Mama's Kubo Review - West Hampstead - London - The Infatuation

"London has a special knack of turning greyness into something engaging. On one end of the spectrum you’ve got the Barbican Estate—a breathtaking brutalist complex—and on the other, you’ve got Brent Cross—a nostalgic eyesore with a ferris wheel next to the North Circular. And, in Mama’s Kubo, the Finchley Road has a vivid injection of life. The cosy Filipino restaurant is a serene oasis that mixes warm service, big groups, and enlivening vinegary punches from its pork belly adobo. Put simply, it’s a Great Little Place on one of London’s most reliably dismal A-roads. Hectic location aside, Mama’s Kubo is a restaurant that’s very easy to get comfortable in. There are some banquet-sized tables that are perfect for big groups who are planning on tearing apart crispy pata (pork knuckle), alongside pancit, rice, and the like. Plus plenty of twos and a cushion-covered banquette, which are perfect for a low-key date night. Combined with the chummy service, it makes for a restaurant you can be as swift or as lazy as you like in. You’ll feel particularly smug when it’s hammering down outside, cars are flying past, and you’re digging into a steaming hot pile of pancit palabok—a smoky, stir-fried noodle dish of seafood, eggs, and pork crackling.  The menu—split between small plates, noodles, stir-fries, stews, kare kare, and more—favours numbers. Especially as there are five-ish dishes on the specials board as well. Look out for longganisa, a smoky and garlicky homemade sausage. It’s a rarity but, if the wind is blowing the correct direction and the chef’s lottery numbers have come in, then you might see it up there. If so, order it. Similarly, get the crispy pata if it’s on. It’s a giant pork knuckle (that gives Fred Flintstone energy) with impeccable crackling, that comes with sawsawan, a salty and vinegary dipping sauce, to cut through. The best dishes at Mama’s Kubo, like the adobo or the pata, have a mix of intense salty and sour Filipino flavours. They’re the kind of dishes that can turn any grey day on its head. The Best Filipino Restaurants in London: Where to Eat Filipino Food | Eater London

"An ode to sisters, mothers and grandmothers, Mama’s Kubo takes inspiration from traditional recipes passed down to chef Rommel Bustarde and director Claudine Bleza. The extensive menu offers a taste of home for nostalgic appetites, serving dinner table staples like kare kare — stewed beef brisket, aubergine and pak choi in peanut sauce. It also has a wide array of pancit, Filipino noodle dishes, but it’s the palabok, in which they are stir-fried with prawns, squid and smoked mackerel, shows off a distinct salty flavour unique to the Philippines." - Juli Suazo

Where to Eat in Hampstead and Highgate | Eater London

"Rommel Bustarde’s approach at Mama’s Kubo is somewhere in between, the food recognisably Filipino but looking outwards, tidying up and straightening lines of what is a notoriously riotous cuisine. A liver adobo is at the top of London’s pantheon: soft, creamy, honking with garlic, paired with an off menu garlic rice that can be felt on the breath the next morning. Sisig radiates like a sun, pig finely chopped, less heavy on the offal than other versions but with a strong crispy caramelisation of the heat of the pan. Pancit palabok is a cipher of a rich carbonara, with pancit for spaghetti, dried fish providing parmesan’s umami, pork rind for guanciale, egg the texture of tofu and then a whole load of prawns and squid. Finish with taho, layered silken tofu in a pool of lukewarm syrup, hitting all the comfort points of a morning bowl of porridge sweetened with honey." - Alexander Larman

The Best-Value Restaurants in West London Are Cheap, Not Cheap Eats | Eater London

"London’s Filipino chefs take divergent approaches: Some don’t mess, serving dishes as traditionally as possible. Others have taken the bones of Filipino cuisine and put new flesh on them, never claiming authenticity. London’s Best Noodle Dishes | Where to Eat Noodles in London | Eater London

"One of the best things at Mama’s Kubo is the pancit palabok, a riotous Filipino noodle dish that poses a tricky question in the manner of the Ship of Theseus — at what point does this stop being a carbonara? Of course, there’s pancit in place of spaghetti, dried fish in lieu of parmesan’s umami, pork rind for guanciale, egg instead of tofu’s texture... But then a whole load of prawns and squid make the question redundant. Obviously, the pancit is much better." - Jonathan Nunn

“This is a good place— a bit pricey, but as authentic as it gets, so we recommend it 👍🏻. We tried their best-seller, Clay Pot Adobo, and it didn’t disappoint. Their Palabok is good too!

Had a lovely evening at Mama’s Kubo. The staff was very kind and service was efficient. We discovered flavours from Filipino cuisine which was a first time for us. The lemongrass lemonade was delicious. The dishes were yummy with quality fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is calm and cosy; I really appreciated. I recommend and will come again to try your other dishes.

An exceptional find in West Hampstead, with authentic food combined with the genius and creativity of the chef Rommel. Add in the charming Claudine and the team who create the happiest atmosphere and it's easy to understand the 5 stars. I can only show you two starters, spring rolls (but pineapple in the chilli sauce is inspired) and the melt in the mouth aubergine dish - wow. There aren't any more photos as the food totally distracted me from taking any more 😊👏🏼 We were only sorry we'd not been here before, but that's going g to be rectified for sure. Thank you all so much, we feel like family. Highly recommended and appreciated 👌🏼

Stopped here for lunch on Saturday. We had the bone marrow broth, the aubergine 🍆special dish of the day and two bowls of 🍚. For dessert we tried the Turon which is a plantain and jackfruit spring roll🍌 . Friendly service and lovely food 😋

Definition Of Quality! If you read this comment and decide not to go here, then you’re insane and you should be imprisoned for incompetency. I couldn’t stop eating… the chef really put passion and dedication into this, it’s simple yes but can it be repeated by anyone else? Most likely not, the flavours are insane, the first bite out tears to my eye, it gave me nostalgia of a meal I had 18 years ago when I was 6, unlocking memories I had forgotten about. Serious stuff. The atmosphere, service and hospitality is the best you’ll ever get especially with how things a become a lot more desensitised, they really welcome you and make you feel at home doing their best to accommodate to each individual needs. This is a place you most certainly need to experience, whether it’s with, family, partner, a date, or by yourself, you won’t feel left out or out of place.

Made me miss my mums cooking :) As someone with a Filipino mum, I'm familiar with the flavors, and I was happy to find that the food here compared well to my mum’s cooking. I was with a group of 8 friends - the dishes were great for sharing, which was perfect since most of my friends had never tried Filipino food before. We ordered a variety of dishes so everyone could try a bit of everything, but my absolute favorite was the fish Sinigang. It had such a bold, strong sour flavour that really stood out. The service was equally wonderful. The lady who served us was very welcoming, answering all of our questions with a smile. She even let my friend sample the iced tea to make sure the sweetness was to his liking before he ordered it. Overall, it was a great experience, with delicious food and a warm, friendly atmosphere. I’d definitely come back!

Such a lovely and cozy place! The food was flavourful (best dish for me: Claypot chicken adobo) and the Pancit chicken noodles were great with a mix of everything! So happy to have found a Filipino gem in London 😊

Yelp
No idea where to go for dinner as we are starting to miss Filipino food during this holiday. We hopped on the underground and after a bus ride we arrived. The staff is super friendly and we chatted after we had placed our order. For starters we had the pork spring rolls with a different twist using pineapple in the sweet and sour sauce. It works well. We ordered ginger tea which was made with real ginger (if you like ginger beer then this is the drink for you). Crispy pata is a must and it was good. It was leaner which was also different in a good way. Aubergine bistec was very delicious and my wife commented that she has never tasted anything like it before (she enjoyed it very much). As a treat we met with Chef Rommel and his wife Claudine. They are both very personable. We were given an opportunity to taste chef's latest creation "Sapin Sapin" a three layer Filipino dessert; ube, langka (Jackfruit), and coconut. Five stars all the way... So when in London make sure to go here if you're in the mood for some Filipino food.
