22 Restaurants Highlighting Jersey City’s Rich Culinary Diversity

"A rather cocktail-loungey restaurant along the Hackensack River waterfront, with views of Newark across the water, Mamak House offers a deep dive into Malaysian cuisine with a few Chinese and Indonesian flourishes. For an introduction to the cuisine, try nasi lemak, a rice-based dish topped with a dark chicken curry and anchovy relish. Okra with fermented belacan sauce is another highlight, and so is Hokkien char mee — thick wheat noodles slicked with a dark fragrant sauce and topped with crisp fried shallots." - Robert Sietsema

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, February 2021 - Eater NY

"The name of this dish roughly means “rice in cream” in Malay, referring to the fact that the rice — which is its centerpiece — has been cooked in coconut cream. Radiating from the rice are a number of other dishes in Malaysia’s most popular set meal ($9.25): boiled egg, sliced cucumbers, a sambal (relish) made from dried anchovies, and a chicken curry that, according to the menu, is flavored with screwpine (pandanus leaves) and clove, creating an interesting pungency that will remind you of no other curry. Mamak may be Jersey City’s first full-blown Malaysian restaurant, located just off a highway that looks over the Hackensack River to Newark. The sprawling premises with two massive dining rooms was previously a steakhouse." - Eater Staff

Came here on Mother's Day with my mom and the food was delicious! The service was incredible fast — it only took 25 minutes from the moment we sat down and ordered to get our food. All the dishes we ordered are captioned in the photos. It's also very affordable! We ended up ordering more food to-go 🥳 Would love to eat here again!

Overall, the experience was decent. The food was average, and the service at the beginning was quite pleasant. Compared to a Malaysian restaurant I’ve been to in Edison, the service here is actually better, although the food—especially the Hainanese chicken—might be slightly better in Edison. So in my opinion, both places have their own strengths. The two male servers here were professional and friendly. However, the checkout experience was really disappointing. A female server came to handle the bill. We were told that there was a discount for paying in cash, so we decided to pay that way. She immediately asked how much tip we were giving, and before we could even review the bill properly, she took the money. When I tried to ask for more clarity, she simply said, “You’ll get the discount anyway,” and then pressed again, “How much tip?” I felt her attitude was quite pushy and uncomfortable. I ended up saying, “18%, " Then we waited a long time to get our change back, even though the restaurant wasn’t busy. A male server later explained they needed to verify the cash was real, which I can understand—but the wait was still quite long. When we finally got the change, it was short by over a dollar. I wasn’t really bothered by the amount, but the whole process felt rushed and dismissive. That female server in particular made the experience feel unpleasant. What could’ve been a fairly positive overall experience ended on a frustrating note because of this.

Google
Nice spot for some authentic Malaysian cuisine. We tried the pi pa duck, curry beef rendang w rice, curry puffs, roti canai & mango w sticky rice. The best dishes were the duck and the dessert. I was looking forward to trying the rendang and curry puffs. Unfortunately, the curry puffs were more like over fried empanadas than the flaky curry puffs I've had in Malaysia. And though the beef rendang had great flavor, most of the meat pieces were mostly fat and hard to chew. The restaurant itself is a big clean space and the service was great. I would come back to try some other dishes.

Found out too late (already ingested huge amounts) that the food is moldy. Ordered the green thai curry dish and the bamboo shoots had heavy mold. Absolutely unacceptable and disgusting.

Google
Our second time at the restaurant, and we loved the food, service, and ambiance. We ordered coconut shrimp, noodles, fish, and eggplant. The coconut shrimp was totally the winner, and we all loved it. Our server, Raymond, was friendly and checked on us a couple of times if we needed anything. It is a casual spot for dining, but the restaurant is pretty big to have a good capacity of people. I definitely recommend the restaurant for a good dining experience.

Google
This is a hidden gem for delicious Malaysian food with excellent vegetarian/plant-based (by default) options. Very healthy portions, and we loved trying new foods, like the peanut pancake for dessert and a vegetarian curry that was out of this world. The service was wonderful, very family friendly atmosphere. We were so happy to have stopped here instead of making the trek to Chinatown. I wish I had more photos of the food--we basically devoured it before I could snap more pictures!

Google
This place is delicious!! The chicken satay had the best sauce I’ve ever had. The Pi Pa Duck was the best duck I’ve ever had. Everything was absolutely scrumptious and the service was superb. Definitely one of the best Malaysian restaurants I’ve ever been to!!

Google
Authentic Malaysian food!! Made the trek here on a whim and was absolutely blown away. We had seen another reviewer complaining about the soup broth of the prawn mee and that did not deter us one bit. It’s an acquired taste and Mamak House nailed it! Perfectly savory with a hint of sourness. All the toppings, from the pork slices to the beansprouts and fried shallots, were spot on, except that you wouldn’t get such large prawns from the average hawker. Everything else we ordered was great! Would give the satay a miss if you’re picky - flavor was right but the pieces were too large and less charred than I’d like. Highly recommend and will be back for more!

Yelp
Really great dining experience at Mamak! Heard some wonderful things about the food and they didn't disappoint. We had arrived during a late dinner rush but were seated immediately. They have a great variety of Malaysian and Chinese specialties. Everything we ordered was definitely cooked fresh and came out very quickly. We started with a mango salad, honey squid, and roti canai. We also had ordered the beef with American broccoli, seafood pan fried noodle, and another noodle dish. Loved everything! Service was excellent and all of the employees were great! We will definitely be back again!

Yelp
Ordered: Malaysian Lychee Juice (~$6) Roti Canai (~$7): crispy Indian-style pancake served with curry chicken as dipping sauce Thai Basil w Chicken (~$19): chicken with bell peppers, onion, and chili in a Thai basil sauce; served with jasmine rice Char Kway Teow (~$15): stir-fried flat rice noodles with fresh shrimp, squid, bean sprouts, egg, soy sauce, and chili paste Aya's take: If you're craving Malaysian, Chinese, or Thai food - Mamak House will satisfy any of those cravings! They weren't busy at all when we stopped by around 1pm on a Saturday. There's tons of options on their extensive menu so you will absolutely find something for everyone regardless of dietary needs. We started with the Roti Canai. The roti was crispy, flaky, and buttery. It paired nicely with the curry chicken dipping sauce which was sweet, aromatic, and tasty. My only complaint is that they only gave a single piece of chicken and single potato. That makes this a difficult appetizer to share and the ratio of roti to curry is a bit off. My absolute favorite bite here is the Char Kway Teow. It caught my eye on the menu and did not disappoint! It was smoky from the wok, slightly sweet, and slightly savory from the soy sauce. The shrimp & squid were super fresh, tender, and had a nice chew. I wish they had more shrimp as there were only 4 pieces. The Thai Basil w Chicken was cooked well and was a solid portion but nothing to write home about. It was such a filling and affordable meal! Plenty of seating and free parking in the back. I highly recommend trying them out!

Yelp
We were huge fans of Satay, a Malaysian restaurant that had served amazing food in Hoboken for years. Sadly, it closed a year or so ago, and we needed a similar spot to satisfy our cravings. I came across Mamak House a while back and had planned to visit it in-person. However, the other night I learned that they would deliver to our area, and we decided to do that instead. We wound up sharing an order of the Roti Canai. The flaky, oily pancake was served with a sweet curry dipping sauce that was filled with a few large pieces of chicken. Both items were delicious, particularly the curry, which was so flavorful that I decided to pour it over my Char Kway Teow, which was otherwise bland without it. The dish consisted of stir-fried, flat rice noodles with shrimp, squid, bean sprouts, eggs, soy sauce, and chili paste. The seafood seemed very fresh; however, I could not detect any spice at all, so the added curry was critical. My companion found his Thai Basil Noodle with Chicken similar unmemorable and boring. We had been so excited to find another Malaysian restaurant, but it, sadly, did not live up to Satay's legacy. Due to its mediocre food and delivery wait time because of the distance, we would instead probably opt to get dinner from another Asian cuisine destination closer to us.

Yelp
This place is more Malaysian Chinese food rather than Malaysian Hawker food. So it's good for groups. They do have some of the standard hawker fair like Nasi Lemak and Char Kurt Teow. Service was fast and friendly. Even though it was closing time they still welcomed us and said for us to take our time. The food was flavorful. We enjoyed coming back as the food and service has remained consistent.

Yelp
I've been coming to this restaurant for years since they opened. My family and I are regulars now. All their staff are super friendly, especially Tiffany. Their roti canai, Malaysian curry puff, char kway teow, fried pearl noodles, peanut pancake, Thai sticky rice with fresh mango, Malaysian ice tea, and Malaysian lychee juice are all my go-tos. Can't go wrong with any of those. Although I highly recommend this place, I had to take off a star for the pricing. Being a regular for years, I have watched the prices rise and rise. However, besides the pricing, everything on their menu is flavorful. Definitely give this place a chance if you haven't already. If I had to choose an order for you, I'd pick the fried pearl noodles with a lychee juice. For dessert, definitely try the sticky rice with fresh mango.

Yelp
Really good food at a reasonable price. Never noticed this place while driving on rt 440 but it came up on yelp while we were in the area & decided to give it a chance. Excellent service, friendly staff, clean and spacious location. Started with the roti canai, small appetizer, big taste in the excellent curry sauce, egg drop soup was really good, the clove really came out in the chilli Indian Chicken & the Mango Chicken was excellent. First time having the peanut pancake that went will with the fries ice cream. The only thing that wasn't impressive was the egg roll, granted they weren't bad, just nit impressive but I dipped them in the mango Chicken sauce which really turned it up. Will definitely be trying g more stuff here in the future.

Yelp
The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating and there's parking on both sides. It is easy to just walk in and get a table. The portions are huge and the food is very flavorful. Roti canai is a classic and always a must get appetizer - some of the roti was a bit thin so it broke and was hard to get the sauce. However the curry sauce is super flavorful. Honey squid was crispy and addicting - would be a great snack for drinking but a bit too crispy for my taste. Kari Mee with Shrimp came with 5 jumbo shrimps in a rich, curry broth. The noodles soaked up the broth nicely. Hokkien Char Mee has a nice smokey flavor ( good wok hei). There was jumbo shrimp, squid and pork.

Yelp
Very surprised. Don't judge a book by its cover in this case don't judge the external of the building and the location on a very busy industrial roadway. It was one of the top Malaysian meals that we have had in a long time very surprised to find this in Bayonne. As soon as we stepped in from the parking lot, we knew we were in a different location and the ethnic customer base confirmed we were going to have a good meal . We started off with an order of Tom Yum soup with seafood which had a nice bite. Next we followed that with a puff pastry order (4 in the order) the crust was flaky and a small amount of meet inside. Was okay; would order again. We ordered the rest off the lunch menu. Mango shrimp dish was excellent. To our surprise the mangos were perfectly ripe and the flavor profile had a bit of a kick... nice flavor. We also had the green curry with chicken, another very nice flavorful dish. Contemporary decor. Be sure to check out the gender neutral restrooms. Parking lot outside

Yelp
There's a good variety of vegetarian options here, which is a bit rare with Malaysian food. I tried the vegetarian golden fish, which had some strong flavors from the five spice and nori, a crispy exterior, and chewy interior. This was a cool diversion from the usual dishes I try.

Yelp
Great food quality, great service with friendly and attentive staff, and great ambiance. Bonus points for having parking! It's super affordable and filling, highly recommend checking this place out!

Yelp
This is not a review that I like to write. I read glowing reviews of Mamak House in a group. It's pretty out of the way for me but we happened to be passing by the area. Save your money and time unless there is really a dish you want to try. I ordered the Roti Canai, Half Hainanese Chicken, Char Kway Teow, Fish Porridge, Nasi Lemak... and most lacked flavor... it was bland! The fish porridge was the most decent, followed by the Nasi Lemak (I'm Asian but not Malaysian so don't trust me on this). Looks like there are others that agree with me, I didn't check reviews before I ordered.

Yelp
Great Malaysian restaurant in Jersey City! The lunch specials can't be beat...I ordered the Beef Rendang (which was cooked with an onion, lemon grass and chili in a spicy curry) and it was delicious. Other dishes we shared included satay and chilli chicken. The quality of the food is top-notch as is the service and overall atmosphere. We hope to be back for dinner soon...

Yelp
I came here for a friend's birthday party in the private room and really loved the whole evening. Our hostess had preselected the dinner menu and we were so lucky to enjoy her favorites: dumplings, Chinese broccoli, duck, too many to list. What really made me love this place is how much pride the owners have and their dedication to making this evening special for my friend's celebration. Not a fancy place but run by a very nice staff!

Yelp
Food was outstanding. The staff were super kind and accommodating . Service was fast and efficient. They have free parking and a big lot.. they can easily accommodate large groups and the ambiance was sweet too.. extremely clean and well thought out floor plan. We had chicken fried rice, chicken satay, hot and sour soup and hot seafood soup .. all were spicy and full of flavor.

Yelp
Because there is a limited number of Malaysian restaurants in NJ, Mamak House didn't disappoint. Having traveled to Malaysia recently, I was craving for some good Malaysian food. My go to is Char Kuey Tiao, Roti Canai and Ayam Rendang. But there are so many other dishes I wish I could have ordered them too. So if you are wondering about Mamak House, go for it ! Other options are Chinese and Thai dishes. Service is great. They have a full bar as well. Look forward to the next time I visit.

Yelp
We have gotten take out from Mamak House a few times and generally like our food. There are several types of cuisines on the menu so if you want Chinese and your partner wants Thai, there are plenty of dishes to chose from. As a vegetarian, I appreciate that they have a vegetarian section of their menu. Last time I had the Kari Sayur (#61) and I liked it; there was a large variety of vetables in the dish which made it very unique. The vegetable Thai springrolls are very small and do not have much filling, so I wouldn't recommend them. Aside from skipping the Thai spring rolls, I would suggest ordering extra rice as they portion exactly 1 cup of rice for each main dish. I guess I am spoiled and require extra rice with my curries, so I order extra rice and am happy. I would absolutely love if they added a vegetarian potato curry version of Roti Canai to their menu.

Luis B.

Yelp
I ordered a pad Thai through uber eats. The instructions specific said it was made of bean sprouts and tofu. When we received the order the Pad Thai was made of chicken. After we received the order, we called the restaurant and ask them to change the pad Thai and they refused because it was our fault for not specify we wanted tofu instead of chicken. The order on the menu didn't say anything about choosing between chicken or tofu. This is the first and last time I will order from this place. The manager then said if you don't want the chicken you have to call ahead and instruct them. Their menu options should allow the customer to choose the add one. The manager was strident and uncooperative.

Yelp
There's not many Malaysian places in the neighborhood and MAMAK did knock it out of the park! They deserve a 4.5/5 overall. This place surprised me with their version of the prawn mee, called the mamak udang mee 4.5/5: their protein of pork & shrimp was so tender and juicy - highly recommend this dish The roti telur 4.5/5: was also super delish with the spicy curry combo. Last but not least, the Thai ice tea went really well with everything. Would def come back to try the other dishes. The outside looks a bit sketchy but interior looks way better!

Yelp
Food sucks try another resturant. Low quality meat and shitty tasting food , very low quality.

Yelp
I liked the place but I wasn't impressed with the food. It came out so fast that it was obvious that it wasn't cook fresh for us. There are better Malaysian restaurants in Hudson county.
google avatar

Chengru L.

Yelp
One of my favorite dishes is Hainanese Chicken Rice so I was so happy to find a place nearby that makes it. And I definitely wasn't disappointed! The chicken was juicy and tender while the rice was super flavorful. I hate when restaurants don't make the chicken rice as flavorful since I consider the rice the star of the show. We also tried the roti canai and the sauce was really delicious. I'm definitely getting take out from them again!
google avatar

Eunice K.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber eats Roti canai- not bad. Might be better if it's slightly air fried to get that crispiness Fried rice with roasted pork- okay. Wish there were more veggies Golden spare ribs- my favorite. I liked it better without the sauce Tom yum soup- hot and good Not sure what this place specializes in. Seems like it has a mix of different things. It's good but idk if it's like 4/5 stars good

Yelp
Everything from their attentive and friendly customer service, to their unique offerings, makes this a favorite and most frequented Asian restaurant close to home. Ordered their wide rice noodles with beef, mild spiced honey fried calamari, water spinach sautéed with garlic, and soft shell crab. Fresh ingredients and great flavors makes every visit a great experience! Thanks for your excellent food!
google avatar

Bevano L.

Yelp
Ordered two food to go from doordash. In terms of take out experience, timing estimate is bad. Order shown as completed but there's 5 people in front of me that's still waiting for food. No one asked about my order until 5-10mins later. They looked to be under staffed and the waitress was apologetic. Meal wise, I like the prawn mee noodle the most. It's flavorful and the portion is generous. For Hainanese chicken rice, i got lots of rice which is fragrant but received 6 pieces of boney chicken. Would be better if the chicken portion was more. But for $10, that's not too bad.

Yelp
The food around these parts of Jersey is Sketchy to start with....and while in the past I've had decent food at Mamak, I think they changed owners. The new people are talentless cooks and very rude. Firstly, the few times I visited this restaurant there was a young man who always assisted and took my order. Well, he wasn't working today. Some lady who was the manager there today was working. Coincidently the service today was as terrible as the food. I had to return the Sesame Chicken because it was hard and tasteless. Save your calories on something else. You get about 7/8 pieces of little chicken bites for $10 served with a bunch of white rice and the most disgusting soup I've ever tasted. Since they do not allow substitutions I recommend saving a tree and Never ORder that nasty chicken soup. I also ordered shrimp and broccoli which was ok...but definitely was a run to the bathroom order!!! I also ordered steamed dumplings which were quite delicious but I've never seen such a tiny dumpling in my life. The chefs there today with the rude mean manager lady have ruined this restaurant. So I went back to exchange that horrible sesame chicken (Yes...that bad)...and got this curry chicken. Those people gave me a tub of white rice and a few pieces of chicken. I guess that was the punishment for bringing back the food. Even though I had to make two trips to the restaurant they got me by giving me 1/4 of the serving for the replacement dish (which they forced me to choose what they wanted). My bigger punishment AGAIN was another toilet run that crept into my schedule for another 20 min. session. I will not be visiting again...AND BY THE WAY THAT CURRY CHICKEN WENT IN THE GARBAGE!

Yelp
Ugh I hate writing reviews like these. I really really really wanted to give these guys a 5 star rating and call it a day. The restaurant itself was clean and had ample parking. The folks who work here are incredibly friendly, super attentive and fast to handle any issues. Generally speaking, everything but the food was spot on. But the food ... woof. Given that I'm so far removed from my days living in Singapore and hitting up hawker centers left and right, I'm always desperate to find some SGP/Malaysian chow in the area that can taste remotely as good as what I had there. That's a tall order given that nearly every place I ate at other than say Taste Good in Elmhurst and maybe some of the menu in Penang in the city were all crap. Sadly this place didn't live up to the expectations I had, which were muted based on my general experience. We ordered a bunch of stuff given our excitement. The roti canal was ok but the curry itself was not flavorful. It was also kind of weak/soupey, which would be a common theme with the rest of the food. The roast pork/wonton soup wasn't prepared like the way you get cha siew see in Asia, it was basically a pork wonton dish with noodles on the side (for the "dry" option). The wontons also didn't taste good at all and didn't do my stomach any favors later that night. The Malay belacan (Malay fun guang) was also a huge disappointment. Same issue, the vegetables were fresh but the sauce was absolutely flavorless which is shocking for something as rich as sambal sauce. It simply wasn't added enough, or the sauce was too diluted. It was flavorless which is a big no-no for this kind of dish. The satay tofu appetizer with peanut sauce was also absolute garbage, sad to say. It was poorly prepared, overly fried and it basically vaporized the essence of the dish itself which should be full of peanut sauce and brimming with cucumbers and bean sprouts. Instead it was a fried triangular hockey puck that was terrible to bite into, let alone swallow. The shrimp noodles were also absolutely terrible. The flavor of the soup was completely off and it was completely bombarded by a pile of pork. I've never had any iteration of this dish that used this kind of loose pork with just a few shrimps in what should be a mostly shrimp based noodle dish with some fish cakes to boot. I've come across some versions with maybe a slice of pork or two but not like this kind of random hot pot-like meat that was filling this dish. Absolutely a big no-no here. We also ordered the pad Thai for kicks - nothing unique or special here. The least jarring was actually the fish congee that we got for the kids. I also ended up eating some since I really wasn't a fan of the other food. I do like how they have all the right elements in the menu for a Malaysian joint. It was just disappointing that so many of the dishes we ordered missed the mark so badly in terms of taste. I don't expect things to be fully authentic here, but the flavors were just so off that people it will likely be jarring to some folks who are expecting somewhat accurate SE Asian flavors. Maybe they just had a really off day, but I was definitely not impressed.

Yelp
Mamak House is so good!! It's a chinese malaysian restaurant literally in the middle of nowhere, but it's so worth it to visit this restaurant and try their dishes! For 4 people, we ordered way too much, but each dish was distinct in flavor and I really enjoyed all of them. I don't think you can go wrong here. Also, the service was so good and the pricing is so reasonable. I recommend: 1) Chicken, Eggplant, Salted Fish Casserole 2) Mee Goreng Noodles 3) String beans in a salty fish sauce 4) Coconut Fried Rice 5) Ayam Rendang ( chicken ) 6) Salted Squid I'll be back

Yelp
Looks are deceiving! You look outside and will say the restaurant might not be good but once you go inside the restaurant is nice and has amazing food to offer! Location: It is located in Jersey City. My friend recommended to go here. The exterior is not that great, bit scary. Lot of parking. When you go inside, it is clean and there is a lot of seating. Really different from the outside. Lol. Service: Our server is nice, the food came out fast and sizzling! Food: GREEN CURRY CHICKEN: omg don't have a picture but it was delicious, it also has bamboo shoots that I love! When u take it home and reheat it, the taste gets better and better. BEEF RENDANG: omg i forgot to take pic again cause it was so good. Perfect amount of spice and the beef was tender. THAI SPRING ROLLS: came out hot, it was okay for me. The dipping sauce compliments the rolls. ROTI CANAI: my favorite! The roti is freshly baked and the sauce has chunks of chicken, it is spicy but it is good! SEAFOOD with SEWEED: another favorite! There is a lot of seafood here and the broth taste so good! THAI TEA: typical thai tea, just wished they have boba. Price rating: 6/10, not bad at all. Everything was delicious. Definitely will come back here and order other things! Will order Roti Canai again!

Yelp
Situated next to NJ-440, this is an excellent place for trying some Malaysian delight. The is surprisingly bug inside, everything's shiny and new, lots of parking space. They have a large menu, including paper takeout ones. We ordered our fav Roti Canai for appetizers, alongside chicken satay and tom yum soup. Loved the canani, sauce was delicious. The satay was cooked well too, came with peanut sauce on the side. I was disappointed with the tom yum, it was missing the lemongrass flavor me. The was more creamy and thick, I am used to the thin lemon flavor style. For entree we got the seafood with curd, some green vegetables and the Ayam Rendang (dark meat chicken with special curry sauce). I loveeed the Rendang, a very unique dish, never saw it in other Malaysian or Thai restaurants. The curry is creamy but not spicy. Chicken is delicately soft. Overall we were happy with our meal and service. It will be one of our go to places in JC.

Yelp
Great Malaysia food. Excellent service. Chicken satay is very good!! TumYum soup is hot but lack some lemongrass flavor. We also have seafood/tofu pot, curry chicken (chef special) and water spinach with Fermented Beancurd. Not enough Fermented Beancurd flavor for me but it's still pretty good. Overall great food. Def worth a try!

Yelp
Visited this place for the first time & I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was! Restaurant looked clean.Service was good as well, friendly staff. This is a nice neighborhood restaurent & hope this place stays open for business!

Yelp
The service I received was undeniably absurd. They refused to take large bills. The machine they have that checks if money is fake was broken. They denied explanation how I got the money. Thinking I'm a fraud/scam eating at their restaurant. It's unfortunate that they lost a customer for their wrongful act. I took that money that they assumed was not real to a gas station and accepted it with no judgement. I have never been humiliated. I was embarrassed for how they treated me paying with a large bill. They didn't deserved to be tipped nor would ever go back to that restaurant.

Yelp
The food itself is good. However, portion sizes for the price does not equate. I believe the food is way too overpriced for the small amount you get.

Yelp
After kicking off a very busy morning at 4:30am, I was famished by 11. I was in a different town than I normally am in, so I wasn't very familiar with the local food spots. Yelp to the rescue! I went on and checked to see what was in the vicinity that worked with my dietary restrictions, and I came upon Mamak House. I was able to peruse their menu online, which was great, and they had a lot of great options. I loved how many vegetarian options they had that weren't just fried tofu. Much appreciated! I placed my order online for pickup, and made my way over. It does have a slightly tricky entrance off of the highway, so take care to slow down before needing to make that turn into the parking lot. Also, the GPS led me to the back of the building, and I had to walk around to get to the door. I didn't mind, but I figure for anyone wanting to visit, it's nice to know ahead of time if you're not familiar with the territory. When I made my way in, I was greeted by a very friendly gentleman. I mentioned I was there for a pickup order, and he was able to retrieve it very quickly, and double checked it before handing it over to me. When I, finally, got a chance to taste the food, I was blown away. It was incredible! I ordered the Malay Buddhist Delight, and I was not disappointed at all. Temperature was perfect, taste was perfect, and none of the veggies were overcooked and limp; they were crisp and blended well with one another. What a winner! I'm excited to be back in town soon so I can go and visit them again! I'd love to see what their dine-in experience is like, eventually.

Yelp
Simply amazing. Every dish was above average of anything else in the Hoboken/JC area. Yes it's a little out of the way but we'll worth it. There is also a lot of seating and they are friendly if you want to dine in.

Yelp
High on spices, I thought about how my father uses "complex" as an unfavorable term for both food and music (I can't recall which band he labeled "complicated non-rock") and wondered what he might say about the wild array of flavors that Mamak House serves up. I already have pro-nasi lemak sentiments, so when I saw Robert Sietsema liked it here that was my choice. The descriptions of "chili anchovy" and "curry chicken" don't come close to conveying what's going on here. I'm unable to describe the depth of the flavors other than to say they're plenty spicy but also contain sweetness. Visual confirmation of star anise in the chicken is the only hint. I always like to try roti canai, and always like them even if they're not radically different at each place. This one's structurally similar to what you've had before, but with a hotter and more mysterious sauce. I just glimpsed at the long online menu, where 12 of the 17 listed appetizers have the hot pepper sign. In the noodle soup section, this honor is awarded to all 11 items.

Yelp
There aren't really any Malaysian restaurants around the general JC area, so I was excited when I discovered this Malaysian/Chinese/Asian fusion spot! Mamak House offers a surprisingly large menu of authentic dishes, all at very reasonable prices. Family-style sharing is the way to go here to try different items. During my last visit I came with one other person, and we had a hard time deciding what two dishes we wanted for dinner... everything looked so good! We ended up sharing the Kari Mee (spicy lemongrass, coconut curry noodles) and Char Kway Teow (stir fried noodles), and both were flavorful and aromatic, with a good level of spice to it. The restaurant itself is large and clean and tables are nicely spaced out. I noticed lots of takeout orders, and it looks like they have great lunch specials deals as well. Will be back!

Yelp
I really wish that I lived closer to this restaurant so that I could go back more often! The interior is reallyy big, modern and clean so I didn't have to wait to be seated. I also love how there are so many different food choices on the menu! Food wise, I tried the Clay Pot Pearl Noodles, Roti Canai, Half Hainanese Chicken, and Satay Chicken. They were all really delicious and not too pricey! I really wanted to try their desserts but sadly they didn't offer it when I went (but they look really cool so definitely try them!)

Yelp
Food is excellent but need to update the party room. The wall need to be knocked down and replaced with a sliding door to accommodate bigger private parties with a space that can be used as a dance floor. I am really impressed that I was planning to have my mom's birthday this January 2025. The thing that stopping me is the party area. Hoping that owner can consider this suggestion.

Yelp
I have been here before and the food was awful. I wanted to give this place a second chance but frankly speaking this place needs a makeover on their food. We ordered a

Yelp
There aren't many Malaysia/Singapore joints so it's always exciting to find one. We went for Saturday lunch, and it was fairly crowded but there wasn't a wait. We had the Mamak Udang Mee (prawn noodles for the uninitiated) and Beef Chow Fun, with Malaysian Curry Puffs for apps. The Mee Udang was pretty enjoyable , with a savoury broth and noodles that weren't overcooked/bloated. I wished the broth was richer with more complex flavouring (too much soy sauce perhaps), but I'll take it. The curry puffs were smaller than they would normally be in Malaysia/Singapore, but they're sensibly sized as apps. If you're unfamiliar, they're similar to empanadas, with a slightly softer and "fluffier" pastry shell. Would definitely return.

Yelp
Not sure why the rating is so high. Not authentic at all, totally underflavored. Nice staff but attitude and stingy with plates silverware and napkins, mistakes on the bill, and to make matters worse, upset stomachs for half our party.

Yelp
Best you can find in the area. The food so fresh. I love the waitress. They have bar also. 5 stars no doubt.

Yelp
We pass by this spot all the time and was interested with the new setup and cuisine. We didn't like our last trip here with the previous operators. We are glad someone took up the challenge. We came in a Tuesday night. Just 4 customers including us. Still new I suppose. We ordered the roti canai, hainanese chicken, eggplant, fried rice Roti was ok. Edges were a bit dry. Probably been sitting under the lights. The chicken and eggplant were well made. Tasty, not oily or overwhelming. Presentation also done right. Fried rice was too oily. We had to order white rice to mix with the fried to soak the oil. Hot tea is a couple bucks, but goes well with the meal and dessert. We had the mango sticky rice. The mango type didn't go well with the rice. Overall just ok. Service was fie. Just what is expected. Food is better with more quality, which is reflected in the price. Hope this place stays for a while and keeps the quality consistent . Right now they get a recommendation.

Yelp
Solid Asian food at really great prices. Come here if you're in the area especially for their lunch deals but dinner is great as well. Their menu had a mix of Malaysian, Thai, and Chinese dishes. My favorites are the ayam pandan (fried chicken), golden squid (similar to Cantonese salt & pepper squid), and Malaysian pork chops (sweet and sour pork chops). The hainanese chicken & rice is good for the price but could use a little more flavor (especially in the rice). The Thai curries are pretty good also and I think I actually prefer those over the more Malaysian curries here.
