"One of the best ways to experience Los Angeles, to me, is pulling up to a food truck on a busy street and plopping down on a plastic stool with a spread of half the menu. Not all food trucks are built the same, but one definitely worth scoping out is Mariscos El Faro (which has locations in Highland Park and Culver City). You’ll find seafood splendors galore — from octopus cocteles loaded with diced cucumbers and a Clamato broth to zippy tuna tostadas and Baja-style fried fish tacos. My favorite dish of the bunch were the empanadas de camaron, a crispy pocket of shrimp and cheese topped with a sliver of avocado that’s especially good with lashings of hot sauce. "Mariscos El Faro is a Sinaloa-style seafood truck that will convince you to stay well past your 30-minute lunch break. Located outside a park off Figueroa, the truck sets up a few tables and stools on the sidewalk where you can enjoy an ice-cold michelada, fresh oysters, and their signature aguachile in a Clamato-y sauce with big heat from crushed chiltepín chiles. This Highland Park food truck parks on a quiet street beside a park flanked by shady trees. "For a decade, this Highland Park truck has been parked at the same quiet public park, making it a perfect spot to grab mariscos to go or stick around for a long lunch when you want to play hooky. A lot of the flavors in El Faro's michelada remind us of the tangy salsa roja found on the truck's signature aguachile, which has a refreshing tomato-heavy, clam broth base we're really into. These miches are never too salty or spicy because they're definitely more "chela" than mix. That's fine with us, especially on an afternoon at the park—errr, we mean lunch break." - sylvio martins
