"Before appearing in Netflix's Street Food, Valentina Hernández, known as Doña Vale, was already popular in Central de Abastos, the largest food market in Oaxaca City. For more than 30 years, she’s been preparing the same thing at her stand: a simple meal of memelas to which she spreads a little lard, and tops them with quesillo, tasajo, or eggs cooked on the comal. Get one for breakfast that’s bathed in her famous chile morita or tomatillo sauces, and be prepared to wait in line." - liliana lopez, kylie han

"In the heart of Oaxaca’s Abastos Market sits a bright blue stand named Memelas Doña Vale. Here, you will meet Vale Pacheco, the esteemed Doña Vale, who makes a version of Oaxaca’s iconic memelas that are so renowned, they earned her a spot on Netflix’s Street Food. Memelas are a Oaxacan signature dish: a small corn tortilla that’s given a pinched rim while cooking to hold myriad toppings, whatever you choose. The stars of this place — besides Doña Vale herself — are the giant molcajetes where she prepares two very different and astoundingly nuanced salsas: one dark, smoky salsa made with chile morita and miltomate (green tomatillo), and another red tomato and green chile salsa. Order a couple of memelitas and ask for grilled tasajo, eggs cooked on the comal, or pork ribs on the side. For drinks, you have two options, delicious Oaxacan hot chocolate or cafe de olla. "She earned a spot on Netflix’s Street Food for good reason: Her crisp-edged memelas are nothing short of profound, made using lard (optional), fresh cheese, and a variety of toppings like thinly sliced grilled beef or pork rib." - María Ítaka

Epic. Truly. Some places are overrated. This place is about tradition and consistency. The most incredible experience! Especially having the queen, Dona Vale herself sit and have breakfast at our table. A truly unforgettable experience. On top we ran into @mario.come.oaxaca for breakfast. Magical.

Memelas Doña Vale lives up to its reputation with absolutely delicious memelas at an incredible value. The flavors are authentic, and it’s no surprise this spot is so popular. There was a long line when I went on the weekend, but it moved relatively quickly, and the wait was worth it. One thing to note, as others have mentioned, is to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings while you’re there. If you’re in Oaxaca, this is a must-visit spot for a truly local experience!

Featured on a Netflix "Street Food" Episode. This was in an open air market deep in a Oaxacan neighborhood. 20 minute walk from Centro. As usual, this deep I was only gringo I saw the whole time there. My kind of place. 1) Chocolate de Aqua. 2) Memelas with Huevos, Morita sauce & tomato sauce with Habanero & Serranos. * Making of the chocolate water. * Full house with a line waiting.

Finding Doña Vale was quite a trial for us but wow I’m glad we did! I almost bailed after getting lost and then being stuck in line with a bunch of gringos on a tour, but I’m glad I didn’t. These memelas are worth the hype. SO GOOD. Get a few.

Truly one of the greatest food experiences we had in Oaxaca! The market is pretty busy but it’s worth it to make your way through to eat here. We waited for like 10 min for a seat at the counter but well worth it. Go early because they close at noon and you’ll be sad you missed it. I will never forget those memelas in my life.

I was so happy to finally try Doña Vale's famous memelas, ad they were worth the wait: I got one with the salsa morita and egg, and one with the tomate salsa and egg, and both were delicious. There is a little bit of queue to get seated, but the staff is so nice and fast that you will get your seat in no time

This is the best street food we’ve had in Mexico - by far! Doña Vale’s memelas are definitely worth a trip to this market (otherwise, there’s not much reason to go). Be sure to get there before 12:30, or they may run out of food. You’ll probably wait in line for a while (20-30 mins), but it’s worth it! A must-visit. An important note: watch out for the pickpockters in this market. Hold everything in front of you in a bag rather than in your pocktes.

I recently tried out Memelas Doña Vale's food and it was definitely worth the stop! However, finding the spot inside the swab meet was a little challenging. Despite this, I can understand why the place has gained some hype, especially after being featured on a Netflix special. The food was just OKAY.
