The Best Butcher Shops in San Francisco | Eater SF

"“Dave the Butcher” has been slaying meat in San Francisco since 1989, and has served as a meat judge on the History Channel. He hangs up his 19th century knives at this old-school butcher shop in Marina, and he’s taking care of his longstanding customers, with seniors hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon." - Becky Duffett

Google
Great meats ! I always come for meats, fish , crab, sardines, this year also tried a Thanksgiving turkey, great quality - fine bird. Worth every penny !!! Love this local butcher

Patrick Donahue

Google
In general, we really like this place, but bought 2 grass-pastured Mariposa Ranch boneless ribeyes on the 14th and already rotting on the 17th when we went to cook it (stored at 34 degrees). Disappointing. Must have sat on their display for a while.

Grace Lin

Google
Such a cute neighborhood butchers shop!

Mike Chrzanowski

Google
Lackluster customer service, which would be ok if the meat were good. Unfortunately the premium ribeye steaks I paid $36/lb for were not.

Vasi Mikhaylov

Google
It was my best shop for years. Sad to say it but no more, rude guys and poor service.

Felippe Virardi

Google
Perfect! I bought a NY strip and a Wagyu Ribeye… both were simply delicious! Very great place to look for special meats in SF bay

Kevin Drinkwater

Google
Expensive but the NZ Waygyu Boneless Ribeye steaks were absolutely worth it

Eric Lewis

Google
It's pricy, but you get what you pay for, and if for whatever reason the quality isn't what you expect and you're polite, they'll fix your issue.

Yelp
So fortunate to have this upscale market here in the Marina, they never disappoint! We shop there constantly, wonderful. Judy

Yelp
Grabbing grocery- and Costco-quality meat is very convenient and cost-effective, but if you have a little bit of time and a little bit extra to spend, the meat quality you find at Marina Meats will change your cooking. I've been coming here for a couple years now, and I always find myself excited to grab a ribeye or some sausages for dinner. And when you're working with quality, you're more likely to care a little bit more when you're cooking. Never have I looked at a clock while searing a poorly-marbled ribeye from Trader Joe's. But a bone-in dry-aged steak from Marina Meats? I'll count every second it's on the pan. This is also a great place to go if you need specialty animal products- they have an assortment of different bone broths and rendered fats as well. I love coming to Marina Meats, and I'll be back any time I'm craving a steak.

Yelp
The best of the best. It'll cost you - but this neighborhood is not very price-sensitive. I wandered in because I needed chicken breasts and they had Mary's organic, air chilled and of course, delicious. (I did 'em justice in an Indian recipe for chicken saag.) Delectable ribeyes, pork chops and domes of delicious crab cakes just begging to be taken home. I don't know how I resisted. If you demand the best and have an elastic budget, absolutely shop here twice weekly. If you're like me, come occasionally and indulge. Customer service was mmwah, chef's kiss!

Yelp
My husband has been shopping at Marina Meats for two years. I join him from time to time, and I have to say that I am more than impressed. The CRAB CAKES (the original) oh my jesus, they are f'in delicious, I have one for breakfast every single day. It's an addiction!! Don't forget to try their spicy itialian sausage, salmon, chicken, and rib eye steak. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything at this shop, but those are our go-tos. Everyone inside is super friendly and attentive and I won't shop for meat anywhere else at all. We would rather pay for the quality and stay with Marina Meats.

Yelp
When it comes to a local source for meats, this place is hands down what you're looking for. I've been stopping in every week for something new to try-- and my recipes have never tasted better. From short ribs, filet/tenderloin, to pancetta and bacons (clearly, I'm a beef/pork guy), they have had everything I've come asking for. This speaks to the quality and sourcing of their product. Next, is the service from the people working the counter. Unreal, in this day and age! Everybody was clearly dedicated to their craft, and every time I've stopped in, I've been greeted and helped right away. As far as pricing: more than reasonable. Especially considering the quality of the meat. I honestly can't say enough nice things. This place is great!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow the variety in this place was impressive and I wish I could get it all. From pastas to meats to oils and so much more. This place was impeccable and very organized. It was too packed compared with the markets I'm used to but at least everything was organized and in its place.
google avatar

Pamela B.

Yelp
Excellent quality meat and seafood with prompt, friendly service. A true neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Candia M.

Yelp
Best meat market in the city! Love their house made sausages. Reasonably priced and very clean.
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
That romanticized idea of an old school neighborhood butcher you've been searching for? time to put your GPS away and conclude your journey because here my friend lies your St. Augustine. The beef tenderloin makes for a steak tartare so good, one must question whether they've even consumed red meat before. Did I mention live in-season Dungeness crab caught along the California coast upon request? How about local Rock Cod snapped up mere miles outside of the San Francisco Bay. More decadent you ask? Tahitian sashimi-grade tuna may be a little bit more your approach. Oh and don't forget to make the delicate Monterrey Bay squid a consistent part of your diet, because there's currently a growing overpopulation of them (watch: Blue Planet II on Amazon Prime) Bonus: secured in the refrigerated shelf to the right upon entry is the best 'Zingerman's' pimento cheese spread you'll likely ever come by.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Yes love this place for meats, chicken, sea food, they have fresh sardines too and they clean it for you ! So good !! I got pot roast and other cuts and can not wait to try rabbit - amazing assortment!
google avatar

Audrow N.

Yelp
This is my favorite butcher in SF, and I've tried a lot of different butchers in the city. They have good quality and the prices are reasonable. Their chuck roast is the same price as you could get at Whole Food, but the quality is far, far better, in my opinion. Also, in crab season, they'll cook the crab and get the meat out for you, if you ask - so good!
google avatar

Johan S.

Yelp
I was asked to buy freshly made sausage. I don't cook and know nothing about meats. I called Guss and the guy in the meat market answering phone sounded rushed and didn't care to answer my Simone question of: "Hi. Do you have more than one kind of freshly made sausages?". I called this place and the guy who answered the phone confirmed they had several, started to list their variety of selection, and said he just made them earlier. Wowza great customer service! I only go to the Marina once a year (to see the Blue Angels) and drive through if I need to cross the Golden Gate Bridge). I'm a Mission girl and the Marina is a whole different planet for me (no offense to those who enjoy the Marina...we'll agree to disagree). The point I'm making is that I'll return to buy their freshly made crab cakes, Parmesan chicken & sausages! Plus they're friendly, patient, and have great customer service! They have an unpretentious attitude....that alone gives them !

Yelp
This place is my go to place for great and friendly service, knowledgeable and helpful butchers, and the best meat in San Francisco.
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
The quality of the meat and fish here is unsurpassed in SF (and I'm a Bryan's fan). And the service is warm, professional and go-the-extra-mile. Wish it wasn't so hard to park on Chestnut but I will still make the pilgrimage .

Mark K.

Yelp
So they have good meat, but are pricey. I was absolutely shocked today - we walked in and instantly an employee screamed at us "Only three customers in the store at a time! Get out - there is a line!" No signs. No courtesy. No sales from now on. And for the record, there was not a line. If you want your customers to line up, put up signs. If you want to limit customers in the store, put up signs. The one sign we saw was taped on a door that was opened so it wasn't visible and the grammar was incorrect. My final comment is that if you want customers - treat them with respect, clearly put up signs, and don't yell at them rudely. We will go to Little City Meats in North Beach from now on.
google avatar

Jonny R.

Yelp
Good price. Amazing fresh quality of meat. It's my go to spot in marina for beef. Staff is knowledgeable as well. I had some decent difficulty questions about the meats and what cuts I was looking for and they handled my questions like it's their job. Oh wait haha. Back to a serious note. Very friendly. Helpful. Fresh as can be meat. Little salt and pepper and I'm eating a top steak.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
I love this meat store. They have everything you need. Their chicken is really good, too, as is the prepared rosemary chicken in the refrigerated section. They have delicious dog treats. That is what my dogs told me to say.
google avatar

Gregory F.

Yelp
Another wonderful rib roast and successful Christmas dinner thanks to the folks at Marina Meats especially David Budworth! Product here never disappoints and continues to be fresh and of the highest quality. Professionals. Thanks to Steve for the butchering and cradle well done!
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
There are those who say a perfect score is a theoretical exercise, something no real-world entity can ever achieve. Well, Marina Meats put the lie to that theory. They source locally, from producers they know by name. From producers who raise meat sustainably. Need ideas for how to prepare something? They'll provide informed advice. Want to know what else to serve? Same. Yes the price is higher than many. But it is worth it, if you can possibly afford it. Make coffee at home for$0.70 a cup instead of going out and paying $2.50 a cup. Then take your savings and head to Marina Meats!
google avatar

T D.

Yelp
Love this place! Their meat is very fresh. I got some marinaded lamb and it was spectacular. Their chicken breast is also delicious (a bit pricey though). I also bought soup-in-a-bag to try. The pasta e fagioli was pretty good for $7/bag.
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
It's nice to have a butcher shop in the neighborhood. Even better when that shop is staffed by employees who genuinely care about their products and want to help. Combine that with always fresh, top quality products (try the bacon!) and you've got a local gem that is sure to please.
google avatar

Kyrstin G.

Yelp
I have been coming here for over 2 years and I will not buy my meat anywhere else. The quality is truly superb and outstanding. The staff is beyond knowledgeable and friendly. They have the best selection and they have everything. From pig's feet (for my dog) to bone marrow to game hens. Their crab cakes are the absolute best and everything I've tried that's pre-made or marinated is fabulous. I'd definitely recommend this place and do frequently. It is a bit pricey... Extremely pricey actually. But, you get what you pay for and I have no regrets.

Dave C.

Yelp
I love this place for their fresh fruit and meats. The place is clean and the staff always very friendly except for today. I've been shopping here for years bringing in my dog. No one ever bothered me and in general want to interact with her. This guy in the picture told me no dogs allowed to which I replied I have a service tag for her. He asked to see it and I produced it. He was actually rude about it. My lab was on a leash and walking very obediently by my side. Everyone, including the cashiers and the deli staff, saw my dog and didn't bother me. I'd give the place 5 stars except for my interaction with this guy.
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
Another bad experience here today, so writing this review. Stood in the store for 5+ mins as their staff walked back and forth behind the counter ignoring me. (There were no other customers in the store.) I'm okay to pay their extremely high prices but would have liked some good customer service to go with the high prices. Finally walked out and went somewhere else.

Yelp
For my first successful dinner party, I baked pork belly. This fatty crispy pork belly was purchased from Marina Meats and my guests' rave reviews fueled my desire to bake, braise, and broil other tasty pig parts. If you crave fresh pork belly, pre-order 2-3 days in advance. Fresh vs. frozen, you can taste the difference. The same for pork shoulder. They always have baby back ribs in stock so I suggest you arrive early on weekends to beat the crowd and enjoy a friendly chat with the owner, Joey.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Family was in town for the weekend; they wanted breaded veal. Memorial Day, and not many places were open. I stopped at MollieS and what I was offered was less than satisfactory, so I left. I tapped Yelp and discovered that Marina Meats was open. The young butcher was friendly and accommodating. He selected perfect pieces then pounded them to perfection. Marina Meats is truly a first class butcher shop!
google avatar

Brandie Y.

Yelp
YUM. Do yourself a favor, and get your next dinner protein here! Just like an old guy sitting at the end of the bar at 9:00am at Tony NIk's Cafe in North Beach, I'm a regular. And, like that old guy, I'm proud of it. It started when I had to begin eating a Paleo diet to accommodate Hashimoto's. As a part of that, no more GMO meats. What a blessing in disguise. All of it. The beef, pork, chicken, sausages, bacon (mmm, bacon) is all exceptionally great. Oh, and the fish!! And, the staff is awesome. They all know their stuff. And, I find them very helpful, even when confronted by some of the somewhat (ahem) snootster-type clientele that sometimes tend to frequent the place. You'll be happy you did. So will your tummy.

Yelp
Sometimes making a home cook meal is the healthier choice and can be rewarding. So, the other night I felt like making my own meal. I was fortunate enough to have this wonderful grocery store near by me. The next closest grocery store is Safeway (aka Date-way) and I didn't feel like walking 30 minutes to get grocery. Best thing about this place is that everything has all organic product and has high quality produce. They also have the best meat in town. The price is a little more expensive but that's what you pay for organic products. They also have a deli section with pre-made food. I never tried but I heard its' good. This place is small and super organized. They have everything you need to make the perfect meal :)
google avatar

ERICA E.

Yelp
Marina Super is going "Bryan's" by expanding to a separate location for their meats and specialty foods. They have a great selection already, and with this expansion, I'm sure that they'll be even more tasty delights to buy. It's in the midst of construction still, the sign is up and hopefully they'll be open before the holiday season. Support the local businesses! update 11/15/07 They're now open!

Mike T.

Yelp
Hands down the best market for meats. Its a short drive from Marin, well worth it. Dave and Nate are always willing to freshly cut anything I may ask for! Great customer service you don't find these days! You can tell that they actually care about getting you the best product. Always consistent and never disappoint!
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Very Rude and unhelpful staff. Asked about 2-3 questions today and got an attitude from the young man with black hair that was working the cashier desk this evening around 5pm. I asked simply more about the meat and how the prepared meats were prepared. It's the least he could do for the overpriced meats sold here. Taking my business elsewhere.
google avatar

Gwynnie P.

Yelp
Since ye olde fashioned butcher shoppes are few and far between in our fair city, I find it hard to complain too much about the high-ish prices at Marina Meats. They have a good selection, and everything you might need to put together that nights dinner (a few veggies, some pasta, baguettes) but mostly meat and poultry. I'm a little disturbed by other reviewers noting the same, ungloved hands handling cash and cow, but not enough to stop me from going back.

Yelp
MM definitely has its pros. For the most part, it offers good quality meat and products. I particularly love its marinated tri tip. HOWEVER, MM has wronged me one too many times. My hubby and I host a Thanksgiving dinner party for 20-25 of our friends each November. Every year, we order a FRESH, NOT FROZEN turkey a few weeks before the big event - typically either from MM or Whole Foods. This year, we ordered from MM. Per usual, we made it VERY clear that we wanted a fresh, never-been-frozen turkey. Per usual, we were ASSURED that that's what we'd receive. Yet when we picked it up, the bird was frozen solid. W.T.F. If I wanted a frozen turkey, I'd go to Safeway and buy one for 50 cents a pound - not the $4.00 a pound I pay at MM for an allegedly farm-fresh high quality turkey. What gets me is that this is the SECOND year that MM has sold us a frozen turkey when we requested a fresh one. Both times, the employees disavowed any responsibility, and tried to assure us a frozen turkey would be just fine. Thanks for your two cents, dude, but when I pick up a turkey the day before my event, and had planned on brining it for 18 hours, it will NOT be just fine. I have to let the little f-er thaw before I can brine it. Duh. Both years that this happened, the employees were unapologetic and did not offer a discount or any other concession. For an allegedly high quality meat store, this is a big no-no. I guess I'll stick to other specialty meat stores in the future.

Yelp
Went in a couple of times before purchasing to see whose meats they were carrying. Seems like each brand had its own glossy brochure to go with it, but none seemed that "special" compared to my usual purveyors, Golden Gate and Marin Sun Farms. They do not dry-age beef in-house (which would be a really great move in this neighborhood), nor do they carry true pastured chicken. The housemade chicken sausage I bought was very bland and disappointing, they were drastically different sizes, and WORST of all, each of the ends were all wide open! Thus, when cooking, the contents bled all their juices into the pan, so they were dry instead of being sealed up and moist. Boo!
google avatar

Lucy B.

Yelp
The other night at around 7:00 pm I went in for fish. There was a kid pulling the curly parsley garnishes out of the cases and off the meat. As he reached in to grab the pieces in the front of the cases, his hair brushed across the meat and fish he was leaning over in the back of the case. UHG! ARE YOU PEOPLE KIDDING ME? THE HORROR NEVER ENDS.
google avatar

Taylor L.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I came here last night to get something for dinner. We got crabcakes, which were bomb ($4 each)! We came in right as they were closing, but luckily they kept it open for us. Marina meats has great quality meat and seafood, the shop is clean, and the staff are friendly. Also, the guy offered us a few baguettes since he didn't want to throw them out. I'll for sure be coming back!
google avatar

Delf M.

Yelp
Very questionable handling practices..... It could be a great neighborhood place for meat and fish as they have a nice selection and very decent price. Unfortunately, I don'y like at all their handling practice, serving meat and fish bare hands (after touching money, credit cards....) but they just don't seem to care. I am not a hygiene freak but, come on, we are in 2011 and those practices should not exist anymore (btw, it is the only place where I see this happening). I told one of the guy once (a young one) that I was surprised by the fact he was not using paper or gloves. He seemed a little bit embarrassed but told me it was the way they were working.. Went another time to buy COOKED prawns, and same thing happened again with an older guy, touching my prawns bare hand just after cashing the prior customer .... Now, I am not going anymore... Pitty!

Yelp
Driving on Divisadero on the way to the Marina and saw this market. Stopped in on the way home and picked up a Panko Breaded Chicken Breast. Huge and so tender and juicy! Two of us split it with some vegetables. Best I've had!!! Good price too! I'll be back for some of the other delights i saw in the cases. Bon Appetite! Follow up edit. I've returned a few times and got the crab cakes and the shrimp cakes. Both are awesome. I love their chicken breast marinated in olive oil, rosemary and parmesan cheese. Yum!!!

Stuart K.

Yelp
Great quality meat, wide selection, and fresh seafood. Slightly expensive for some items but there are also some surprisingly good deals and the more expensive end items are always delicious. They have a wide range of consistent staples, but also rotate in some surprises - picked up a 3.7lb tomahawk ribeye for only $12/lb the other day, absolutely amazing. Stop by Marina Market a few doors down afterwards to grab veggies, then swing by Marais bakery for fresh bread and you have an outstanding meal.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
What beautiful cuts of meat! I felt like a kid in a candy shop, resisting the urge to clap my hands gleefully in front of the displays. Oh god. I think that officially signifies that I'm old. Next thing you know, I'll be just as excited about Tupperware... Came here yesterday and picked up some nice pork chops that were so flawless I didn't want to cook em'! Not only does Marina Meats have a vast selection of meats & poultry, but they also have a mini produce section with fingerling potatoes, shallots, & spinach. How thoughtful! They also have a few displays with all types of sauces, pasta, and a freezer full of yummy goodies for later. The staff there is very knowledgeable and friendly. Don't be afraid to ask them for tips! It looks like I'll be makin' this my weekly stop for my meats! p.s. Their logo rocks.

Kate W.

Yelp
Paying $9.99 lb. for a small farm chicken at Marina Meats did get us anything that paying less money for a chicken would have gotten us. We wish it would have. We are in search of a small farm chicken with superior flavor. The chicken we purchased at Marina Meats for top price tasted like any other chicken. The man who waited on us was very helpful. I had no problem with the service. Nor is it untypical to pay more for small farm and receive no difference in taste.

Yelp
Right. Well, I have my moments when I just blah, blah, blah. That sort of goes along with a) living too long, b) having too many experiences, c) being insanely bored and making up things that seem interesting for lack of better things to do, and d) thinking I'm Douglas Adams and somehow these Yelp! posts will translate into a radio series and a five book triliogy. Erm, well, right, on with the review then... So, Marina Meats. This is a new joint in the old hood (tut, tut). Crap I feel old. Anyhow, the insanely great meat counter at the Marina Super (my emergency milk supplier) has now moved down the block to a new corner location that's classy, spacious, and all about the meat. Mmmmmmmmm, meat. As a midwestern boy, if there's one thing I know, it's meat. And this place has got THE MEAT (if you know what I mean). ;) But seriously, it was nice to have a neighborhood joint that left its doors open after normal closing hours, and still welcomed walk-in traffic and served up meat and fish that they'd already covered up for the evening. I found this utterly refreshing, and a first in my ten years here. I've talked to some locals about how the Marina used to be a nice, friendly, blue-collar Italian neighborhood filled with families and mom-and-pop shops until the '80s, and this place is a great throwback to that era. I will definitely come back here again. Whereas most places would lock their doors and say "sorry, we're closed", the guys working behind the counter were more than helpful in picking out the goods I'd need for the stellar hot-pot I was going to serve up the next day. The jumbo shrimp were HUGE, and the cuts of meat looked OH-SO-NICE. Like I said, if there's one thing I know, it's meat. (And, well, I know more than meat, but I have to prop up the 'ol stereotype to get some "funny" reviews, ya' know? *wink* *wink*) When I'm in need of fresh cuts, I'll no longer think Safeway - it's going to be Marina Meats. Check it out. You definitely will not be disappointed. And when you think you need some nice cheese and wine to go with your meat, head on down to Lucca Deli a few blocks down on Chestnut - they'll do you right. Now, hopefully MM will have some fresh Sea Bass so I can do some justice to that Gordon Ramsay recipe I just hooked up with tonight! :)
google avatar

Yelp
This place has everything you want in a high end butcher shop (and while I would like for it to cost less- I understand that it can't). The quality of meat/fish/poultry is unbeatable, and the people working behind the counter are incredibly knowledgable and helpful. This is THE place to get the protein for your amazing home cooked meals! *Mary's Air Chilled Chickens are where it is at for a whole chicken. Yes, it will cost you upwards of $30, but when you think about what you get for that, it is not so bad: 1- Chicken Dinner 2- Chicken Livers (pan fried...YUM) 3- Homemade Chicken stock, and the subsequent Chicken Noodle Soup! Bonus: They have burrata and baguette... head 2 doors down to We Olive for a bottle of amazing olive oil, and you have yourself one killer meal.

Yelp
Bought $50 worth of Lamb Chops last night. My wife looked at the price and gave me the "you can get these at Trader Joe's, you know, look" but you can't get THESE lamb chops at Trader Joe's. They were incredible. The hit of a little dinner party for an old friend. Got our Turkey there last year, will get it there this year too. Joey, the owner is a lifelong Meat Market guy, he grew up in the business and the proof is in the product. Eat less and eat better.
google avatar

Mimi T.

Yelp
Marina Meats--would have made a good name for any of the cheesy bars on or off Chestnut St. While I am not a fan of cheesy pick up joints, I am a big fan of nice cuts of meats...red meat, white meat, ground meat...and if I don't have to get my hands dirty handling the meat..even better. That's why I am pretty stoked that this extension to the Marina Super is now located on the corner two blocks from me. So far I've had a nice cut of fillet and some sausage perfect for breakfast..and so far so good. I am withholding one star for now because I think they can beef up on some nice accompanying products..but hey they are only a few weeks new...

Yelp
High quality meats and seafood. Staff is extremely knowledgeable! I had a lot of questions when I first went and the staff member could tell me what farms they use and what makes their products sustainable. Very impressed.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Great local butcher shop on Chestnut Street, with excellent service. You can pick up really great quality meats, which are surprisingly not that expensive. I'm looking forward to shopping here more.

Jason B.

Yelp
What I really wanted wasn't on the menu - chicken breast marinated in their house teriyaki sauce. They had chicken breasts. And they had teriyaki sauce, but no where on the menu did the two come together. Until I asked. And shortly there after, this really friendly worker was put the two together, vacuum sealing it up, and sending me on my way back to the Mission with a dinner I was excited to make. That chicken was outstanding, and so is Marina Meats.

Yelp
I've been coming here to get good quality meat for a while. It's comforting to know that what I'm spending my money on is high-quality and tastes wonderful. The crab, fish, and beef is incredible. Last night, we went to grab some ground chuck for pasta, and I cant tell you how fresh it was. The grass fed beef tastes way better, and its lean. We went in right when they were about to close, and they were completely welcoming! I love this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot to pick up dinner and last minute items and the staff is friendly! I was actually a bit surprised when I made a few purchases here that the prices are actually pretty decent! The crab cakes are delicious and they have pre-marinaded meats that are great as well!
