"This homey North End institution first opened in 1964 and is beloved for its thin-crust pizza, its meatballs served in gravy, and its budget-friendly prices. The pizza, coated in Mama’s famous red sauce and heaped with cheese, speaks to St. Paul’s Italian history. Try the “Flavor Explosion” with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, banana peppers, and pineapple — or build your own pie next time you’re craving old-school pizza." - Stacy Brooks

Family owned Italian restaurant. Generous portions and great customer service. During the before times (pre-pandemic) the best part was getting the complimentary mini ice cream cone at the end of the meal. Perfect!

The Pizza was Good like 8/10 or 4.5 good but not 10/10 or 5/5 good. The Crust was Perfect but the sauce could be tastier!Service was the Best part and watching them make the pizzas 🍕. Will come back again!

What an absolute gem! Mama's Pizza is a trip to a genuine Italian kitchen, steeped in history and run with so much heart. This family business has been a St. Paul staple since 1964, and you can taste the tradition in every bite. The food is incredible, authentic, with generous portions and quality ingredients. We learned the pizza and pasta sauces are made from scratch using Mama's secret recipe, and you can tell. They taste so fresh and are clearly made with love. The son is now carrying the torch, and his dedication to keeping his mother's legacy alive is really touching. More than just the food, the hospitality is what makes this place so special. The owner is one of the kindest, most generous people you'll ever meet. He makes you feel less like a customer and more like family visiting for dinner. He made our visit truly memorable. I genuinely wish him all the success in keeping Mama's recipes shining for years to come. Highly, highly recommended!

Mostaccioli and meatballs was to die for we also had a pizza that was unbelievable. I would highly recommend this place.

Tried Mama's Pizza for the first time. Great old-school-style tavern pizza. Very helpful and fast service. Lots of melted cheese on their pizza and we got extra sauce. It was a very nice crust but I like my sauce with a little more flavor. I like a little sweet and spicy but still a solid pizza. Also had the Hot Dago Supreme and it was delicious and a lot of gooey cheese, onions, mushrooms, and lots of sauce and huge portion. I got it with no green pepper. I liked the sandwich a little more than the pizza (personal preference) The other person tried the mostcolli and said it had tons of cheese, huge portions, and loved it! They also got the antipasti salad. I'm not sure how it was. Definitely worth a try the ingredients are fresh and they don't skimp on the topping portions.

Google
First time here. No inside dining and some minor inconveniences. Thin crust pizza, generous toppings. 15" was perfectly done. Is it the best,,,hard spot to claim. Definitely in my top pizzas. Frozen pizza is call ahead a day in advance if you like that kind of thing. I'll be back

Google
Placed a pick order, and everything was ready at the time given. Easy in and out, decided to try it out on a recommendation, and glad we did. The food was great. We ordered a pizza and some ravioli. You could tell the pizza was made with quality ingredients just by the first bite. Didn't skimp on the toppings or cheese either! Ravioli was great and also came with some fresh baked bread, which added a nice touch to the dish. We definitely would recommend it to anyone who asks about a great pizza shop in the area. Prices were also great for the quality and amount of food that you receive. The service is great they treat you like family and not just like another customer!

Google
We were there as of 2000 10 years ago at 2015 was absolutely wonderful brilliant the food tasted good. It was hot fresh the best pizza I ever ate then we put it on our list put it down as number one on the list had a huge personal holiday ordered the explosion pizza and the other large special pizza and a quart of sauce and a loaf of bread and a large mixed plate sampler well I went to pick it up and everything was all mashed together I didn’t know until after I got home and tried to spread it out. The sampler platter was absolutely uneditable only because like I said, it was all mash together into one plate, and I asked for separate plates per item ignored the pizza was not cooked all the way the ingredients were raw and it’s just a huge letdown after spending around $100. I just know I won’t be back, unfortunately it used to be one of our favorite places so now I have to look for another Italian restaurant, but I will tell you the guy behind the counter when he got done chatting with another customer hanging out. He helped me and was nice enough to carry my order to the car, it was like one giant fat greasy ravioli, pushed all in one pack I’m sorry, but I can’t spend that kind of money and expect that kind of food.

We were blessed today by the kindness shown to us by Tony. My sister and I have traveled from Memphis, Tennessee, to attend the funeral service for our younger sister's husband. After leaving the cemetery, she wanted to go to Mama's Pizza. She told us how delicious the food was there, and she was right. Tony greeted us at the door and told us that the restaurant had not been able to bounce back after COVID, and they no longer offered dining in the restaurant. We explained our situation, and he welcomed us in. Our salads were delicious and fresh. The warm cheese bread and marinara sauce was amazing. We also had fresh sour dough bread with butter. He went across the street and got bottles of water for us. After our meal, Tony let us know he would not accept a tip, and he did not charge us for the water... that was his gift to us. Let me say this: Exceptional service like this is hard to come by in our world today. Going above and beyond to serve a grieving widow and her sisters...I do not have enough thanks. Please support this business! You will not be disappointed by the taste, quality, quantity, and exceptional over-the-top service!

Yelp
Awesome pizza and consistent. Crips cracker crust and lots of cheese and toppings! Delish !

Yelp
The best Italian food in the Twin Cities at great prices. Tony has the greatest pizza's and Italian takeout ever!

Yelp
so i was here with my buddy JOSH.... and we were on a quest to do something cool... so JOSH took it upon himself and bought a whole bunch of pizzas, when he asked what gives.... JOSH said we are feeding the homeless.... the inside of the place is classic nostalgic setting and the setting was ample, and smelled great... i highly recommend this place... https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2frHkKEGBWs

Yelp
Local historic institution - I had tried the pizza back in 2004 and wasn't impressed. I tried it again now - it's much better (or maybe my taste buds have changed. Cool atmosphere - carryout only. Good service (I ordered for pickup by phone). The pizza itself? Dense. Heavy. They put on lots of toppings, which was a plus for me. The sauce was kinda bland for my taste, but overall a heavy, quality, old school pizza. Oh, and a large can feed 3 people.... minimum

Ryan M.

Yelp
thickest cheese layer ever, hard to even get a slice out lol. craziest cheese pull could be FEET long if we tried. the owner was a great guy and takes pride in his craft, good, genuine guy. wish i could sit down and eat there, i hope the business grows
google avatar

Jason F.

Yelp
*No Dine In Service* You can sit and eat if you really want to, but there are no servers. Too bad because the inside is quite well decorated. Doesn't detract away from anything so don't let this scare you off. Best 'Sots style pizza in the cities. Ample toppings, friendly ownership and staff.

Christine E.

Yelp
Absolute best food!!! Tony and staff always super friendly. Have been coming here for years!

Yelp
A snowstorm couldn't keep me from trying Mama's Pizza. I saw the recent post noting "Mama's Pizza as one of the 100 best pizzas in the USA!" Got to give it a try and it's close by. Hadn't heard about it them prior but like my Mom, she isn't one to call a lot of attention to herself. Called in a take out order and was handled professionally and pleasantly. 30+ mins later I am on my way to pick up my order. I arrived on schedule despite the weather. What a cute little spot on the corner! I was greeted by a lovely lady, Mama?, who was happy to see me. I gave her my name and shared that I was a first time customer. Her co-worker, a gentleman, heard that and promptly rewarded me with a candy bar from out of thin air. So kind! We chatted, laughed and shared some history. She warned me about potential cheese slide and how to prevent it from happening. A truly classic MN small town type of warm welcome and interaction. It's the type of experience that makes you want to come back again even before trying the food. The pizza! The crust was thin and crisp. Lots of cheese, no slide issues, all nicely melted. Square cut pizza slices. The toppings were plentiful and the sauce was perfect in quantity. The flavors came together in a truly satisfying taste - old school, classic pizza! My wife thought they were a bit too generous with the cheese, I disagree. The sauce had great flavor, not too sweet. I really enjoyed this pizza and the whole experience. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Finally found my way here after so many recommendations! I ordered take out for lunch and purchased a small dish of mostaccioli, side salad and the flavor explosion 10" mini pizza. The flavor explosion pizza is unreal and has in my opinion, all the best ingredients: sausage, pepperoni, bacon, pineapple and banana peppers. Even ordering the smallest items is plentiful enough for left overs. There is a spacious parking lot towards the back of the building making this trip seamless. The service is as kind, quick and considerate. I can't speak towards the ambiance because it appears the dining room is closed and there are only take out items at this time. From what I saw, the dining area looked clean, cozy and inviting (there were even some amazing looking holiday ornaments hung from the ceiling). I can't wait to come back again. Thank you, Mamma's!

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Best pizza hands down , Tony is awesome. It's worth the wait when they are busy. Call ahead of time. Great service and great Pizza. Large sausage Pepperoni feeds four adults and you will be stuffed. Thanks Tony we appreciate all the love that goes into every pizza.

Yelp
Ordered two large Lasagnas from mama's pizza for $30 and you would think it would be hot but it was Lukewarm and some parts were cold For that price you would think they would do better fir their customersNext time I'm going to The Little Oven where they have an actual kitchen and make it fresh and food is hot for their customers Called them about it and they acted like it wasn't a problem I'll take my business to the Little Oven where they actually make the food fresh for their customers

Peter M.

Yelp
This isn't hyperbole. Mamas is the best pizza in Saint Paul. Nothing else even comes close. Once you encounter the pizza with its generous flavorful toppings and delightful crust, every other pizza joint's pizza will taste bland and subpar. Try it. The pizza sells itself.
google avatar

Divebabydive G.

Yelp
Wood fired. Perfect crust. The sauce is outstanding. Owners are friendly and mentioned people drive from as far away as St. Cloud.

Sherry S.

Yelp
As always, mamas has the best best pizza! I will occasionally use the fork because it the pizza so loaded with toppings!
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
So I went there today for my first time.I recently came back from Naples Italy and I had some of the best pizza in the world in Naples.I ordered a sausage for my son and a pepperoni and sausage with bananas peppers pizza for me.The crust was perfect the banana peppers were fresh and the pepperoni and sausage was perfect with the right amount of seasoning the cheese is out of this world.60 years in business WOW is all I can say if your within 100 miles of this place you have to go there.

Yelp
Yearly we get together with Friends and Celebrate with Mama's Pizza! I ordered 2 pizza's from Michelle & sides of Pizza Sauce, she did everything EXACTLY as requested As ALWAYS the Food was PHENOMENAL! Thank you Michelle & Mama's Pizza
google avatar

Alan D.

Yelp
I've heard so much about this place and their pizza's. Many, many years. Finally tried it. I wasn't too impressed and did not find it better than other places. I wanted to order two pizza's but wasn't sure with the second one we got. They didn't seem to be too fresh. The thin crispy crusts were somewhat scorched like it had been sitting for quite a while. A lot of cheese though. Not sure I'd try again!

Charles W.

Yelp
Both my son and I are cramping and close to throwing up after eating this pizza. This is the last time I'll order this.
google avatar

Sasha K.

Yelp
This has been a long time staple in Saint Paul. Some of the best pizza I've had. The flavor explosion is excellent, but everything here is very tasty. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
I will preface this by saying we did not grow up in St Paul. We've been in Minnesota for 8 years and all of our neighbors rave about Mama's Pizza so we finally tried it out. My husband got the meatball sandwich with cheese, but it was not what you'd expect. It's like a baked casserole with sandwich sliced bread, sliced meatballs smothered in marinara and covered with cheese. We also got a pepperoni pizza and the cheese Italian fries. Everything was very salty and greasy. The pizza and fries were OK just not our thing. The meatball sandwich was just a huge disappointment. I don't understand why it's marketed as a sandwich. The staff were lovely and neighbors love them so maybe their style of food is your thing. It's just very different.

Mary J.

Yelp
The pizza and cheese bread are sooo delicious! It is one of our all-time favorite pizza places. It's just pick up--no dine-in.
google avatar

Brit B.

Yelp
Incredible pizza, the best in Saint Paul. If you haven't had it... order it for pick up, you won't regret it!

Jim J.

Yelp
Mama's returned from the plague with still the best pizza in the Twin Cities, PERIOD! My wife and I are so happy they did not change their food. It's tops in these parts! Our pizzas yesterday caused us to repeat again and again "It's the best!" If only they could find the staff to reopen their dining room. But that is NO REASON to not order pickup. They deserve our business because they work hard and still produce the best! We drive from New Brighton as we always have and that short drive is worth it in any weather. About 20 minutes. No big deal. I hope the fragrance of the pizza remains in the car till next we order pickup. AWESOME!
google avatar

Martin D.

Yelp
I was in town with my brother from Houston. This is definitely one of the best pizza I have ever had. We ordered a large pepperoni and it was amazing

Billy O.

Yelp
Nice people, great pizza, absolutely deserves your business. The owner has a heart of gold and is worthy of your hard working money. Pizza is good, cheese is gorg and amazing
google avatar

Jolie U.

Yelp
I love the food! This place is my fiancés favorite pizza spot. They are local mom and pop type shop, so if you go there a lot you really get to know the staff. Only reason I took off 1 star is because I miss the dinning area and the ice cream. When you had a full meal (this was before Covid hit though), you would get a free ice cream cup. I also hope if they do open the dining area again, they could put in new small tvs! They are cute
google avatar

Mik M.

Yelp
There are several issues: They have not allowed dine-in since the pandemic. They also have shorted the number of days and hours they are open, not to mention significantly raised their prices
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
My heart belongs to Mama's! I have been a fan of Mama's Pizza since I was a kid. I love getting mostaccoli and meatballs with their heavenly crusty bread. You can order any pastas with melted cheese all over the top (most love it, I just don't like THAT much cheese). Every once in a great while, I change it up and order a special dago (hot dago with peppers, onions, and mushrooms), but that's only when I'm feeling in a not-pasta-mood. And you have to get the heart-shaped pizza on Valentine's Day. I can't wait for them to be open for dine-in again so I can eat my pasta with a bib on and get my tiny ice cream at the end of the meal.

John G.

Yelp
Will the dining room ever open? I read that it's been closed since the pandemic started.. Just curious if it will ever reopen?

Ken R.

Yelp
Called at 11:05 am (5 minutes after they opened) to place a take and bake order 48 hours in advance. I was told by the owner that they were in the middle of their lunch rush and call back when they weren't busy. (How am I supposed to know when they're busy?). I asked him what time would that be? He said about 2pm. My wife called back shortly after 2pm. The phone was answered by a female employee. When my wife explained what she wanted the employee hung up on her.
google avatar

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Another restaurant that I've been going to since I was little. The owner is always amazing generous nice loving. The food has always been amazing, and always cared about how the food comes out. I miss being able to go and eat in because it was always family oriented. I hope everyone still supports this place. It's a restaurant with a heart.
google avatar

MJ H.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with pizza from Mama's!! I have been eating there since High School and I'm 50 now! If it ain't broke don't fix it!!

Tyler v.

Yelp
Owner has a heart of gold and el presidente rates the pizza a 7.5 (good score) , need I say less?
google avatar

Cam A.

Yelp
Arrived and sat ourselves in the dining room. It's a small room but they manage to get a lot of people in their. We ordered two pizzas and two garden salads. Both pizzas had great quality toppings. The rub on the pizza is that it is a cracker crust. It is thin which I like but the crust lacked moisture and flavor. This probably helped the toppings stand out. The sauce was good. My other knock was the salad - it had brown leaves in it. I pulled them out and while I completed the salad it just wasn't fresh. It may be tough to get fresh lettuce in MN, not sure. What was great was the little vanilla ice cream cone at the end of dinner. It was soft, creamy goodness on a sugar cone. Good stuff! I would go back if someone had to go - but not a top choice for this traveller.

Wanda W.

Yelp
Very good food . Clean place and friendly.! The owner is very giving and kind. Love Mama's always good service..... Never have ordered anything and was disappointed! It is all hand made...yummers always !

Yelp
Some of the older traditional pizza places have vanished from St Paul in recent years and this is one of the few remaining. Very warm cozy atmosphere, great food.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Got takeout, the staff are so sweet and helpful. Seriously, the best service I've ever had. I got the stuffed shells and they were absolutely delicious. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Finally, an old fashioned pizza with REAL mozzarella cheese ( special flavor from the outside of the mozzarella ball or wheel that lingers on your tongue) and with a very rare DELICATE smooth sauce that shows hours of patient " stewing" with the soft flavor of genuine beef and natural beef fat. You can tell because of the quiet layers of flavor when you consume the sauce. Most Italian spaghetti sauce today comes from a pre made can with no stewing no beef no genuine spices that have been stewing -- tastes either like an open can of tomatoes or sharp with a small handful of minimal spices. Mama's Pizza has cooked up a very rare traditional "soft subtle" flavor in their "sauce/ gravy". YUM...... An uncle created this eatery 51 years ago.... and it is still owned and run by the family!! This is not the Ritz, this is an old family much loved weathered family neighborhood place. But the bathrooms are shockingly new elegant immaculate with high tech equipped hand blowers etc !! I love places like this, I can truly relax feel 100% myself and really enjoy my meal. The hand made almost sculptural wall frescos of Italian countryside complete with vines and fun parrots show hours of fun love. Veal Parmesan couple of pasta dishes sausages peppers home made meatballs and very nice salads and of course a beautiful antipasto spread. Pizza dough is hand made 1/4 inch approx and mine was a touch over cooked so the crust was hard. It is very hard to create the "queens/ Brooklyn" pizza which requires a SUPER hot oven and high turnover to justify the staggering utility costs. Then you get the thin bottom that is hard and the other side is softer. But for Minnesota and I HAVE BEEN HUNTING for a pizza here for 17 years‼ this is very very very good
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Pizza is excellent, but don't skip the pastas & garlic bread. Old town Italian decor feels great. Thanks!
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
We are a crew of four leaving the boundary waters starving fir good food. We found it here. Definitely get the flavor explosion pizza! Tony and his crew knows how to make a good pizza! Also get some ranch turns out it has more than just one use

Yelp
Adding yet another review for this fabulous Pizza Restaurant! It's been two years since my last visit. I flew from DC to MN to visit my mom and had to get my Mama's fix and it didn't disappoint!! The dinning area was closed due to Covid so we ordered and elected takeout. Even after a 15 minute drive home it was hot! I will be visiting my mom again in April so I'll definitely be back. I use Mama's as my gauge for good pizza. Pizza in DC and VA is mediocre compared to Mama's!!

Yelp
I came here for dinner on Sunday with my husband and toddler. They opened at 4 and we got there at 4:30. The restaurant was already full and lines off the hook with orders to go. We waited for a half hour for a table. I wanted to go to a traditional mom and pop pizza shop and this fit perfectly. There were 16 -20 tables and 2 servers but service was good. There was a front kitchen where the pizzas were made and a back kitchen where the pastas and other foods were made. We ordered a mini Italian fries and a medium (labeled small but it was the middle sized option) pizza, the meat special. I was super hungry. We should have ordered something else for an appetizer so we'd get it sooner. We waited over an hour for the pizza fries and a little longer for our pizza. I thought the food was delicious but over an hour seemed a bit long. I think there should be a separate pizza oven for the restaurant. There should be some priority for dining in. Waiting over an hour was too long for me, or maybe we should have been warned it would be over an hour. Pastas coming out looked pretty delicious. Next time if we go back, take out might be best so I can do something else with my time for over an hour. For dessert they serve complimentary mini cones with chocolate soft serve ice cream.

Yelp
I don't even know where to begin. This place is amazing. We had a big party and it's a seat yourself dining area, but we waited awhile for the perfect table and this guy that worked there asked us how many and he put a table with a booth so we would all fit. Which was super nice because he didn't have to do that. So we sit down and this amazing lady named Gabriela comes and gets drinks for us. She kept them nice and full the whole time. We ordered and she brought us free bread (which was amazing). Then the food came out and BRO it was so good. Me and my husband got a "small" pizza with pepperoni and sausage and a small order of spaghetti with a meatball to share. The pizza was thinner crust (which usually I'm partial to) and it was cut in squares, which really just hits different. This pizza was SO good and it was definitely not small. She also brought both of us huge dishes of ranch, like quality ranch. The pasta was also AMAZING, so much sauce and flavor and that meatball was so good. I think they have a really good sauce recipe that makes everything SO good. So some of us tapped out and got boxes and she even brought a HUGE container for the amazing ranch (obviously we gotta take some home). That's when she's like, y'all got room for the ice cream that comes with your meal? BRO whattttt, like how amazing. AND THERES MORE! We're already and paid (very generous tips) and she brings us FULL CANDY BARS BRO. I can't, this place is amazing. I've died and gone to heaven. This place gets better, we left and our buddy was in food coma, getting in the car when out comes Gabriela, in the cold with no coat. She says hey, you left your box! An ANGEL, I swear. Tip her right guys, she deserves it.

Yelp
In my opinion its one of the best restaraunts in Twin Cities. Staff are friendly and generous. The food is simply delicious. It is takeout only now since COVID. It is the only reason I did not give it the fifth star. I had been eating in the restaraunt since I was a little kid back in the 70s. When I was just starting out in life and didnt have two nickels to rub together I always made sure to set aside enough to have dinner there a couple times a month. I have had all Italian dishes on the menu. They are all excellent - go large on everything. Its like an extra buck. Bread with dinner is great. Pizza is a thin crispy crust. Rich pizza sauce and great toppings. Try it.
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
Mama-you has me at the Italian Bread! It was delivered to our table before any food, perfectly moist in the middle and with a crunchy crust. Then the salads arrived! I thought I had ordered the small antipasto salad (I did-but it was huge). The entrees were served for a small (hungry) army! When I surpassed the "full" mark on my stomach, I asked for a 'to-go' container...they brought a microwaveable container with a ladle full of marinara sauce at the bottom!

Jeff B.

Yelp
This is by far the best pizza with friendly staff who treat their customers and community with the love they have of their delicious food.
google avatar

Nancy A.

Yelp
Mama Mia that's a good pizza! Not sure what makes the red sauce so tasty, but it could be the recipe handed down through the generations as the deal breaker. Small restaurant to eat-in (may be too cozy for some). Take out pizza, pasta, and antipasto for a delicious meal. Nothing beats Mam's pizza. Hands down. Worth the visit to St Paul's north end.

Yelp
Great pizza, fresh and very tasty., take out only but worth it , best in the twin cities.
