The 18 Best Fried Chicken Sandwiches In The Bay Area

"Catered To You is a takeout window in Uptown Oakland that focuses on grilled and fried chicken, beef, and fish. We love coming here for their fried chicken sandwich (technically, it’s a fried chicken tender sandwich). The chicken is doused in a sweet BBQ sauce (a welcome change from aioli), and is finished with crisp lettuce, red onion, and tomato. The hours can change, so plan ahead by checking out their Facebook." - julia chen 1, lani conway

Here’s Everything Keith Lee’s Eaten in the San Francisco Bay Area So Far - Eater SF

"For his third stop in the Bay Area, Lee and his family headed to Mama T's, a small spot owned by Teena Johnson in downtown Oakland. Lee spent a total of $35.65 on four items, including the restaurant’s signature offering. “This is what they’re known for, the famous fish sandwich,” Lee says, holding up a fried fish sandwich with ketchup, tomato, lettuce, and mayo on a buttered bun. “In my opinion, it’s not bad but this crust is extremely thick,” Lee says after taking a bite, adding that the strong grease flavor of the fish earned the sandwich a respectable 7.5/10. A side of seasoned fries fared better than the fries from San Francisco’s Double Decker; though he suspected these were “freezer fries,” the ample seasoning boosted them to 5/10. Mama T’s grilled chicken sandwich fared even better than the more famous menu offering. Lee gave the chicken sandwich a solid 8.5/10 in part because there was lots of juicy chicken and a “nice, sweet, tangy barbecue sauce.” But the real standout item was the homemade potato salad. “That’s the best thing I’ve had since I’ve been here,” Lee says after using a fry to scoop us some of the “pickle-forward” salad, which he grants a score of 8.7/10." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Fast / casual eatery - everything is made to order. I had to wait 12 minutes after paying for a fish basket; another customer had ordered food just ahead of me, which could explain some of the wait time. Mama T. stated 75% of her sales are their famous fish sandwich. Even though I ordered just after 4pm, they had run out of buns so I was unable to try it. The farm raised Basa fish was crispy on the outside, yet hot and tender on the inside. The portion was plentiful. Thick Fries had a light seasoning added to them. To help keep the order warm, pieces of paper were placed on the top and bottom of the cardboard basket containing my order; the food was then put in a plastic bag for takeout. The only place you can eat your order onsite is on the shelf / barstools out front. As far as I can tell, there is no restroom available for customers.

Google
First time eating the infamous Mama T’s and I was not disappointed. The food was seasoned well, nice portions, but the fish was fried a little too hard for my taste. Paid a little over $30 for two fish sandwiches with fries.

Google
Mama T’s Oakland is a hidden gem! It may be small in size, but it’s big on flavor with portion sizes that won’t leave you hungry. The prices are affordable, and the Basa fish is absolutely delicious! The charm of this place is matched by the warmth of the owner, Mama T, who treats every customer like family. Definitely my new go-to spot.

Google
Walked down to this little spot from our hotel feeling hungry and Mama T delivered. The Famous Fish Sandwich (pictured) is easily my new favorite fish sandwich. My boyfriend got the Famous Chicken and we just can’t decide which is better. Will be returning next time we are in town!

Google
Mama T’s cookin’ is a gift✨ her prices are right, and the energy is always love. She cooks to order, it’s always fresh. Get the little sweet potato pie she makes… So good and my fav is the fish sandwich. It’s worth every penny.

Google
Tiny little shop that specializes in quick bites like burgers, sandwiches, and fried foods. I keep coming back for the "Famous Fish Sandwich" - a crispy southern-style fried fish filet battered with cornmeal. The sandwiches have always been made fresh, and the prices are very good compared to other shops within the area.

Google
The fish was so good I almost shed a tear! I had to close my eyes and eat this sandwich... IYKYK. Best fish I've ever had, I can tell it was cooked with love

Google

Yelp
Love this place! It's small but you can't miss it! It's a walk-up restaurant about a block away from the Paramount Theatre. I'm always greeted the door and my order is fresh, made to order. The fish sandwich with potato salad is my go-to. I highly recommend when in Oakland.

Yelp
Great tasting fish sandwiches. Perfectly seasoned both fish and fries. Good things come to those that wait so be prepared.

Yelp
Only reason this business doesn't get a 5 star from me isn't because of the food. The food is AMAZING!!!! Fresh, seasoned to perfection, literally mouth watering and i will be coming back. I wish the customer service was better. Not very friendly until they warm up to you. I wish they could hire someone at the front to deal with customers because that would make this business OUTSTANDING! Overall had a great experience food wise but i pray they get the other part together. Thanks

Yelp
We came during the afternoon break and did have to wait till 3pm to order. The restaurant is pretty small with a couple seats outside, but the logo is easy to notice as you're walking down the block. It took about 10 minutes for our food to come out. We decided to try the famous fish sandwich which also comes with a generous portion of seasoned fries. For the price of $13, this was definitely worth it! The fish itself has a delicious outer crust (corn meal?) that reminds me of fried food in the South and is not dried out at all. The flavors are amazing and the fries were nicely seasoned, hot and crispy. Everything came out fresh to order. I highly recommend coming here and trying Mama T's delicious food!

Yelp
This place deserves to be a tourist hotspot based upon food quality and reheatability alone. I am from out of town but grew up on soul food so this was truly within my palette. We picked up our catfish sandwich, chicken sandwich, and hot link 4 hours before actually consuming them and oh my god?!? The crispiness was still intact, the flavor was incredible, and the food wasn't dry/tough despite all of the steam for the amount of time. I will 100% be returning before I go back to SoCal. Don't forget to get the caramel banana pudding (don't be scared, it's not super sweet, but the perfect ending to a fantastic meal).

Yelp
This is a spot that sadly, I missed for the last several years that I've been in the Bay Area. I patronize this area often and had no idea it was on the same block as Make Westing. They've been here far longer than I've lived here, but I found out about it when a documentary for Too Short was being filmed in the downtown-ish area between Telegraph and San Pablo ave. It was on the news regarding the filming and I had to try. It's a small, to go spot. The fish sandwich is full of flavor. It can easily be described as cajun spice and everything nice. It's actually been a while since I've visited but I definitely remember it's good and I'd go back. I do think they close early though - maybe around 4:00pm.

Yelp
Seasoned. The word is seasoned. I rolled by over here and I noticed that I did see her on TikTok/Instagram so on my way back home I decided to have some lunch there. I came for one thing and one thing only and it was the famous fish sandwich with fries took about 15 minutes I went home And i devoured that sandwich I love that they use cornmeal and it seasoned I'm not 100% sure what kind of fish it was but it wasn't dry. I got mine with everything so everything tasted fresh and it was seasoned. The fries were seasoned. Lovely customer service.

Yelp
My granddaughter suggested this place to me after we finished up at VA Oakland. I was so hungry. I got me a sandwich. Fish sandwich. It was phenomenal. Service was extremely friendly and courteous as well as prompt and quick. Fries were delicious. Hot and fresh. Everything was tasty. Seasoned to perfection. Delicious.

Yelp
So... gave Mama T's another try but arrived when she opened this time. Everything was perfection! Better experience 2nd time. The fish sandwich is obsessive!

Yelp
OMG! The Famous Fish Sandwich reminds you of the ones from back in the day at the Black Muslim Bakery. If you know, you know!! Definitely run, don't walk to Mama T's, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
The place is small, metered parking and it's limited. You must order to go, there's no seating. The service was good, maybe son and mom/aunt they were nice, greeted us right away and was patient with us being that it was our first time here. We ordered the chicken famous fish sandwich that came with Cajun seasoned fries and a can soda, we paid about $37 for two meals. The fish sandwich was DELICIOUS and the fries were good and different!!! 10 out of 10 definitely recommend!!! The wait wasn't long about 15 mins but that fish sandwich was super good flavor nice crunch go get you one!!! Oh and Black owned!!!

Yelp
So glad we happened to be getting drinks at EBXO (Everything But Hugs N Kisses) right next door to this place. It's a small kitchen packing up some heat! Affordable too! Their fish sandwich is bomb and hella generous. Fish is thick and moist. The potato salad (it was a special that day) was bursting with flavor. Maybe a little too much pickle or dill flavor but still hella good. Me and my friend halved a sando and immediately regretted not having our own afterwards. LOL! Had to order another one to take home too. We'll definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Kourtney B.

Yelp
Just tried the fish sandwich. Absolutely delicious and I will definitely be back soon. The wait was about 15 minutes so I waited in the car for it to be prepared before returning to pick it up. Pro Tip: The interior of the restaurant is small, so I think most people who do not work in the area will have to wait elsewhere for the food to be prepared.

Yelp
ORDER THE PARTY WINGS!! NOW! I would recommend this place. Cute small locally owned business on Telegraph with a simple menu. I got two orders of the fish sandwich with potato salad on the side, one order of party wings with fries on the side, and a hotlink with a salad. Wings were /10, best wings i've ever consumed. They were battered and fried and the buffalo sauce came on the side. Fish sandwiches were great and the HOT link was yummy and spicy, fries were alright and I really didn't like the potato salad. We weren't given the salad. We arrived at 2:25 pm and when I went in to the open-doored restaurant the workers told me they'd be on break until 3. I arrive at 3, walk in and get told they are on break until 3:15 and the door was closed and locked behind me. I queued in line with 7 people until 3:30 when I ordered, my food took about 30 minutes to make. ‍ The wait time for food was reasonable for the orders ahead of me and my order size. I found the unclear timing annoying, but I had time to wait and the food made up for it. When I ordered and picked up my food, I was graciously thanked for waiting, the hospitality is great! Definitely come here! Just know it might not be a grab and go experience

Yelp
The best fish sandwich in Oakland food portions, very large and great hospitality I couldn't even finish my food.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service. It's primarily a take out place but worth the trip. The portions a good and plenty.I enjoyed the fiah platter and the guys said the pulled pork sandwiches were delicious.

Yelp
Mama T's is Catered to You rebranded after a brief closure. haven't been here about a decade. menu looks similar, pricing higher due to higher taxes, higher food costs. catfish instead of basa available on fridays. offerings: burgers, fried fish, chicken wings, strips, tenders. sandwiches. eats: chicken strips (11) with potato salad, tax included in price. -big pieces of slightly moist chicken meat -organic bbq sauce had nice flavor, no aftertaste, no excess sugar, etc. YUM! -potato salad was unique with large & small pieces of potato, celery bits, slight spiciness, mayo, with no excess saltiness, flavors. 4.5 stars

Mary T.

Yelp
Love the food and all the choices of menus will definitely return . My family celebrated a milestone at Mamies and we will make this one of our frequent stops in Oakland.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Mama T's does what needs to be done! A reliable go to spot for fried catfish and chicken wings. I'm still exploring the area but this is one of the more consistent spots for soul food
google avatar

Devin W.

Yelp
Mama T's is a gem! It's a delicious and quick way to grab a bite. She cared about my first experience and wanted to make sure that I liked it so that I could return. Well, I'll be back for sure because everything was top tier fresh!
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
The Fish Sandwich is Excellent ! Comes with crispy fries! I also got the Carmel Banana Pudding ! Can't wait to go back again! Thank you Momma T ....
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
I visited here for lunch and standing up for more than 30+ minutes, Mama T filled about 5orders who came after me before my order was filled. What was disappointing was the cook in the back told her to fill this women (my) ordered she's been her to long. But her remark was "well she can wait a little while longer, I'm doing the best I can." I finally got my order and ended up throwing it in the trash.
google avatar

Raquel T.

Yelp
Her food is delicious, she can make a mean fish burger that makes your eyes roll into the back of your head! This is my 4th time here and I've never been disappointed except when it's all gone... ;)
google avatar

Kateryn R.

Yelp
I pre ordered the Famous Fish Sandwich (Basa Fish) with a potato salad side for 12:05 pm pick up time. I got to Mama T's on time and no wait and my order was freshly made. The portion of the sandwich and salad was a good size! The taste was so good! I was more than happy with my meal today! I'm glad I tried Mama T's.
google avatar

Yelp
Last week I went to Mama T's in Oakland. I order two best of both worlds sandwiches. The best of both worlds sandwich has fried fish and grilled chicken sandwich. The sandwiches were phenomenal and very flavorful. The fish was fried perfectly and chicken is grilled to perfection. The fish and chicken combination went well together. Customer service was great and the ambiance was great. I will be back soon.
google avatar

Ryen-amirah R.

Yelp
After hearing so much about the fish sandwiches here, I had to try it for myself. While there was a bit of wait after I was able to order our food I can say it was well worth the wait. There was enough fish on my sandwich to make two. The seasoning on the fries was a nice compliment, so I will definitely be back to try the fish salad.
google avatar

Franchesca S.

Yelp
Sandwich was really good. Big piece of fish. Tastes great! Would definitely return for another fish sandwich.

Yelp
You know those places that you always seem to end up going back to, this is one of those places for me. Located in downtown Oakland, near The Fox and the Paramont, this is my go to place for a yummy meal on the run. It's a walk up and she does take credit cards. There's a couple of bistro tables in front on the sidewalk but the smells on the sidewalk can at times (like today) be on the unpleasant side. It's a busy area with lots of folks roaming around so I've never felt unsafe but keep up your guard just in case. I always get the best of both worlds because I can never decide if I want the fish or the chicken. It's HUGE so the hubs and I share.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
Delicious food for your soul. Mama T is an example of why Oakland is so special and why so many of us call it home. The food is good and worth the wait. The convos that take place are genuine. The fish sandwich is the best and I've had some amazing ones!
google avatar

Marlina L.

Yelp
I had to visit Mama T's because I was craving fried fish. Thank you to Jenna T., a fellow Yelper. Let's begin with the portions, which are generous. Don't you hate unseasoned fries? I typically have to add my creole seasoning, but not here. They've got that covered. The fish sandwich was BOMB.com! The combination of the sandwich's toppings and perfectly fried fish form a perfect balance. Did I mention that everything is made to order and is fresh? The woman who was assisting me had a contagious smile :).
google avatar

Semaj E.

Yelp
The last words, the sweet owner said to me is YOU'LL BE BACK. She was right I'm already thinking about my next visit this hands-down was the best fish sandwich I ever had. The fish was perfectly seasoned, the bun was nice and soft, the vegetables fresh & crisp. She deserves more than five stars. Thank you so much. see ya soon : ) I wish SoulBeat was around she need a commercial like NOW.

Yelp
I hate to write this review but Ima share my past experiences: I been comin here for years and I mean literally YEARS. Always get a fish sandwich I pay leave a good tip and go about my business. On one occasion I tried to order I was told there was a break give them 20 mins ok no worries. I come back 45mins later they're closin I didn't get upset or anything I said thank u and left Another occasion I got yelled at literally for no apparent reason like as if I did something to someone and didn't end up gettin any food. Idk if they were upset at the previous person who ordered or was just completely done for the day but I didn't deserve that. I still said ok thank u and left Another occasion the daughter was there she took my order told me to give her 30 mins I figured it was a lot of orders ahead of me but it was only two ahead of me. 30mins I come back and the place is closed. I already paid for my food so I couldn't do anything some guy told me he saw the young lady walk out and said she was comin back I didn't think nthn of it so I waited. That took an additional 30mins at that point I got sacred cause I thought something happened to her she shows up after more time goes by I asked her if she was ok is she safe I could tell something was off she said she didn't make the food and I would have to wait another 20 mins. I mean shit what else could I do I waited long enough and paid for my food. Still left a good tip cause idk what she was goin thru. I'm not sure what news she received or phone call I was just worried for her sake Recent encounter: I got there place an order nthn fancy just a fish sandwich no mayo. She said give her about 15 mins I said ok so I could go get cash and pay for my food. I come back pay for my food left a tip. She said the order is comin up give like 10 more mins. No problem. I go get my food didn't think nthn of it I checked my food and it was the wrong bag my order got switched up with someone else's. I got asked what was my order I repeated in full fish sandwich no mayo. Another 10-12 mins go by and I just want my food bruh like nthn else. I get my food go back to my vehicle and what do I find? My fish sandwich with mayo. At this point I am fuckin livid bro I'm distraught. Bruh all the time I literally put into that shit just for my order to be fucked up AGAIN. Like HOW SWAY? I go ask for some extra bread so I can do this shit myself she swore up and down that there was no mayo on my sandwich I even passed the shit around on the street asking people "what does this look like to u" all sayin the same "Mayo" so I know I wasn't crazy. But the fact that I waited long enough to dam there watch an episode of a series paid left a tip and still got the wrong order twice. I am fuckin done. Like yo why does it feel like I was in the fuckin Twilight Zone or something. Im not here to bash the business in anyway I'm just here sharing my experiences with this shit. Use my experiences as a guiding light. I support black businesses but fuck why do I have to experience shit like this on several occasions from them? Why do I gotta fight fuckin tooth and nail just to get some type of service? Why does it feel like a battle As a customer and as a black male? No one has the answers and that's the part that kills me. But yet I'm supposed to stay silent not say anything keep my head down and just keep it moving when I can't even get the same treatment or some type of basic human decency.

Yelp
This was my 1st visit to Mama T's. Great fried fish sandwich with seasoned fries. The wait was 25 minutes on a Friday at noon but it was well worth the wait. My sandwich was hot and delicious. I waited until I got home to eat. Next time my steering wheel will be my table

Yelp
The Customer service is always Great! Your food is always hot and delicious. You can't go wrong with anything that's on the menu

Yelp
I just so happen to stumble across this place with my wife and the outside alone...smelled amazing, so we both decided to try it. We both ordered the fish sandwich with fries and everything tasted great. If I could give them 10 stars I would!!! The fish on the sandwich was breaded to perfection and fries were perfectly seasoned. The sandwich alone filled me up and the fries put me in a food coma lol. If you are ever in the Downtown Oakland area please go and support a local restaurant it won't disappoint.
google avatar

Yelp
This woman has a fantastic spot been operating out 13 years she's revamping best of luck to her definitely coming back when I'm in Oakland love supporting black business and she's hiring if you need a job

Yelp
Came here all the way from Milpitas to learn they were closed on a Friday at 8pm. Checked Instagram page to check for hours of operation, nothing there. Then i called , no answering machine message with hours of operation. Checked Yelp which said they were open. Wasted time and gas to learn they we're closed from 8pm-10pm.

Yelp
Fish Samitch is snacking. This was years ago, wondering if it's still the same I'll have to go back soon

google avatar

Kelley C.

Yelp
Come through fish sandwich. I ordered a fish sandwich and fries for me and my son which both was very good! My son called the next day to tell me how much he enjoyed the sandwich and called again the other day saying he wanted another on but they were closed on Monday. The only downfall I forgot to ask for cheese on my fish sandwich and should've asked for light onions. I did not eat all the sandwich until later that evening using a toaster grill to reheat and let me tell you; it was still so good!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
This place has really good portion sizes for the price, which is one of the main reason I keep going back. I've had the burger and their famous fish sandwich. Though I think the burger is better than the sandwich, in my opinion. Always call ahead, sometimes their too busy to take walk up orders.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Catered To You ever since I had my first few drinks in Uptown. Located right next to Woods, on the same block as Make Westing and Somar (which usually has its own tacos on weekends), this place is a literal hole in the wall. Usually check for the hand painted sign on the street, some plastic chairs, and a line. The menu is pretty simple alcohol-soaking food: fried fish, grilled or fried chicken, sandwiches or baskets. No thrills, just good. So after a day of drinking, following a night of drinking, I saw this was open and while I LOVE Shrimp Falafel Mix, I had to try something new. I got the Best of Both Worlds because you have to: a sandwich with a marinated chicken breast topped with a fried fish fillet, with lettuce, onions, tomato and a delicious sauce. And the side of Cajun fries. The sandwich is big and delicious. I devoured mine but make sure you do it over something as the juice from the veggies and sauce will drip. The fries were also good, though cause I walked home I had to deal with the steaming process. All in all, definitely a good place to grab and go if you need something simple and filling.
google avatar

Black J.

Yelp
My favorite spot to go to when I go to Oakland for a good fish sandwich ... delicious just like back home
google avatar

Lex M.

Yelp
Drunk between bars or just hungry, this place is worth a shot. If I could give this more stars I would. A hole in the wall sandwiched between two much larger establishments. The lady who runs this often is the only one there, yet whips out amazing food with efficiency. I have only had the fish there, but it is incredible. The Fish Sandwich is my go to, which comes with a lot of seasoned fries. People rave about the fried catfish, which I haven't had and is only on certain days.
google avatar

Jodie G.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Ms.T and her fish sandwiches. I feel like when the day is off balance and you need a nice break you can always grab a fish sandwich or any menu item from Catered To You. The fish is cooked to perfection and has just the right balance of flavors, don't forget to get hot sauce. The bread is proportional to the protein and plenty of fries to create some balance. I would also suggest adding a ginger drink to help wash the food down. If you're looking to support a local business and do some good this is the place to go. Ms.T never disappoints. She also caters for events. If you're traveling through this Bay, this is a must!
