"To those of us from small Southern towns, McKoy’s generic sports bar-ambiance feels as safe as our mothers’ wombs. Chelsea and Jimmy meet his mom, dad, and sister here, which could just as easily be a restaurant in their hometown, a little unincorporated community 90 miles northeast of Charlotte. Because Jimmy’s family members are the most authentic, likable characters in the entire season, we hope they got to experience McKoy’s best menu item: smoked and double-grilled chicken wings. This is a real-deal Charlotte spot. Food came out quick, staff was friendly, and the double charred wings were a hit. The mac and cheese was solid too. Definitely recommend!

Let me tell you something me and Charlotte had a moment today 😍 First stop on my foodie journey and babyyy it did NOT disappoint! From the warm welcome at the door to meeting one of the amazing owners, Ryan, who shared the heartwarming story of how he and his brother built this spot with love and legacy (shoutout to Grandma ❤️). Now let’s talk food: 🔥 Smoked wings that had me speechless 💥 Fried squash that was crispy perfection 🤯 Crack mac & cheese that’ll make you wanna smack your momma (respectfully lol) 🍗 The LT Platter aka a meat lover’s dream! Chicken, ribs, pulled chicken AND pork roast? Whew! My tastebuds were taken advantage of in the best way! If you’re ever in Charlotte, do yourself a favor and slide through. Thank me later 😘

Google
McKoy’s Smokehouse & Saloon in Charlotte delivered a true Southern BBQ experience with a welcoming, rustic vibe. The smoked wings—double-grilled and tossed in their signature barbalo sauce—were a standout, offering a perfect balance of smoky flavor and crispiness. The pulled pork was both hearty and flavorful. Sides like the mac & cheese complemented the mains well. The staff was friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience. For anyone seeking authentic, no-frills Carolina barbecue in a laid-back setting, McKoy’s is a must-visit.

This is our third time here, and we had a nice experience with both the food and staff BEFORE , but this TIME we felt disrespected, especially by the MANAGER (the white guy). I clearly explained that the dish wasn’t what we expected—the chicken was pinkish and smelled bad. While I was explaining, he interrupted and said,Let me show you our terms and conditions.. Why the hell would I need to see those at a restaurant? They didn’t care about why I didn’t like the food. This guy made our experience terrible, and it was one of the worst nights we've had. My wife ordered the Philly chicken, which was fine, but I ordered the half BBQ chicken, and I didn’t even get to have a piece of it. I still paid the bill for food I didn’t even eat. Seriously, this was crazy. WORST EVERHAD

Google
Haley was an excellent waitress. took my order and checked on me throughout the meal. the double grilled chicken wings were amazing. just the right amount of crisp without being over cooked. the fried squash was great. never had that before. the roast beef and ribs were very good. I personally didnt enjoy the pulled pork or chicken quarter but everybody’s bbq preference will be different.

Google
As first timers we were thoroughly impressed. The food is authentic, full of flavor and rich when smoke. The sides taste homemade. Service is great. Very friendly and attentive.

Google
Restaurant is really nice . Server was great. Ordered pulled chicken and sides. Sides were hot and tasted good. Pulled chicken came out cold so they brought me another plate of chicken said it was hot but it was cold. Everything else was great for all the other 7 people with me . So Ordered anything but pulled chicken plate. Not my first time going but first problem with food.

Google
Charlotte has lost so many classic spots and I’m so glad that McKoys still crushes. Stopped in for lunch on a layover and it was just as DELICIOUS and charming as always. Service was great too. Love that the owner stopped by to say hello during our meal. Old school, traditional food and service at its best. 100/10 reco.

Glen D.

Yelp
Service was friendly and fast. Best ribs I've ever had! If you like pot roast you better try that too.

Kristi F.

Yelp
Food is great. We got the buffalo wings and loaded fries with pulled pork. The wings were Smokey and delicious. Best I've had in a while. Husband loved the peanut butter pie. It was a little too peanut butter-y for me. I think I would have liked more whipped cream perhaps. The booths could use a little tlc. I sat down and felt like I was going to fall through. Padding in one spot is completely gone, Service was good, food and drinks came out fast. I was inhaling water and she kept my water full. Chastity took great care of us.

Yelp
This was my first time back at McKoy's since 2021. I wanted to bring my boyfriend to check it out since he'd never been and we love checking out new spots when we can. We came on a random weekday evening and it wasn't busy at all. Walking up was uncomfortable because there were A LOT of political flyers, signs and billboards. It was a little odd. It seems like there were some issues due to a massive Kamala Harris billboard being placed directly in their parking lot. So, there were also several Trump yard signs all over and they even had a sign on their door saying they don't endorse any parties etc. Just a smidge odd. To each their own, but it was a bit too much for us to just be coming somewhere for food. We decided to stick around and eat, we were starving. Food was great, service was fine.

Yelp
Just tried out McKoy's and had a good experience. I wouldn't put it in my top 3 but it wasn't bad. The pulled chicken was tasty, especially with their original sauce--perfectly balanced. They also had a vinegar-based sauce, but it was a bit too tangy for my liking. My boyfriend had the tenderloin which was packed with flavor! We opted for the rolls instead of the cornbread, and they were soft, fresh, and so good that I didn't even need butter! The mac n cheese was decent. The potato salad was ok...once again not bad but just ok. Service was on point, and the food came out super fast. Price was reasonable and worth a visit if you're in the mood for barbecue!

Tim R.

Yelp
The service was fantastic, the food a little less so. Went with a big group after baseball but our server was amazing. The food was very good, but not real hot when we got it. I ordered the chicken nachos and they were really good, albeit lukewarm. But I understand since it was busy and we had probably 25 or so in our group. Loved the idea of each chip being its own thing. Not a big mouth of chips & chicken. Each chip had chicken & cheese on it, nice touch.

John C.

Yelp
I go to this place every time I'm in Charlotte, great food, thoughtful staff and all around fantastic service.

Melody B.

Yelp
This was a convenient find near our hotel and fortunately, it was really good too! I ordered a small of the BBQ pork platter and it came with two fixin's (sides). Based on our server's suggestion, I chose mac-n-cheese and fried squash. We also ordered a basket of dinner rolls. Everything was delicious - I highly recommend ordering the fried squash too. The dinner rolls are a MUST order. The bread was soft and warm. Not only was the food great, but the service blew me away too. Amy was our server and she was kind, friendly, and quick. Highly recommend checking out this casual bbq place! Also fun fact: a scene from Love is Blind (Season 6 in Charlotte) was filmed here over a year ago.

Monique J.

Yelp
The food was Really was alot of meat in my order. The service was Blah! Told the person that it was are 1st. She didn't go another step as recommended anything? Then they have a bunch of And most was on fox news. Didn't see CNN Then Really didn't feel comfortable Like I said the food was great. Just order it for take out.

Amy K.

Yelp
Great beer on tap and you MUST get the wings. Smoked and double grilled. Good amount of parking and they have daily specials. These are some really amazing wings - I will totally go back here.

Marissa J.

Yelp
We found this place by using Yelp of course while looking for soul food. I noticed they also had barbecue, which is a great combination. I will say my favorite thing on my plate was the macaroni. If you don't order anything else, make sure you order the macaroni. The pool chicken was OK but I prefer a different type of sauce. I like the greens as well but needed a little bit more flavor. The service was pretty good until it got a little busy but other than that it was OK. It is a casual environment and great for a late night meal.

Allison T.

Yelp
Customer service 5 stars. Food 5 stars. We flew up for a quick business meeting and this smoke house is not far from the airport. It rated well so we gave it a shot. It did not disappoint the bbq was perfect. The wings were some of the best I've had. The owner came up to our table and said they do 10,000 wings a month!!! They know wings. He saw that u didn't order the Mac and cheese so he brought me a sample. Let me tell you order the Mac and cheese! The fried squash was also a delight!! Their pot roast is also very juicy which he also asked me to sample. Highly satisfied!

Mike F.

Yelp
Hidden behind a gas station, I saw the smoke from the smoker one day and went to see where that great smell was coming from and found McKoys. Food never disappoints here. The bar is full of TVs and great servers. Just good drinks and food. And lots of convo at the bar.

Glenn C.

Yelp
Bbq pork was ok. It had a weird aftertaste. I think it was partially the vinegary bbq sauce. You had a choice of 2 unlabeled sauces. Fries and fried okra were very good. Service was adequate. Took a long time for tea refills and our check. Decent ambiance but nothing special. Companion had chicken that he said was good. It looked like a small portion and was burnt but that could be the smoked part.

Alexandra E.

Yelp
Found this place randomly via Google, we're greeted and set immediately, and told all about the history and recommendations from the owner himself, a little lengthy introduction, but a nice personal touch. Our waitress was nice, attentive and food came out quickly. I tried the vegetable plate , fried squash, green beans, potato salad and Mac and cheese, two of those were "highly recommended/favorites" , extensive menu for a smaller place. and in my opinion the Mac and cheese wasn't salted or flavored enough while the fried squash was so salty I couldn't eat it. The potato salad was ok, tasted like grocery store bought but the green beans were delicious. By far my favorite thing I tried as well as the corn bread. The rolls were also ok, nice and soft, but nothing memorable. My boyfriend had the pulled pork sandwich and Mac and cheese. Neither of which were memorable for him either, though the portions are nice. If they had more options for bbq I think it would have been a nice touch as well. Overall decent food but after the owner explained about food network being there and boasted about certain menu items I felt a little disappointed.

John J.

Yelp
Food was awesome, hot and fresh, good value. Service was also awesome Quick and polite, the ambiance was out of a sports bar, very sociable. I recommend this restaurant highly. Finally you get what you pay for,

Chris D.

Yelp
Tried a new bbq spot today! The food was just ok! The best thing was definitely the Gummy Bear shot and the Mac and cheese. The service was really just ok too. I've had way better bbq in Charlotte. The meat was kind of dry, the burger looked like a frozen patty out of a grocery store box. It was kind of disappointing that they didn't have a selection of bbq flavors to try. We asked for some more sauce other than the ones that were offered for free at the table. The Barbalo sauce wasn't good but the Honey Habanero was decent. Neither of them were worth the $1 up-charge

Rohini G.

Yelp
Im confused by the ratings. Let's start with the good. Service was quick and the restaurant accommodated a very large group on short notice on the patio with no issues. Portions were also generous. I think the good ends there... I tried the BBQ pork platter and the portion was very generous, but there was absolutely no seasoning on this. I got mac-n-cheese and collard greens for my sides. Mac-n-cheese had some good textures but was fairly ordinary. Collard greens were watery, unseasoned, and were not transformed one bit. Unfortunately, I barely could get through the meal.

Brian V.

Yelp
Started with Bar-Balo sauced shrimp and a Sugar Creek Blood Orange Beer. Shrimp were excellent in the sauce with their homemade blue cheese dressing. Followed that with 5 Calypso wings with a side of fried squash. Waiting for wings and squash while sipping on beer....... Great wings. They had the Smokey taste and the combo of the teriyaki and the Buffalo works well together. Sweet and savory. The fried squash was great dipped in the blue cheese or ranch. Nice and crispy. I asked for a side of squash and they brought me a basket which was a huge portion even for a guy with a big appetite. I ordered other food than I have eaten previously here and everything was great as always. Come hungry and leave content after a great meal. Cheers!

April N.

Yelp
The food is AMAZING!!! Chicken wings are fabulous, pot roast , spicy sausage etc...you have to get the fried squash best I've ever had!

Enzo S.

Yelp
Great place, feels like home cooked meal with lots of drink options. Service is really nice and great. Ambiance is laid back and chill for intimidate meals.

Yelp
I recently had takeout with McCoys and I wasn't too impressed. It has been a while since I ordered food to go from this restaurant and I was really looking forward to having it as well as introducing it to my husband. We placed our order in advanced, and my husband picked it up after work. It really wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be. Everything tasted pretty bland and not well seasoned like I've known McCoys to provide really good season food. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with a side of mac & cheese and potato salad. He ordered the tenderloin tips with collard greens, and Okra. His tenderloin tips were overdone, even though we are fully aware of their policy with ensuring it was Cook medium well. However, this was cooked well, well done! I don't know what the change has been over the years with the service for food although I haven't been here in the last four years it was a little upsetting to taste something that I was hoping was going to be good and wasn't.

Daniel K.

Yelp
Delicious ribs! Smokey and tender, 10/10! Cornbread was amazing too. Wish we had BBQ like this up North!

Matt S.

Yelp
Love McKoy's smokehouse. The pulled pork was off the charts good. Our server was great as well.

Alison G.

Yelp
ESPN's GameDay was held in Charlotte on 9/2/2023, the hubby and I made our merry way down on 9/1 as we are Gamecock's fans and we were ready to see Univ. of SC kick UNC's a$$. Note, no a$$es were kicked other than Univ. of SCs, but let's not talk about that. After GameDay, we had some drinks downtown and needed to fill our bellies. We decided on BBQ, turned to Yelp and found this spot. The restaurant is open and on the larger side, we waited at the host side and I analyzed what I saw, one bartender and two servers working the floor to include the host stand. We waited for a bit and one of the servers sat us. The same person who sat us was our server and she quickly got out drink orders, we just got two waters. Can you believe it? If you follow my reviews, then you know I DRANK, I guess I had had enough LOL. We ordered wings (sweet BBQ flavor) to start off with and they were good, with a smokey flavor, the ranch was also enjoyable, but the consistency was thinner than I prefer. For our entrees the hubby got McKoy's BBQ sandwich (pulled pork), it comes topped with coleslaw, but the hubby got that on the side. As a side he got green beans and potato salad. The sandwich lacked flavor, was dry and overall my husband did not really enjoy it and as a result he didn't eat much of it. The coleslaw was pretty good, but the potato salad was lacking and was oddly and overly mustard-y. I got the pulled chicken sandwich with the coleslaw on the side. Again, the sandwich was lacking flavor and needed something more. I got mac and cheese on the side and that was delicious and was the highlight of our lunch. Unfortunately, I don't recommend this restaurant and left disappointed. On a good note, our server was fantastic and attentive, in addition to all the food coming out quickly. I was surprised by this due to the limited number of employees working the floor.

Joe B.

Yelp
This place consistently has the best wings in Charlotte. They're smoked and you can have them finished on the grill for that perfect char. Their house made sides are also incredible with fried squash, okra, decadent mac & cheese, and amazing fresh cut fries. The staff is super friendly and attentive. McKoy's has a full bar with great specials and cheap ice cold beer... what could be better?!

Wesley F.

Yelp
What a fantastic find! We were headed to the Charlotte Oktoberfest festival, but unfortunately, you can't bring your dogs in. So we looked for a close restaurant on Yelp, with outdoor seating that is dog friendly. I sorted by number of reviews, and found found McCoy's Smokehouse and Saloon. We will definitely be back! We started off with the nachos, which were some of the best I've had in a long time. I personally like nachos like this that are individually prepared and not just a pile of chips, meat and cheese. (My wife prefers that kind.) The beers were great. For an entree to share, we went with some blackened shrimp with fried squash and fried okra. All of it was good, but the fried squash stole the show! Just amazing. I'd love to try to make some myself. The atmosphere on the patio this cool, fall evening (69°) was just perfect. Awesome restaurant, can't wait to come back!

Michelle B.

Yelp
I always enjoy visiting McKoy's. I know I can watch a football or basketball game on myriad televisions. The food is varied and scrumptious. The atmosphere is friendly and laid-back. On my last visit, service was a bit slow but otherwise, the wait staff are friendly and attentive. This was my third visit, by the way. The mac & cheese is on point. It is warm and comforting. On my last visit, I tried the Philly Cheese on a wrap. It lacked the amount of cheese I would expect. This will not be my go-to dish. The cocktail menu is varied with a full bar on hand. I ordered the Barstool's Martini (New Amsterdam Pink Whitney Vodka, McKoy's House Made Lemonade, Shaken & Served with a Sugared Rim). It was delightful! I thought I wanted a salt rim, but the sugar rim was a pretty good call. This is my new favorite! I would visit McKoy's regularly but, unfortunately, it is not in my neck of the woods.

Randall W.

Yelp
This place has it all. The cozy atmosphere was so inviting on a chilly winter day. The service and friendly staff made for an even better experience. And their BBQ and sides were really good. I highly recommend the Pit Roast Pot Roast.

Larry G.

Yelp
This was another place highly recommended while in Charlotte. I heard it gets busy so I called in an order. It was only a 10 min drive to get there from my hotel. When you walk in, look around. Pictures on the wall are fun to look at. The rustic country look has it made. The smell walking up to the building was enough to make me hungry. 5million wings sold Singh is no joke. The staff was super friendly and kept me busy while I waited to pay for my food at the bar. I ordered the triple threat sandwich to go (no pic). Got back to my hotel and sat down to eat. I stated with the sausage, really good. It was split and fried to crisp up. The pulled pork was nice and juicy. So many places are dry, not here. Finally the beef pot roast made this sandwich over the top. If you are in town you need to stop by.

anna m.

Yelp
I ordered a side of Mac & cheese. The noodles were way over cooked & there was no salt whatsoever. If I had tasted it blindfolded, I would not have guessed it was Mac & cheese. Told waitress it wasn't good & asked to swap for something else. She sent manager out who argued with me & told me that is what it is supposed to taste like. He said I could get another side but would have to pay for it. A few minutes later he came out with the side. Told him I wasn't paying for it & he said he wouldn't charge. Very argumentative. This place used to be a favorite & I will not go back.

Jack K.

Yelp
Always amazing!! The wings are absolutely the best I've ever had anywhere. The pot roast is excellent albeit a large meal. We hit McKoy's every time we're in town.

Erin F.

Yelp
We are in Charlotte for the night and looking for something locally. Reviews seemed like this would be a no brainer. We ordered take out to bring back to the hotel. I ordered a half rack of ribs with mac & cheese. For award winning ribs, I'm surprised at how difficult they were to eat. I expected ribs that fall off the bone but I couldn't even cut through these with a knife. There was a huge fat strap that made it impossible to separate, making these incredibly hard to eat. The smokey taste was decent but I expected more based on the hype. My boyfriend got the Diablo chicken sandwich with mashed potatoes. The chicken was a pounded out 1/2 chicken breast, incredibly small for the price. There was also nothing spicy about it.. no diablo sauce, no jalapeños, no pepper jack cheese. It was literally a sad chicken sandwich with LTO & mayo. I assume this was a kitchen mix-up but should have been an easy mix-up to spot seeing as it was missing everything spicy. Sides were the only redeeming thing on the plate, but I will add that the mac & cheese was a little gritty in texture. Based on the reviews, we definitely expected more so it was a bit disappointing.

Misti M.

Yelp
Became "stranded" in Charlotte tonight and had a great meal and service. Kudos to the hardworking team at McKoy's.

Shane M.

Yelp
Y'all. The Old Fashioned's were top notch. And the food...outstanding! That plus some super service makes this place a destination. Cheers from a Clemson alum the night before we face SMU. #GoTigers #McKoysrocks

Tia B.

Yelp
Here with friends at operation Christmas child processing center for the weekend and this place was a suggestion from our hotel we are staying at. Definitely not a disappointment food was great, service was good, and facilities were clean. We had the pulled pork plate, with okra and mashed potatoes. The pot roast with green beans and mac n cheese. For a starter the potato skins.

Kevin C.

Yelp
I had hopes for this place because the location is super convenient to meet up with friends. The wings are grilled and smoked; I got them with barbalo sauce. The flavor was great! The Mac and cheese was dry and had little flavor; a definite pass. The greens were good; well cooked and seasoned. The BBQ was average, as were the sauce options. A good smoky flavor in the meat, but needs more something more. The drink specials are terrible; the drinks are overpriced! The service was average. We need a good bar in this area with good food and cheap drinks. The search continues.

Tim M.

Yelp
This place is a lunch staple, everything is consistent and the burgers are amazing. The service is great and they get you in and out making it great for lunch. There is parking which makes it even more convenient for lunch.

Hnou V.

Yelp
Our waitress was wonderful. We had a huge party come in but she efficiently got drinks and food ordered. She even brought out the food first for the crying toddlers at our table. My fiance and I ordered the LTD. My favorite was the pulled pork. As for sides, I recommend the fried okra and corn bread. The corn bread was really unique. It tasted a bit like bread pudding. It has actual kernels of corn in there for little bits of sweetness. The iced tea is alright.

Matt J.

Yelp
Best wings in Charlotte. Owner and staff are great people. Top 5 dining experiences I've ever had.

Bill S.

Yelp
Very good smoked pulled pork. Highly recommend the loaded fries with it. Other favorite items included the cornbread, fried squash, mac and cheese, collared greens and the homemade coconut pie (almost a sugar cream pie with toasted coconut). Service was a little show the night we were there, but the place was slammed with a few big groups. The restaurant space is casual--lots of screens with NBA, MLB, PGA and monster trucks playing on every wall and over the bar. Diverse staff and diners. Very welcoming.

Jim K.

Yelp
Outstanding Carolina BBQ. Went with the Pulled Pork Platter with fries and green beans. The flavor was excellent. Ordered a coconut pie for desert and ended up ordering a second one. Great service and atmosphere.

James B.

Yelp
Robby and Amy are the bombastic best!!! The food and service is genuine, kind, and very well mannered. For the southern bbq we all want yet can't find without doing it ourselves...Game changer. This place has it! James

Tim G.

Yelp
Holy smokes this place is phenomenal!!! The McKoy's Smokehouse Wings are absolutely amazing. I hadn't even noticed them on the menu, as I was planning to have pulled pork. Our server recommended them as the best thing on the menu, so I decided I had to try them. In addition to the pulled pork platter. The wings are out of this world good. Lot's of meat for little bones, great smoky flavor, perfectly prepared, and the sauces were good too. I could have (and would have) made a meal out of just the wings if I had known how good they were! Then it was on to the pulled pork platter. The pork was super moist and tender, a little smoky but not too much flavor otherwise. Still, very good. And I love lots of sauce anyway, so this worked out great. This is North Carolina, so of course the sauces were both "Carolina Style" vinegar-based. One was traditional vinegar and the other was vinegar with tomato. Both were very good. The spicy pinto beans were basically like chili without the meat. Good flavor, and certainly had some kick. The potato salad was pretty good (not great), but my understanding is that it isn't made in house so I didn't have high expectations here. The service was also excellent. Every single waiter who passed by stopped to check on us to see if we needed anything. They were all very friendly as well. I would go out of my way to stop here just for the wings, but the whole experience was great. Anytime I am anywhere near McKoy's I will make a point of stopping by for a meal, and you should too!

Richard B.

Yelp
Best BBQ in Carolina. Fantastic Service Great friendly crowd I would recommend this place to anyone in the area. I'm from out of town but when I come back into town I will definitely be eating here again.

Camille J.

Yelp
Impeccable service by Alicia. She was super friendly and didn't mind offering suggestions for what to order. She shared with us that all their sides and dressings are made in-house. We started with double grilled wings in calypso and the cornbread. Both were hits! The cornbread is unlike anything you've ever had. We brought our leftover slice home and think it will be delicious with a piece of country ham! Glad we got the double grill on our wings and they were so tasty. Next, we shared the LTL combo with slaw, potato salad and squash. I was not a fan of the slaw (bland) or the potato salad, but the squash was on point. It is sliced very thin and then fried. It is not wet and is seasoned well. The ribs, pulled pork, and chicken were all great. The beef pot roast tasted scorched. Loved the atmosphere and chill vibe here. Some hits and misses, but a solid pick.

Jarod L.

Yelp
The food is waaaaay better than it needs to be. You can tell they actually care about all of the individual elements that go into great BBQ: the spice rub, the smoker time, and the finishing sauce. Ambiance is comfortable, not loud, prices are very reasonable. All of the staff are super nice and quick without being pushy or over the top. Just friendly young people. The smoked chicken wings were amazing, and that's coming from a Buffalonian. Just get them with blue cheese. Ranch is for communists.

Dan C.

Yelp
Incredible BBQ, so smoky and tasty. Did the platter, 4x meats, 2x sides. Smoked potroast and ribs were my favs but all good. Sides were also good, highly recommend the fried okra, perfectly crisp and lightly seasoned. Aint gonna lie, we all had the meat sweats on the way out and could barely move after eating all that!!! Definitely will be back !!!

Michelle F.

Yelp
My two favorite things here is the St. Lewis Ribs and Mac and Cheese. The ribs have a lovely smoke ring when you take a bite and they have lots of meat that falls off the bone. Mac and Cheese has that ooey gooey flavor that you expect from a baked bbq favorite at a southern picnic. I washed it down with a fresh iced tea and was also happy with the sautéed mushrooms and green beans. Beef tips had good flavor with sautéed onions and mushrooms with the demi glaze but we both felt the meat was a bit chewy and over cooked. Still tasted good just maybe had too long in the pan. Overall, our service was friendly and fast and I would definitely come back!
