Yelp
Right. Well, I have my moments when I just blah, blah, blah. That sort of goes along with a) living too long, b) having too many experiences, c) being insanely bored and making up things that seem interesting for lack of better things to do, and d) thinking I'm Douglas Adams and somehow these Yelp! posts will translate into a radio series and a five book triliogy. Erm, well, right, on with the review then...
So, Marina Meats. This is a new joint in the old hood (tut, tut). Crap I feel old. Anyhow, the insanely great meat counter at the Marina Super (my emergency milk supplier) has now moved down the block to a new corner location that's classy, spacious, and all about the meat. Mmmmmmmmm, meat. As a midwestern boy, if there's one thing I know, it's meat. And this place has got THE MEAT (if you know what I mean). ;)
But seriously, it was nice to have a neighborhood joint that left its doors open after normal closing hours, and still welcomed walk-in traffic and served up meat and fish that they'd already covered up for the evening. I found this utterly refreshing, and a first in my ten years here. I've talked to some locals about how the Marina used to be a nice, friendly, blue-collar Italian neighborhood filled with families and mom-and-pop shops until the '80s, and this place is a great throwback to that era. I will definitely come back here again.
Whereas most places would lock their doors and say "sorry, we're closed", the guys working behind the counter were more than helpful in picking out the goods I'd need for the stellar hot-pot I was going to serve up the next day. The jumbo shrimp were HUGE, and the cuts of meat looked OH-SO-NICE. Like I said, if there's one thing I know, it's meat. (And, well, I know more than meat, but I have to prop up the 'ol stereotype to get some "funny" reviews, ya' know? *wink* *wink*)
When I'm in need of fresh cuts, I'll no longer think Safeway - it's going to be Marina Meats. Check it out. You definitely will not be disappointed. And when you think you need some nice cheese and wine to go with your meat, head on down to Lucca Deli a few blocks down on Chestnut - they'll do you right.
Now, hopefully MM will have some fresh Sea Bass so I can do some justice to that Gordon Ramsay recipe I just hooked up with tonight! :)
