An 8 course meal, with wine matching was my birthday present to my lady. It was sublime. Service was immaculate, food was well worth the price paid, and when I asked for gluten free they didn't even bat an eyelid. We had so much fun we were pretty much one of the earliest services but the last to leave. A real foodie experience that you simply must give a go. forget the $$$, you wont regret it I promise!!

Yelp
Extremely overpriced. Poor wine list -- good luck spending less than $100 for a bottle of red. A party of three left hungry (stupidly small servings) yet paid over $300 for the 'privilege'. Better Middle Eastern food is most assuredly found in the suburbs for far less. One word: pompous.

Yelp
Visiting Melbourne and looking for a Med restaurant. Found this on Yelp and decided to try it. Had one of the best lunches with a price fix menu ever. Pair with the wines and all was fantastic. Can recommend this place more highly. Beside fabulous Food, the the service and knowledge about the Food and wine were impressive

Yelp
Went to Maha for lunch yesterday - first time in a few months. It's been my favourite Melbourne lunchtime restaurant for a couple of years. The two course soufra was almost as good as ever - the fish was a little dry this time. The wine list is excellent, but the prices are out of kilter with the price of the food (i.e. you can't find a decent bottle of Pinot under $95). Great range of middle eastern beers.

Yelp
Tempted by the Turkish Delight and cheated out of more is how I feel about Maha Bar. Before you throw your hands up saying, "Woah, Lani, that's a bit out of line.", what I mean is: we came to Maha Bar for dessert only. "They have Turkish Delight donuts," our Melbourne-based friend and dining companion said. Our eyes lit up like children at Christmas. Luckily we were able to be seated in Maha Bar's lounge area and ordered our Turkish Delight donuts (5 fresh donut balls with a subtle but wonderfully sweet turkish delight centre) and their souffle with rosemary ice cream (YES, ROSEMARY ICE CREAM! And it was delicious and herbacous). All was exquisite and definitely easily shared. When it's this good you don't need a lot to savour the flavours. But as we got up to leave and I saw the diners in the main restaurant area I couldn't help but feel I'd been cheated out of a really great dinner as well. So, Maha Bar, I'll be back and this time I'm not just using you for your sweet sweet desserts!

Yelp
The food was really good and the staff were great. The cuisine was terrific with some imaginative combinations. Lovely cuisine and atmosphere. I highly recommend it. My only issue was we went for a work lunch with a set menu - which was terrific value, and you got to taste a wide variety of dishes. The set menu price included an alcoholic drink, but I don't drink, and no non-alcoholic beverage was offered in its place, which was weird, I thought, especially for a middle eastern restaurant. There was no reduction in the price either.

Yelp
Went there for company dinner, had no idea what it is all about, turns out to be such a surprise!!! To be honest I was never a fan of middle eastern meal but this place completely changed my mind. Regret so much that I didn't pay attention to the name of the dishes !! Will definitely bring my family back there. Only that this time need to pay out of own pocket --- remember it is a little pricy.

Yelp
We ate here in sept 2012. The ambience when you walk in sets the scene for what is truly a fantastic experience - incense burning and Turkish blown glass art just some of the surroundings. We went for the 6 course sultans menu - and went for the wine matching option. Not a cheap way to dine but it was a special occasion. (There was also the option of 'anything but wine' as a matched set of drinks that included beers, cocktails and spirits - looked like a pretty novel idea). Food:- the tasting menu is awesome. Whilst all tasting menus are there to push the boundaries this one was creative but not in any way gimmicky, annoying or over the top. It also is the right size (there is an 8 course option but I probably eat reasonably bloke sized portions and I was comfortably full after the 6 courses). Without going into too much detail every course draws on a (small) element of Turkish cuisine and the rest is just awesome food. For us the desert wasn't quite as impressive as the rest of the menu, however it was still pleasant and more than edible. Drinks:- there was a wide variety of wines that were well matched to the food. At times the menu pushed your boundaries by introducing the more unusual, such as the Japanese rice wine (a bit like watered down sake, which was surprisingly well matched!). We were particularly impressed with the dessert wine, a riesling from tasmania, as I'm often not a fan of the sweet, potentially cloying taste of dessert wines. Service:- the fact we barely noticed the service, yet everything arrived smoothly and with precision and explanation was most certainly a good thing. Our waiters had a bit of a jokey approach, which was welcoming and most importantly down to earth. This probably isn't a restaurant you would eat at everyday, but for a treat or celebration this place definitely fits the bill.
