The 15 Best Damn Sandwiches in Philly, According to Eater Contributors | Eater Philly

"A Philly sandwich so iconic it had to be trademarked. The Schmitter® at McNally’s Tavern is a meaty work of culinary art: juicy rib-eye, thinly-sliced onions, fried salami, thick red tomatoes, American cheese, and signature sauce on a kaiser roll from Conshohocken Italian Bakery." - Annemarie Dooling

The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill | Eater Philly

"For those in the know, McNally’s Tavern is the original place to go to find a Schmitter — the other local favorite steak sandwich — made with cheese, fried onions, tomatoes, salami, and a special Schmitter sauce. Contrary to what you’ve heard, it wasn’t named for former Phils player Mike Schmidt — but grab a beer and a sandwich at McNally’s and you’ll find you don’t even care." - Ernest Owens

The Best Restaurants In Chestnut Hill & Roxborough

"Open since 1921, McNally’s Tavern in Chestnut Hill has long served classic sandwiches, cocktails, and beers in massive, Viking-like mugs to people in the neighborhood. Speaking of classics, nothing’s more iconic than our favorite, “The Schmitter” sandwich. The massive cheesesteak-like combination, with beef, fried onions, and cheese, is topped with grilled salami and a housemade Thousand Island-style special sauce. " - candis mclean, alison kessler

Where to Eat and Drink After Hiking in Wissahickon Valley Park in Philly | Eater Philly

"Off the trail in Chestnut Hill, hungry hikers can take part in one of Philly’s great sandwich traditions in the very place where it was invented: the Schmitter. A cheesesteak served on a Kaiser roll with fried onions, tomatoes, salami, and a special dressing, it’s the kind of sandwich that will make you instantly forget about those granola bars you brought with you. It comes with a side of Herr’s ripples chips, too." - Dayna Evans

This tavern is an amazing location. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Every single time we go the food is amazing. We go every couple of months and it feels like we were just there yesterday.

My wife and I have been to McNally’s a few times now, and it is easily one of our favorite spots. The place has a great old school Irish and English pub vibe that just feels right. Cozy, welcoming, and full of character. We love the vibes every time we walk in. The highlight here is the “Schmitter” — an incredible sandwich that lives up to the hype. It is stacked with sliced steak, grilled salami, melted cheese, fried onions, tomatoes, and a special Schmitter sauce, all on a fresh kaiser roll. Every bite is rich, messy, and delicious. The flavors blend perfectly, and the texture has that great balance of crispy, gooey, and hearty. It is the kind of sandwich that makes you plan your day around getting one. The service is always on point. They still use handwritten checks, which feels almost surreal in 2025, but it fits the charm of the place. Today, we made a special trip to Chestnut Hill just for the Schmitter. There happened to be a spring festival going on, and we walked in at 4:58, not knowing they close at 5 on festival days. Usually, they close at 8. We would never intentionally walk into a bar right before closing, but we honestly had no idea. Even with the late arrival, the staff (Kate) welcomed us without hesitation. We ordered drinks and sandwiches and were treated just like everyone else. No rush, no pressure, just great service. We also grabbed a slice of chocolate cake to go, and it was fantastic. McNally’s is a gem. If you are anywhere near Chestnut Hill, this place is absolutely worth the visit.

This was our first time stopping in here. It was very busy, but we didn't have to wait long to get a table for two. The sandwiches were absolutely delicious. The house lager was pretty tasty too. I definitely recommend stopping in here and giving something a try!

Google
McNally’s Tavern Chestnut Hill located at 8634 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19118 is a world class Tavern/Pub/Restaurant! Family owned and run since its inception in the 20’s, this place has some really great food offerings. Their sandwich the “Schmitter” is a cheesesteak/grilled salami/sauce combination that is tremendous. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. The food is stellar from the sandwiches to their desserts which are homemade. Try their Chocolate cake as it’s pretty unbeatable.

Google
I have been coming here for years. The food iis excellent! My only issue is, when I arrive, and the place just opened, so it’s empty, they don’t seat you until my other party has arrived. I have friends who own restaurants, and they seat you, because patrons will spend money and eat and drink, while they wait for their party to arrive. Otherwise excellent!!

Google
They make you feel like you’re right at home here! Love the historical vibe as well as the un suspecting signage at the front. It’s not a place that boasts or tries to bring people in unnecessarily. I had the turkey club and my husband got the Tobias. Both were so delicious and fresh.

Alex Studd

Google
Had a wonderful lunch at McNally's! It was my first time here, but it has a lot of charm and character, and so I can see why this place has so many regulars. Delicious sandwiches, and a great beer selection! I would absolutely suggest for anyone looking for a no-thrills restaurant.

Google
For the proverbial "hole in the wall" this little tavern hits spot on! We went with the special of the day which was a pastrami and the soup was a ginger/carrot concoction. The staff were courteous and engaging but not overly daunting. The food itself was amazing. The pastrami was soft and flavorful with an amazing rye bread. The soup was definitely an understatement as I have seldom had such a good variation at a tavern. We will definitely make this a routine stop every time we happen to be popping by Chestnut Hill! Yelp
It was time to try the famous Schmitter sandwich and see what it was all about. I grabbed a perfectly poured black and tan to start. I chose the larger hoagie roll version and the Mrs. Opted for the Dickens which is more of a turkey dinner sandwich. We started with the turkey soup and corn and shrimp chowder. Both were very tasty and at a good temperature. The Schmitter came out in all its glory with the special Schmitter sauce on top. The homemade sauce is pretty special. Both sandwiches were very good. The flavor was incredible and it was more than I could eat in one sitting. If I was to have any complaint, it would be to have wings on the menu for an appetizer.

Yelp
The sammy gods have created this beast. . "The Schmitter " is the name I want to try the Dickens next time. . It's a thanksgiving sammy year round with this guy. Just picture this a a fresh Kaiser roll from Conshy Bakery as the foundation. Now that we have our foundation, let's begin to build this legendary sandwich. McNally's slices the beef right in front of you, add the generous amounts of cheese , fried onions, put some tomatoes on it with some grilled salami , and let's not forget about that "Schmitter Sauce" that simply amplifies that taste even more. This is what called a euphoric bliss to your taste buds . Get in here, grab the Schmitter with a frosty libation to wash it down immediately! You can't go wrong, I mean they've been kicking ass since 1921 so you know they know a thing or two. I am Nando and I approve this message.

Yelp
Went for the Schmitter which did not disappoint! Split the long roll with my son ($1 split charge but double the potato salad). Sat the bar and had an ice cold beer, watching the Phillies. The cooks were REALLY COOKING!! Hustling and entertaining to watch! Busy night, every seat filled and a few waiting! Neighborhood bar that caters to the masses, friendly outgoing customers! The couple beside us had a delicious looking chocolate cake and carrot cake. So tempting! Waitresses were super friendly, greeted us and eager to seat us. Frank the bartender, not the typical chatty type, is a master at the Guinness pour! Tip- tip in cash and your name get put in a swag drawing!

Yelp
This is a neighborhood gem. I haven't been here in a few years. McNally's expanded their dining room into what used to be the optometrist next door. My husband had The Schmitter with coleslaw on the side. I had The Tobias with potato salad on the side. Both were finger licking good- literally!! This is one of my favorite places ever since my first visit well over 30 years ago. I've always had great meals and service at McNally's.

Yelp
It took far too long to get here, but I was finally able to hit McNally's Tavern in Chestnut Hill for "The Schmitter". There were quite a few things on this menu that looked good so don't be surprised to see a follow up on this at some point, but had to talk about this sandwich and experience specifically. So we went on a Friday night around 7pm (had just landed in Philly at the airport) and the place was packed! We were lucky and a couple was leaving shortly after we told the hostess about our party so we sat fairly quickly. Cool vibe in the place, tin mugs hanging from the ceiling and sports on all the tv's. Like I said though, crazy packed so it was loud and a bit chaotic. The Schmitter is a pretty odd sandwich honestly given what's on it. Basically a cheesesteak with onions, tomato's, salami, and their sauce that is similar to a Big Mac sauce. I'd never have thought to add salami to a cheesesteak, but here we are. The flavor was quite good, it was on a round Kaiser (you can order long roll if you want) which reminded me of donkeys place a bit, and the tomato added a nice freshness as well. The price is what you'd expect, maybe a tad bit more, for the sandwich and it comes with basic ridged chips. My girlfriend got a chicken cheesesteak that did not look appealing at all, but it did have good flavor. I believe they were melting the cheese in a broiler/salamander and it just made it look dark and burnt, but it tasted fine. All in all I enjoyed it and will come back again and get another or sample other items. The Schmitter at McNally's Tavern - Didn't Suck!

Yelp
Ive been coming here for 15 years. They make all their food in a small grill, yet, they make it with such efficiency that makes it amazing. The food is the same since day 1. You must try the Smiitter with Guiness. They have the best pour of Guiness. If you have room, try their soup also. Food is great and staff is friendly. They've expanded so they can accommodate bigger groups. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place, bc I tried to come every month or 2.

Gary D.

Yelp
Best Guinness ever! Awesome menu. Delicious chocolate, coconut and carrot cake. The Schmitter sandwich Extraordinaire.

John N.

Yelp
Everything, they've been around forever, great simple food and beerMcnallys it's is a great pub in the Chestnut hill area, your basic easy going tavern with quick wonderful food and service. Nothing fancy, or overpriced like a lot of places in the neighborhood. Their go to is the Schmitter an interesting take on the iconic Philly cheese steak, without the fancy language ( just say Schmitter, no wit or without, delicious and not incredibly healthy. You'll enjoy it, super fast service, you can be in and out within 30 mins
google avatar

Yelp
This is everyone's"local"! Neighbors are there, so are friends!fabulous sandwiches, fresh baked cakes for dessert.Hate to leave, can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
I love it here! It's nothing fancy but it's perfect. They've really perfected what they make! The service is quick and efficient. There is always a crowd but their turn around time is spot on. If you haven't been, you gotta get what they're know for, The Schmitter! So good. And their rotating soup selection is always hearty & delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
4.5 stars. Wonderful neighborhood tavern with good food and amazing hospitality. Very good Philly pub food and exceptional homemade desserts. The coconut cake is off-the-hook according to our extremely picky Real Housewife of LA sister, Ms O. Family friendly ambience and menu. Two legacy McNally sisters offer warm and memorable service. They are soooo nice! Thank you for a truly exceptional experience! What a great place! Just go!
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
Wow Great old iconic place!! It's small but packs a punch!! Draft beers from the old school bar and really solid bar food. Service was fantastic !! 2 of us had a Schmitter a cheesesteak with grilled salami. I was very impressed it was very tasty!! The salami was not hard salami but more like a Lebanon Balogna I highly recommend Another one with us has a hamburger and it was tasty and cooked to perfection A little difficult to find by design but really delicious

Yelp
This tavern is located just 10 minutes from home in Chestnut Hill across the street from the Fine Wine and Good Spirits store. ;-) I selected this place based on the positive reviews, pictures, and location. The restaurant is small with about 5-6 tables and approximately 8-10 bar stools. I ordered a regular cheeseburger that came on a Kaiser roll. I asked for Mayo, fried onions, lettuce, and tomato and instead of French fries they give you plain potato chips. The chips with the juicy burger worked good together. The burger is filling and washed down with a beer on tap. I went on an early Sunday afternoon around 1:30 and there was a little crowd there but they have covered outdoor seating if you don't want to sit inside. Because the place is small and the kitchen area is open right next to the bar, when you walk in you get to smell all the juicy seasoned flavors being cooked on the grill. I will go back when I'm ready to eat more red meat. Yum!
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
I only ate half of my huge juicy chicken sandwich because I wanted to save room for the absolutely divine coconut cake. Friendliest owner, guests, servers. thoroughly enjoyed it!
google avatar

Ellen W.

Yelp
Classic cozy rustic tavern serving up multi-generational tried and true tavern fare. At least once you must try the 55+ year old roast beef-grilled salami classic sandwich The Schmitter. My favorites include the turkey chili, St Patrick's Day corned beef meal special, and their cakes especially the Coconut Cream cake which is the best on the Hill and perhaps in the whole city. Service is always great.
google avatar

IC W.

Yelp
Best place for a casual meal in Chestnut Hill or anywhere. Even when it is super busy, like a peak dinner time, the owner will seat you promptly with a big smile. Food is excellent. Their classic George Bernard Shaw with Schmitter sauce on a Kaiser roll will make you want to come back again and again. Thanks for the drink, Anne!!
google avatar

Leroy P.

Yelp
I never ate their but the pics look good if the business knows how too cook they will fo very well from the community.

Janet D.

Yelp
Good food- seating a bit crowded but good neighborhood destination. Love their sandwiches - good service Will return!
google avatar

Debra D.

Yelp
We are from California and you can bet our last stop before getting on the plane back to LAX we make a stop here. My husband after hearing about the Schmitter had to come in and try it, I am so glad we did. The first time we were here was Feb 2022, came back today June 2022 and hope to be here again before the end of the year. All you who live close, lucky you!!! Don't miss stopping at this gem and telling Ann that Debbie & Bob from CA say hello! We recommend the Schmitter (of course), the Turkey Chili and leave room for the cakes! My favorite is the coconut, but the chocolate and carrot are good also.
google avatar

Abraham K.

Yelp
Small tavern with really friendly people. Good draft selection. Gotta try the Schmitter at least once when you're here - sliced beef and salami.
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
When my friend comes to visit from NJ, I have to take her here for the Schmidter! It's scrumptious

Matthew B.

Yelp
Wow, I can't believe how badly I was treated there. If you're looking for a good cuisine scratch this onr off the list

David N.

Yelp
Mediocre at best. Service friendly but slow. Turkey was dry Stuffing virtually inedible

Patricia B.

Yelp
We went to lunch 5 of us and were very happily surprised at all the delicious home made choices and wonderful service. I had the George Bernard Shaw. It was absolutely wonderful. Others had chicken salad bacon burger chicken and were very pleased. It is cozy , comfortable and very charming atmosphere.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
McNally's is hands down the best neighborhood pub/restaurant! You will rarely go and not see someone from the McNally family. The food is excellent from the soups, chicken salad club sandwich, the famous Schmitter, to Thanksgiving all year with the Dickens. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. And don't leave without a piece of both the chocolate and coconut cake!

Linette K.

Yelp
Service was good, the menu is VERY limited though. They didn't have good options for kids.
google avatar

Rush K.

Yelp
Great food and booze! I had the mushroom burger at the bar and a glass of wine. Mmm! Oh, and I started with a cocktail but I can't remember what it was. Either a martini of a whiskey. The bartender was really nice... and gorgeous! The owner was there too and he was engaging but not intrusive. I was there at about 5:30 so I beat the crowds so it was nice and quiet.

Marjory W.

Yelp
Philadelphia must visit- best cheesesteaks, Schmitter heavenly. Homemade cake desserts!! Fantastic
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
I really like it here. You step in off the sidewalk and it takes your eyes a minute to adjust. This is good because you really need to stand there and take it all in. The old bar, the old bottles on the back bar, the creaky wooden floors and all the people. The good part is that not only is the staff extremely nice...but the people that eat and drink here are as well. It's a great vibe to be a part of. I'm guilty of saying I've only had one item on their menu...the Schmitter. I'm not going to delve into what's on it as that's easy enough to figure it out. Suffice it to say that I have a shirt with the build for the sandwich on the back of it...I guess you could say I'm obsessed. So stop in, grab a cold beer at the bar and a Schmitter....and I also hear their cake is a great way to finish off the meal...
google avatar

Adrian S.

Yelp
I've only had one sandwich here and that was The Dickens, and my goodness was that a sublime experience. I live in New York, but this is by far the best sandwich I have ever had. There is really nothing like it. It's the perfect mix of sweet (cranberry sauce), savory (freshly-sliced turkey), and the perfect bridge between the two flavors (a stuffing made with thyme, basil, and oregano). If COVID has ruined this past year for you, please take some time to visit McNally's and have one of their specialty sandwiches. The Dickens will undo any hardships endured from this virus.
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
I have had the Schmitter at the ballpark, but since I was local to the original pub, I figured I would stop in and try something else. The place is small on the inside. Plenty crowded during lunch without a lot of floor space. I ordered the Dickens which is like the Thanksgiving sandwich. It came out pretty quickly and had a decent amount of meat. I found it to be a little flavorless. The stuffing was boring. Overall I would try something else next time, but wouldn't go out of my way to do it. I also thought it was overpriced for the portion of food you get. I had the sandwich and a coke, with tip it ran $20.
google avatar

Mel S.

Yelp
Would never have thought to come here but was visiting a friend and he thought I should try it. I would also rarely order a cheese steak but wow was it tasty and had just the right amount of perfectly cooked onions. It did not look like much coming out but what a surprise. We also shared a chocolate cake which was surprisingly moist and we finished if off. I normally stick to flourless as I want that rich dense chocolate in each bite but their chocolate cake was worth saving room for.

Karimah R.

Yelp
Been to Mcnallys two times I was very satisfied with the food drinks atmosphere was very clean and nice service was great..

Kathy M.

Yelp
Great place to hang out with friends and eat the famous Schmitter. Soups are delicious.

Monica C.

Yelp
Went there for the first time on a Wednesday at noon. We met the sisters that own the place and they were very friendly. The atmosphere was nice and the food was excellent. Will definitely go back when in Philly.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
A very good Schmitter Sandwich. The Schmitter has soft and chewy bread. The sauce is very similar to thousand island but a bit more savory. The salami is baked and very good. The chipped steak on the sandwich was just slightly more cooked and less tender and juicy than I'd prefer. This is a very tasty overall flavor combo with a minor execution flaw in the steak. Because I was really into the flavors and savoriness, I'm still assigning 5 stars.
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
Been coming here for years, like almost 20 when you could smoke at the bar. While I hate to say it the prices have gone way up and the quality and atmosphere has deteriorated. I would say there are better options on the Hill. Campbell's has really impressed me with the menu and nice vibe. I'd say go to Campbell's for dinner and then get coconut cake from McNally's to go for desert. Also, the new room at McNally's while providing extra space is really loud and has zero personality. Has a bit of a Denny's feel.
google avatar

Randy K.

Yelp
The Cheers of Chestnut Hill. And worth the trip to the top of Gtown Ave for the comfortable vibe, great pints, and excellent comfort food. The Schmitter is the classic here and a Philly sandwich icon but don't sleep on the rest of the food. Save room for a slice of cake homemade like at grandma's for Sunday dinner. And for a Friday lunch- a Schmitter with a proper Guinness followed by the winning pairing- Coconut cake washed down by Mad Elf.! Need I say more - other than you have a piece of heart...Thanks for the memories....
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
I was skeptical about how a piece could receive such a high rating being nestled among a number of other restaurants in Chestnut Hill. Well it is worth the hype. The Schmitter was amazing, the service fantastic, and the coconut cake. That coconut cake was one of the best desserts I have had in a very long time. Very long time. The buttercream icing, fluffy cake, coconut flavor... I could go on, but give it a shot and have a great time with good people!

David S.

Yelp
Medicore food. Overcharged me in my bill Messed up amount on gift cards too Overrated
google avatar

Janet P.

Yelp
Always a great treat of a local gem. The soups are really good and the sandwiches feature really fresh ingredients. Sleeper treat is the turkey burger. The cakes, chocolate and carrot, are THE BEST. Decent beer selection and great crowd watching. Don't be surprised to see a weeding party on the weekend.
google avatar

Dennis F.

Yelp
I love stopping by McNally's whenever I'm in Chestnut Hill. The food is always fresh and made right there in front of you. If you need any suggestions, I would say to definitely get the Schmitter. You will be disappointed. I should also say that the staff is always friendly!

Tyler W.

Yelp
Amazing service with an incredibly friendly environment that's walking distance from just about anywhere in chestnut hill

Barry E.

Yelp
Food reliably good, staff always friendly and helpful. The menus is simple and the ambiance is pretty much a local bar with a simple menu. I (and my family) have been enjoying McNally's for more than 20 years and it has never disappointed.

John T.

Yelp
Very good service and The Schmitter is a must have if your in the area. The Dickens and the Tobias are also very good and worth the try if you have already experienced the Schmitter. Went in for a sandwich and great Bloody Mary this past Sunday... had a great time and will be back again!
google avatar

Ed J.

Yelp
What is there left to say about this Hill institution? Only that they are not resting on any laurels. The Schmitter is still the excellent, delicious, satisfying mound of meat and sauce it has always been! (I suppose they have made one accommodation to the New Roaring '20s: if you ask for gluten-free bread, they have it.) Try the chocolate cake!
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
This is my own stupid brain talking but I am pretty sure Donkey was in Philadelphia, stopped at McNally's for lunch and thought to himself, 'I am going to open a place like this in Camden.' My limited literacy skills can not describe McNally's awesomeness!! Marie, the over-worked under paid step sister was awesome and patience while I changed my order 3 times. The schmitter is better than the description. Everything was so awesome I got the homemade carrot cake and it was awesome in it's own right!!
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
Neighborhood standby with great atmosphere and delicious pub food. Very family friendly.
google avatar

Edward A.

Yelp
They should get 5 stars for the chicken soup They should get 5 stars for the Schmitter sandwich They should get 5 stars for the coconut cake They should get 5 stars for Liz our server They should get 5 stars for Vince Williams who made me go What a great outdoor lunch
