The Best Steakhouses in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"Though it has a cozy European bistro feel, Headhouse Square’s Malbec is all Argentine steakhouse, right down to the Parrillada Argentina (grilled Angus short ribs, skirt steak, blood sausage, sweetbreads, and sides for two) plus a long list of red wines and sangria." - Annemarie Dooling

Malbec Argentine Steakhouse - Review - Society Hill - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Most steakhouses are somewhat intimidating - they’re overly fancy, they have high ceilings and lots of dark wood, and you wouldn’t want to spend a first date connecting with someone while you try to make sure your posture is at exactly 90 degrees. Malbec is the opposite. This small spot in Society Hill looks more like a French bistro than a steakhouse, and it’s more affordable than most of the other places on this list. In addition to a bunch of steaks (that are all under $50), they also have some great Argentinian specialties like empanadas and grilled beef chitterlings." - Sydney McElwee

The food was good but the service was mediocre. We waited more than 10 minutes for them to serve us(acknowledge), they took a long time to bring us the drinks, at the end I realized the reason for the sloppiness in the service since they automatically charge you 20% on tip; Which I don’t mind. we drove more than an hour to visit this restaurant. I repeat the drinks were great, the food was good but the service not what I expected from a mom & pop restaurant! I hope they improve their service.

I am so glad we are here. Our favorite was the appetizers. We had the bruschetta and the blood sausage. It was nostalgia to find a place that made sausage without potatoes. While it wasn't my grandma's recipe, it was delicious. The herb dip with the bread was full of flavor. Service was fantastic, and they brought us right in on a Friday at 7 even though we didn't have reservations. My son didn't care for his stake, it didn't quite look like the marbles ribeye we are used to, but mine was great. Patrice leches for dessert was to die for. The kind you want to lick the plate. We ordered their specialty drink, Tango. It was small but you didn't need more than one. We didn't feel rushed. It was a little spendy, but we were celebrating mother's Day and my son's birthday. I found the or chose the restaurant because the conference I'm in town for says show your badge and get 10% off. We forgot that part, but that's okay because we had a wonderful time.

We had a nice dinner at Malbec. It wasn’t the best Argentinian we’ve ever had but it was good. The service was somewhat slow but they apologized and the food came out hot and fresh. I recommend the ham & cheese empanada, and the chimmichuri was delicious!

Delicious, authentic, and unforgettable! The chocolate martini alone will have you saying, “keep them coming.” The asado is so good, it’ll make you want to book a flight to Argentina just to keep the weekend going. The shrimp with palmitos and salsa golf is a perfect balance of flavor, while the provoleta is so irresistible, you won’t want to wait for it to cool down. And don’t even get me started on the panqueques con dulce de leche — they’ll steal your heart at first bite!

Went for restaurant week this past Saturday. I get that they were busy but I ordered a medium rare steak off the 60 dollar menu and was sorely disappointed at how rare it was. There were a lot of white veins in so was hard to cut. Lots of fat on it as well. My friend ordered steak off the 40 dollar menu and that one turned out better than mine! The appetizers were good though. Server took a while to check on us but once he did, I was able to send the steak back. (even though ettiquette says not to do that) Steak came back lukewarm but at least it looked a bit closer to medium rare. The service was ok. My friends and I were here for 2 hours. We ordered our food right away and just spent most of the time chatting and waiting for food. I was close to running out to put money in the meter because we were still waiting for our check to come. I did tip the server 20 dollars/60. But I won't be coming back any time soon.

Google
First time experiencing restaurant week and I must say it did not disappoint!!! The restaurant immediately greeted me and sat us down exactly right at our reservation. The employees are really friendly. And the esthetic of the place was very nice alot of Argentina cultural designs .. the lunch menu was amazing. Beef empanadas freshly made so hot and very flavorful. We ordered the burger which was homemade and definitely sooo juicy with a nice brioche bun. Homemade fresh cut fries and lastly the dessert Tres Leche was amazing .. No complaints and highly recommended. Ohhh did I mentioned the cappuccino nicely presented and rich taste.

Malbec Argentine Steakhouse Review Malbec Argentine Steakhouse offers a calming ambience with a warm, inviting vibe that immediately puts you at ease. The seating areas have a unique appeal, and if you're planning to visit, I highly recommend arriving early to snag a window seat. The view adds a lovely touch to the dining experience, making it feel extra special. Upon sitting down, we were greeted with bread and butter, but this was no ordinary butter—it had a deliciously fresh flavor reminiscent of chimichurri sauce, adding a flavorful start to the meal. The menu is wonderfully crafted, offering a range of mouthwatering options. I opted for the Ojo de Bife, and let me tell you, it was a chef's kiss! A gracious portion of tender, perfectly cooked meat, where every bite felt like a little piece of heaven. My mother ordered the bacon filet mignon, and the smokiness from the bacon complemented the steak beautifully. Their dessert menu did not disappoint either. We tried the Budin de Pan and the Flan de Coco, both of which were an explosion of amazing flavors, leaving us completely satisfied. Malbec Argentine Steakhouse is a must-visit for steak lovers, and I will definitely be returning. Highly recommend!

Google
This boutique restaurant is awesome! I was loving the atmosphere! I was able to get a window seat and I loved it. For starters I ordered the skewers and shrimp and cheese empanada. The skewers was tasty but baby that empanada was the best I’ve ever had! I also ordered an espresso martini, I didn’t care for that too much or the lemon drop I ordered as well. It was bad but I’ve had way better. Now for my main course , I ordered the rib eye with garlic mash! I requested my steak to be cooked medium and baby it was one of the best steaks I’ve had! It was so tender and juicy! So much flavor! I’ll definitely return for their happy hour! Overall a good experience!!!!

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious The entraña was juicy and tender. The mollejas were new to me and I was impressed how delicious they were. I went Last Saturday and repeated on Sunday, that good it was. I'll be back this Sunday for Father's Day. Ah and the music they played was pop rock Latino from the 80-90s in Spanish. Loved it ! I'll share pics. Next time

Yelp
Came here for my boyfriend's birthday and it was the best experience ever. we had reservations for 7 PM, on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was not busy at all, and we were greeted right away as soon as we walked through the door. We were shown to our seats immediately, and the waitress came over very quickly. The vibe of this place was great, very calming and welcoming. She took our order and also gave us some recommendations. My boyfriend and I both ordered steaks and also an appetizer. Now the food here, props to the chef because it was the best meal that we had in Philadelphia by far. We love this place, and if we're ever back in Philadelphia, we will definitely be returning!

Yelp
My family took me here to celebrate my birthday. My daughter was delighted with how helpful and supportive the staff were while she was making the reservations. We were a party of 12. The service was fantastic and the food wonderful! I had the chicken a la champignon. So tender and flavorful. I also tasted my daughter's branzino. It was delicious. All the steak eaters enjoyed their meals. For dessert, I received a lovely tres leche cake and the table received dulce de leche crepes. So yummy! Highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Malbec Argentine Steakhouse From the moment you walk in the door, there is a warm inviting vibe. It is a small intimate place with a few tables and a bar in the center. I stopped by for the Center City Restaurant Week brunch. They had a great selection of items to pick from on their 3 course Prix Fixe brunch menu. I sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. I started with the Spinach & cheese empanada with a mimosa. The empanada was crunchy, super flavorful with a nice cheese pull. For the 2nd course, I had the Egg White Veggie Omelette. It was loaded with a ton of tasty veggies. It also came with Home Fries and toasted bread. The final course was Tres Leches. The cake was so moist and just melts in your mouth. I'm definitely going back to try some different items in the future.

Yelp
I have to say it's a little bit expensive, but the food and environment are great. The service is very good too.

Yelp
Came here for restaurant week and tried their dinner menu. The food was great. Apps: The beef empanada was , 10/10 get it. The Chorizo was OK, a tad dry. Main Course: Double downed in steak, it was solid. Not your American steakhouse steaks with a nice char, but still packed with flavor. Throw some of that chimichurri sauce ontop and you got yourself a nice flavor filled combo Dessert: Really good tres leches and bread pudding. I can't say anything bad about both of these.

Yelp
Visited Malbec for brunch during Restaurant Week! My reservation was for 1pm which is opening time. There was about 4 people already dining at 1pm. I ordered a pitcher of red Sangria and the brunch restaurant week menu. Our sever was really slow but maybe because they just opened. The food was good and the Sangria was okay. The tres leche cake was delicious!

Yelp
Everything was delicious. The drinks were great, the steak was amazing. Helpful and friendly staff!

Yelp
I went here for restaurant week for the first time and it did not disappoint. I got the spinach and mozzarella empanadas, the estraña steak and tres leches cake all on the $40 menu. Everything was delicious and I will be going back! The service was really good and I loved the ambiance it was dimly lit with a candle, really great for date night.

Yelp
First time trying Argentinian food & it was great! Delicious & very flavorful. I can't wait to go back! I wish I had taken pics. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
Overall, the quality was very good. The food was excellent! The ambiance is very nice. The service was good also, except for the bartender. After dinner, we ordered a chocolate and an espresso martini from the dessert menu. The drinks tasted very good, but the quantity was not up to par. We made a concern to our waitress who passed it along to the bartender. The bartender approached our table and said, "I heard you have a problem with the drinks?" We explained that the drinks were very good, but for the high price we would have expected the glass to be more full. The glass was only about 60 percent full for the chocolate martini, and only about half full for the espresso martini. The bartender went on to give a long, pretentious explanation regarding his specs that he created for his drinks and that they were created before the martini glasses were purchased. We didn't understand his explanation. The glasses were normal sized and are usually full in other restaurants when we order them. He didn't seem to care that we thought the quantity wasn't normal, especially for the $17 price. We weren't looking for anything for free, but the way that the bartender approached us regarding our concern was not very professional. He seemed to take our critique personally when the quantity of the drink was clearly not acceptable. We weren't offered to speak to a manager and didn't press the issue any further. I enjoyed the meal, but we won't be returning and spending money at this restaurant, considering the prices and our interaction with the bartender.

Yelp
I'll start with the waitress charging $40 rather than $29 for happy hour bottle of wine. This wine was not good; an Argentina Sauvignon Blanc. I got a Salmon tare tare that was delicious. Four of us got the burger that for some reason was rubbery, but you had to remove about the worst Tomato that could be grown. It was truly disgusting. The meat tasted good, but why was it rubbery. It was cooked medium as requested. This is a nice place but nearly empty on a Friday, with a 3hr. happy hour. The Twisted Tale down the street was packed like never before. I want to like Malbec, but how could they make a gruesome mistake with the awful tomato, and rubbery meat for a hamburger. Fyi, the Merlot wine by the glass was very good.

Yelp
I found this restaurant doing some research. I was looking for a good steakhouse with a decent happy hour. This restaurant not only had an amazing happy hour, but they also had good deals in terms of meals. The location was a decent size. That have indoor/outdoor table seating...as well as bar seating. I came around 6pm. I sat at the bar. Depending on what you ordered, the happy hour drinks were no more than seven dollars. I got a few glasses of wine. There was also food available on the happy hour menu. I ordered two chicken empanadas. They were big enough for me and my date to have one to ourselves. Besides the happy hour drinks. I did also order margaritas. They were strong and delicious. They did not have that artificial flavoring taste. For my meal, I had a porterhouse steak with a side of mashed potatoes and broccoli. The steak was 24 ounces and it was big enough for me and my date to share. We asked for the steak medium well done and it was cooked just that way. The steak was seasoned perfectly. I'm not the biggest fan of grilled steaks.... I am more of a pan seared girl..... however, this steak was more than delicious. The mashed potatoes were also hot and seasoned very well....the broccoli too. The staff member at the bar was very attentive. He did check up on us frequently. He was the one making the drinks and we did tell him the drinks were amazing. I would definitely come back for happy hour and just for a delicious meal overall. I was more than surprised and satisfied.

Yelp
Great customer service. Cozy ambience and good food. Empanadas are delicious! Asado for 2 is well assorted. The chicken and meat milanese ate out of this world. The dressing for the house salad is homemade. Dessert call me !

Yelp
I still can't believe I found this place in Philadelphia, what an amazing found! This is a real Argentinian house, the owner came to say hi and recommended the best Argentinian Wine, the chimichurri made in house was made to perfection, the steak perfectly cooked! The ambience was everything I was looking for. They took really good care of us, service was great! Thank you for a great time!

Yelp
I had a wonderful time at Malbec Argentine Steakhouse. We sat outside on a lovely evening during Center City Restaurant Week 2022. From beginning to the very end, the experience was exquisite and absolutely pleasant. Our servers (one was being trained) were a delight. They were attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was DELICIOUS! The empanadas were soft and very flavorful, the skirt steak was juicy and cooked to my taste and the flan was creamy. The chimichurri is EVERYTHING! I definitely recommend for anyone looking for a good steak or anyone wishing to try new flavors.

Yelp
5 stars in every aspect. Delicious food, friendly staff, cute ambiance, good service. We had a reservation for a Saturday night and got seated right away. It's a small place in a cute part of town, good vibes all around. We ordered the big dish of all the meats to share for 2 people and it was perfect. No issues with my allergies at all (dairy, peanuts). The meats were tender and flavorful. The drinks were a perfect pair. Honestly, no complaints at all. **HIGHLY recommend the empanadas

Yelp
Malbec was my first Philly restaurant week experience and I was a little disappointed in this restaurant. I do not think it was worth the restaurant week price. I got the beef empanada as an appetizer, which had good texture - but the flavor of the actual empanada wasn't anything special. The skirt steak also did not stand out and was slightly overcooked. Dessert was a standard tres leches that could easily be made at home or bought at a grocery store. For those thinking of coming here for restaurant week, I would recommend going to a different restaurant with more options. This restaurant may be better with their full menu.
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Malbec is a gem! The location is great and close to old city and the space is nice, roomy and comfortable with outdoor seating. I went during restaurant week and I was not disappointed! This is one of the best steakhouses in Philly if not the best! The steak was so tender and juicy and cooked to perfection but the simple seasoning gives it another layer of sophistication. The empanadas are so crunchy and when you bite into them a huge burst of flavor explodes! The flan is so unique and delicious. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. Definitely a must go to as a regular.

Yelp
I had to send the bill back three times as they kept overcharging me. I was patient and polite each time and they never apologized. Be sure to keep a CLOSE eye on your bill and compare the prices to the menu and surrounding signs. These people enjoy overcharging people and the food is just okay. Take photos of what you order to compare to your bill when it arrives. The food was just okay. I can prepare better a home- even the chimmichuri i can prepare better in my sleep. Then again, I'm from Argentina.

Jim H.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent. We really enjoyed the atmosphere that was relaxed and comfortable. Perfect for stopping in for a drink at the bar and or grabbing dinner at a table.

Yelp
Everything! Food is great and the service was good also. The place is very nice and cozy.

Jaime F.

Yelp
Went for Happy Hour. Drinks were good and reasonable. Empanada was good. Mussels were good. Ambiance was good. Do not order the grilled brochette. For $10 you get a tiny skewer of vegetables. The taste was mediocre at best. Complete waste of $10.

Yelp
Stopped in for a light dinner. Had a caprese and their bread and chimichuri. Outstanding. Service was too notice, very sweet and d helpful. Just a fun place with great staff and food. Recommend.

Yelp
My boyfriend surprised me with reservations here on my birthday. The lighting an atmosphere in the restaurant was very romantic. We had reservations on a Thursday, which we did not know was Tango Night with a live performance! Our waitress was great, She answered all of our questions when it came to the menu. The food was amazing. We had fried calamari, filet mignon, Lobster tail garlic mashed potatoes, with mushrooms and onions in a fig sauce, which was delicious. I also enjoyed a Creamy flan for my dessert. I had a beautiful experience and will definitely be coming back again!

Yelp
So here we go. I like to test taste a wine before committing to a glass. So I tasted the Pinot Noir hmmm, then the Merlot, too sweet, the Cabernet was really vinegary. The bartender tasted it and agreed it was vinegar. So he was going to open a new bottle but....all of a sudden they only have more expensive bottles of Cabernet and there are no glasses of Cabernet available. In other words, I would have to buy a more expensive bottle of wine just to enjoy a glass of Cabernet with my meal. Say what now‍. This is not my problem. A customer oriented restaurant would've opened a more expensive bottle of Cabernet and charged me the same price that is listed on their menu for a glass. Anyway I ended up with a 5 oz pour of Malbec. We ordered Parrillada Argentina para 2. This dish use to come out sizzling, ours did not. The skirt steak, blood sausage, rice & salad were good. The sweetbreads & short ribs a little on the fatty side, maybe to be expected. The dish seems to be a little bit more scarce then it use to be in the past and more expensive, like everything these days. They only provide a very small slice of lime, They use to give half a lime or at least 2 slices. I guess we could've asked for more. The chimi-churri was very oily. This restaurant now provides all sides like ketchup, chimi-churri, salad dressing in plastic ramekins, in the past they were stainless steel, slightly more classy. We also ordered an appetizer, a beef empanada, it was good. That's about all I have to say here.
google avatar

Jinsol L.

Yelp
Solid happy hour option, with options for delicious empanadas and a satisfactory burger. For a HH in the city, Malbec has an uncommonly spacious area, so you don't have to worry about standing in line for hours or being squeezed into some corner - truly a luxury. Additionally, their HH runs Tues-Fri from 4-7pm, which accrues more brownie points in my book considering how most other HHs end much earlier. The menu offers a reasonable price point, with sangrias and selected house mix drinks at $5-6. While I am unable to speak to their regular menu, Malbec's often on my mind for a reliable happy hour.

Karen L.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our dinner. Great intimate restaurant located in what was the old Philadelphia water front. Lots of historical brick buildings and streets. Both Food and Service was very good on a busy Saturday night during Philly Restaurant week . 2 parking garages just around the corner. If parking on the street be well aware of your parking meter. We did see many cars being towed.

Yelp
Had dinner here during restaurant week. Great wine and steak and yummy empanadas. They have outside seating with heat lamps.

Yelp
Our meal today was great, nice ambiance and friendly staff. We also enjoyed our drinks and are excited to come back. Thank you!

Yelp
This was by far the worst experiencing I had dining in Philadelphia by far. The food at the HUP cafeteria is better and that is saying a lot. The empanada was good but you only one The chorizo was also ok. We got the Milanesa He didn't offer any topping for it. I got the chicken Milanesa. The chicken was so fatty. I kept cutting from different parts thinking it wouldn't be fatty. I was wrong. I mentioned it to the server, he said it's not supposed to be like that but didn't try to make it right. I just sat there and drank my wine. Anywhere else would have comped at least half my meal that I couldn't eat. Then they add a 20% gratuity for a party of 2? Really? He couldn't even tell me about the wine when I asked. All he said was that's one's a blend the other isn't. I knew that by reading the menu. Stay far away if you want a decent meal and knowledgeable server. A complete lack of customer service and I am going home hungry . Who charges an automatic gratuity on a party of 2? I am only giving it 2 stars because we were seated quickly and the empanadas were good. I won't be back

Yelp
The food was great and the ambiance. Our waiter was very attentive. I will definitely be back.

Matt C.

Yelp
This was a great restaurant where we tried different tapas like food. Everything that we tried was excellent. We split one of the meat plates as well as several of the other appetizers. The ambience is great and felt very much like a family run operation. Highly recommend for date night or business meal.
google avatar

Shanel S.

Yelp
Per fiancée their steak is better than Alpen Rose. They were good.. 5 stars but idk, Alpen is just it for me. Service was excellent, seated quickly. Seemingly small restaurant in a O or U shape that actually is bigger than it looks. This is perfect for a date night. Cozy dimly lit with heavy pour drinks and perfectly seasoned and grilled steaks. The branzino is what I had and so tender and perfectly cooked. Melt in your mouth with very little fishy taste. That is the sign of a fresh fish. Def going back, definitely and making sure to bring others.
google avatar

H. P.

Yelp
Very disappointing. The gnocchi was a child sized portion and the steak was a slab of meat on a plate with a small piece of rosemary. Had to go Lorenzo's Pizza for a mega slice after dinner. Beer selection was very limited. There was no one there on a Friday and they sat us at a narrow table next to the bar. Guess eating gnocchi on the 29th of the month wasn't lucky for us.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
We came for restaurant week and got to test most of the menu since we were a large group. We sat outside in the street, nice atmosphere, busy on a week night but not noisy. The staff were all very nice and we weren't the only group to have a young child with us (high chair, plastic cup and plastic utensils all offered!) The steak was the star of the show of course. So beautifully done. We didn't really care for the steak Milanesa, but that could just be according to preference. My favorite empanadas were the spinach and mozzarella, and the chorizo appetizer was tasty too. The dessert wasn't anything special. I preferred the flan, although it didn't have strong flavor, over the tres leches cake which had a bit too much icing and the cake itself reminded my MIL of cornbread because of the consistency. I would go back for the steak.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
I came here for the 2nd time on Friday night & I was not disappointed. We ordered the menu item for 2 people that included steaks, sausages, and two sides. The sausages were dry, but the steaks were SO good. Definitely one of my favorite restaurant steaks in Philly. Their drinks were also great. My boyfriend got the breaded chicken with fried egg and that one is also absolutely delicious. I believe they also have happy hour which I'm definitely going to come back to try. Try it out! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I'm definitely coming back to try more stuff. My server Fernando was a cool guy, on point and friendly. I had the Margarita with mezcal, I prefer it with mezcal! The bread given was good, Got the Melon Y Prosciutto. The saltiness of the prosciutto and sweetness of the melon balls made a good combo. It had drizzles of balsamic vinegar and honey I think and loved it. The Beef empanadas were good, I really enjoyed it My little cousin got the Paella De Mariscos. The portion of seafood was great and the rice was a good texture with all the good seafood flavors. I got the Bife De Chorizo. Got it medium rare with mash potatoes and oion and mushrooms. It was good I can't complain, steak was tender and not over cooked. Next time I'm getting the Parrilada Agrentina!

Emily D.

Yelp
Skirt steak, empanadas and drinks were delicious! The chimmichurri added such great flavor as well!

Yelp
Have came here on multiple occasions - today was like every other....food was delicious, drinks were on point. Unlike the other times, we came during happy hour today and enjoyed authentic Argentine Empanadas. By far the best ones I have had in Philly. We got: - 1 spinach and cheese - 1 ham and cheese - 1 beef - Malbec wine -coconut Mojito So good, so good, so good. Thanks! Will be back!

Lilly B.

Yelp
This is my first time dining at Malbec and I went during restaurant week. I enjoyed their options and was happy that there was a fish on the menu! All the food was really good! The calamari was a very small portion but came with two delicious sauces. One a bit spicy, the other a marinara sauce. The empanada was flavorful but the olives gave it a different taste. The skirt steak was cooked well and the salmon was delicious! The salmon came with sautéed greens that were better than expected! The mashed potatoes were good but over done with garlic. The tres leches cake was the award winner! So so good! Honestly the big downfall was service. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful but during restaurant week having a three-course meal is usually done in a timely manner. There was at least 45 minutes between every course which was way too long for me! The bathroom is also the size of a closet so if you are claustrophobic be mindful coming here and using the bathroom!

Yelp

Yelp
We had an absolutely delicious meal and experience here. We came with our Argentinian au pair for her birthday and were all blown away! The bread and chimichurri to start were fresh and delicious. We got empanadas as an appetizer (beef and the ham)- the dough was spongy and amazing. For dinner, we got the meat platter for two, bacon wrapped filet (special), and the ribeye. Everyone raved from start to finish. We went with a Malbec red wine and Negroni, both which were delicious. We finished with dolce de leche crepes and the flan, also good. The staff was overall very attentive and kind. Thank you for a memorable night!

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Sat outside. Food was great as well. Unique environment in the heart of old Philly.

Yelp
Great experience! This is a small and cozy place that serves delicious food and cocktails - loved the Sangria! Our server was really sweet and when I forgot to take back my card, the poor guy chased us for two blocks to return it. If you are a meat lover, you have to come here - the steaks here are amazing and so flavorful!

This is a very intimate restaurant in the historic Philly. For starters, we tried beef and chicken empanadas. We loved their dough. The ratio of dough to filling was great. We loved the flavor very much. Our favorite was chicken. For entrees, we shared Parrillada Argentina. It was a lot and a great value. Their chorizo was to die for, so much flavors packed in the sausage. I was not a big fan of the blood sausages due to texture. I don't like it mushy. I used to Asian blood sausages where it felts like firm tofu. The biggest surprise was the sweetbread. They sliced and grilled it making it taste more like thinly sliced meat. My boyfriend who thought he didn't like sweetbread due to past experiences found it tasty. It's definitely an acquired taste. Additionally, the owners and staff were very friendly and nice. It was just a great experience to have. Definitely will go back if we ever are in town.

Yelp
I recently came to Malbec on a Friday night for date night. As always with downtown locations seriously consider whether you want to drive or pay for parking. The closest lot was 25 dollars for the night. No hourly rate. Malbec is a located right on the corner and not hard to find. The decor is sort of old school steak house. Although we sat at a table I saw some booths that were decorated with pillows and decorative cushions. The restaurant is small. Our table was sat in a walk through aisle really close to the bar. I had a fear that someone would walk by and knock something off the table. The atmosphere was loud. I take into consideration that it was a Friday night but the fact that our table sat next to the bar probably didn't help. We order beef empanada, shrimp bruschetta, filet, skirt steak, salad, crepes and tres Leche. The empanada was delicious. The flavor of the beef was really good and the pastry was flaky and crisp. The shrimp bruschetta was okay. There was so much piled on two pieces of toast. It was a little cumbersome to eat. The entries of skirt steak, and filet were a little lackluster and pricey for what they were. While the skirt steak had okay flavor it did not have a lot of chimichuri on top, which was the main flavor component. My date ordered the filet. While he said the flavor was good, he mention that it was not very hot. We could not decide if it this was because he order or medium rare. Our sides were all fine and I really enjoyed the dressing for the house salad. As for dessert the tres leche was creamy and good and the crepes were very sweet but had great dulce de leche flavor. I gave 3 stars because I thought the food was just okay. The $144 bill did not match the quality of experience that I had here. I'm not sure that I would rush to come back.

Yelp
Excellent Ambiance, and excellent food, definitely would recommend friend go there. The restaurant is located in old city in Philadelphia, and it is nice to have a nice dinner here after hanging around in old city with family and friend
