Marcus Samuelsson Comes Home | Bon Appétit

"A 2023 opening situated across from the 9/11 Memorial that continues the chef’s New York expansion; the project carries personal resonance given the chef’s history of cooking in the World Trade Center a week before the attacks and reflects his ongoing presence in the city’s fine-dining landscape." - ByPervaiz Shallwani

Metropolis Review - Financial District - New York - The Infatuation

"When your home is the that is the Perelman Performing Arts Center, you can’t just phone it in. The facade of glowing marble brings certain expectations. Metropolis, with its vast open floor plan and hodgepodge of a menu, attempts to live up to its monumental setting, but winds up trying a little too hard. This restaurant—whose full name includes "by Marcus Samuelsson'"—sits in the lobby of its FiDi venue, under a display of lights that dart across the ceiling like a futuristic race track. Allegedly inspired by New York City (similar to ), the menu offers everything from parsnip agnolotti and pigs in a blanket to “Flushing style” oysters, and curry with a mound of coconut rice. The food isn’t bad, but most dishes have one, two, or three too many elements running smack into each other. A slab of short rib that looks and tastes like a fancy McRib arrives with a spindly potato churro tossed on the side, and a piece of arctic char drowns in uni beurre blanc while pucks of raw cucumber watch from a safe distance. Somewhat appropriately, the dishes are as busy as the city itself. If you’re fine with that, and don’t mind a space that suggests a high-end condo, Metropolis works for an upscale group dinner, especially when you’re seeing a show in the building. The tables are well-spaced, reservations aren’t hard to come by, and the scattered floral arrangements help keep the room from feeling too antiseptic. You may have to politely pretend to be wowed by the food, but the view from the street really is magnificent. " - Bryan Kim

Currently writing this as I am stuck in the elevator at the metropolis with my baby. It’s been nearly an hour and we have had minimal response from elevator service and are overheating. I like this building overall, but this is simply unacceptable and extremely unsafe. I hope no one else has to experience this.

I’ve been here for a few years now and I have only a few complaints. The roof deck is amazing but only has furniture 6 months of the year which is stupid because weather is great up there more than 6 months. Not sure why but it’s like punishment and they put it out on no schedule. Finally they just put it out yesterday, May 2nd. Why so late!?!? Typical BS for this place. Some tenants here are great and others are oblivious to how elevator etiquette or personal space works. Not sure why but they act blind and ignorant most of the time. They seem to be taking over the building too. There is definitely at least one Karen here, too. Updating review again to drop to 2 stars. It’s management. New super is not great. He removed trash and so people now throw trash on floor. The place has been worse since he started. We need a new Super who doesn’t smoke dist cigs a day and does his job. Gym equipment is always broke. And when they fix it they don’t fix it correctly. Dirty gym and laundry room. God forbid they restock toilet paper. Door men were great but due to low pay they leave. Your electric bill will be through the roof here. Very Bad insulation. Elevators are usually an issue. I used to enjoy living here most of time but I wish management was better. Sometimes it seems like they don’t care at all and sometimes they do. The owner seems to be the main issue here. He’s extremely cheap. The owners and management do not honor their leases. This place is compliant in straight up illegal activity by ignoring complaints of it. Additionally, They don’t allow pets on roof but the worst pet owners live here and let their dogs poop and pee on roof daily and management lets it happen. People who use gym are hit or miss. Some are animals and abuse it and again, management does nothing.

My husband and I lived here for over two years and the building is fantastic. Great location right next to grand central. Maintenance was always responsive. I especially loved the doormen here, they treat you like family and made you feel safe. I will genuinely miss them! The only issue I had was that some of the gym equipment did not work for months but the building finally updated the equipment

Google
They use a software called AIRM that changes their listing prices daily, and after I requested a showing (which took more than a week as it's occupied) the price of one of their one bedrooms went up by more than $600/month and the old price isn't honored. I understand it might make a business sense for them to use such a technology but as a tenant I'm frustrated. I decided to move out, and now the rental price for my unit is even lower than my last rent. This is a lose-lose situation

I've lived here for almost 4 months and I have to leave a great review. The building is kept in immaculate condition and the doormen are the best of any building that I've ever lived in or visited. All knew my name within a week and they're super helpful. The amenities are excellent (ping pong, beautiful rooftop) as well. Had a few maintenance requests when I first was getting settled and everything was taken care of within about 2 days max. Love living here, they do a really nice job

Google
I loved my experience living at The Metropolis. I've lived in 5 apartment buildings in NYC, and this was by far my favorite. 99% of that was due to the staff. The doorman are beyond compare. Every single one took great care of me. The process to get packages was easy and seamless. They guided us through the pandemic with grace. And the maintenance staff was the same--available, kind, and responsive. Thank you to all of the staff who made my two years at The Metropolis some of the best I've had in NYC.

I ve lived @metropolis for some years, on and off, 4 months in a row each time. Loved the door men who treated us respectfully and were very responsible at their work. Location is also 5* . Large windows, great for winter time, especially .

Google
Horrible experience with Justin, a new employee. Despite my explanation to him that my husband works for the US government and therefore is a US federal worker, and not an international diplomat, he could not understand the difference. They do not rent to diplomats and so they were not wiling to rent to us even though I explained that we are not diplomats. Have been trying to receive back the online application fee since the application allowed us to apply with a corporate lease but was told by Justin that they do not allow Corporate leases. Justin's boss, Mary, now says that they do allow corporate leases. The main office though told me that they do not allow corporate leases. VERY confusing and disorganized. Would never rent with them ever. Very disrespectful and disappointing since my husband has served in a war zone! And very sad that Justin does not know the difference between international diplomats and US government foreign service officers. BTW, it is illegal to discriminate based on national origin so they are breaking the law in declining diplomats to apply and live in their apartment building.

Yelp
The apartment itself is beautiful, but sometimes the people can be rotten but all of that matter is resolved. We have a height of the 50th floor! With a direct view of the Chrysler Building. All of the apartments here have the same layout just with different furniture and decorations. I have made many friends in this building! Most of the majority are nice and friendly! The doormen themselves are very professional and know how to do things right! What's great as well is that I've accomplished much in this great apartment complex. For example, I have expanded my vocabulary by talking to people and now able to talk more fluently. This great, fun, professional, amazing, and awesome apartment complex has done so much for me and my family! I highly recommend choosing this as you're new home! Your's truly, Nick

Yelp
Just nice comp , and very helpful.glad to live one of the building in theirs managing

Yelp
The apartment itself was nice. Post pandemic building management quality has declined over the years. Be prepared for Marijuana, cigarette and cigar smoke to enter your apartment while the leasing office/building management does nothing to remedy the issue. Quality of residents has declined with more loud neighbors moving in. They charge you extra for the gym. They have 4 elevators but most of the time only 2 work, you'll be standing waiting for elevators to come down with line of people waiting. Leasing office/ building management is useless, they have no clue how to keep their existing tenants happy. Don't expect much from them. I would think their role could be replaced with Artificial intelligence that could do better. Doormen and porters are nice.

Yelp
I have lived here for over 3 years, and love every minute of it. The staff is professional and awesome. Andre, Max, Elvin, etc. All of them are fantastic and world class. Majority of the building are working professionals... ages early 30s through 50s I'd say from the folks I see on the elevator. We've had certain things break, and the management has immediately come and fixed it. Light bulbs, toilets, random panels and walls. From other places I've lived at, The Metropolis has the best service. Rose Associates done a fantastic job! The building has the best midtown rooftop of any residential luxury apartment complex. It's always clean, and very few use it. Gym is also awesome. The management team put in brand new washing machines and dryers in 2019. These guys really care. It's rare to see this level of service and care 24/7/365.

Yelp
Love this building and their staff. We have lived here for 4 months and we plan on renewing. We have never had problems with noise and maintenance requests get answered in 24 hours. The gym and golf simulator are a huge hit for our guests. Unfortunately they are currently doing repairs and the roof deck is closed which is a disappointment. The doorman are very friendly and quickly learned our names.

Yelp
Love the building, the gym is great, the location is amazingly convenient for commuting, the doormen and maintenance staff are the best I have ever experienced. However we are extremely annoyed by the closing of the roof and the lack of a heads up on that and the lack of a timeline. Doesn't seem we will be seeing the roof at all this summer or possibly even in 2016.

Yelp
Have lived here for about a month so far. No complaints except the walls are a little thin and you can hear those around you sometimes. Other than that, it's a great building with an unbeatable location. Just steps from Grand Central, you can be anywhere really quickly. The units are pretty spacious and they have nice, big windows. All new kitchen appliances and great closet space in my 1 bedroom... Even have large walk-closet.

James S.

Yelp
Street noise is pretty loud (16th floor), and can hear neighbors having sex pretty frequently. Doormen are nice. SUPER close to grand central! But a lot of places are closed weekends as they cater to the office crowd. Gym and amenities cost extra and you can't really cancel if you don't use it. If you move here make sure to get a high floor, the low floors are so loud.

Jeff G.

Yelp
Great building! I lived here for 2 years and loved it. The doormen are incredible and the entire staff is extremely helpful. Location is very convenient and great for commuting, but you just need to make sure you want to live in midtown and so close to Grand Central.

Yelp
Lived here for one year. Location is amazing, incredible views, modern building in very good condition. They remodeled the gym while I was there, have landscaping on the roof! Very cool ! The best thing about this place is the people. Rental office staff are professional and kind, the doormen are AMAZING. Always a warm greeting and they remember your name, even in an apartment with 53 floors! The staff of the Metropolis are truly there to help you, unlike another modern doorman building in chicago where I lived and the staff were only rule-enforcers who never helped. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We looked at a number of properties in Midtown East and this was the last one on our list to visit. It has very few vacancies and once we moved in, we realized why...great location accessible to everything; incredible staff from the front desk guys to the leasing office and the maintenance staff. The superintendent lived in the building, was always visible and extremely responsive 100% of the time! We were only in the NYC for 8 months, but we felt like family in the building and were sad to move out (relocation back to Florida). This is the first building we would check on to live in again if we ever need to live in NYC again! It far exceeded our expectations! Thanks!
