Where to Splurge on Seafood Towers in D.C.

"Thompson Hospitality’s DMV-wide American tavern, with locations at the Wharf, Reston, Arlington, and Cathedral Heights, cutely calls its seafood platter a “sea-cuterie” board. The underwater spread features a half-pound poached lobster tail, local oysters, jumbo shrimp, jumbo lump cocktail, warm butter, cocktail sauce, and champagne mignonette, all served on ice for a cool $90." - Claudia Rosenbaum, Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

18 Winter-Ready Cocktails to Try Right Now in D.C.

"Both of the Makers Union’s Reston and Wharf locations are holding a “Blitzen Bar!” pop-up until Christmas, featuring a wide variety of holiday-themed cocktails. Their “Old Man’s Leg Lamp” serves two guests, made with spiced rum, orgeat, raspberry, mint, ginger and lemon. Feeling indecisive? Pick an envelope at random to see whether you’ll get a “Naughty or Nice” cocktail. If you’re nice, your drink comes with vodka, melon liqueur, shimmer dust and cranberries. Those on the naughty list get to sip on tequila, activated charcoal, triple sec, and lime." - Vinciane Ngomsi, Kalina Newman

You can also give back by purchasing a meal for a family of four who cannot feed themselves. Before the big day, they’re also celebrating Friendsgiving from Nov. 18th – 22nd. Expect live music, family-style dinner and borrowing inspiration from Taylor Swift, friendship bracelet kits at each table." - Vinciane Ngomsi

Reston Gastropub Makers Union Makes a Big Splash in D.C., Starting With the Wharf - Eater DC

"Makers Union, Thompson Restaurants’ 4-year-old tavern in Reston, Virginia, busts out of the suburbs with a shiny new D.C. edition serving tomahawk dinners for two, “sea-cuterie” boards, and lots of brown liquors — plus a neon-lit reminder to “get nauti” in its Southwest Waterfront neighborhood. The all-day American restaurant’s second locale (664 Maine Avenue SW) sets up shop next to Milk & Honey, Thompson’s months-old destination for Southern comfort foods. The Reston-based, minority-owned hospitality group’s expansive portfolio also includes Hen Quarter, Matchbox, The Delegate, American Tap Room, and Wiseguy Pizza." - Tierney Plumb

Had a tasty meal here at the Wharf- Spinach artichoke deep was great as well as the calamari. All the other entrees tasted great but were extremelyyy heavy. Be aware that there aren’t really any lighter options on the menu here. The service was quick and friendly and we left very full.

Make sure you have your wallets when you walk in man lol. Visited this establishment in May for a friend’s birthday brunch. Prices for brunch + bottomless mimosas are pretty standard for the city. But another friend and I had a French 75 at the bar while we were waiting and.. $25 per drink is a bit egregious (to me). Not everything we had is pictured because our table was pretty long. Drinks are strong and food is somewhat decent. Our first batch of bacon looked good but the second batch was burnt and tasted like a candied burnt situation. I understand having all you can eat and small portions but the “crab cake” on the Benedict was really a crab ball. If you’re going to go that route, make the English muffin portion smaller. Deviled eggs and Mac & cheese needed seasoning. The nachos, spinach dip, and Brussels sprouts were really good. Ambiance was cool. It got a little weird when another customer was giving the manager the third degree on the middle of the floor.

My friends and I mainly went there for drinks, particularly the bottomless mimosas, and thoroughly enjoyed the watermelon mimosas. The other flavors were great as well, but after people tried the watermelon mimosa I had, everyone started following through. In terms of food, I enjoyed my Mediterranean bowl because it had the right ingredients, ranging from couscous to roasted red peppers to hummus to tzatziki to crispy pita strips. Every component complemented the other ones. It did slightly feel like everything was just placed together without much mixing, meaning the dish had less depth, but at least the ingredients were all correct. I had a bit of the steak & fries as well, and thought that the dish was overall too oily, which in turn made the broccolini very oily as well. One could argue it would make the broccolini taste better, and I wouldn't disagree with that. I just thought the amount of oil was too much. My friends around me overall had positive comments about their food, which I didn't end up trying. People were definitely more interested in the drinks, which was valid given it was brunch time. It was good to see that they offered an unlimited brunch option. Since neither my friends nor I was a big eater, we didn't pursue that option. It's still nice to have, though.

The food was good. Our server was very nice.. The location was easy to get to and located in a very well populated area. I got the spinach artichoke dip. My daughter got the steak and my husband got the fettuccine.

I had been craving a crab cake for days so I stopped by after work and was not disappointed. The crab cake was absolutely delicious and the fries were good as well. I had a few drinks and left very satisfied. The bartender who served me was also very nice and attentive. I didn't get a pic of the crab cake because I started digging in as soon as it was in front of me, lol. Would definitely recommend.

This was the best “consolation prize” dinner I’ve ever had. Hubby and I were originally going to Milk and Honey for my birthday dinner but we happened to travel to DC on the weekend that ALL the Deltas came to town 😁. We met many nice Deltas that weekend but they had basically reserved Milk and Honey for the whole night. When I shared with the pleasant hostess at M&H that I wanted to support a Black owned restaurant in the area, she recommended their sister business, Makers Union next door. It too was busy but they had some tables available so we took a chance. WOW WAS I GLAD! Most Black owned restaurants make Soul Food, which is my favorite but Makers Union has different fairs. I ordered Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Moroccan Style Impossible Skewers! Happy Birthday to me! Everything was DELICIOUS! Hubby had wings and fries which sounds kinda mundane but the fries were so good! Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. My Brussels sprouts were so beautifully seasoned with a sweet and tangy sauce. My Moroccan style skewer bowl had so many good tasting elements, mushrooms, rice, avocado... It was great! The service was also excellent. When my first bowl came out with an aioli that I am allergic to, they took it away and in a short time I had a new order. The server double checked on me and so did the manager. The chefs here are truly gifted and the serving size was enough for me to have a robust breakfasts the next day. They also gifted me a birthday dessert. Normally, I go for the chocolate thing but the bread pudding caught my eye. Once again, I was rewarded with a wonderful culinary experience. Hubby and I took a Lyft there. Parking seemed expensive. The indoor and outdoor decor are inviting and we had great benches to wait for our Lyft. We saw some nice Deltas leaving Milk and Honey and I secretly thanked them for pushing me to a different restaurant that I didn’t know existed. 😋

My partner and I went here on a whim. We have visited the area before, but never dined here. The restaurant is small, but doesn't feel too small because of the extremely high ceilings. We came during happy hour and ordered on the happy hour menu and the regular menu. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. We really enjoyed our drinks and food. We definitely were too hungry to take all of the pictures! On the happy hour menu we got a rail drink, pink lemonade with vodka and also tried the dirty martini. I would definitely come back for the atmosphere, food, and vibes. Definitely seems like an easy place to pop in after work to grab some good food. There is also a patio for people to sit with their four legged friends !
