London’s Best Listed Building Restaurants Are Quirky and Historic | Eater London

"This early 19th century Grade I-listed church, after a painstaking restoration and refit, now hosts nine traders, a grocery store, wine cellar and cocktail bar underneath its Romanesque roof. Pop in for gelato at Badiani, pide at Lala or bao buns at Steamy & Co. Cocktails are served at the altar, where the deconsecration process appears to be ongoing." - Hilary Armstrong

Visited on Thursday, 03rd July 2025. This location had been on my bucket list, and it didn't disappoint. There are multiple choices available in terms of savoury, sweet, or alcoholic substances to eat. We selected Beast & Field for their delicious steak sandwich (£16 each) and dirty chips. Not cheap, but the location in London and the setting of the building, as well as the quality of the food, justify it. We were given a beeper, which worked even though we had gone up 2 floors to the roof terrace. Food is cooked fresh (well, the meat is), so you have to wait. Once the beeper went off, we were able to bring the food up to the terrace. The sandwich was lovely, but the dressed chips were not great, to be honest, as the chips seemed to have been re-fried. That apart, we enjoyed the roof terrace, then descended and went to the ground floor to enjoy a beer from German Kraft. Again, not cheap at £7 for half a pint, but a great setting. You can sit where you like, it seems, regardless of what food choice you make. The only floor we didn't visit was the crypt.

Excellent place! Randomly stumbled across it and very glad I did. Across multiple floors in a church you will find a great food hall. Plenty of different cuisines to try, enjoyed having a few different starters and a main. I honestly could have eaten here all day. Nice to find there was a rooftop for the good weather. Plenty of different bars aswell for drinks. Highly recommend a visit for something different in Mayfair.

Absolutely beautiful venue! Set inside a converted church, the atmosphere is truly unique. It does get very crowded, though, and finding a seat can be a challenge—especially during peak hours. I love coming here in the winter since it’s warm inside, though the basement is noticeably colder (but much quieter). They also have a rooftop area with limited seating, which is a nice bonus. Food prices are on the higher side, but the drinks are delicious and worth a try.

Google
Lovely food hall set within a former church, with multiple food options and seating over two floors. It can be quite busy, with music occasionally loud, but nice place for a drink or bite when in the area. Outside seating is also available upstairs, accessible from near the TexMex. Prices can vary from quite affordable for London to remembering you’re in Mayfair. A few places don’t have substantive vegetarian options, but many do. Lift and stairs help connect the floors. Toilets available in the basement. They look nice on the surface, but some didn’t flush or have seats, and only one hand dryer in the women’s so a bit limited functionality.

This place is seriously cool — it’s set inside what used to be an old church, now beautifully renovated into a unique dining space. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else, with stained glass and high ceilings giving it a dramatic yet laid-back vibe. There’s a variety of food options, almost like a collection of food trucks under one roof, offering everything from burgers to international street eats. The vibe is absolutely incomparable — a great spot to hang out, try different dishes, and soak in the creative setting. Highly recommended for something out of the ordinary!

Google
This is a hidden gem and a brilliant use for an old church! It's now filled with coffee shops, restaurants and a lovely plant shop. There's a large seating area in the middle or some limited seating next to the food shops. The variety of food is really good, so brilliant for a group who all have different tastes on food!

Google
Interesting food mall, not easy to find a seat especially for big group. Best to be there early. We tried the ramen, fish and chips, nachos, handmade pasta and the cheese cake. I think the best is the lamb sauce pasta and cheese cake. Nice ambience unfortunately it is a bit noisy also kind of smoky on the second level.

After exploring London, we found ourselves at Mercato Mayfair, a stunning food hall set within a beautifully restored church. The ambiance alone is worth the visit, stained glass windows, ambient lighting, and a buzz of culinary activity that feels both reverent and lively. We decided to try Pad Thai House on the first floor, and it was a delightful choice. The red curry was the star of the evening, rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors that warmed us from the inside out. It was evident that fresh ingredients and authentic recipes are at the heart of their cooking. The staff were friendly and efficient, adding to the overall positive experience. It’s not every day you enjoy a meal that feels both comforting and elevated, all within such a unique setting.

Yelp
What a unique venue for a food court. This food hall is located in what used to be a church. There are various food stalls on 2 floors plus a bar in the basement. The food stalls offer a diverse array of international cuisine from ramen, Italian, to Indian and Thai. We tried the spicy beef ramen and it was phenomenal. Super flavorful broth with lots of tensor beef brisket. The tagliatelle bolognese from the Italian stall was excellent as well.this is a must visit for anyone traveling to London.

Yelp
What an awesome place to visit! This is a large food hall with a lot of different vendors. I highly recommend the handmade pasta and the gelato spots. Wow! A little pricey but worth the money. The seating can be super limited so be wary of when you arrive and if you have a large party then be prepared to share tables with other people or have to wait for space. It can also be quite loud.

Yelp
Who would have ever thought I'd be fine dining in a church. I really love this place. It's a food hall in a church with so many different things to choose from. Yet I only chose one. The handmade pasta place. I had to do some googling but I believe it's called Dez Amore. My wife and I were hooked. We ate in person once. The other times it was a zoo so we did takeout All together we ate at the pasta place 3x!!! All the pastas we tried .... - Tagliatelle Cacio Pepe (cheese wheel) - Tag with truffle sauce - bolognese - Caserece Carbonara We added porchetta bacon and Parmesan for each plate except the Bolognese. My fav was the Carbonara.

Yelp
Food hall located inside a church. We arrived here before it started to get busy for lunch. This place offers many food options. There is Mexican food, Italian food, Indian food, pizza, ramen, steak, burgers, lobster rolls, matcha, gelato, coffee, and more. My mom and I opted to try out the nachos from Club Mexicana. We ordered the loaded nachos. This had tortilla chips, ground beef, queso, pico de gallo, pickled jalapeños, guacamole, chili lime salt and chipotle oil. This has to be the best nachos I have ever tasted. So flavorful. Everything it had tasted perfect. Portion size was good for 2 or 3 people to share. Wished we tried more of the other food here. Will have to do that on my next visit.

Yelp
Housed in a former Church, The Mercato Mayfair is a food hall on steroids. It's grand, busy and full of so many options. When we walked in on a Friday evening, it was jam packed. There are many communal dining tables and some smaller intimate tables lining the perimeters. You place your order at a food stall, pay and then they give you a light up pager to let you know when your order is ready. There are multiple levels at MM with food stalls. Pretty much anything you can think of is here: Italian, Bao Buns, Ramen, Lobster Rolls...you name it, you can probably find it here. There is also a mezzanine level that has more food stalls, an outdoor rooftop patio, and a cellar. Most of the hall was filled but the cellar level had the least amount of people in it and was really chill. If you want more of a tranquil setting, check out the cellar. We tried the homemade pasta and gelato food stalls. I would say the food was in the 2 to 3 star range. Not the best- but there are so many food stalls, I'm sure there are ones that serve better food. The real draw of Mercato Mayfair is the atmosphere, and in that realm, MM definitely delivers. I would definitely go back to try more of the food stalls and admire the uniqueness the converted church has to offer.

Yelp
A beautiful church converted to a food hall. Many options to pick from including pizza, pasta, fish and chips, ramen, gelato, pad thai and more. Great food hall for everyone to get what they enjoy! I got the pizza which was pretty good! Some family got the fish and chips and enjoyed their meals. The pad thai was also good.

Yelp
Food Hall in church building, great gin cocktails. I had ramen and it made me very happy

Yelp
Old church turned food stall market! Great ambience with a cool and excited buzz. Any option imaginable you can find here in their three story building. Flavor was great on the pizza, pasta, and bao buns we tried.

Yelp
It was unique experience to be at a bar that used to be a Catholic church. They have kept the altar and key sections of the church. It took a bit of adjustment for me to get comfortable with the idea that the altar was the bar. The place is really nice. The place has a nice old gothic flare that makes the dining experience more enjoyable. We only had dessert during our visit. Hope to have the opportunity to try their other food during our next visit to London.
google avatar

Yelp
Casual dining experience in a church is interesting and certainly worth visiting. Every vendor looked delicious but I chose fish and chip place and it was very good! It could get crowded during peak hours but if you come 5pm, you can beat the dinner rush. I would definitely come back here again for a solo travel.

Yelp
I love restaurants that use contrast! A fall hall in an old church is perfection to me. I had the Bavette Steak from Beast & Field, and I loved it. The flavor and the presentation was excellent. I recommend eating on the roof. It's a hidden gem.

Yelp
I think this is my favorite food spot in all of London. The atmosphere is unlike any other, and the food selection is remarkable. I have never been disappointed by the dishes I have tried here, and the staff are very knowledgeable. It can be hard to find a place to sit on busier nights, but overall this place is the perfect spot for dinner!

Yelp
It was an interesting experience to see a church turned into a food hall. If you like crowds and the challenge to find seats, then this place is perfect. We weren't too impressed with the Malaysian Street Food. On our way out, we had match near the main entrance. The first security guard at the door didn't check our bags. However, we noticed that this other security guard was checking bags and asking people to throw out their outside drinks. Interesting.

Yelp
It's a pretty unique concept - food court inside an old church. We arrived right after their opening time, so it wasn't really busy. Plenty of tables were available. Some of them were reserved for big parties. They have 3 level of foods varies from oysters bar, beef burger, pasta, asian cuisines, gelato, alcohol drinks, etc ... basically, you would easily to find anything to eat here. We ordered a ramen bowl, Thai egg fried rice with prawn and chicken, and Pad Thai prawn. Honestly, we didn't like the food here, but the ambiance was nice. There was staff coming to take your bowl away after you finished. I was very satisfied with the matcha drinks here and gelato. I highly recommend to try the matcha lemonade ( original and yuzu with ginger flavor).

Yelp
What a beautiful surprise, from the outside you would never know what is going on, on the inside! Mercato Mayfair is housed in the Grade-I listed St Mark's Church! This food hall has it all, it's 3 stories, with everything coffee bar, full liquor bar, gelato/desert, all types of food from different countries, and tables in the middle of the church to sit and look at the beautiful stained glass windows in the church. Definitely a must while visiting London!!!
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
I love the Mercato Mayfair! I recently had the pleasure of dining at Mercato Mayfair, and it was an experience I won't soon forget. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was inviting, with a perfect blend of modern elegance and traditional Roman Catholic decor. The staff at each stall was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, guiding us through their menus with genuine enthusiasm.
google avatar

Shanah C.

Yelp
Can't give it 5 stars because the Manager (didn't catch his name) was SOOO rude!! My friend made reservations for 6 (so crowded it's a must!) and even had to input her credit card # to hold the table. She never received a confirmation email so when we arrived, they said "sorry, we don't know what you're talking about." We asked to speak to a manager but he couldn't be bothered to look into it or offer us an alternative plan. He literally looked at me and said "stop rolling your eyes at me!" Pompous jerk! We eventually found a table upstairs and everyone went to order their food. Whether you want Asian, Mexican, Italian, seafood... it's all under one roof! This is the old St. Marks church and a lot of the decor (stained glass windows and carved wood church organ) are still present which made this a beautiful venue!! Loud and bustling with lots of history!
google avatar

Madi S.

Yelp
This is the absolute coolest establishment I've ever been to HANDS DOWN. If you are in Mayfair you need to go. They have every food you could imagine and the aesthetic of the church is awesome. The wine crypt downstairs is great and they even have a rooftop seating area. Tried the pasta spot, ice cream, and bao buns.
google avatar

Ann J.

Yelp
Eyes full and mouths full! Jealous for a roof deck table. Loved the vibes and the bao!
google avatar

Veronique C.

Yelp
Fun trendy food court located in a space that used to be a church. There's a small rooftop and the basement is not as loud as the main area, more like a wine bar vibe. Very cool place!
google avatar

Derrick C.

Yelp
The only place I would go to in this establishment is the handmade pasta and although their noodles are spot on not all the sauces are.
google avatar

John N.

Yelp
Found this place accidentally while we were waiting in line next door at the Mayfair Chippy... Saw lots of people going in and out and since we had time to kill, decided to each walk over and grab a drink... liked what we found so much we came back the next night for the full experience! Two stories of food and drink booths, music and shops... a great place to spend some time and fill your belly!
google avatar

Carrie P.

Yelp
Great ambiance and a wide selection of food and drinks from different vendors. We had the homemade pasta which was absolutely delicious
google avatar

Britney B.

Yelp
This place is so rich in history and so many food places! It was an old church turned in to cutest space! It was bustling and busy! Such a good place for dates and groups of you just pop into London! I loved it! German beer Thai food and right next door the best fish and chips. Everyone working seems to be friendly enough and quick with service. There's even a bar with a long table down in the tomb/crypt! I totally recommend this place!!
google avatar

Genevieve G.

Yelp
Beautiful old Church converted into a trendy food court style gathering place. Fun, busy and clean ambiance. You will find the perfect cocktail, beer, wine, coffee, selection of Italian, Japanese, Seafood, Steak/Burger, Malaysian and dessert food options! WARNING: Strict NO outside food or beverages allowed inside! Constant security patrol for enforcement! I had the Prawns from the Malaysian Street Food and really enjoyed the flavours. I wish the meal was a little bit more substantial but felt satisfied. One person in our group tried the Ramen with Fried tofu. The broth was quite authentic Tonkotsu style but ramen noodles and toppings fell short. Expect to pay 10-25£ per plate
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
While the convenience and excitement of having a good dozen or more restaurants within one straightforward market space was an enticement, I would not recommend Mercato Mayfair... It is as crowded as everyone says, and was wholly overwhelming. My friends and I ended up sharing a table with another party, and my parents ate standing up downstairs! Not ideal in any way. We ordered gnocchi from the fresh pasta stall, since it was the first thing we saw and was an easy crowd-pleasing option. The gnocchi were... a bit less tender than perhaps desired, but they were good! I ate them with considerable pleasure - despite not being able to hear a word my friends said the entire night.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
The food an ambiance were five star, but im docking a point for this (and maybe it's just a british thing and i have no idea)... they started clearing people out long before it closed. First you had to leave the terrace (which is lovely and somewhat hidden above the 2nd floor), so we took our food downstairs. Then they said everyone had to leave the second floor. By the time we got gelato downstairs, they were warning people there. It was an odd experience. I didn't understand why it didn't just close at closing time. All that said, if youre going early enough, I definitely recommend the experience. So many choices and seating areas.
google avatar

Walter R.

Yelp
In London on business. It was cold and raining, so we did not want to wander too far to eat. This place was a great surprise find. A beautiful setting, (a grand old cathedral), lots of food choices (a food hall/indoor farmers market type atmosphere). All the places are owner operated I believe, so every chef took pride in making great fresh dishes. We started in the basement and ate our way to the top floor. It got fairly crowded as the evening progressed, so I would recommend going a little earlier.
google avatar

Yelp
Historic Church turned Foodhall=GastroSanctification Heaven Yes!! A bustling sanctuary with local vibe and mix/match tables, quieter enclaves can be found in the wine cellars below. Upstairs alter views yielded a steaming bowl of sinfully soaked mussels, fresh oysters mignonette, and a righteously grilled sirloin that proved good steak can find its redemption in London.

Sebastien T.

Yelp
Food court located in an old church. Unfortunately food does not live up to the hype and is very variable in quality. The ramen place offers a nice salad and the italian pizza are delicious (the dough is really nice and stretchy). The Thai option is just ok while icecream servings are generous (chocolate/pear is excellent). Coffee shop is allright. Place opens early but food served starting 12PM on sunday. Service is efficient and ambiance is very tourist-oriented (ain't we all at some point?). Family-friendly as well.

Henry's T.

Yelp
Re*pur*pose: adapt to be used for a new purpose. This meaning of the term was first thought to be used circa 1984. Well now seems like a pretty solid time to utter it for the first time on Henry's Take, and here's why. The former "tenant" at this location was...St. Mark's Church. Yep, you heard me. Although the church was built 1825-1828, it was deconsecrated in 1974. After a significant period of idleness, followed by a significant restoration effort, the Mercato Mayfair was born in 2019. Sound like an anomaly? Whelp, it just happens to be the only market currently housed in an old church in London. Its current iteration features 2 floors of worldwide food options and a cellar that is worthy of your time, even if you aren't hungry or thirsty. Certainly not your traditional "food hall," it also happens to be dog-friendly and offers live music on Sundays. During our visit we sampled some Italian items from Fresco Pizza Napoletana. Although I (now with some recent hesitation) maintain that, "I'm not a bread guy," the crust featured in both the (Margherita pizza and calzone) were simply excellent. Our visit also resulted in what, I think, is the most unexpected picture that we've ever posted. Please see if you can spot it! As always, your thoughts are welcomed in the comments section below. And that's...Henry's Take. #unexpectedlondon

Yelp
What an amazing place to grab a bite and a drink!! It was absolutely stunning with a wide assortment of food stalls and mini bars.
google avatar

Tasha J.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! A food hall in an old church, just awesome! Walking in, I loved seeing some small shoppes and then moving into the large hall with stained glass windows and all the amazing vibes. Upstairs is a number of fantastic food stalls from lobster rolls to Thai food, you can find it all! In the basement is a cool area with drinks and a bit cooler temperatures. Go here, you'll love it!
google avatar

Suraj H.

Yelp
A cathedral turned into a foodcourt. Great lively ambience and food. Had a great evening here.

Charmaine C.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and decent food! The hustle and bustle mixed with regal elegance made this spot a complete vibe. Would recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a must do experience and eatery. St Marks church ceased to have regular mass in the 70s and was deconsecrated in 1773. It is an Anglican Gothic gem of a building which is located in the high end Mayfair area of London. Lots of yummy ethnic food options, trendy and in my opinion a must see, where else are you going to order a pint on an ALTAR?
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Such a cool place for a meal! Stumbled upon this and it's an old church converted to a food hall. My daughter and I had an address of a Thai place and we were pleasantly surprised to find it in this venue. Very interesting ambience with an eclectic array of establishments. Oh and the Thai food eas quite delicious!!
google avatar

Yutika N.

Yelp
What an amazing amazing place. The vibe is extraordinary. It's an old church that is now an awesome food court with an open terrace with delicious food. We tried margarita pizza with seasoning and it was cooked to perfection. It's napoleon style pizza and it's absolutely amazing. Also tried vegan miso ramen with boiled eggs. They have some very amazing chilly oil to go with ramen, highly recommend it. The drink was a new drink I've never tried before but it's perfect for summer.

Tim O.

Yelp
What a cool spot. Bustling food court in a converted church- becoming a temple of dining! These are not chain experiences, either. Various stalls with wide variety of offerings, including beer, cocktails and wine. Place is absolutely bustling. Only drawback- may have to stalk a table to be seated- so might be hard for a large party. The pizzas are top shelf. Fun- and tucked just off the main streets.
google avatar

Gabriella H.

Yelp
Excellent food and incredible ambience. Lots of great options, we had pasta and wine and gelato and all of it was great! There is even a rooftop where you can get drinks but it's usually busy especially in the summer. My only issue with this place is that since it's an old church and it's busy it gets very hot in the summer.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
Overall, great dining experience. The building is magnificent and provides a lot of visual topics for discussion. There is a variety of food and beverage (alcohol / non-alcohol) options. The food was excellent, and we will definitely return on our next visit to London.
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
We saw this on the Stanley Tucci Show and had to stop in while we were in London. This place if fantastic. We had a Pizza, and Pasta from the Pasta Shop. The pepper and pecorino cheese fettuccini was outstanding. and to top it off a bottle of reasonably priced champagne and don't forget to leave room for Gelato. This is a great experience for a food hall. Must try, and do explore all of the floors. lots to see in there.
google avatar

Brion C.

Yelp
Lunch at Mercato Mayfair, recently made famous by Stanley Tucci's episode on Italian food in London. Upscale food court in an old church. Very cool. I had the lobster roll with Padron peppers. Lots of choices for food plus Gin Cocktail and German Beer stalls. Check it out.

Lou H.

Yelp
Very busy on a Saturday night but good vibe! The pasta place we tried was good. Can't be scared of crowds if you come here. Lots of options here.
google avatar

Cindy O.

Yelp
If I could give a negative star here I would!! Horrible customer service. Don't go with kuds. We ordered a pizza at Napaliano pizza place and they burnt it and made us wait and didn't replace it!!!! Stay away
google avatar

Suzie T.

Yelp
We were walking by and saw many people entering and leaving so we decided to check it out. It was the weirdest experience ever! The building is a church and as you walk-in you notice all the small food options you can order. Also, adult drinks. We ordered a pizza, ate, and left. It felt really weird dining inside a church. (I would post a video but does not allow).
google avatar

marc v.

Yelp
Cool place and reasonable prices but was very hot inside which is why it only gets 4 stars from me. Fresh pasta was good but sauce was greasy.
google avatar

Teresa C.

Yelp
Loved this gem! The vibe and all the different small restaurants were great. Definitely a place to check out if visiting London.

Pamela S.

Yelp
Discovered this remarkable space/food court while visiting London. Set in a beautiful, and respectfully decorated cathedral, the vast space includes numerous pop-up vendors offering an excellent variety of food and drink. Indian, Thai, fresh pasta, coal fire pizza, a raw shellfish bar and South American steak come to mind, as well as a gelato shop. There is also a lovely seated Spanish Tapas restaurant. And of course at least two full bars. Excellent for big groups as you grab what you want and share a table. Also small tables as well for individuals or dates. There is even a rooftop patio. Downside? I was there on a cool, rainy Wednesday night and it was a challenge to find seating. Seating is first-come first serve. Also, the quality of food delivery differs. I received my amazing Indian food very quickly whereas my colleague's steak took a while. One other odd detail: this is a food court. So they don't want other food from outside vendors brought in, and the door man will have you check any food items in their lobby at no charge. Otherwise--an excellent experience.
