The Best Ramen in Portland, Beaverton, and Beyond | Eater Portland

"This Pine Street Market ramen stall focuses on ramen and fried chicken, offering vegan counterparts to every ramen on the menu. Interestingly, several bowls on the menu involve a dollop of mapo tofu (with ground pork for those who eat it and without for those who don’t), which is a fun touch that surprisingly complements the tonkotsu broths and thin noodles. Any bowl works well with the house-made chile oil." - Zoe Baillargeon

The Best Vegan Noodle Soups in Portland | Eater Portland

"Newer to Portland’s ramen scene, this Pine Street Market stall offers a solid selection of vegan options. Diners can snack on fried popcorn tofu and shishito peppers before diving into bowls of rich shoyu slicked with black garlic oil or the fiery vegan red topped with mapo tofu. Bowls arrive with an array of creative toppings, including marinated tofu, collard greens, corn, and green onions. Customers can also find seasonal specials, like vegan pumpkin tantanmen with miso-pumpkin tare and roasted butternut squash on Matsunoki’s menu." - Waz Wu

Google
Best of them all! My daughter and I are on a mission to try every Ramen in the Portland greater area, and after 20+ other restaurants, Matsunoki is at the top of our list. The Spicy Red Ramen (I add corn) is my favorite. I also tried a piece of chicken (it came with green curry sauce), and it was excellent. But really, the star of the show is their Ramen.

Absolutely loved the food here!! Not a ramen fan but this place has become a favorite. The menu boasts of a variety of options to choose and customize from. We ordered vegan Tokyo shoyu, vegan spicy garlic ramen and Singaporean chilli crab. 3 different spice levels, distinct flavors, all yummy. Decently prized, good quantity of food, value for money place. The staff is super helpful in further customizing the already flexible menu based on your needs. Tokyo shoyu and Singaporean crab were moderately spiced , the vegan spicy garlic ramen was the showstopper. I highly recommend this place

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bold Flavors & Generous Portions – Ramen Done Right Matsunoki Ramen in Portland served up one of the most satisfying ramen experiences we’ve had. The portions are huge—definitely come hungry. The broth is rich, the noodles are perfectly chewy, and you can customize your bowl with flavorful add-ons like their house chili paste, which adds a great kick without overpowering the base. We also ordered the shishito peppers, which were incredible—flash-fried, perfectly salted, and served with a chili dipping sauce that made them addictive. Seriously, don’t skip them. The ramen itself was hearty, flavorful, and comforting in every way. One bowl felt like a complete meal (or two!). It’s the kind of food that hits the spot and leaves you thinking about it the next day. Total comfort food with great execution. Highly recommend if you’re in Portland and craving ramen with serious flavor and serious portions.

Google
I wanted to give this place a great, five-star review. Honestly, the food WAS good. BUT i found some metal/wire (looked like a bent up staple) in my ramen. The very first bite of noodles that i took, I felt something hard, and when I pulled it out of my mouth i was immediately in shock. It nearly sliced my mouth open, to be honest. The young lady working the counter was very polite about it, they made me a new bowl and gave us something of our choice off the menu to take home. But ultimately, finding metal in my food kind of ruined my whole families experience here. I can understand mistakes, I understand stray hairs here and there maybe, but that I never would have expected. I live with autism and eating is already extremely difficult for me, I almost refused to eat the replacement bowl, but accepted that it’s probably a one in a million experience, but I was on edge every bite and quickly lost my appetite. Like I said, the food was good, but a mistake like that could have caused extreme bodily harm or even death. I almost have that first bite to my little brother to try it, and I am very glad I didn’t. My family and I, and this restaurant, are all very lucky that no actual physical harm was caused. I hope that whoever made my food is more diligent in the future.

Google
With attention to detail & an array of amazing items - this team crushes it. I was so blown away by the customer service & atmosphere. The food - top level ramen. Haven’t found better in Portland!!! The Spicy Garlic ramen was so flavorful.

Google
We love coming here for Ramen! Lots of vegan options. They have other places to grab other snacks or meet a group that way everyone can have what they want. Love the bar in the center of it all!

I got the Taiwan style vegan ramen with extra spice. It was AMAZING!! The tofu was deliciously marinated. I will be back! Pictured is the soft shell crab ramen, also delicious

Google
Pretty mid ramen. Daughter and I ordered the black garlic shoyu and spicy garlic ramen. The cashier was super sweet and the vibes were good and welcoming. Both our bowls were “bursting” with flavor, as in way over seasoned/way too much salt. First few bites were good but the deeper you got into the bowl, the more boring it became because it lacked depth. The pork belly was really chewy and hard to break apart unless you used your hands. The egg was perfectly undercooked with soft yolk. The noodles seemed a little undercooked as well. I saw this place recommended on a random Instagram post claiming it’s one of the best ramen spots in Portland. I find that hard to believe.

Yelp
Ramen was a bit lacking. Got the spicy ramen which was not spicy but that is to be expected due to everyone's palette. Could/should give an extra side of spice in most cases then. Ingredients were very lacking. A single bland pork belly. Whole egg was not marinated either. They almost got it done right, half the egg was fully cooked, usually you want it still very liquid. Other than scallions, no other toppings which would be expected. No mushrooms, seaweed, corn, bean sprout, anything? They did have some bits of tofu which was good in its own right but could have added a crunchy component by using hard tofu instead of soft. Service did take a while to make however it was the first bowl, so that may be a good or bad sign, haven't decided yet. Everything is self serve and bussing. I do like this pine st market cause there are several shops in the same building that you can order and then eat it all together. Unfortunately, it takes about 30-45 mins before all the shops are ready to take orders so don't get there too early. Service great. Ambiance was meh, meant for quick eat and go. Can see the place getting crowded and noisy. Overall, a good time, but likely won't be back for ramen but will try other restaurants. Others weren't ready to put orders so only had ramen. Happy eating!

Yelp
Atmosphere: Matsunoki sits in a nice food hall with ample seating, bar, water station and restrooms Food: While I had read some mixed reviews, I found this ramen to be quite enjoyable. One of my preferred ramens in Portland. Would definitely come back for the food Price: Standard for ramen Service: Little bit inattentive at first but otherwise fine Parking: Street parking

Yelp
Hands down my favorite place in Portland to get vegan ramen! I love bringing friends here because they have non vegan and vegan options. The staff is always friendly but they are often busy so if you're looking to take your ramen home, I recommend ordering ahead. My favorite is the vegan spicy garlic ramen! So full of flavor and wonderful spice level. Located in the Pine Street Market - We went on a Saturday evening and dined in - the trash in the Pine Street Market was unfortunately over flowing and smelled bad. The tables were dirty so I had to wipe a table down using napkins. But please note that I am rating Matsunoki Ramen 5 stars because their food is phenomenal!

Yelp
Second time at Matsunoki. It's located inside the pine street market, a food hall with a variety of delicious restaurants and a bar! I was disappointed by this visit because I thought that the vegan red ramen was bland, and the tofu was a bit sour. I would definitely try again because my first experience was positive.

Yelp
We wander here after checking Waterfront Cherry Blossom trees. This is located at 2nd and Pine in an indoor food hall. Lots of good food choices to choose from. I ordered a Chili Crab Ramen bowl. Came with one crab on top of my ramen. There is an egg in there with some greens and tofu and thin noodles. Very flavorful and delicious. Came out hot and spicy. Mild and flavorful. The soup was delicious. Great for cold rainy weather.

Yelp
My gf and I came here for wing week. The inside is really cool. We decided to sit at the counter, and got to watch the chef prepare and that was fun to watch. The wings were fantastic, and had the most amazing rice bowl I've ever tasted. The pork belly though. How do they get it so tender! 2024 most tender cut of pork goes to Matsunoki Ramen. Will def be back

Yelp
Stumbled upon this ramen while visiting Pine Street Market. I love these types of food halls with so many options in one spot! Tables a little dirty and flies near the bussing station. We got the Tonkatsu shoyu ramen, spicy tonkatsu, and fried tofu. The sauce for the tofu was enjoyable, and on the side which was great for the kids. The tofu itself was crunchy and flavorful. I would get it again while we are waiting for the ramen. The tonkatsu shoyu was a bunch of green onions, one piece of cha siu, and one full egg. The egg wasn't as flavorful as we like but still very good, my son ate 3 eggs. I kind of appreciated that there wasn't a ton of veggies (filler) in the ramen as some other places do. The cha siu was a bit too chewy for my younger son but I enjoyed it, as did my older son who ate more than his one piece. He liked it soaking up all of the soup. The soup was definitely the highlight -- it was extremely flavorful and a bit thick, really excellent broth. My husband got the spicy version of this ramen and didn't like it as much. Stick with the tried and true I say! Service was fine, nothing special. I would get it again if I was in the area. Plenty of street parking available early in the morning and at early dinner (around 5:15-5:30pm), though I also see multiple parking lots nearby. Free self-serve cold water available. There's also restrooms which require a code.

Yelp
Thick noodles. Great flavor. Nice spice/heat. Plus, you get to watch them prepare your meal! Check this place out if you like ramen! Also, the gentleman who prepared the meal wanted our feedback on the ramen- which was a lovely touch.

Yelp
It had been a long time since we had been to Pine St. Market downtown. There are less restaurants now than when we used to go and it wasn't overly busy. I got the vegan pumpkin ramen that is a seasonal dish. It had large thin rectangles of tofu, pumpkin, pumpkin seeds, what looked like collard greens in a spicy broth. I'm not sure what the broth is spiced with but I tasted star anise that verged on bitterness. It lacked salt though so I went back and asked for salt or soy sauce or whatever they had. I was given a teeny amount of a salty liquid (not sure what it was) but it want enough. My husband was sweet enough to go back and ask for more. I understand you can always add but you can't take away, but a good chef always tastes their broth and knows how to season it well. I just couldn't finish all of this because I got tired of the taste. I don't think I'll be back. The workers were friendly though.

Yelp
I was feeling the need for fried things and decided to get the chicken tenders. The staff were all friendly, and the chicken was clearly freshly fried. It was just quite dry even with the sauce. I feel like it just needed a little less time in the fryer. The portion size was quite sumptuous and flavors were otherwise good.

Yelp
Visited Portland for the weekend and happened to stumble upon Pine Street Market. There were a lot of food stands and I'm so glad we chose Matsunoki! Their ramens are OUT OF THIS WORLD!! I got the Tantanmen & my partner had the Spicy Red Ramen. Both are just so delicious. You know that a ramen is good when you do the first broth sip and you just melt. The chashu had the perfect sear and it's really what makes or breaks the ramen. It sparked me and my partner's search for the perfect ramen in Seattle. We just started our journey today and realize that the bar that Matsunoki set was high.

Yelp
Wanted to see what this ramen stand at Pine Street Market is like after being taken over by a new owner. Got the Tonkotsu Shoyu ramen and while the broth was good, the overall bowl felt like it was rushed. Also, the toppings were a bit boring: just a slab of cha shu (was pan fried nicely though), an egg, and tons of green onions. No other vegetables or greens or garnishes. Also, the egg was cold inside, so you know it was done before and dropped in without thinking of warming up, and what really turned me off was the slight flour taste to the noodles. This usually means they didn't rinse their noodles before cooking or they didn't rinse it properly and was probably rushed. The overall menu seemed like it really catered to the tourists with the deep fried foods like popcorn tofu and fried chicken, but I felt you can get more interesting ramen elsewhere in town.

Yelp
A new ramen spot in town, part of the Pine Street Market. All their ramens sound and look super good. It's hard to choose but I went with one of their Winter Specials which was a Black Truffle Ramen. It came with a thick slice of Pork Belly, Mushroom, and Truffle Butter. Super unique combo but worked very well. Their broth was flavorful but not too salty. A good balance of truffle. Noodles were on the thinner side but very well-cooked. Ramen egg was also great, albeit a bit cold. Their Pork Belly was seared until crispy on the outside but still very tender; never seen a place done this before. I was happy with my order and they're kind enough to re-make it when it came out cold the first time. Solid staffs and service. My partner got the Black Garlic Shoyu Ramen that also hit the spot especially the copious amount of black garlic oil on top. This place is definitely contending for best ramen in town for me!

Mikael G.

Yelp
People were very friendly, willing to take orders and chicken was great with the curry sauce

Zoe M.

Yelp
I used to eat here quite a bit and it was always very good.. but every time I pop in the girl there working is always touching her hair, and face and touching the food without gloves.. kinda makes me grossed out witch is sad because I've always loved this place:(
google avatar

Jinny C.

Yelp
Unassuming ramen spot in a food hall but it was absolutely delicious! I got the spicy red ramen and recommend it - the mapo tofu topping was a good touch and the broth is very tasty. The chashu, egg, and noodles were all done perfectly. Service was friendly and pretty fast before the lunch crowd. The food hall is large and well-decorated with plenty of free seating. Bathrooms available as well

Yelp
I have ordered from here several times. The staff and owner are super nice and have good customer service. I am on keto and they have always tried to accommodate me. Food is great too :)!!!!

Yelp
This place honestly hits as a 3.5 for me and if it wasn't for the delicious popcorn tofu and sweet service...I would have ranked this a solid 3.0. I dropped by with a friend on a weekend and surprisingly found parking right by Pine Street Market woohoo! It's nestled inside with a few other eateries and honestly so cute! Definitely casual but also had a warm, welcoming feeling. We knew we wanted to get the popcorn tofu and the shishito peppers but were both debating what to do for our ramen. The specials were all pork based so swayed away from that but I loved the sound of the vegan spicy garlic ramen whereas my friend somehow got the tantan men but with vegan broth. First off, the popcorn tofu was the clear star and I would absolutely have them again. Shishitos were good and the dipping sauce was nice but nothing super interesting or new. I would say that the noodles themselves were good and the broth was spicy.....but also so freakin salty. I'm all for flavor but good lord I wanted to POUR water into the broth to make to palatable for me. My friend liked her ramen but also said it felt like there was something missing. I just could not overlook the salt in my ramen and felt like it absolutely detracted from the overall dish and experience. It's a bit of a toss up as to whether I'd go back here -- maybe for the popcorn tofu but I'm a bit wary of the salty ramen that made me chug water when I got home AND when I woke up the next day.

James G.

Yelp
Ramen was very bland even after adding fake soy sauce and hot oil. Chicken strips was over cooked and definitely over priced. Never coming back nor recommending to anyone.
google avatar

Rohit S.

Yelp
Great ramen! Ordered the spicy ramen it really hit the right spice levels !! Also the chicken is great

Nana S.

Yelp
I was excited to go try the ramen and fried chicken, but left quite disappointed. My boyfriend and I both agreed that the black garlic shoyu ramen was very bland. There was no flavor to it other than the garlic even after adding their version of soy sauce. The jumbo chicken tenders were burnt. It blows my mind how the chef was fine with serving burnt chicken. Frankly, I wanted to throw the food away. This was the worst ramen I've ever had.
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
Nice place for a quick stop! Ramen broth was rich and flavorful, meat was good, maybe a little charred. I feel like there could've been more toppings for the price I was paying though. Still overall solid experience, I'd come back if I was hungry in the area.

Robert W.

Yelp
Spicy ramen was AMAZING. The two guys working were very pleasant as well. Place is in a small food hall with several food options.
google avatar

Gerard Y.

Yelp
I was planning on grabbing a burger nearby but I walked by the food hall which this ramen place was at. Not sure why others mentioned the soup base was salty but that wasn't the case with the tonkotsu shoyo I ordered. Loved the piece of thick cut bacon that came with this ramen which added to the pork flavor of the broth. The chicken strips were pretty bomb. Can't put the exact description of the flavor but it was great.

Aaron C.

Yelp
Today we ordered a crispy pork belly curry rice bowl and a chicken sando. What we got was a curry rice bowl with no crispy pork belly. When I brought this missing protein up to the cashier..he verified with the chef that there was no protein in the curry rice bowl. I thought I was seeing things. It clearly states on the 48 inch TV, CHOICE OF PROTEIN. The cashier proceeds to state that there is an up charge. I only see an up charge on Fried Chicken Tender. This is bad business practice, so therefore I am writing this review in hopes of this restaurant improving its customer service or at least update your menu to say CHOICE OF NO PROTEIN. To top off the lunch, our chicken sando was RAW and chewy. At this point we had given up hope. A food thermostat should've been used to check the chicken. Unacceptable.
google avatar

Duong N.

Yelp
Decent ramen spot with strong bold flavors. Loved the char on the pork and the chewiness of the noodles. The black garlic is the most popular order and it was great; however, the match ramen didn't give any hint of matcha which was a bit of a let down. The food comes out quick and if you have a seat by the window you can enjoy the sunlight between each bite!

Susan D.

Yelp
They don't serve food by your order number, while by their preference. Order number later then my got their food ready ahead of my, while just told me my food would be ready in 15/20 minutes. Really was wasting my time. Do Not Recommend!

Yelp
This ramen was delicious. We were adventurous and tried the seasonal pumpkin tan tan men, and it was awesome. Great place for ramen!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and got the spicy miso. It was delicious - exactly what I was hoping for. The wait took a bit, but it was worth it. I'd definitely come back again.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was amazing. We had their black garlic ramen and spicy garlic ramen. It was packed with flavors and on point. . Service was fast and friendly. It is located at Pine Street Market food hall. We would recommend this place to anyone that likes being in downtown. Amazing place!

Christina I.

Yelp
Long wait but the food was definitely worth it. The ramen was delicious and so was the rice bowl.

Jason W.

Yelp
This place is the worst ramen place I've ever been to I had the cashier with tattoos complain about how I talked and ordered and he didn't even try to be quite about it I was having a terrible day so my tone was off a little bit but that doesn't mean you sit there and talk shit and then when I got my food and got home it was as hard as a brick it wasn't even enjoyable I ended up just throwing it away cause of how misconstrued it was I did end up eating the egg and the meat which was the only good parts in it but I would not recommend eating here unless u just want there egg and pork

Jessica G.

Yelp
Horrible service. We were told they were no longer taking orders and running out of ingredients. Shortly after we saw a line forming and asked what was happening and the person at counter claimed they told us they had only stopped taking orders at the moment which was untrue. He did not apologize for the misinformation or seem to care.
google avatar

Erin F.

Yelp
One of the best bowls of ramen I've ever had. I'm particularly fond of the black garlic shoyu. I get a bowl every time I visit Portland.

Oliver M.

Yelp
My favorite ramen spot still!! Try the pumpkin ramen it's back and so delicious. Everyone was really nice too and the cooks know what they're doing fr.
google avatar

Clare Q.

Yelp
Stopped by today to try the ramen inside Pine Street Market. The food court set up is super helpful for groups or when you're hanging out with a friend and need a little space. Waitstaff was very helpful and super kind, but it was all really salty. I know, ramen is salty, I am aware. But our food was practically ruined by a heavy hand. I ate my ramen which was absolutely delicious under the super salty profile, but our fried peppers were off the rails. Everything was beautiful and well presented and I have no other issues, but yikes on bikes I need to not have a heart attack when I go to lunch folks.

Jaden M.

Yelp
ROACHES! Food was good but the restaurant was filthy! I got a TanTanMen ramen and my husband got a rice bowl... throwing away our trash and saw multiple crawling inside and around the cans

John S.

Yelp
10 out of 10 amazing food definitely recommend the curry. The chicken was phenomenal. The staff there was amazing and the waiter were amazing as well.
google avatar

Vladislav T.

Yelp
Came here with the wife and we are both from Eastern Europe and have had all kinds of Asian cuisine. This place is a solid B. Pretty good and the price is fair. The selection is not extensive, but what they have is tasty. Like I said, a solid B... maybe even a B+. Good job! :)
google avatar

Mollee C.

Yelp
Delicious Ramen! The employees are fantastic and accommodating with your order. I love the pork belly and the Vegan popcorn Tofu is SO good. Love the location inside the Pine Street Market, plenty of seating.

Lily S.

Yelp
The service and food is awesome here. I can not imagine how the workers do it. They are always kind no matter how overwhelming and busy the environment is. The food comes out timely and is always awesome. I almost always get the vegan ramen and it is always soo good. Very very yummy vegan options. Love to go on dates here with my meat eating boyfriend too lol. Something for everyone for sure.
google avatar

Suyoung L.

Yelp
I actually went there to have Marylin Ramen without knowing it's no longer there so it started with a bit of disappointment but I decided to try their ramen anyway. I ordered Black garlic shouyu ramen and it was great. Soup was perfect, noodle was perfect, and chasyu was perfect. Minus one star for too much of burn prices in the soup from either garlic, or chashyu. Every time I bite, Burt pieces over powered the taste of soup, I didn't like it.

Derric B.

Yelp
Came in tonight hoping to get some good ramen ... maybe the crew was short staffed or something but... 1) I paid with cash for Tonkotsu Shoyu ramen, they would not give me a receipt (that I need since I am traveling for work) and 2) as I write this review I have been waiting over a half hour for my order. Based on service alone I would not recommend this place. Update: I did receive my receipt And I finally got my order. The food is good but I can't give a rating higher than 3 stars. I think service could have communicated that they were a little behind or short staffed beforehand so folks could temper their expectations
google avatar

Melsomar R.

Yelp
First time here. I must say the broth is good however for the price, i think the meat should be more. I was just a like 3x2 inches piece of pork belly and half of it is fat. Also to mention, the meat is not tender, had to pull it with my chopsticks while biting on it. For the price, i'll buy again if they have more meat and noodles.

Micheal C.

Yelp
i found a fucking earbug inside my fucking food when i got home this was the worst food experience ive ever had!
google avatar

Max S.

Yelp
Literally the best ramen outside of Asia I've ever had. Spicy garlic ramen is incredible. Amazing place, support this gem!

Jordan W.

Yelp
All the positive reviews have to be from people who haven't had decent ramen before. Everything was practically flavorless and the texture of the Tonkotsu broth was very underwhelming. Plus it just came with egg, noodles, meat and broth -- didn't even come with any toppings. There's WAY better Ramen in town for around the same price.
