Authentic Indonesian market & takeout with home-style dishes

"Find Indonesian-style porridge, called bubur ayam cirebon, during colder months at Medan Kitchen. Chef and owner Siu Chen makes sure the soupy porridge is seasoned just right before garnishing it with shredded chicken, shrimp chips, Chinese doughnuts, peanuts, and fresh herbs. The market-style format of the restaurant renders it more ideal for meals on-the-go, although there is usually some limited outdoor seating available." - Eater Staff

"Ever since Kat profiled Mama Drive-By Kitchen, I’ve been following their every move. Finding out which two mom-and-pop restaurants from opposite corners of LA will be paired up next gives me something to look forward to every week. This go-around it was Gamboge and Medan Kitchen, but I didn’t place my preorder fast enough because procrastination is my favorite sport, so I missed out on Gamboge’s Cambodian contributions. I did, however, get to try nasi padang and nasi bungkus from Medan Kitchen, an Indonesian spot that opened in Rosemead last year. I can confidently say this was the best meal I’ve had in 2021, and also that banana leaves are the ideal takeout box. The leaves on both dishes unfurl to reveal sweet bricks of rice, loaded with beef rendang, chicken, boiled egg, and, in the case of the nasi bungkus, sambal belacan with just the right amount of funk, spice, and fishiness. -AS" - the infatuation los angeles crew

"It’s incredible that 78-year-old Siu Chen went from home cook to restaurant owner during the pandemic. The family-run operation is now Rosemead’s hub for Indonesian fare with beef rendang, lemongrass fried chicken, and grilled pork satay. It’s a takeout model where all food is prepared and pre-packaged, so order early or walk-in and try your luck." - Eater Staff

"In Rosemead, Medan Kitchen delivers pitch-perfect Indonesian set meals that rotate daily—turmeric or coconut rice with beef rendang, fried chicken, spicy egg, and irresistible crispy anchovies with peanuts—and specialties like bubur ayam cirebon (Indonesian-style porridge with shredded chicken, shrimp chips, Chinese doughnuts, peanuts, and herbs); everything is reasonably priced and keeps well for later." - Eater Staff

"Working with MAMA on social videos and Drive-By Kitchen helped this Rosemead market and takeout spot, led by 77-year-old Indonesian chef Siu Chen, expand beyond a primarily Indonesian customer base — Johan Arifin, the store’s manager and Chen’s son-in-law, said, “MAMA helped introduce our food to other people.”" - Jean Trinh
