The Best Sushi Restaurants In Boston - Boston - The Infatuation

"Matsunori focuses on temaki-style sushi, and first-timers here should get the savory sweet miso-cod. Torched and caramelized, the fish tastes almost like honey, and comes served over just a pinch of rice that’s all tucked into a crisp piece of nori. They also have great options like spicy tuna with a bit of crunch from fried sweet potato and A5 wagyu rolls with beef straight from the owner’s farm. They get busy around 7pm on the weekend and don’t take reservations, but you can usually walk in and grab a spot at the bar." - tanya edwards

"Matsunori serves temaki-style sushi, which typically consists of rice and a piece of sashimi or other toppings wrapped in nori and served as a handroll. The handroll options are plentiful, from crab legs to A5-grade wagyu from co-owner Kevin Liu’s farm in Miyazaki, a prefecture known for its highly coveted breed of wagyu. Delicious. Love the umami flavor combinations in the hand rolls, and especially enjoyed the salmon cups. Portions are relatively small, and if you order more of the premium hand rolls, price can be quite high. But each hand roll is generously stuffed with large servings of fish. Nothing especially fancy except premium, high quality ingredients.

We were super excited to try this spot 🤩 It has a very cool and casual vibe. Perfect for a low-key date night, rather than a special occasion. Note there are no alcaholic drinks and the menu beyond hand rolls is fairly limited. The hand rolls are delicious and the fish quality was excellent! The portion sizes are on the smaller side. We had 8 hand rolls each, and still left hungry. Fun and tasty experience but be prepared to order extra and spend more if you’re hungry! Recommendations: Miso Cod, Blue Crab, Spicy Tuna, Uni, and Scallop!

Google
Matsunori truly exceeded our expectations! They accommodated us with a last-minute reservation, and the service was top-notch. The food was fresh, delicious, and expertly prepared. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, making it a perfect spot for a special occasion or just a night out with loved ones. We're so grateful for their flexibility and hospitality. Highly recommend Matsunori Sushi Place for a wonderful dining experience. FYI dont order too much! I think maybe 1-3 rolls is good enough

I’ve always wanted to try out this place and finally got to visit with friends. We loved all the hand rolls we ordered — well made, tasted good and good portion, none of them disappointed us. The price is a bit too high but it’s worth it. Wait time could be long and not too many seatings inside.

Google
My first time here. Not much indoor seating but more seatings outdoor. Server was kind and frequently checked on us. It's pricey but menu offered a variety of handrolls. Be mindful that the portion size is quite small, and you need to order like 4 at least to feel like you had a meal... The appetizers (edamame and seaweed) had slightly bigger portion size and were shareable. It's a nice place if you want to try the experience of eating some specialized Japanese handrolls. Would just budget ahead :)

Google
Best place to go for Japanese food. Handroll bar is rare is Boston, this one provide great service and fresh ingredients. Not a lot of seats, just a few tables with the counter seating. There is always a line if you are not the first group to arrive each evening. But I would say it’s worth the waiting. I’d prefer this over some of the omakases in Boston area, some of those are expensive and you can’t get enough to eat. Miso butter cod is a must try, However, there are a few dishes that I would avoid, for example the shrimp tempura, it’s heated with air fryer😅. The wagyu is awesome, so is the uni. Unagi is also great.

Google
Matsunori delivers on high quality hand rolls that justify an often lengthy wait time. I would love to see a set menu in the future though. Food: All of the hand rolls were very tasty and really highlighted the fish with nice crisp seaweed and well-seasoned rice. The yellowtail was our favorite for its flavor and the texture added by the rice puffs. Though the others were also very good especially the miso cod, I wish more of the rolls had a texture element since most of the fish was minced. The only disappointed bite was the salmon cup. The cups the salmon was in were super dry making the whole bite really dry for a salmon cup. Service: The service was pleasant overall and we didn’t feel too rushed despise the consistent long wait times. One issue I had was that the appetizer came out much slower than the rolls themselves and I wouldn’t actually liked to have them as an appetizer. Additionally, I think a set menu would be great for people coming for the first time or an option you don’t need to overthink. Atmosphere: It’s quite a crowded place but it was still easy to have a conversation. The interior was clean and unintimidating.

We had a fantastic experience at Matsunori Handroll Bar! Every roll we tried was fresh and flavorful. The mango salmon roll is a must-try — highly recommended for its perfect balance of sweetness and richness. We also enjoyed the toro mushroom, mango shrimp tempura, and California roll — all were delicious, but the mango mushroom really stood out with its unique flavor combination. For appetizers, we had the salmon cups, which were not only tasty but also beautifully presented — super cute! We ended the meal with matcha tiramisu and tea for dessert, which were absolutely delightful — not too sweet, with a rich matcha flavor. On top of the great food, our server was very friendly and made the experience even better. Overall, everything was excellent — fresh ingredients, thoughtful flavor pairings, warm service, and a lovely vibe. We’ll definitely be back!

Yelp
A quick glance at their Google page or Yelp reviews will tell you that this is not going to be a cheap dining experience. I was tempted to just load up on their cheaper options so that I could get more food for the amount of money, but after trying different rolls from both their "Classics" and "Signatures" menus, I realized that their Signature rolls are worth the extra few dollars. I was honestly surprised by how filling the handrolls were. I would recommend starting with only a few per person and ordering as you go. I started with the blue crab mentaiko roll ($11). I'm usually not the biggest fan of cooked crab on sushi, so this exceeded my expectations! The crab was tender with a light natural sweetness to it, and as you can see from the pictures, a good portion. There was some subtle saltiness from the mentaiko, but I would say that the flavor of the crab was the main focus of this roll. I got the salmon ikura roll ($11) next, which was probably my favorite roll. The marinated ikura had such a savory richness that coated every bite. I also appreciated that I could taste the rice and nori better in this roll than the previous one. Their rice has the perfect balance of sweet and sour vinegar to complement each handroll topping. The nori was brushed with a fragrant oil, super crispy, yet sturdy enough at the same time to hold all of the fillings together. I wanted to try some of their classic rolls so I got the yellowtail ($7.5) followed by the salmon ($7.5). These rolls had a generous portion of fresh, buttery fish, but just could not compare to the Signature rolls I tried earlier. I felt that the extra sauces/flavorings/toppings in the Signature rolls made for a unique experience whereas I could get a good quality yellowtail or salmon roll anywhere else. With these rolls I got the chance to try their soy sauce, which had a nice nuttiness to it. Finally, I still had a little bit of stomach space left so I went back to their Signature menu to try their ankimo jelly roll ($11). The ponzu jelly had a very strong yuzu flavor and made the flavor profile of the roll sweet. The monkfish liver on its own had a very mild flavor. I think this roll would be great for people who are huge fans of yuzu but personally I was not expecting something this sweet. Overall, I had a nice experience here and think it deserves the hype it gets.

Yelp
The best hand roll place in Boston/Brookline Food: Highly recc the foie gras hand roll- it pairs beautifully with the apple compote and melts in your mouth. I had 3 of these! They run out fast so order it first Also highly recc the miso butter cod- heavenly tender Other noteworthy hand rolls- salmon (amazing, classic, mango, spicy- the fish was huge and so fresh), botan ebi ikura, toro mushroom (bluefin tuna belly) Salmon cups were ok- too heavy on the mayo Love getting a seaweed salad as a pairing with my sushi anywhere I go Other: Friendly staff, fast service Chic sushi bar vibes Try to go on the earlier side as wait times later on can be up to 90 min (plus they might run out of their signature rolls) TLDR; Satisfy your next craving for sushi at this place!

Yelp
After seeing how many times Matsunori Handroll Bar was recommended to me and popping up on my Instagram feed, the elusive, no reservation spot definitely caught my attention. Despite getting stuck in Boston traffic on a Friday night keeping us from going right at opening, we ended up waiting about 45 minutes for a table for 2; not as bad as I was expecting! My husband and I shared 4 handrolls (since we had later night dinner plans same day), and really could see the quality and attention to detail on each of the hand rolls. The staff was friendly and accommodating, despite the small waiting space options available. Our four handrolls were the following. Miso Butter Cod (10/10) - very flavorful, seared beautifully, very happy with the taste of this one Toro Mushroom (10/10) - my husband's top one that he kept wishing we could order more of. He's not usually a Toro seeker and enjoyed the mix of mushrooms with tuna together Botan Ebi Ikura (7/10) - while delicious, the lasting taste felt underwhelming and forgettable compared to the other handrolls we got (miso butter cod and toro mushroom felt better tasting) Yellowtail (6/10) - this was the first hand roll to come out. As soon as I took a bite, my body unfortunately reacted because an allergy for scallions was missed. While they fixed it right away, for the level of quality promoted by the restaurant I was disappointed at the miss. The irony being we were sat next to a certificate for allergy training as well. Most of the rating here was due to this missed allergy note causing me a reaction. When they did fix it with a scallion-free hand roll, it was very good. Freshness and quality are there for Matsunori Hand Roll Bar. Totally can see why many come here. Game plan to wait if you're planning on dining here (especially in winter when it's cold out and no room inside to wait). I'd come back and rate it differently if we could fix the allergy issue and know that the team would be more careful on ensuring those dietary needs are met.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite hand roll place in Boston! I've been here many times and it never disappoints! It does usually get pretty busy during dinner time because it is a small restaurant but it is worth the wait! They have a nice selection of hand rolls on their menu. I always get the salmon cups as an appetizer, it's so good! The salmon is so fresh with a crunch from the cup! For hand rolls this time I got the mango salmon, spicy tuna, yellowtail, miso cod, scallop, and mushroom toro. All of the fish were super fresh and melts in your mouth! The nori stays crispy when you eat it as well! I loved all of these but my favorites are the scallop, miso cod, and mushroom toro! The size is on the bigger side compared to other handroll places I've been to and I was pretty full from 6 handrolls. It is a little bit pricey but it's totally worth it!

Yelp
I am unsure about Boston's 14 Best Sushi Restaurants, but the food was incredibly fresh, and the rice was flavorful. We came here for another quick bite after dining at Kenzoku Mazesoba. After being added to the waitlist, we waited about an hour. - Blue Crab Mentaiko* $11.0 Blue crab, onion, garlic butter, mentaiko, cucumber, scallion - Toro Mushroom* $17.5 - Bluefin tuna belly, BBQ shiitake mushroom. - A5 Miyazaki Wagyu $17.5 A5 Japanese kuroge wagyu. Add hokkaido uni- $9.0 I had never seen this thick toro in a hand roll before, and it was super fresh, even though it was not the best part of the toro. The wagyu was flavorful but overseasoned and torched, it ruin the wagyu but the uni was super sweet. There was no room for their dessert since we waited at Kyo Matcha while waiting for our table.

Yelp
Delicious hand rolls. Highly recommend this place! Tiny place so be prepared to wait or go early.

Yelp
I recently visited Matsunori Handroll Bar, and the food was incredibly fresh and delicious! - Akami Jelly: Lean tuna with ponzu jelly - Miso Butter Cod: Black cod marinated for 72 hours, served with homemade miso butter cream - Spicy Scallop: Scallops topped with spicy mayo and masago tobiko - Scallop: Scallops with cucumber, sea salt, and lime zest Plenty of street parking options outside and around the block -- best to go when there's no Red Sox games!

Yelp
Matsunori is a clean modern but chic sushi/handroll bar in Brookline. We loved its minimalist wood aesthetic which made this place feel relaxing and cozy. We got here at opening and were seating almost immediately. The service was fast and efficient. Server/staff were all so friendly and attentive without being too overbearing with our party of 4. She was super sweet and even offered up mochi ice cream after our dining experience. As for food, they by far serve the best hand rolls I've had in Boston! The quality of fish is so fresh and buttery. The Toro was beyond my expectations, very meaty (a nice thick cut) and extremely buttery that melted in your mouth. It was my absolute favorite. The fishes are so fresh that you don't even need soy sauce! It's already so tasty. You can tell they took their time to thoughtfully craft their menu and rolls which were incredible in flavor. We also got the wagyu and uni hand rolls which was a unique combo rich and creamy in flavor. The botan ebi Ikura was nice and sweet with the perfect tender but chewy shrimp texture. This place does an amazing job at bringing out the natural flavors of the seafood and not overpowering it with anything else. It was an absolutely delightful experience to dine here.

Yelp
Still amazing, salmon mango was creamy and soft while toro was extremely tender and flavorful. Crab Mentaiko was interesting but not my favorite, still def recommend!!

Yelp
The best hand roll place I've had! I came with a party of 5 a little after they opened, and we ended up having to wait 1.5 hours to be seated because of limited seating inside. The wait turned out to be 100% worth it. I ordered around 6 rolls, and my friends ordered 4-5 rolls each. Each roll offered a distinct flavor, and the seafood was all extremely fresh. My favorite was actually the mango salmon roll. The sweetness of the mango balanced perfectly with the salmon itself. I thought the amount of food would not be enough; however, 6 turned out to be more than enough to make me full. The waitress was extremely attentive, frequently checking in on us, and she did a great job remembering all of our orders. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have visited matsunori so many times (my first time at a handroll bar was kazunori and I loveeee) and I am obsessed with matsunori!! I'm so happy we have it in Boston. Today, I was served by Bach, and he's the sole reason why I wanted to write this review the second I sat down. He is so sweet and very attentive and no exaggeration, I wish he could be my server everywhere I go!! The food is good too :)) Haha, seriously the food is amazing. Super fresh and it's worth the visit. Parking is tough and they don't take reservations, but I've never had that hold me back on visiting here unlike other places. I will always come here and hopefully we get to see Bach again!
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
Amazing service, great food, fun ambiance. Highly recommend. We really enjoyed the miso black cod roll and the fois gras roll. Bach was a great server!
google avatar

Yelp
Really delicious option for handrolls! The portions are quite large with lots of fish in each roll! The fish also seemed really fresh - sit at the bar if you can, they have really quick service. We were in and out in probably 30 minutes. The classics were our favorites - the salmon, yellowtail, and tuna! The crab was just okay.

Yelp
I have been eager to try Matsunori -- last time I tried to walk-in (they don't take reservations), it was a 2+ hour wait for two people. This time, we went when they opened at 5pm on a Thursday and easily got a table...though the tables had filled up by 6pm. My overall takeaway is this is a good concept with fresh ingredients and solid flavors, but the high prices make it less appealing. With one hand roll (2-3 bites) at ~$10-15, on the whole the meal felt less satisfying and satiating -- you probably end up paying slightly more than an average sushi meal. However, the ambiance and service were great, and their complimentary ginger and fresh grated wasabi were highlights! Food: 1. Chawanmushi (3.5/5) 2. Seaweed salad (4.5/5) 3. Wagyu beef hand roll (4/5) 4. Spicy tuna hand roll (3/5) 5. Mango shrimp tempura hand roll (3.5/5) 6. Blue crab hand roll (4/5) 7. Miso cod hand roll (3/5) 8. Mango salmon hand roll (4/5)
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
Miso cod handroll had me dreaming of this spot for days!! Everything was so solid and they bring out pieces one at a time so nothing gets soggy. It's also a crazy good bang for your buck and they are generous with their portions, so 3-5 handrolls will def have you stuffed! Service was good and the staff were very attentive and good at explaining the menu. Unfortunately, they were out of a few specials by the time we went (Sat evening), so I'd recommend swinging by early, especially since they don't take reservations. They also won't accept waitlist by phone so you'll have to put your name down and walk around (there's a Ten One nearby for any boba lovers since Shinmio was closed!!). Ambience is cute and good for smaller groups - it's minimalistic with not a lot of seats but the atmosphere makes for good conversation (not too loud or crowded). Overall a great experience and would highly recommend!
google avatar

Gustavo R.

Yelp
WOW! We came here due to its nearness to our Air Bnb... not expecting much - BUT DANG! It's soo good! Food? Each handroll was a 9/10 at least!! Service? They were super helpful, kind, and quick! Best kind of service! Ambiance? Like a typical handroll bar.
google avatar

Yu Ya H.

Yelp
Have been to this handroll bar twice and I would go there again. Not many seatings and they don't take reservations so there might be a wait on weekend nights but the flow is fast I would say. The place has good lighting and ambiance. Their menu has a variety of handrolls from classics, signatures to specials. My favorites are the spicy scallop, A5 wagyu with foie gras add on, and ikura. The rolls are decent size and so fresh! Their appetizer, especially the chawanmushi, is a must try. It will definitely add up with the number of rolls and the add-ons. But this place is worth a visit and splurge since there aren't many great handroll bars in Boston.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
Pretty long wait but area has other places nearby areas to go while waiting. Inside is clean small neat space. Feels casual classy Hand rolls are a decent size! Got the mango salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and miso butter cod. Would say the mango salmon had the best texture and flavor bc of the nice pop of mango and smooth buttery salmon Yellowtail and butter cod also had great flavors! Was full enough on four hand rolls The fish is very fresh and nice, as is the ginger, wasabi and soy sauce! Only thing is that I think since a lot of the fish is mashed up in the roll, it loses some of the nice textures of sashimi. Otherwise solid place!
google avatar

Narie S.

Yelp
Always a great time. Never regret coming here for a few rolls. The portion of protein is great for the price you pay! MUST TRY MISO BUTTER COD ALL TIME FAV. Service is great, place is a bit on the smaller side. So be cautious of when you come as there might be a wait. Overall best sushi place in Boston (:
google avatar

Baran K.

Yelp
The food overall is phenomenal, although I definitely liked the raw dishes more (compared to the baked cod, for example). The vibes are hectic since the place is so small, but honestly I think that's the charm! Service was good, nothing special either good or bad.
google avatar

Manfred S.

Yelp
Very delicious fish. Much better than most want-to-be sushi places. Super efficient service in a pleasant environment. The only shortcoming is the lack of a liquor license. A nice cold, dry sake would have perfected the meal. Scallops, toro mushroom, botan ebi ikura, miso butter cod, and truffle avocado stuffed me happy.

Yelp
I loved this place. Came here on a Friday night after work with friends for dinner (group of 3). We were able to get seated within 20-30 mins, and just walked around the area and went to H-mart in the meantime. We sat at the bar, which was really nice. The space is space but didn't feel crowded or loud. Sitting at the bar, the service was so fast over the counter. The food was great. The menu had 3 tiers: classic, signature, specials. The prices ranged from around $7-17 for the tiers. We tried from each level and loved everything we had. The salmon cup appetizer was nice and flavorful, really loved the crispy phyllo cup with the salmon. The hand rolls were all great, and loved how crispy the nori was with the warmer rice. The fish was all fresh and so good. The standout for the night was the miso butter cod. The group loved it so much that we ordered seconds for everyone. It was sweet, savory, rich. Just delicious. They were good portions as well. Definitely recommend for anyone who was thinking of trying!

Yelp
Honestly, a great handroll experience in Boston and.. beyond! Staff were attentive, food came out quickly, everything tasted fresh, and the price was pretty decent for a sushi place. I tried a lot of different handrolls, but their OG cod was definitely amazing. They do have a smaller space and don't take reservations, so I'd recommend going right when they open!
google avatar

Stanley U.

Yelp
This was by far one of my favorite sushi experiences in my life. (I've had sushi in Japan) the service was attentive and everyone was very kind. Recommend you to go at open or you'd be waiting for the next available table! Small knit, modern and sheik. Will be coming back :)

Yelp
I was really excited to visit this place after trying it in NY! The Boston location is pretty small but charming. I went on a weekday at 6:30 pm and was able to get seatings right away but there was a surge after 7! While the interior boasted beautiful decor, I yearned for dimmer lighting to enhance the fine dining ambiance. The brightness and escalating music, especially with the growing crowd, detracted from the experience. The youthful servers, seemingly in training, tended to our needs. The food, though good, fell short of my high expectations. Notable mentions include the 72hr aged cod roll, silky steamed eggs with ikura gel, lobster roll, and a delightful off-menu seafood miso soup, discovered through another waiter. The oversight of my server not mentioning it left me perplexed, but the soup's warmth and richness, abundant with clams and shrimp, concluded the meal on a positive note. I got 13 items in total to share between 2 people. 4 of the items were appetizers and 9 rolls. I would say to get full, you would need to spend around $90 per person with tip and tax and this is coming from someone who doesn't eat a lot.

Yelp
A must-visit for sushi enthusiasts! This is one of the spots I recommend to out-of-town visitors and newbies to the Boston area. There's a solid variety of rolls with all being fresh and absolutely delicious. The specialty rolls are inventive and well-balanced. My personal favorite is the miso black cod handroll. The wait can be a bit long since they don't take reservations, but it's worth it in my opinion. Service is always quick and efficient and the interior is sleek and modern. I will say that it can get a bit pricey but you will be absolutely stuffed after 4-5 handrolls.
google avatar

Vy T.

Yelp
What We Ate: A variety, but always the miso black cod, spicy yellowtail, and spicy tuna hand rolls Would Recommend? Yes Consistently tasty and high quality hand rolls. Fish is fresh and well prepared, not minced into oblivion. Come early or be prepared for a bit of wait.

Yelp
Hand rolls are delicious! Foie Gras, OG Miso Cod, and KBBQ Wagyu Handrolls are all worth ordering. Service is attentive and ambience is cute! Will definitely come again.

Benjamin C.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem with an impressive menu that balances freshness and creativity. The Spicy Scallop and Spicy Tuna rolls delivered bold flavors, but the real standout was the Miso Butter Cod--perfectly tender and bursting with richness. We also loved the Salmon Mango roll, which had a refreshing sweetness that paired beautifully with the salmon. The Salmon Cups were another must-try, offering a delightful combination of creamy, zesty, and savory in every bite. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared, definitely a spot worth coming back to!

Kylie O.

Yelp
Food, service, and ambience were all incredible. Super tasty and very fresh handrolls (our favorites were the spicy tuna, OG miso cod, and eel with foie gras), with good music that wasn't loud enough to interrupt the flow of conversation. Dessert was also phenomenal. Our server, Bach, was very kind and attentive. We'll definitely return!

Yelp
Matsunori Handroll is a small location right outside of the Fenway area. Perfect for a date or small celebration, you may have to wait if you have a large party, but we were seated within 20 minutes with a party of 3. Price point is on the higher side, but it was well worth it. The service is quite well, with them explaining and checking in on our needs throughout the night. I tried the Chawanmushi. It had a nice Ikura gel layer on top of it that gave it a silky feeling. The salmon cups were light and had a great flavor. The highlights of the rolls was definitely the fatty tuna and the Wagyu. They presented us with a certificate showing where and how the cow was raised, and the wagyu was tender and soft. Overall a great experience, on the more expensive side so this would be a place I go to only for special occasions, but well worth it.

Yelp
Finally more approachable sushi options in Boston! Have been here a few times now and have been pretty satisfied overall. Food: overall the bill can add up, considering you'd want at least 3-4 rolls to start feeling full, but there are rolls under $8 which is great pricing for Boston. their classics (tuna, salmon, yellowtail) were solid with interesting additions that didnt take away from the fish (rice puffs, scallion, etc). the signatures/specials were also quite good as well - especially the miso butter cod, which has become my girlfriend's favorite. FYI these have more intense additions so expect less fish-forward and more interesting flavors. *would highly recommend the chawanmushi (savory egg custard) as a starter. warm, savory, and the perfect way to get hungry for sushi. Ambiance: small, low-key spot. can sit at tables or counter-top to see the chefs doing their magic. Service/logistics: usually a bit of a wait. would recommend putting your name down as early as you can and walking around H-mart or japonaise to spend time. service was smooth overall. Overall a very solid handroll place and a welcomed addition to the Boston sushi scene.

Yelp
Lobster -wish it was warm, flavor was good but temp threw me off (personal preference) Fois gras - BEST bite of the night, would come back again just for this. Steepest price tho, but not awful ($15? Check me on that) Miso cod -so yummy Mentaiko crab -ok, as expected Ebi, salmon handroll -not memorable Eel -great, hard to mess up in general Rolls r a good size, I actually start feeling full around 3-4. No res, walk in only but wait has always been okay or non existent :)

Yelp
Love the place, particularly for that nothing similar exists in the area! They have a variety of rolls, and we like most of them. Favorites include crab, cod, and uni. The appetizer steamed egg and salmon cup are also great. One thing I don't like a lot is that they rush to take the tray used to hold the rolls away, like within seconds you take your roll, so you get interrupted frequently. Another thing is the place is small. when the tables are separated to seat multiple 2 people parties, it's extremely hard to get in and out from the seats - might be cozier to sit at the bar instead if available.

Yelp
I walked in. I almost sat down at the bar, but the smell of old fish stopped me. I debated what to do. I looked around, took a moment, and decided I could not eat here. I have been warned to not eat at sushi places where you are engulfed in the old fish smell. I hope this improves for others.

Yelp
First time trying this spot, and I was very pleasantly surprised! The hand rolls were delicious I especially liked the miso butter cod, salmon ikura and the spicy scallop! The Chawanmushi was also a great app, I loved the flavor of the ikura gel. My only improvement would be with timing of the hand rolls- they brought them out pretty quick and before we had finished the previous one so it was sitting getting soggy while we finished the previous roll. Other than that it was a great experience and will definitely be back! Excited to now have a go to hand roll spot in Boston

Yelp
Yummy. First of all, I think the price per person is probably about $50-75. I see dating couples ordering more and more hand rolls. Three pieces, even when you're not that hungry, doesn't seem like enough for these hand rolls. Also, the fact that they're so tasty doesn't help. One question, out of annoyance, and also curiosity, is what are the chefs/servers rationales for separating orders of twos? They should go together so that parties ordering such can enjoy the same dish at the same time, no? That's not how they do it though. They just mixed it up, which defeats the purpose of telling you to eat the individual piece served right away -- while the seaweed and rice is still warm and the meat is cold, or vice versa. I'm curious about the rationale and encourage the owner -- who's been active on replying to reviews -- to comment. Thanks for reading!

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Service: 4/5 Waited around 45 minutes for a table at 7:30pm on a Monday night. Cute ambiance and very clean. Service is fast and efficient. Everything was average/good, nothing stood out. A lot of the rolls were plain and didn't have any distinctive flavors, except for the A5 Wagyu with fois gras and apple compote. It was the perfect pairing, I ordered this twice. However, I wished the beef was more seared. I don't think I would come back since everything was just plain, but my friends loved it for the simplicity. For the price I didn't think it was worth it ($440 for 4pp). The handrolls are decently sized with good rice/topping ratio and generous with massago. Service was fast, so the seaweed remained crispy. Our group loved the shrimp tempura with tamago (ordered 6). The scallop botan ebi was fresh. The miso cod was decent. I liked how their soy sauce was less salty. The salmon was low quality and the yellowtail was mashed to a mush, which was unappetizing. I appreciated that the fish was super cold though. The botan ebi was very small. The A5 should have definitely been seared more. The spicy mayo wasn't spicy at all, more mayo than anything, which was a little disappointing. Our server had forgotten 2 of our rolls. Husband and I tried: -truffle edamame -salmon cups -shrimp tempura -spicy + regular salmon -spicy yellowtail -botan ebi -miso cod -lobster -A5 wagyu + fois gras

Yelp
Unbelievably amazing ! I will definitely dream about these hand rolls and crave them. I'm blown away by the quality, presentation, taste and the extremely affordable prices. Every single bite was amazing down to the wasabi and ginger. I truly appreciate them delivering quality handrolls without charging an arm and a leg like most of the places out there. It really speaks volumes of the amazing humans running this delicious handroll bar :) The staff were exceptional nice and attentive. I loved the ambiance as well! :) I can't wait to come back

Yelp
I loved the food and I want to go back already! Everything was so delicious and fresh. I liked how they had a specific caviar menu with a few different options. The A5 wagyu was so delicious!!!!!!! It came with an authenticity certification after you order. Everything was so good I'm sure you wont be disappointed. Just a little pricey, but not overpriced. Service was really good as well, no complaints. Very busy still went at 8pm and still had to wait 45 min for a table for 2. Went by quick tho, just walk around Hmart or something. It will go by quick!

Yelp
Underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, it's good but definitely not worth the price. Spicy scallop was just ok. I preferred the uni, miso cod, and sweet shrimp. Good place to try once.

Yelp
As a sushi enthusiast, I was quite pleased with my first hand roll experience! Matsunori was featured on the Boston Eater blog, which is how I stumbled upon it amongst the other dining options in the area. Limited hours and no reservations means this place fills up fast - we arrived at 4:45pm and there were at least 4 other parties waiting as well. This is definitely not a place you will want to sit and catch up with friends. Service is extremely fast and the servers were very attentive in getting orders out, filling up waters, and moving away used dishes. Handrolls come out one at a time, and once you finish one, the next one comes right out. As for food, price did not seem to be indicative of which was our favorite. Overall, the best rolls seemed to be in the signature category with the spicy tempura shrimp and miso cod being our favorites. The wagyu and toro mushroom were good - but could have been elevated by being seared. Sadly, they did not have the matcha tiramisu either. Overall, it is worth a visit for the unique menu and good food. For those who are looking to solely appreciate the fish, ordering sashimi or nigiri at another place may be a better option.

Yelp
Wow! First time here. Were from CA and the food here rivals any spot in LA. My favorites were the miso butter cod and the foie gras. So rich and buttery. Next time we visit Boston, we will be back! Great service btw. Very friendly. Food was out quick too.

Yelp
A simple concept with very good selection of handrolls. Not much like it in Boston area. If you are in the mood to get handrolls with good choices of protein, Matsunori may be your best bet. The space is small with some wait but the turnaround is pretty quick. Service was efficient but not rushed. They serve the handrolls one at a time so you can savor the flavors of each roll. We had a good mix of proteins on our rolls. I would say the stand out is definitely the cod, eel, and sweet shrimp. The flavors were just right with no overpowering of seasonings or char from the torch. The chawanmushi was also very good. We probably could've had a full bowl of it. The price is Boston rate so don't expect it to be a cheap meal. But I will say it is all worth it.

Yelp
I don't know how to say it except: this place has the best wasabi I've ever had in my entire life. Something about it made me devour more of it than I've ever had anywhere else. Are the handrolls good? Impeccable. Delicious. Perfectly portioned. Is the service dependable? Attentive. Spot-on. Looking. Is the place swell? No booze at the time I went, but who knows what has happened in the whirlwind of two months. Other than that, nice vibes and great Bearbrick collection. Regardless of the booze (which may be outdated as I write this right now), I need to circle back and admit that my infatuation for this place is derived from how amazingly gracious, balanced, and sweet their wasabi is. I had to ask for wasabi refills three times one sitting because I just had to get more. You see the photos I've posted, you see the photos others have posted--these things taste as good as they look. I can talk for ages how good these handrolls are and how nothing on the handroll menu is a dud--but if I can convince you to get out of your comfort zone it's to just appreciate that green stuff and let a new chapter begin with you. I miss Boston heavily and I think of these handrolls and the wasabi deeply within my homesickness.

Yelp
Seen Matsunori for the first time on instagram before they first opened. I was intrigued so I followed them right away to see more info, it was nice to see that it would be a handroll type restaurant cause they're normally in NYC or California. They open 5-10 so we went around 4:45 to make sure we found parking and waited. We were the first ones there but it filled up fast. Note: they don't take reservations so it's first come first serve. The interior is beautifully decorated and very modern. I wish the space was a little bigger - but it's Boston so what can you expect haha. Quality and taste cannot be beat. Everything was 10/10! The seafood was super fresh and came out very fast. Rice to topping ratio is perfect and the portion is great as well, not too big or small. I wasn't too concerned for the price but it does add up very quickly because you don't necessarily get full unless you have at least maybe 4-7 handrolls. Their matcha tiramisu was to die for. I still crave it all the time I want a sweet treat.

Yelp
Food was absolutely amazing everything is so fresh and the service great! The rolls came out quick after placing the order. We ordered 6 rolls each and it was so filling. Honestly 4 rolls is enough to be full but we wanted to try more since there's so many delicious options on the menu. The decor is simple and clean :) and the desert is very subtly sweet which is great.

Yelp
Legit these handrolls were so good, especially the miso black cod which basically blew my mind. The fish was incredibly succulent and slightly sweet.. just look how it glistens.. Also enjoyed the KBBQ A5 wagyu and blue crab but not as impressive. Decent size rolls with yummy sushi rice. The wagyu one is smaller (and more expensive) than the others. Small place and no reservations so be prepared for a wait. Quick service once you get a seat.
