The Best German Restaurants and Beer Halls in NYC | Eater NY

"The name says it all: This is the place to try what is perhaps the city’s largest selection of German sausages — including the fairly obscure kalbsbratwurst, geflugelbratwurst, grobe bauernbratwurst, and scharfe bauernbratwurst — paired with German brews. Tired of sausages? Grab a plate of kartoffelpuffer, light-as-air potato pancakes served with apple sauce. The place is especially festive during Oktoberfest every September." - Viktoria Muench

From the moment we stepped into Max Bratwurst und Bier Astoria, we knew we were in for a treat. The atmosphere was just perfect – a wonderful blend of cozy and lively, making it a great spot for a relaxed evening. Our server was incredibly friendly and attentive, offering helpful recommendations and ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our meal. We decided to try a few different items and were absolutely blown away. The mixed platter was a fantastic way to sample a variety of their offerings, and each component was bursting with flavor. The honey baked Brie was an absolute standout – creamy, sweet, and utterly divine. The soft pretzel was perfectly baked, with a lovely chewy texture and just the right amount of salt, and the accompanying mustard was excellent. Even the simple cucumber salad was fresh and refreshing, providing a nice counterpoint to the richer dishes. Honestly, every single dish we ordered exceeded our expectations. The quality of the ingredients was evident, and the care taken in the preparation shone through. It's clear that Max Bratwurst und Bier Astoria pays attention to the details, both in their food and their service. We left feeling completely satisfied and are already looking forward to our next visit. If you're looking for delicious food, great service, and a wonderful atmosphere, look no further than Max Bratwurst und Bier Astoria! Highly, highly recommended.

This place has become one of our favorites near our home. Whenever we want to enjoy good sausages, great burgers, desserts, or beer, this is where we like to go. The chicken sausages are amazing, and the bread is perfect for easy eating. I love to add onions and sweet peppers. This time, I had red cabbage, some fries, a beer, and their incredible Apfelstrudel for dessert. If you're looking for a place to relax and feel safe, even when others are enjoying their beers, you should definitely come here. It's a family-friendly environment, and we always go with our child or take our family members who are visiting us. Even though it is not easy to find a parking spot, it is worth the effort to find a place. Cheers!

Something very special where you feel the German taste. First time here and very happy to enjoy every bite. A perfect place to taste brats and real beer . Thanks to everyone who works in this amazing place. Love it and will be our favorite German place.

Google
They got tons of brats! The sauerkraut has bits of speck, the potato options cover all varieties from mashed to fried to salad! And the schnitzel comes as a regular entree or a BLT sandwich! What? All I know is I liked what I had and there is lots more to try! Not to mention they have ample outdoors seating! Can’t go wrong with bratwurst and beer on a hot sunny day!

A Hidden Gem in Astoria – Max Bratwurst und Bier We had a great experience dining at Max Bratwurst und Bier. The servers were incredibly accommodating and even offered beer samples to help us choose the perfect pint—which was such a thoughtful touch and made us feel welcome right away. The menu had a variety of bratwurst flavors, and we tried the beef, jalapeño and cheddar, beer and cheese, and veal. Each one was delicious, but the beer and cheese brat stood out as a clear favorite—flavorful, juicy, and paired perfectly with our drinks. On the server's recommendation, we also ordered the mac and cheese (with bacon added), and it absolutely hit the spot. Creamy, rich, and indulgent—just the way comfort food should be. There's plenty of outdoor seating, which is a big plus, especially for casual hangouts or group get-togethers. We'll definitely be back to explore more of their menu. Another wonderful spot in Astoria worth visiting!

I recently dined at Max, and it was an incredible experience! I had the Austrian burger, mashed potatoes, and potato soup, and I absolutely loved every bite. The flavors were fantastic, and everything tasted fresh and homemade. The staff were attentive and friendly. The European vibe and atmosphere really set the mood for a delightful evening. Highly recommend!

Authentic vibe and people, great spot to take the family or catch up with friends. Florian and Lilia are awesome, started us with a round of favorite brews - Radeberger pils and Hofbrau lager and also introduced us to a delicious Apple Strudel for dessert. Perfect with Hofbrau dunkel. They also have 1 and 2-liter boots for the extra thirsty! The Max Platter is amazing, choice of 4 brats and came loaded with extra goodies and topped with eggs!! Perfect as a huge breakfast platter for 4. Very lucky find, will be back for more!

Had a great time here, from the bratwursts + beer to the lively, wholesome atmosphere created by a blend of families with grandparents and babies dining in and young friends unwinding at the end of the week.

Yelp
Great place! Have been coming here for some time but last meal inspired me to write this review. The place has a cute atmosphere and staff is always nice. Service, excellent, but the food. THE FOOD! Delicious! The Giant Oktoberfest style pretzel is soft, salty, doughy paired with their sweet mustard. An amazing starter! The cucumber salad leaves me wanting for more. Sweet, crisp, refreshing. So good. I love the flavor that comes of this simple salad is really delightful. The fact that the cucumbers, sliced thinly, manage to keep their crunch just only adds to how great this side dish is. Potato Pancakes seasoned perfectly with sour cream and applesauce packs a nice hearty bite. Kasespatzle, which is a take on a Spatzle "Mac" & Cheese topped with crunchy breadcrumbs is a homey comforting style side. Krautsalat, which is an acidic crunchy take on a coleslaw is a cool, refreshing side that cuts the heaviness of any other main entree. Rotkohl, red cabbage, is pretty good, though not my favorite. If I were a betting woman, I'd put my money on Zum Stammtisch' red cabbage. It's cooked down a bit more and sweeter. Max's is good but I'm missing that aspect of it. Their schnitzels and wursts and all the meaty goodness has never missed the mark here. A nice squeeze of lemon on their breaded Chicken schnitzel hits the spot every time. Definitely recommend. HIGHLY recommend. If I can ask for something to be added to the menu, I'd love a sauerbraten. That is my absolute fave German dish and I'm a bit disappointed it isn't offered here. That's my only downside. Still a fabulous place that you should definitely check out while in the area.

Yelp
The portions are still huge. My friend got the pork schnitzel with the creamy mushroom sauce, which was tasty but made the schnitzel soggy. I got the pork shank which came steaming but not as hot as it looked. It looks huge and still a good portion but most is bone. The spatzle was not bad and had more flavor than I expected. The homemade apple strudel wasn't bad either especially the apple pieces but the pastry itself was a little too thin and had an off putting texture to it.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night with my family a while back, but realized I hadn't left a review for this place! Overall, a super experience. Family-friendly restaurant with delicious food that everyone will enjoy. The place does get packed so we had to wait a little to get a table, but we didn't mind. Totally worth the wait! The staff were so nice and accommodating. Authentic German food with cozy vibes. To start off, we ordered the Laugenbrezel (pretzel) and the Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes). We also got ourselves a beer. The pretzel was so warm and soft. I loved the cheese dip that came on the side. Potato pancakes were nice and crispy and came with tasty applesauce. I think the applesauce was also homemade. The beer portions are huge! Gotta say, I really enjoy the taste of German beer. Can easily be split with someone. For entrees, we ordered the pork schnitzel and chose to add the creamy mushroom sauce. The pork was nice and tender and cooked perfectly. Breading was crispy. The mushroom sauce also gave it a nice flavor. It came with a hearty amount of cabbage. Overall the food is very filling! Unfortunately we had no room for dessert haha! But we will definitely come back to try that. I'm curious for their apple strudel, which everyone raves about. Reasonably priced and I highly recommend :)

Yelp
I'm not the biggest German food connoisseur but this place is pretty darn good. Located in a residential area of Astoria, it's more of a neighborhood spot than destination but that's part of it's charm. The beer selection here is pretty decent and the food fits it perfectly. The wife and I got the platter that had a bit of everything - sausages, schnitzel, potatoes and cabbage. Everything was tasty and the portion was massive. It was really meant for 3-4 people so we ended up taking most of it home. Prices are reasonable and the vibe is relaxed and friendly. It's a bit of a smaller establishment so when it gets busy, you're going to have to wait a bit. They do have outdoor seating so that helps. Definitely a nice biergarten to go and grab a bite and chill.

Yelp
I'm so glad I decided to try Max's Bratwurst und Bier after reading all the great Yelp reviews! When we arrived, the place was busy, and the indoor seating seemed a bit tight. But upon closer inspection, we noticed a covered, heated outdoor area in front and to the side of the restaurant. Despite it being a chilly November day in New York, we had a warm, cozy, and bright experience dining in the outer area of restaurant. With a German restaurant, beer is a given, but since I'm not a beer drinker, I opted for a Riesling. It was crisp, slightly sweet, and the perfect choice - I ended up having two during lunch. We started with a Bavarian-style pretzel, which came with a scoop of Obatzda (a creamy cheese spread), sliced red onions, and mustard. A bite of pretzel, red onion, Obatzda, and mustard made for the perfect combination. All entrees come with two sides, with a mix of typical and some not-so-typical German sides. My friend and I both chose the roasted potatoes with bacon, while she went with sauerkraut and I picked the creamy dill cucumber salad. The cucumbers were sliced extremely thin yet managed to remain crunchy . The dill sauce had a sweetness note that I thoroughly enjoyed. The roasted potatoes with bacon were roasted perfectly. For the main course, I chose pork schnitzel (two crispy fried pork cutlets topped with mushroom gravy) and a "wurst" platter with many sausage options for my friend. She asked the waiter, who's been with the restaurant for 10 years, to choose her sausages, and she loved them! I didn't have any of her lunch, but I did get all the leftovers, so I was able to enjoy the sausages the next day - they were delicious, snappy, and full of flavor. For dessert - I know, right? We were stuffed, but we couldn't resist. I went for something light and chose the Heisse Liebe - vanilla ice cream with hot raspberry sauce. It was refreshing and the perfect way to wrap up the meal. My friend, who lived in Germany for a year, called the apple strudel the best she's ever had - and I'm taking her word for it! The service was excellent, with friendly and attentive wait staff. As we left, we noticed additional beer barrel tables on the sidewalk with high wooden chairs, as well as a significant amount of picnic tables behind the outdoor enclosure - probably used during warmer weather. Parking is tricky, but if you have patience, you can find a spot. We got lucky and found one just a block away. Overall, a great experience, and I highly recommend it!

Yelp
After choosing Dillinger's across the street over Max Bratwurst one time to many (those wings, IYKYK), I finally made it a point to enjoy the outdoor seating here on one of the first nice days this spring and am so, so happy that I did. We started off strong with a free check-in beer (thanks, Yelp!) a light and refreshing Gaffel Kolsch blonde ale. My go-to is usually a Radeberger or Hofbrau for German beers, but I liked this so much I stuck with it and ordered a larger version. The prices here are more than reasonable. I was shocked that we ate like kings and only owed $20 each plus tip at the end of our meal after having two beers each, a huge order of fries, a pretzel with cheese and an order of potato pancakes, which were perfectly crispy and so delicious. Service was prompt and friendly, even though we were seated kind of deep along the outside of the restaurant our server made sure we were well taken care of. As far as ambiance goes, this has to be one of the best outdoor seating options in the area. The string lights really make it feel magical at light, and we were well positioned to see the bright pink sky since we came around sunset. Would definitely recommend this spot for a date night, super romantic and fun!

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday and they were out of a lot of the options I wanted nonetheless service was fast and friendly. Just missed the oktoberfest events which was a bummer but just means I'll be back next year!

Yelp
The food is still tasty! The service was friendly and knowledgeable and the ambiance was casual and laid back. It's a really nice place to enjoy lunch/dinner with your friends and family. The food was fresh and hot. There was a good portion to keep you full for the next two days.

Yelp
Came back here for the first time in years, and the food is still as amazing as I remembered, if not better! Came here for brunch and the place wasn't busy however the service was lacking. We sat outdoor, and we felt unattended. Told one server to get us a to-go box, the server immediately forgot, and we had to flad another server to help us. Other than that, the food made up for the lack of service. Will still go back for the bratwursts and the German mac n cheese spaetzle!

Yelp
Visited on weekday evening. The space is pretty casual and trendy. Loved all the interior. Very well designed. They have both outdoor and indoor seating. At the time, they had windows and doors opened. There are plenty of street parking spaces and electric car charger stations. There aren't too many covered garage around this place. Public transit is a bit difficult but accessible. Foods were great! Pork jock was well cooked. Very tender and flavorful. It has a steep price, but for authentic German in the state, I think the price is reasonable for the quality. Similar to what I had over trip (sorry for natives) Good beer selections. I tried multiple. The servers are very good at checking on you. They won't really push. Overall, very pleasant visit. Pretty divey restaurant.

Yelp
Love this place. The prices are lower than bohemian hall And the quality is better. The pork schnitzel and german potatoes and spaetzel are amazing.

Yelp
I came in last night craving their German mac & cheese. I did arrive 15mins before the kitchen would have closed( I am the type of person that when I realize things of that nature I tend to want to bow out, I hate being that person) the host was very accommodating and told me multiple times it's fine, I just couldn't meander the menu to long. The food was great, like it always has been. It was a Wednesday night so the vibe was quiet and easy. The chicken cutlet was the size of my face and hot! No complaints 10/10

Yelp
During my 4th or 5th visit to Max I had the most upsetting experience. Specifically, from the moment we walked in there were whispers stating, "Get them some margaritas and we were not greeted at the door as the other patrons. This comment was especially rude because this establishment solely sells beer. Meanwhile, it was a completely empty restaurant with the exception of one table that was seated. When we were finally greeted by a waitress, she sat us at our table and I asked what kind of cooking oil they use due to a severe allergy of various oils. Since the kitchen and seating area have an open concept one of the staff from the kitchen sarcastically yells out, "We cook with truffle oil." Ew. The man made sure it was clearly obvious we heard him because he said it 3 times apparently. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of the first times, but when he said it the last time, he was very loud and disruptive about it. My friend who was with me has the allergy and felt so uncomfortable to the point she didn't feel safe eating at this establishment. I agreed it was a rather hostile environment and she proceeded to tell me everything she heard after we had left. In such a culturally diverse neighborhood I was shocked at this kind of experience and extremely upset because I have been to this restaurant several times before. This behavior was clearly racially motivated and even felt celebrated, as two Latina woman walk into a restaurant for lunch and are faced with this kind of discrimination. Food is mediocre at best.

Yelp
In a quiet neighborhood in Astoria, sits a surprisingly great German Restaurant! I have to say, the staff at Max Bratwurst Und Bier are among the friendliest I've ever encountered. Our group of 10 went to celebrate Oktoberfest, and we were ALL allowed the Yelp Check-in perk of a Free .2 Lt Beer (Gaffel Koelsch), which was pretty good! Service & hospitality were wonderful. Knowing this would be a heavy meal, we came hungry, and left super stuffed, with lots of leftovers. The portion sizes were enormous! Great for sharing. Below is our shared menu (shared by 5 ppl): -- Oktoberfest-Style Giant Pretzel w. cheese spread ($12): the pretzel was indeed giant; served with slices of raw onion and 2 different kinds of mustard. The cheese spread was fantastic and went well with the pretzel. (If you don't like cheese, you can also order just the pretzel, without the cheese spread for $9). This giant pretzel was served warm and was delicious. -- Potato Pancakes (3 large pcs/$9): these potato pancakes came with a side of apple sauce and sour cream. They were large and a feast for the eyes; however, we found them quite disappointing. They were nicely crispy but lacked seasoning; you couldn't really taste the potatoes. Surprisingly disappointing. -- Chicken Schnitzel ($19): came with your choice for 2 sides. We chose a double order of "German Mac n Cheese", aka Spaetzel, which was fantastic! The chicken schnitzel was nicely crispy but again, a little bland. Next time, we'd order this with the creamy mushroom sauce for an extra $3. I think the sauce would have made a world of difference. -- Max Combo Platter ($66): This was the highlight of our meal! This platter can easily feed 5-6 ppl, depending on whether or not you also order appetizers. 5 of us shared this platter and had plenty of leftovers to take home. This platter had a sampling of 9 different sausages/brats and your choice of either pork or chicken schnitzel; all served on top of a platter full of home fries, sauerkraut and red cabbage. There were even 2 fried eggs on top of one of the sausages. (See my photos of the platter). Fantastic platter and a must have if dining with a group. All the sausages & brats were distinctive and delicious! Needless to say, we had no room for dessert! Haha Big thanks to Max Bratwurst und Bier for a great experience. We shall be back!

Yelp
Great little German restaurant in good ole' Astoria Queens! The food was really tasty and cooked to order. I tried the potato pancakes and Wurstplattte , a choice of two brats & two sides ( I selected the freshly made red cabbage and creamy cucumber salad). My co-diners had a hamburger and Schnitzel. They both enjoyed immensely ! The beers on tap are such a great variety. The Oktoberfest Märzen was the perfect compliment to my brats. There is outdoor seating as well, but we chose inside. The staff was friendly and even when it was really busy , they were very attentive. I can't wait to head back to try the Nurnberger brats : small pork sausages served over mashed potatoes & sauerkraut - I am sure I won't be disappointed! Prost!

Yelp
This place is amazing my family and I frequent it at least ounce a week. Beer is always cold. Food is always good. And service is on point. Highly recommend this place

Yelp
This is a terrific little German restaurant. It isn't fancy but the food is very good. We love the veal schnitzel and the macaroni and cheese. You could also have chicken schnitzel if you prefer. It's perfection. They have an excellent selection of beers. The service is terrific. If you sit outside, they will even bring you a bowl for your pup if you bring her. So thoughtful.

Yelp
This is a good German restaurant with some authentic dishes! The staff is a bit hit or miss, but when they're on, it's a good time to it's a bit small, so it's not great for large parties, but they can accommodate most groups. There is a great beer selection and plenty of home-cooked German favorites. Come on a nice day and sit outside and take it all in!

Yelp
Excellent beer, food and service. A must visit when you're in the neighborhood. I used to live in Astoria and have never gone. I was in the city and finally paid a visit.

Yelp
Can't go wrong at Max's with Delicious beer and food, and excellent service! We started with the Brotzeitteller which was so yummy - definitely don't skip this one on your order! I had the Wurstplatte with sides of Kasespatzle and the GurkenSalat. I was very pleased with mg dish the sides complimented the sausages perfectly. My boyfriend had the Schnitzel (pork) topped with the creamy mushroom sauce (see pics), and sides of fries and sauerkraut. The schnitzel alone was delish and cooked to perfection. We made the error of adding the mushroom sauce topping - unfortunately, it was excessively salty and we had to remove it from the schnitzel. Otherwise we had a wonderful and filling dining experience and can't wait to return! Good eats and cheers!

Yelp
Let me start by saying the food was absolutely outstanding. I was reading the website and saw the Mac and cheese was their best, so I luckily put in an order before the food came. One of the best Mac and cheeses I've had with a super interesting pasta shape. The curry wurst was amazing so flavorful and perfectly balanced. The restaurant felt like a beer house straight out of Germany. My friend even noticed the trademarked chairs of a beer house they went to in Germany! The whole vibe was spot on and perfect. TLDR ORDER THE MAC AND CHEESE

Sally H.

Yelp
Love the vibes and decor of this restaurant. Super reasonable pricing! Definitely stop by at this neighborhood gem.

Yelp
I was at this German restaurant with one of the Meetup groups I am in back in November. We had a mix of dishes and the food overall was solid. I'm partially German and the food here definitely was better than at Heidelberg and some other spots I've been to. The staff was friendly. They have a Yelp check-in for Gaffel Kolsch which is a classic of the type though I went with the Köstritzer Schwarzbier, one of my favorites of that variety. We first got the Laugenbretzel (or soft pretzel for $9) and she got the obatzda (or cheese spread) for an extra $3. She went with the large variety as a bunch of us were sharing. The cheese spread is similar to a strong cream cheese and it went well with the pretzel though I'm not sure if it was worth it for the extra three bucks. There was also some condiments including spicy mustard, sweet mustard (aka the Bavarian type which is my preference,) and curry ketchup. The latter was just alright lacking a lot of the curry powder flavor and I actually prefer the packaged version from Hela (especially their scharf/sharp version so perhaps this was the milk/delikat one.) Judging by this alone, I wouldn't order the currywurst here. Soon arriving was the other appetizer, the Kartoffelpuffer or potato pancakes served with apple sauce and sour cream. They were reasonably priced at $9 for 3 though the sauces were definitely necessary as they were a bit bland. From the main dishes, the Schnitzel or fried cutlet (for $19 including two sides.) Our host went with two orders of their Käsespätzle listed as German mac and cheese and the Hähnchenschnitzel or chicken cutlet (they also have pork and the more traditional veal / wiener schnitzel for three bucks more.) The schnitzel was tender though slightly bland compared to some other spots while the Käsespätzle (or baked spätzle with cheese and onions) was excellent. You can also top the schnitzel with sauces for a couple bucks more as well (mushroom or gypsy sauce (aka Zigeuner or paprika and tomato.) Our main dish was the Max Combo Platter for $66. This massive platter which they list for four people consisted of 1 schnitzel, 1 leberkase, 4 Nurnbergers, and our choice of 4 bratwursts also served with bratkartoffeln (fries), rotkohl (red cabbage,) and sauerkraut. As we went with the chicken last time, we went with the pork version/Schweine this time which was a lot more tender and a lot more flavorful (would recommend heavily over the chicken.) The Leberkäse is listed as a meatloaf on the menu (as with a lot of other spots) but that's a bit of a misnomer. I would describe it more as a thick delicious slice of bologna topped with an egg and I would almost change it on the menu and it was a very good version here. In term of the wurst, the Nürnbergerwürst is more of a breakfast sausage and it's alright here. Otherwise we had the Andouille Bratwurst (spicy smoked pork,) Rinderwürst (smoked beef,) Geflügelwurst (chicken,) and Bockwurst (boiled knackwurst.) Of the four, our favorite was the rinderwurst. It reminded me heavily of landjäger/hunter's sausage though a lot more tender with a very strong smokey flavor. Also solid was the bockwurst. The geflugelwurst was alright and our least favorite was the andouille bratwurst. Kudos to them having something related to andouille sausage but it lacked the spices distinctive to said sausage so I would just remove the description from the menu (as it worked simply as a bratwurst.) The sides were alright but I'm used to better in NJ (at the German/Swiss Pork Store.) Overall it was a massive plate of food and the only place I can think of with this much meat for the money are some Polish spots in Greenpoint. The Max Combo Platter here is outstanding and the rest of the menu was solid to good. Good German spot though there are definitely dishes and sausages which are weaker. Low 4.

Yelp
I came here with some friends because I was in town and was dying for some German food. My friends told me this was the spot to eat at. We got seated right away. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered some drinks, they had some beer and I had a mimosa. We also had the pretzel with mustard and cheese. Was so so good. You can get the mini one for half the price of the big one. I had to ordered the pork schnitzel, with red cabbage and cucumber salad. Holy hell it was amazing! I love every bite. Beautiful colors and crispy meat. It was a wonderful place to try and will be back again!

Yelp
Delicious and authentic German food. You won't go wrong with the pretzel and potato pancakes. Hearty portions of pork schnitzel with tangy red cabbage and sauerkraut. Will be back to try their apple strudel..

Yelp
Great spot for some beers and German grub. Lots of outdoor seating plus indoor seating with a fully open storefront. Absolutely perfect hang out for a nice day. I had a couple oktoberfests and decided to try their chiliwurst with peppers and onions. Reminded me a bit of an Italian style sausage sandwich. Bread for the sandwich was superb and it came with some mustard which greatly enhanced the sandwich.

Yelp
Love the food. Das Boot is the way to go for beer. Quick and knowledgeable staff. Enjoy both their indoor and outdoor setup too. One of my favorite Astoria spots.

Yelp
A great German restaurant located in Woodside/Astoria. The brats were delicious with a nice snap and juicy with ready bite. potato pancakes were nice and crispy and creamy on the inside. The schnitzel with will seasoned, fried perfectly and meat was still moist. Excellent neighborhood spot that also has a fanatic beer list.
google avatar

Lien L.

Yelp
I'm a fan of this place. Pretty affordable local spot that I bring friends when they come over and I'm too lazy to cook. All of the wurst are tasty and are different depending on what they are. Some had crispy snap to it. Some were more "rustic" and lean. It was a good variety to try the sampler platter. We were all pretty happy with the food. Def can see why it's a favorite.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem. I cannot believe I have lived in Astoria for more than 7 years and had not been there until this summer. If you like beer, German sausages, or Mac and cheese, you should definitely come here. And if you don't like any of those things, I'm not sure we can be friends. Their food is delicious, drinks on tap are enormous pours, and the space is well lit and clean with a chill vibe. Please go eat there! Support local businesses and keep the good restaurants and bars open!

Yelp
The appropriately named Max's best feature is its variety of sausage offerings. Mix and match options abound, and you can enjoy some German cuisine at probably the best price to quality balance point in the city.

Yelp
My chicken Scnitzel was over cooked and inedible.Same grumpy chef/owner,and a very inexperienced waiter.who did'nt give us napkins, condiments, utencils, salt, pepper,or water unless we requested it.The place was empty, and they keep the A/C on very low.We were starting to sweat. No one ate outside-0the hottest day.

Yelp
Max Bratwurst und Bier is located on a quieter corner of 30th Avenue, toward the extreme eastern end of Astoria. Perfect for those nights in the summer of 2020 when the stretch between 31st St. and Steinway is getting a liiiiittle too crazy for comfort. It was easy enough to get a seat outside, but we certainly weren't alone; there were plenty of other couples and small groups. Despite my German roots, I'm typically not the hugest fan of the cuisine, which I often find heavy and a tad underwhelming. This is precisely why I'm giving Max's 5 stars: I can't really imagine a better rendering of traditional German fare. The menu had a number of worthy categories, but I decided to go for a bratwurst: namely, the Scharfe Bauernbratwurst (coarse pork and farmer's hot bratwurst). It was excellent. Even with a topping of jalapeños, it was just a mildly, pleasantly spicy brat. And it was presented on a pretzel roll, which further enchanted the whole experience, as pretzel rolls tend to do. Max's seems to take pride in its mustards: You are presented with three different sauces on a separate tray, well before any of the food comes out. It almost feels ceremonial. My favorite was a dark, sharp mustard that tasted as if it had been mixed with Worcestershire sauce. We randomly also split a bowl of tomato soup as an appetizer, which turned out to be a pretty great choice. The soup, which featured chunks of real tomatoes, was extra creamy and tasted as if it was blended with a sour cream or a light cheese. It also came with a slice of delicious buttery toasted bread that was somehow dense and fluffy at once. Drinks included a selection of mostly (or perhaps all) German beers, on draft and in bottle. I had a Hofbrau original, one of my favorites. You can also get a boot here if you so choose!

Yelp
Came here to avoid the insanity of the Covid Astoria "scene" since this is off the beaten path a bit. COVID Precautious: Being on the corner they have a good setup with table on the street side and the avenue side, although they are pushing their luck with the proximity of the tables. The staff all wore masks (sometimes slipping below their noses) but they seemed to be making sanitizing/cleaning a priority. We watched as they cleaned the menus, wiped down tables and the seats, and had hand sanitizer in pumps readily available near the kitchen and restrooms. The bathrooms could have been cleaner there was some trash on the floor. Towards the later part of the evening there was an overcrowded table next to us who were too close and kept bumping in to us, not good. Our next visit will be earlier in the day to avoid the business of their nighttime crowds The Food: The food at Max has consistently been very good. Brats and beer you can't go wrong. The portions of the topping for the brats were on the smaller side but the entire plate itself was the appropriate size and portion. The Staff: Friendlier than most German restaurants. They were welcoming and we were seating and attended to quickly.

Yelp
Stopped by to try some new beers and after trying 5 different beers I honestly didn't leave having a favorite one (maybe german beers aren't for me). The mac & cheese was good and so was the service. It seems like a popular spot since it was busy on a Wednesday night, nice ambiance.

Yelp
Was craving some German food so I took the train up here to Astoria and I'm very glad I did, the food was delicious. I got the Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage and it tasted super fresh. The fries were run of the mill and not super special so I kick myself for ordering those over the mac and cheese that looked very good.

Yelp
Stopped by here on an early Saturday evening to try some German food. Was able to immediately take a seat and given menus for both the beer and food options. A good variety in the sausages here as well as some combo platters. Kept it simple and ordered the "Rinderbratwurst" ($10) as well as the half-liter of the Eiche Doppelbock ($8). Beer comes out first; solid value in the large format bottle and great flavor. Sausage comes out shortly after - a smoked brat inside a sliced bread topped with 'kraut and onions. Overall disappointed in the food, sausage is too dry and the bread seemed stale. Toppings added some flavor, yet it is mostly saved by the beer. Considering the ratings and other options, would want to come back to try something else.

Yelp
All the sausages, sauerkraut, pickled veggies, and drinks are so good. The dishes are huge too.

Yelp
This is one of the best German restaurants in NYC. The food is as good if not better as any traditional dish you would get in Berlin and is inexpensive. I recommend the Schnitzel, Pretzel with Cheese Dip and any Brat in the menu. They also have the traditional Pork Knuckle that you won't find on many German restaurants menu in NYC. Finish off with the Strudel. Delicious.

Yelp
The vegetarian sandwich was better than I anticipated since the pickles, peppers and eggplant worked really well, with the spread on the bed for a flavorful bite at every juncture.

Yelp
I ordered a bratwurst platter to go last night. I asked for the traditional KLASSISCHE BRATWURST (classic pork) with two sides. I got home and the "bratwurst" resembled something between a kielbasa and a hot dog. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either and also not anything close to a traditional bratwurst that I have had at plenty of other restaurants in the city. (Manor Oktoberfest, Zum Stammtisch, Rolfs etc.) The sides that I had were fantastic. I just wish that the advertised "classic Bratwurst" was something that resembled an actual Bratwurst.
