In-Person Iftar: Where Montreal’s Muslim Community Goes to Break Fast During Ramadan | Eater Montreal

"“For the last two years, we couldn’t do anything in person,” says Nail Salem, owner of the Yemeni restaurant Mazbi in the Plateau. This year, Salem is looking forward to feeding hungry guests with a classic barley shorba (soup), tender-cooked lamb or chicken mandi, edam bamia okra stew, and fowl (fava beans with onion, tomato and olive oil). Mazbi’s khobz breads, served with the main dishes, are worth the visit, as is the chai adani, the classic Yemeni tea made with red tea leaves, milk, cloves, ginger and cardamom." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Montreal Restaurants Prepare Menus For a Second Takeout-Only Ramadan | Eater Montreal

"On St-Denis in the Plateau I visit Nail Salem’s Mazbi Restaurant, where the Yemeni tradition of kahwah—an aromatic hot drink with cardamom, cinnamon, saffron, ginger and cloves—echoes in the kitchen: lamb and chicken are cooked on the mazbi flat stone grill for a tender, smoky flavour, and Salem is preparing slow-cooked mandi dishes (traditionally cooked underground and here approximated indoors) to offer a quick iftar of shorba, sambosas and a choice of four dishes—mandi lamb or chicken plus two vegetarian options—before reopening the rest of the menu after the fast-break rush." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Montreal Now Has a Yemeni Restaurant in Mazbi — and Other Openings to Know | Eater Montreal

"On St-Denis Street, I noticed Mazbi has opened recently, bringing explicit Yemeni representation to Montreal. Mandi—the slow-cooked spiced meat dish—is a staple, served alongside options like grilled fish and the stewy Saudi dish mugalgal, and there are even a few vegan choices. Although mandi has occasionally been available at now-closed spots such as Kabsah and Khayrat, Mazbi appears to be the only place currently committed to the cuisine." - Tim Forster

Loved this place! It was my first time trying Yemeni food, and everything was super tasty and authentic. The Yemeni coffee was amazing too! The atmosphere is really warm and cozy ❤️ perfect for a dinner with someone special or a nice family meal. Definitely a spot I’ll come back to!

Mazbi Restaurant serves some of the best mandi and grilled dishes I’ve ever had. The rice was perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and the meat was tender, juicy, and delicious. We tried the lamb mandi, chicken mandi, and grilled chicken — all were excellent and full of authentic Arabic taste. The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and the food came out fresh and hot. The portions were generous and worth the price. Special thanks to Abdullah for his kind and professional service — he was very friendly and made sure everything was perfect for us. Highly recommend Mazbi Restaurant to anyone who loves real Middle Eastern food! 🍗🍛🔥

Google
Had a great experience at Mazbi with my friends! We tried several dishes from the Yemeni cuisine and everything was absolutely delicious. We started with Shafoot as an appetizer, which was a refreshing and flavorful start. For the mains, we had Mandi Lamb, Mandi Chicken, and Beef Mugalgal all packed with rich spices and authentic flavors. The Mandi Lamb in particular was incredibly tender and melted in our mouths. The restaurant's decor was also really nice and added to the overall atmosphere. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting to try real Yemeni food!

We tried the delightful brunch menu available on Saturdays and Sundays. We enjoyed their delicious Shakshouka, a rich Liver dish, and the comforting Fasolia Adni that showcases the essence of Yemeni cuisine. And to top it off, we loved the warm, aromatic flavor of the Adani chai. The restaurant boasts a lovely decor and comfortable seating, an ideal spot for both intimate gatherings and larger groups.

Google
We had a fantastic Brunch here, fair price, authentic Yemenite cuisine and vibes and perfect service. Owners here are warm and nice. I enjoy the tea the most! Not so sweet, but with real flavor.

If there’s one restaurant I’d recommend, it’s Mazbi. The food is a must try, always fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff are some of the sweetest and most welcoming people you’ll meet. Every time I visit Montreal, I make sure to stop by and it never disappoints. I especially recommend the lamb Mandi, it’s incredible! Truly can’t recommend this place enough.

✨ “Mazbi Restaurant 👌, the food was so delicious... that the plate disappeared as if it never existed 😅🍽️. The atmosphere is nice, the service is excellent, and the mood became better after eating. It definitely won't be the last time I come!”

Best experience in town. The place is so friendly and has amazing options. It’s halal and the owners are super friendly. You can feel the Yemeni culture from the amazing decor. Great food taste especially the mazbi chicken. Thanks.

Yelp
Our first time trying Yemeni food. We were visiting Montreal and saw this restaurant and thought we'd give it a try. So glad we did as the food was so delicious - that we went back two more times. The food comes out bubbling hot so be careful. Large portions. Attentive and friendly service. Save room for dessert - I still dream of the kunafa.

Yelp
Yemeni restaurant with a good sized menu featuring the best of their cuisine. The bean stew transported me back to childhood as it reminded me of a Romanian dish and it was served sizzling hot. The rice was just top notch and I topped it with fried almond slices for an extra crunch. Flatbread was vegan too and I really felt satisfied, which I can't say too much about most western restaurants as a vegan and that's really a shame (just evolve already and make good vegan dishes not just salad and fries!!!) (end of rant) Go and support this business and show some love!

Yelp
Mazbi is the only Yemen restaurant in Montreal. It's located close to Artigiani. We dropped in for a late Friday lunch (around 3:30pm). Service was friendly and our waiter walked us through the entire menu. Appreciate that they bring a bottle of water for the table. The menu is one large sheet consisting of appetizers, meat dishes (lamb, beef, chicken), vegan dishes and desserts. One refill of rice and chili sauce/yoghurt are included with each entree. - Vegan sambosa ($1.85) - small but filled with a mild feta cheese. - Mazbi lamb ($21.99) - came with rice, chili sauce (more like a salsa of tomato, onion and cilantro) and yogurt (creamy, slightly cheesy). There were three pieces of lamb chops; two were cooked with a decent char, one was unfortunately dry. A bigger portion than expected. - Mogalgal beef ($17.99) - chopped beef with onions was tasty and well seasoned. The khboz was plain, reminded me of a roti. Would return to try more dishes at Mazbi.

Yelp
Been to a couple Yemen restaurants over the years but Mazbi, surprisingly, is the only Yemen spot in Montreal. We shared a mazbi lamb ($21.99) and mogalgal beef ($17.99). Three decent portions of lamb chop, although one was slightly dry. The sautéed beef was also flavourful. The small sauces they bring you (chili and yogurt) were delicious. In case you need more rice, refills are included (believe it's one per entree). Worth a try!

Yelp

Yelp
If you haven't tried it, you are missing a lot. Mazbi and Mandi are two traditional ways of cooking meat or chicken, one is boiled and the other is grilled underground to give you that additional char taste. A generous portion of basmati rice along with the spicy sauce and yogurt. I haven't dine in as the place is relatively small so take out it is.

Yelp
Okay I am in love. Their chicken is amazing and so is service. It is a beautiful small family restaurant with a great decor. The ambiance is great, perfect for dinners with a family or friends. I also recommend to try the chai, you won't regret it.

Yelp
We have ordered Mazbi chicken from here twice and both times it's been a good & decent meal. Taste 3.5/5 Quality of Ingredients 5/5 Would recommend trying this establishment if you are in the area and craving the cuisine and it's distinct spices!

Yelp
Food came lukewarm/room temp, and the onions that came on it were burnt. When I mentioned the burnt onions to the server, the owner(?) came out and apologized, and then brought a new serving of onions out. New onions still tasted burnt. Although the service was reasonable, the food was quite disappointing. I am pretty shocked at all the high reviews actually.

Yelp
Wow! I absolutely loved this restaurant. This is the only Yemeni restaurant in Montreal and they deserve all of the praise. Super friendly service, always checking in to ensure we have everything we need. We arrived late around 9 am after struggling to find parking. They had run out of the mandi dish for both chicken and lamb but we decided to get the half chicken Mazbi and beef dish (on hot stone pot)! First - the portions were insane for the price! Easy to share with someone if you're not super hungry. The flavours were on point - chicken was fall off the bone and the rice was seasoned well! The beef was delicious - it was served sautéed with onions! Next time I'm in Montreal, I'm definitely going again! Hopefully I'll be able to try their mandi. :) friendly service, delicious food - what more can you ask for?

Yelp
Authentic Yemeni Cuisine and the only one of it's kind in Montreal. Currently open for takeout only and have taken great measures for Covid inside (menu by the door and you can order when ready) The guy serving us was super friendly and accommodating; we had some special requests and he was able to make the adjustments. Their famous dishes are the Mandi/Mazbi - hopefully once we are able to eat in, would love to try that inside as they take pride in their presentation. They have a great selection of Vegan dishes which we ordered (Edam Bamia / Veg Edam) and also their cute bite-sized samosas. Everything was packaged very well, good portion size, decent prices and most importantly, super delicious! A must to try if looking for a unique cuisine, both for Vegans/Vegetarians & Non-Veg eaters!

Yelp
Easily one of my most enjoyable restaurant experiences in a while. Stumbled in here for dinner on a recent Friday night with some friends and we were all thrilled. The mazbi chicken had a nice flavour and was roasted well, and the mandi chicken was extraordinarily flavourful. They were served on a large bed of flavoured, aromatic rice and with two sauces (one yogurt-based, the other likely tomato-based) on the side. The portions were enormous. Also tried the kunafa for dessert which was a pleasant surprise. It was cheese and pastry-based, but with subtle flavours and complementing textures. The meal was very affordable, the staff were exceptionally friendly and the ambiance was nice as well. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Yelp
This is the best Yemeni food I had in North America. I came in from the States to Montreal for a couple of days to visit family. I had tried several places in the past for Yemeni food, but nothing comes close. It is seasoned to perfection, with all the condiments served on the side without you even asking. The hosts are very friendly and attentive. The portions are large, leaving no room for dessert; so pace yourself. Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Delicious food, great service, with cozy atmosphere in a beautiful neighborhood. We loved it.

Yelp
We come to Montreal several times every year and this was honestly one of the best restaurants we have been to. The fact that this restaurant has only been open a little over 2 months makes it even more impressive, they really had their act together-- the food and service were outstanding. The restaurant is immaculately clean and cute inside. The service was incredible. We came in about 40 minutes before they close, which I fully expected them to tell us that there was a limited menu because of the time and that there were certain things we couldn't order-- they had every right to do so or even turn us away like most places do if it is within an hour/half hour of close. Not the case here, they even offered some things that they told us take longer to cook and have a longer wait. They were so friendly and welcoming, it felt like we were out somewhere with friends. The family that owns the restaurant was working and we had such a nice long conversation with them and you could tell they were genuinely happy to show us their food and culture and to tell us about everything. We had so much fun talking to them and their service was incredible, we cannot wait to come back in August! I really hope this place takes off and has years of great business, because it is our new favorite. We had the Magalgal Beef and Chicken Mazbi dinners, plus sambosa as an appetizer and the Fata Bilmoze for dessert. I cannot say enough about the food, it was absolutely delicious. The family who owns the restaurant was happy to make recommendations for us and even brought us extra things for us to try because we were so interested in their food and culture they were so happy to have us try things. Everything was delicious. Added bonus (and I hate being that person): If you don't speak French and struggle at times with menus, the staff speaks native-level fluent English, you forget you're in a non-English speaking city, so I imagine that will be a relief for some people who struggle with the language

Yelp
Try the mandi lamb it was delicious, it melt's right off the bone and the chicken is very juicy as well. If you are new to Yemeni cuisine ( my first time) don't forget to add the tomato sauce and yogurt sides as it adds to the blast of the flavour. Price point is very affordable and portions are very good. Also lovee the meat sambosas.

B A.

Yelp
The food is amazing and authentic. One feels eating in Adan or Jeddah. The chicken is so delicious with the charcoal taste. The lamb is very tender and tasty. After the meal, we got the special banana dessert. It is really "agreable".

Yelp
Meal was great, full of flavour and spices. Also, recommend the chai tea. Cosy restaurant run by a family from Yemen, very friendly. Enjoyed the whole experience and plan to go back.

Yelp
Delicious restaurant out of the norm. Awesome service, tried the mandi chicken which was very tender and going back to try the mandi lamb which is supposed to be better (try to get there before 9pm). The soup, sambosa beef and sambosa cheese were delicious!

Yelp
One the best Hadramout food I have eat I recommend for every how know hadrami mandi .

Yelp
The prices too high and the food is not authentic. I tried couple plates, expensive for no reason. I don't recommend this place.

Yelp
Delicious down home style Middle Eastern food that leaves you craving more. My friend and I ordered the Chicken Mazbi and the Mandi Lamb. It was all exquisite. The portion sizes were great and the service was perfect.

Johnathan M.

Yelp
The owners were working hard and they did a great job! The food was plentiful, flavorful, and well varied. I highly recommend the lamb, and the chai tea. We tried everything on the menu, and it was all great! Thank you Mazbi!
