"This West Village spot has undergone a few iterations with its menu since launching in 2021. The verdict is in: the people want pizza. The specialty pizzas are named after pop music classics and small circle or rectangular-shaped icons appear next to each item, along with dimensions, so you know if it’s a NY round pie or a grandma’s pan-style square and what size is available. The I Love It When You Call Me Big Poppa is described as a Brooklyn-style 18-inch round pizza, available with up to four toppings of your choice. In addition, individual NY slices are sold from the adjoining Variety Store." - Serena Maria Daniels

"Plans are underway to open a second Metropolitan Variety location on the ground level of the 11-story Kahn Building at 7430 in New Center; the casual convenience store will offer freshly-made grab-and-go items, beer and wine, coffee, and basic pantry items and is expected to serve as an amenity for residents. The restaurant side has shifted since opening in 2021 to focus primarily on pizza: demand for its square pan pie (more of a grandma pan-style than a Detroit square) prompted a menu pivot from the original modern Cal‑Mex approach to more casual offerings, including square pan pies and New York-style pizza available by the slice from the adjoining Variety Store." - Serena Maria Daniels
"When you’re with a big group and no one can agree on where to go for dinner, head to Craft Work in West Village. This place specializes in comfort food, like chicken pot pie and spaghetti and meatballs, along with things like lamb curry and their own take on the Big Mac. There’s a full raw bar as well, in case someone you’re with really wants some oysters with their pot pie. Craft Work also has long bar tables, so your whole group can sit together and eat a variety of things you’d never expect on the same menu, but that still somehow works." - sara barron, sam faye

"I saw that Metropolitan Variety, the bar-neighborhood market-restaurant that opened in 2021 in Detroit’s West Village, has unveiled a new menu iteration designed to better fit the chill neighborhood vibes its owner originally wanted: a brief selection of wraps, salads, fried chicken drumsticks and tenders, roasted veggies, and other casual offerings for enjoying at the bar or for takeout, along with staples, beers, and wines available at the adjoining convenience store." - Serena Maria Daniels

"Opened in October 2021 inside the former Craft Work space in the West Village, this hybrid bottle shop/restaurant began as co-owner Rick Stanza’s vision for a high-end shop selling rare wines, beers and spirits with an adjoining bar and restaurant where patrons could sample purchases. The initial kitchen, led by chef Brendon Edwards, served a seasonal, vegetable-centric Cal‑Mex menu that skewed toward fine dining; Edwards departed amicably in June. Since then Stanza and partner and alcohol buyer Ashley Price have retooled the concept to be more of a neighborhood spot aimed at serving local residents and families rather than drawing outsiders as a destination, with plans to unveil changes at a public relaunch from 5–10 p.m. on November 23. The new approach emphasizes casual fare — burgers, chicken wings and various grab-and-go marketplace items — overseen by a back-of-house veteran most recently at Selden Standard who is testing and streamlining dishes to provide a consistent dine-in or to-go experience, while the interior is being brightened, high-top tables restored and an under-used area outfitted with video games." - Serena Maria Daniels
