"The first time you eat at Maison Kintaro, you’ll think something along the lines of: “How did I not know about this place?” With its bright, plant-filled dining room and '80s Japanese pop soundtrack, this low-key Chelsea restaurant is excessively charming, and it’s one of your best options for an impressive lunch or casual weeknight meal. Start with the onsen egg topped with crab and uni, then get the katsu sandwich or bowl of rice layered with thick Hokkaido scallops. Whatever you eat, you’ll make a mental note to come back soon." - Hannah Albertine, Bryan Kim, Neha Talreja, Carina Finn Koeppicus

"Surprisingly few people seem to know about Maison Kintaro. That'll probably change soon, so bring a friend or two after you check out some Chelsea galleries and dodge several hundred tourists on the High Line. Open for both lunch and dinner, Maison Kintaro serves Japanese items like chirashi, unagi don, and a crispy katsu sandwich on buttery toasted bread. This place is about as casual as a coffee shop, and the food is just as impressive as any old railway that was converted into a park." - Bryan Kim, Carina Finn Koeppicus

Food 7/10 Walked in easily, it was quite empty inside. The soft shell crab was quite good, and I really liked the sauce it came with. The oyster and scallop don was packed full of seafood, but the oysters tasted a bit weird to me. The scallops were great though. Atmosphere 8/10 Super cool interior, vibes. I remember there being green tones and nice modern decor. Service 8/10 Good service!

I loved the atmosphere so much! Quaint, peaceful, you-feel-you-are-in-Japan restaurant :) I ordered the katsu sando, pork cutlet sandwich, and it was really great and also a lot and very hefty! I was not hungry after for sure. They give little crackers on your table and it was so perfect. My waitress was very kind and friendly! She was great and made the experience the very best :)

Friendly service and good donburi options. I think there’s a lot of potential for authenticity especially with the fresh seafood, but the sushi rice was not prepared properly - too much vinegar and too warm, that it overpowered and altered the overall taste.

Delicious and artfully created food in a stylish setting with impeccable and friendly service. Menu is reasonably diverse with good choice of meat, seafood and vegetarian options. Everything we tried was perfectly cooked and super tasty. Liked the ambience and the service. It is now one of the favorite Japanese restaurants in NYC.

Suuuuchhh a sweet little place! Beautiful ambiance with cozy lighting and tasteful decor. A nice intimate spot for a date or night out with girlfriends when you want to talk about something slightly serious. The food was absolutely fabulous!! And very affordable for the area. Special highlights included the onsen tamago, beef+kabocha soup, and the cabbage steak. The vegetable pouch was nothing special and would give it a pass next time especially because it included lotus which wasn't mentioned in the description.

a cute place with standard japanese food. the curry was very mild and the breading on the fried chicken was very dry and bland. the gyoza were sooo good. flavorful and crispy. the onsen tamago was also really good. the nori salmon gohan was not what i expected (the salmon comes ground and mixed in with the rice) but was still good. a little dry though.

First time visiting this new Japanese restaurant in Chelsea. Very pleasant experience. Currently BYOB but I think you better check first. The chicken karaage was delicious and moist. The tofu and mushroom parcel was tasty but not something I’d order again. My tonkatsu was really good! Juicy and perfectly fried. Nice portion. Try he ikura don was a rather small portion though. Hope they fix this. The chicken teriyaki looked good and was enjoyed by our friend. I’ll be back!

Incredibly mid. For the prices you would expect much higher quality of food. All the cooked food was pretty good and we enjoyed it (I.e. tonkatsu/shisito peppers) But all the raw fish was inCREDIBLY fishy. Especially the scallops/mussel bowl?? so so so fishy The Chirashi bowl was so pricey and the quality was so sub par. (42$) You can get way better things elsewhere for less… with this kind of money you might as well get omakase ngl
