The Best Chilaquiles In LA

"People come to Mi Ranchito Veracruz for the banana leaf tamales but stay for the chilaquiles (and the tamales too because they're actually delicious.) This North Hollywood restaurant knows a thing or two about serving up chilaquiles in a variety of ways. The standard base is totopos cooked in a smoky salsa roja, bright salsa verde, or a sweet and savory mole negro topped with a fair share of queso fresco, crema, and cilantro. From there, the sky's the limit with your choice of cochinita pibil, carne asada, and eggs either fried or scrambled. We're big fans of the warm salsa roja and asada combo that balances out their respective heat and salt in one very satisfying bite. " - sylvio martins

The 16 Best Restaurants In North Hollywood

"When you hit the stretch of North Hollywood that’s basically just semi-trucks and loading docks, it means you’re close to Mi Ranchito Veracruz. This tiny order-at-the-counter Mexican restaurant has an excellent menu stacked with burritos and chilaquiles, but everybody’s really here for the tamales. They’re served Veracruz-style (wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn husks), are perfectly cooked, and slightly sweet. Sprinkling the spicy red table salsa on top is also a must. This restaurant doubles as a ghost kitchen for other establishments advertised on Uber eats. I ordered from a restaurant called Egg Head Breakfast Burritos this morning which has the same exact address as this restaurant. I was unable to leave a review for Egg Head Breakfast Burritos because of course they don’t exist. So I will be leaving a review for this restaurant that is doubling as a breakfast burrito delivery spot on Uber eats. I ordered “The One Breakfast Burrito” which costs over $21. When the order arrived to my home, I thought that it must’ve been the wrong order because the burritos are so small!! A can of Celsius energy drink is bigger than the size of the burrito! This should’ve been priced at $10 not over $21. The taste was 3/5, did not look anything like the photos advertised on Uber Eats. I will never be ordering from this establishment again. The value is 0/5. I was able to eat two of these burritos and I’m still hungry. See photos I took of this pitiful meal. HARD PASS.

The green sauce enchiladas are amazing!! Very flavorful. I also really enjoyed the black beans and rice, so delicious. The potato taquitos were just okay; I wish the potatoes were seasoned. Definitely will come back to taste the rest of the very expansive menu!

Google
First time trying this place. Lots of very tasty items. Starting with the chips and guacamole. The guac and the salsa Verde were really good. We tried the a la cart fish and shrimp tacos. Also good, the fish was really fresh! Not sure I liked the chipotle sauce, but still enjoyed the tacos. The chicken enchiladas with Salsa Verde was great! My wife had the Chile relleno. It was just okay as the cheese wasn't melted inside and it seemed a bit greasy. Lastly, the flan was good, but not great. Overall there is a lot to like here. This would have been a five star review if the consistency was a bit better.

Google
I should have read the last post prior to coming by. Disappointed for sure. My Dad and I were in the area and were looking for Mexican food. We should’ve turned back once we got in. The hospitality was dismal. No expression or energy. Not one word said until we asked about the menu. Not even the easiest thing, playing Mexican music for ambience. Once we ordered we were shocked $41 for two burritos. That’s the second red flag. Chipotle would have been under and been better. The food was not worth that. My Dad’s burrito had meat crumbs really and you could’ve whipped up my veggie burrito at your house. My Dad said his wet burrito tasted like canned sauce. All in all I wanted to support a small business and in the end felt duped. On the wall they have a newspaper clipping, but it’s from 2020. Whatever this is, it’s not something to write home about! Oh and if you need the restroom, use it at home or bring someone with you to guard the door. The only restroom there has a door that won’t shut.

Yum! Unassuming spot. SO good 🤤 We had the pulled pork plate and beef skirt steak. Came with warm corn tortillas. So good. Need to come back to try their famous “making it the hard way” and “no lard” tamales next time. Definite recommend. Small parking lot and street parking available. Takes credit cards.

Google
I cannot recommend this place highly enough. This is not your typical Mexican restaurant. The dishes are from southern Mexico and very different from what you might expect. The tamales are their specialty and for good reason. Wrapped in banana leaf, as southern Mexico does it, they are moist and flavorsome. The masa was absolutely superb and smooth. In talking with the owner/chef, we met a man passionate about his food and determined to get it right before it goes on the menu. This place will be known, I have no doubt.

Google
Wow, this place is simply amazing! I want to come back and try everything on the menu! 😄To start, the service was awesome! I had the shrimp tacos and churros. Hands down the best shrimp tacos I've ever had. I live over 40 miles away but would totally make the drive back to eat here again!👍🏼😊

Google
A must! The only bad thing about this restuarant is that it's too far from my home. I love dark mole, here is the best mole I've ever tasted! My hubby had the birria and it too was amazing, as the platanitos and tamales. This is AUTHENTIC MEXICAN food. If anyone gave this place a bad review, they don't know or like authentic food.
google avatar

Elie E.

Yelp
All the bad reviews don't understand what good Mexican food is. I had the birria tacos and wet supreme burrito (carnitas), probably one of the best meals Ive had all year. Every bit was flavorful, tender, and I didn't want to end. I was on a Saturday at 6pm and there was noone in there. Go and try this place!!! What a gem!

Yelp
I ordered one of the favorite dishes, the green enchiladas which was completely disgusting, the chilaquiles had an aftertaste like that of spoiled food, they were extremely soggy, although I can't say if it's the way they came, I requested delivery. I was missing an item, I was told they didn't have it on their order, I'm expecting my refund from Yelp for that.
google avatar

Yelp
Mi Ranchito Veracruz has quite an extensive menu. I ordered a breakfast burrito with cochinita pibil meat and a cafe de olla. I also checked in with Yelp to redeem a free churro. I thought it was all okay. The tortilla chips felt a little stale and the breakfast burrito was not anything too special. A little dry. The churro also was not the best. The cafe de olla was yummy though. I would go back and try different things based on other reviews. Easy parking lot in the back. Relatively small with few tables. Limited staff.

Yelp
Pozole so so ... pork was little tough and caldo was bland and just little spice Service was good and I wish the pozole was good but nope Ambience is super hole in the wall and needs some up keep . If the place looks like how it does it should have really good food but it don't
google avatar

Stuart W.

Yelp
After tonight's meal, I can't rave about this place enough. I had to try their mole chicken tamale, which was wonderful and my main entrée was their shrimp burrito with their orange and green salsa which really escalated such amazing flavors! I can't wait to return and try the rest of their menu, perfection!
google avatar

Selene M.

Yelp
A unique hole in the wall type of place.... Hit the spot on my top places for chilaquiles and cafe de olla.... Quick service! We will definitely return for some more.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
Very well cooked food. Nothing fancy. All the meats were cooked tender and juicy. The beans were awesome and the vegetables tasted freshly cooked. I ordered takeout. They prepared the food in 15 minutes. It was a good experience

Yelp
Updating my review to include the completely inappropriate and unprofessional response from the owner, Robert G., who claimed that "maybe I got COVID." Maybe you should take a good hard look at your business practices and food quality before attacking customers who provide honest reviews. I decided to order from Mi Ranchito Veracruz after seeing their BOGO free deals on UberEats and reading the good reviews on their Yelp. What no one will TACO bout is their dishonest representation and poor quality of their dishes, so here's my honest review: Birria tacos: a picture is worth 1000 words, and anyone can see that these tacos are CLEARLY not birria as advertised. What was worse was their 4 birria taco combo was $16 while the a la carte birria taco was $2 each. Not only do they upcharge their prices for their "BOGO Free specials" but they also send you the wrong meals and NOT what you ordered. Chicken burrito: this was genuinely one of the worst Mexican dishes I've ever tried. Chicken was full of fatty/inedible meat, and the meat, rice and beans (which were processed to a mush) were completely bland. Not sure if the chef caught Covid and couldn't taste the food, but would highly not recommend. Our UberEats bill came out to $90 before the 50% discount for 8 tacos and 2 burritos, and I am absolutely appalled by the audacity to charge those prices for such a dishonest, low quality and carelessly prepared meal. There are MANY much more deserving Mexican restaurants in LA and I would never recommend anyone coming to this one!
google avatar

Zianya F.

Yelp
Don't fall for their BOGO deals!! The food is bland and flavorless. The meat inside the tamales was tough, couldn't chew it. If you've ever had an expensive and disappointing meal before, this place is one of those. $7 per tamale, not worth the price. Black beans inside burritos tasted like canned beans. The rice had hard pieces. Customer service is not a strong suit here. There are so many better places to eat. Go ahead and save your money.

Yelp
Best breakfast/brunch food. Always hits the spot! Best Mole I've had in the valley thus far, very yummy
google avatar

Louis P.

Yelp
1/10 very bad, the food looked like it was dumped in the pissed filled kiddy pool at my local swim team. The employees treated me like Rudolph without a glowing nose. DO NOT GO HERE‼‼‼
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
I'm happy I found this gem. I went for dine in and the place is clean. I ordered a chicken mole tamale and it was really good, the mole is more sweet than spicy. I also ordered the green chilaquiles and the cheese they use queso fresco which is the authentic way to make them. I finished the whole plate. The service was ok, they didn't check up us after they gave us our food but we had everything, they gave us the salsas and enough napkins. I will definitely be coming back to try other mole platters and the other tamales.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Oh boy, talk about an authentic Mexican hidden gem. They got a big menu here with many of the traditional dishes. I tried the following items and they were all outstanding. - Breakfast burrito with chorizo - Carne asada - Taco sampler - Horchata Looking forward to coming back and trying other items.

Michael A.

Yelp
The mole smelled up my whole kitchen of some kind of days old burnt grease. It was absolutely terrible
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
This place is always hit or miss using DoorDash. I'm obsessed with the cochinita pibil plate and always order it every couple months but lately it's lacking in terms of portions and freshness.
google avatar

Ani A.

Yelp
Recently ordered a lot of tacos thinking it's going to be amazing like before and the meat taste was weird. I didn't like it at all. My son said the same thing the food had a weird taste to it. The food I ordered was asada tacos only.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
This restaurant is a Gem very unique and delicious. Visited with friends we all had a great experience along with great service friendly staff. Chef serving all made in house dishes specialties of Yucatán . I Had Conchinita pibil we had the empanadas must try , taco trio . I will visit again and you should too.

Mark B.

Yelp
The burritos here suck, order at your own risk the owner seems to this that the worlds smallest burrito is ok to serve lol

Jessica R.

Yelp
I really wish I didn't find not one but two cockroaches in my soup. I don't like leaving bad reviews but this is so unhygienic.
google avatar

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
Terrible food, terrible service! DO NOT EAT HERE! I ordered tacos de pastor and they served cold, taco meat that looks nothing like pork! Feeling worked I called the restaurant and was rudely greeted by the worker who wouldn't give me their name I explained how I wanted my money back for the product that isn't what was advertised on google The guy literally said "what do you want me to do about it" refusing to pay after I asked for said refund I told him it's bad business to treat your customers like this and they just laughed saying "ok" Disrespectful people, disgusting food, terrible ambiance Please do no shop at this fake excuse for authentic Mexican food

the W.

Yelp
So right off the bat the burrito was good, just wish I had a spicy salsa to pair it with. Good flavor and it wasn't oily so that's a place. I enjoyed it and the portion size was good, got me full. Service was fast and steady so I appreciate that also. Workers were nice and the inside had a good vibe also, small but comfortable.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Food ain't the same here anymore. I been coming here for over 6 years and this was the last time. The rice was old and dry and the asada is just chopped up cooked meat. Bring the old crew back. The vibes are even off inside.

Christopher C.

Yelp
Ordered online for pick up, my food was ready to go the moment I walked in and it tasted delicious. Would definitely eat here again
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
This place is BOMB! All their food and especially their cajeta filled churros! The service is always super friendly and I love that they are a mom and pop shop, also they play all the jams!

Angel I.

Yelp
Amazing Torta de Milanesa!! Great service. Agua de horchata is also really well done.
google avatar

Bridget A.

Yelp
Parking is on back but there is parking in front and next street over. Hidden Business. The chilaquiles were ok, the beans were yummy and made fresh, no bathroom available, staff is friendly. Minimal indoor seating.

Luani L.

Yelp
That food was Horrible We ordered tamale with mole was horrible tamale har to eat like the made las weeks ago. The nachos with carne asada taste old greasy . The Jamaica water taste spoiled , and the is expensive for that food .

Steven K.

Yelp
This place is great. Unbelievable tamales. Highly recommend. They have been in business for a while and it shows

Ana C.

Yelp
Unfortunately I Didn't like the food .. estaba seca :/ I was expecting this place to be good .

Yelp
We went on XMAS eve. The place was packed Good food. Home made pasta. Service was excellant. We need. Ambiance was nice as well.!!

Yelp
I have been coming to this place since it opened. Moved out of the area so I don't get to have it as much but man do I miss it. They have so many good dishes the enchiladas, posole, birria, tacos you know name it. The dessert is delicious too! It's a cozy place if you want to eat there otherwise taking it to go food is just as good. Service is friendly, highly recommend
google avatar

Jose D.

Yelp
Service is good guy at counter was very friendly. Spot is super chill, parking in the back. Food is where they struck out for me. Granted I love hole in the wall places so I'll be back. This particular occasion I walked in while someone was calling in a phone order, heard breakfast burrito and I took it as a sign to get one too. Although I was craving a torta. I also asked what's popular here as it was my first time and was told to try the tamales. Banana leave tamales are usually a hard pass for me but I figured why not. The burrito was saturated in oil. And I thought they would have hash browns but it was like mash potatoes.... The tamale(rajas con queso) was good. Different than what I'm used to but no complaint. I'll be back for that torta and hopefully a better updated review

Yelp
Recommended by my brother in law to come here whenever I come to SoCal. And guess what? I decided to drive 5 hours down here to see what the hype is about. Well not necessarily for this but you know it's part of the trip. After 6 hours of driving from the SF Bay Area we arrived in West Hollywood and checked into our hotel. Settled in and headed to the restaurant. So we drive another 20 minutes to North Hollywood and arrived to a empty restaurant so that was a plus as we sat inside and dined comfortably. Located in what seemed to be a industrial area of north Hollywood and seems like very minimal foot traffic which is why there wasn't much patrons. Seems like the hype is their tamales which is wrapped in banana leaves instead of the traditional corn husks. These tamales are really portioned generously and for the price is so worth it. I end up ordering two tamales, taco platter and some potato taquitos. Two orders of horchatas and side of chips and guacamole. If you're in Hollywood, this place is a must if you love tamales.

Hazel H.

Yelp
This place has the best pozole ever. The tamales are incredibly rich. Everything is made with love, they don't miss! I got the pork quesadilla last time and it was just perfect. The salsas are all delicious. This place deserves a Michelin star for their integrity to food. A+ all around. Bonus: they always have yummy aguas frescas as well
google avatar

Doris R.

Yelp
I usually get the Pozole rojo de pollo which is always delicious. Huge portion along with the side of cabbage , onion etc. that is provided is awesome. All the fixings bring this meal together overalll
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
The most amazing chille relleno in the valley. Everything else is equally delicious. Cute little spot. They know what they're doing.

Evelin G.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! They have Great food! Love this place. They have the best tamales out there.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
A cute Mexican restaurant in the area :) Pretty good prices overall! Tried their salsa verde tamale, which was pretty good, though the chicken was a little dry. Fish tacos weren't bad either; the fish seemed pretty fresh! But the crowd pleaser was definitely their churros, which is filled with this caramel-like syrup called cajeta. Should definitely give it a try! Decent amount of parking in the lot its in.
google avatar

Navita P.

Yelp
I've been to Mi Ranchito Veracruz several times but now getting around to writing a review. Tasty burritos, excellent tacos and tamales, the best churros. Overall very good food and excellent customer service. They take a lot of pride in what they serve. Big parking lot on the side street entrance.
google avatar

Rick J.

Yelp
Not sure what happened since I initially came here in 2018. The Veracruz tamales were amazingly good back then. I was in the area recently and figured I would stop in and get some tamales. I was terribly disappointed. They must have new owners or maybe the person making the tamales quit, passed away or something. The tamales were horrible. In fact, they were so bad I threw them in the trash.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Alright, so. The pork tamale was good. The closest to my grandma's I've ever tasted. Always annoyed at the excess masa but it's to be expected. Here's where I'm at though with the service. My wife went there with my daughter today, ordered the mole, pork, and cheese varieties. Waited 30 minutes. Then was told that they do the phone orders in the same line as in-house, therefore the 3 pollo mole tamales she already purchased were now sold out. ***Let me repeat, the tamales she waited 30 minutes for, in-house, were now gone to a phone order*** And I found it quite arrogant that they asked what they could get her instead, and when she requested a refund, they seemed baffled. You gotta take care of your in-house restaurant customers first. You must take proper inventory, these mishaps can easily by avoided. I'll stick to my grandma's tamales.
google avatar

Amaro G.

Yelp
there are 2 good signs that come out of a restaurant in this day and age 1) if the food is serves fresh presented amazingly in person. Great service and ambience too by the way! 2) as well as when you order it through a high risk such as Uber Eats app. Well done
google avatar

Tanya N.

Yelp
The food is so good. I have tried so far the green chilaquiles, carne asada torta, pozole, chicken tamale, churro and flan. It's my go to for chilaquiles, you can't go wrong and the food portion is great for the price you pay. Good customer service and love that they offer delivery via Yelp. They also read it he special instructions, highly recommend!
google avatar

Marine N.

Yelp
Yummy food and friendly atmosphere . Try it and you ll like it. And. They are very fast don't have to wait to long for your food
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
I can in and grabbed the birria plate! It was amazing! The service was also really good. Everyone was very nice and attentive. I think my only think would be that I wished they had hand made tortillas. Haha. I'm used to them. But it's not a deal breaker
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
Promotion on yelp NOT valid per staff hasn't been for a while and no pinto beans even though it's a Mexican restaurant then refused to take them back when mentioned. Wouldn't go back.

Camilla S.

Yelp
We picked up breakfast burritos and enjoyed them very much! A great find and love supporting a family restaurant.

Rooroo E.

Yelp
Love it a lot delicious and very tasty also I love how the chicken clean you can tell easily I recommend it totally!

Yelp
What a surprise little gem of a place! My family and I were looking for tacos on New Year's Day but everything was closed except for this place. OMG THE FOOD IS SO GOOD! We got carne asada tacos, carnitas wet burrito, asada quesadilla, and a carne asada plate. My family loved the food. The asada was juicy and well seasoned. The Al pastor was also delicious but the carnitas were dry. They serve black beans which are good but different from our usual pinto beans. All of the food on the menu looks delicious and reflects the Veracruz region of Mexico with traditional old world tastes. I look forward to trying the chicken tamales with mole!
