The 14 Best Tex-Mex Restaurants In Houston

"This newer Tex-Mex restaurant serves a combination of classics and more inventive dishes. While the queso is an easy place to start, the duck carnitas in a poblano mole and coconut shrimp ceviche are bound to be some of the most memorable parts of a meal here. Diners also can’t go wrong with the street-style tacos al pastor or the beef adobo enchiladas, which are stuffed with slow-roasted, seasoned chuck. Spice up the experience with a Kick It Rita, a combo of tequila, Grand Marnier, jalapeno, and lime." - Brittany Britto Garley

The margaritas are excellent. The food is outstanding. The salsas are so fresh. The chef is doing really amazing things with the flavors of his food creations. This is not your typical Tex-Mex. If you haven't tried this restaurant yet you must! So happy to have this new culinary delight.

Awesome place to come get some Mexican/South American food (cooked by a super nice guy). The pastor had great flavor and was tender. The lunch special was a reasonable option that my wife loved. The salsas, hot sauces and guacamole were all awesome as well! Come check this place out. Steak nights on Thursday apparently- I’ll try that next!

This place is unassuming outside, but very nice inside! The atmosphere is clean, colorful, and open. The service started excellent and ended even better where the waitress pre-split our checks. She was very attentive to our needs without us even having to express them. Last but not least - the food! The food was amazing. The guacamole and queso had great flavor. All of the entrees were delicious and fresh. The sauces tasted homemade, fresh, and flavorful. Everyone was extremely happy with the flavor :) Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes!!

From the outside looks like another taqueria Located in a strip Centre in Oak Forest . Inside a different story tasteful minimalist styling.,Craft cocktails , an integrative and interesting menu. The service is impressive the food delicious. I noticed no vegan options. I asked the server. The chef came over gave several directions I chose enchiladas., that were flavorful and among the best I have ever . My partner opted for a chicken burrito that she enjoyed very much. My cocktails were superb all at a reasonably priced I will be back.

This was my first time eating here. I wanted to check it out. Let me start by saying how welcomed I was as soon as I walked into the restaurant. Our server, Jayden, was super friendly and greeted us right away. I ordered the froze watermelon margarita which was sooo good cuz they used fresh watermelons to flavor it. For starters, i ordered the carnitas en mole which was phenomenal!!! I never had anything like it before. I ordered the beef fajitas which i wanted medium rare to rare and the chef made it so perfect just like how i asked for it. My bf ordered the beef fajitas enchiladas which was really good as well. Every bite was so delicious!!! Ohh yeah! The salsa with chips was good! It was fresh and served warm. Chef Martin also came out to greet us and we got to talk for awhile. Super nice and friendly as well! Overall, we both had a great experience here! Will def recommend this restaurant to our family and friends to come eat at this place for sure!!! ❤️

My fiancé and I went to Mi Tierra a couple of weeks ago and we had a fantastic experience! The space is very well-decorated, clean, and had a nice ambiance. And there was plenty of parking. The service was impeccable - our server was very attentive and friendly and we had a nice chat with the owners (chef and bartender). I ordered the El Corazon cocktail and the presentation and taste were fantastic; I cannot speak highly enough about it!!! The complimentary red and green salsas were delicious and we also ordered a queso which was the best queso I’ve had in a long time. For my entree, I had the Mi Tierra Deluxe and it was wonderful. Very flavorful, huge portions, and high quality fresh ingredients. Will definitely be coming back to Mi Tierra soon. Can’t wait to come back for more and to try their oysters happy hour deal!!

Google
New favorite neighborhood lunch/dinner place. The food is always so fresh. The chef comes out and says hello. He has great culinary vision. Salsa is so fresh and is made with real ingredients. There is something exceptionally delicious about each dish we’ve tried.

Yelp
I appreciate their renovations and effort. Give it a try for yourself! I had the beef fajitas. Plenty of seating and beautifully decorated.

Yelp
2.9 - Beans, charro 2.0 - Beans, refried. No flavor. 2.7 - Brisket. Dry. 2.7 - Fajita, beef 3.0 - Queso 3.2 - Ribs 2.5 - rice. Bland. 3.0 - tortilla chips Double check to go orders, they forgot to pack our sides.

Yelp
Super impressed by this place. Format of the seating could use some upgrading and made more comfortable, I.e. no booths, just chair backs so we just sat at the bar. Now that I got that out of the way, this restaurant was incredible. The salsa is a nice blend of authentic serrano based, spicy green sauce but then made extra creamy so that the unacclimated to the spicy life like my wife could enjoy it. Loved the queso and guac! My wife said the al pastor tacos were the best she's ever had and when she says such claims like that I tend to take her seriously. I got the ribs plate and was super happy with it. Very tender and with a nice glaze. This place will definitely be getting more of my business in the future!

Yelp
Ok so let me tell you this is one of those places that's either known or a well kept secret but I'm about to put you up on game, if you ever want some Mexican food that hits the spot this is the places to go... omg had the pork belly tacos and they will Knock your socks off, the place is really nice, looks older in the outside but the inside is nice and clean and up kept, the service was good no issues there.... But back to the food the green salsa was a crème style jalapeño salsa and it was freaking delicious ... if you follow me this is a place you have to try, not many places make me say whoa when I try the food, this place did just that......

Yelp
The best restaurant to come to this area. There are a ton of restaurants in the goof area that specialize in distributing cisco goods, but not many that experiments like real chefs. As someone that grew up in that twilight zone of fastfood and home meals, this place shakes all that up and offers a brilliant new path. It answer a questions of what years of experience with curiosity can add dazzle resulting in a modern culinary affair. Your not cheating on your favorites, but maybe they deserve to be served papers years ago. If you want to try exciting foods, and enjoy a well deserved break from that hectic worklife, this is your daily getaway.

Yelp
Our second time to dine here at Mi Tierra and it's been exceptional both times. Didn't think to take pics of our food. My husband had the octopus tostadas and I had the chile relleno (w/chicken), loved both dishes. This place is a hidden gem on this otherwise unsightly corner of Mangum & 34th St. The food reminds me more of what you'd get in Mexico City than standard Tex-Mex. Five stars!

Yelp
WOW! All I can say is WOW! I had the opportunity to eat here with Eric Sandler of Houston Culture Map. IYKYK. This was his recommendation. I showed up first in the group and I had to text everyone and ask if I was at the right spot. The area is shady, but up and coming. Burglar bars lined the strip mall and the restaurant as well. Eric assured me that I was at the correct spot. When you walk in, it's like you are in a whole different experience than the outside. Extremely polished inside. The chairs and tables are really cute and they also have a bar area. Clean, mega clean! We ordered the ceviche (so amazing), the mushroom queso flameado (another WIN). And I ordered the cheese enchiladas. The rice, beans, enchiladas, everything was on point! Not to mention the service. I know they weren't going the extra mile because we were with Eric, in fact I don't even think the server knew who Eric was. Later on the owners came to the table to make sure all was okay, and of course it was. DO NOT pass up this spot. Don't judge the area like I did, just go in and enjoy! Trust me!

Yelp
We decided on a whim to try Mi Tierra on a Tuesday night. We were the only people in the restaurant, which was cool - we got seated immediately. Service was super friendly. The restaurant was very very clean. The food was the sticking point for me. The queso was really watery, tough to get from the bowl to the mouth without dribbling everywhere. The salsa that came with it, however, was a fantastic dark smoked salsa that I would have bought and brought home. I got the cheese enchiladas with refried black beans. While the pico de gallo was fresh and the guac was solid, the beans were underseasoned and the enchiladas felt like cheese rollups baked in tomato sauce. They could have used a TON more seasoning. One more upside - the drinks were pretty good. The Mexican martini was balanced, and the house margarita had plenty of citrus.

Yelp
Very authentic Mexican fare at a very reasonable price. Drinks were fresh and tasty. Service was quick and very accommodating. Ambiance is "Classic Old Pizza Hit" building with bars on windows, but it's Houston after all. I'd return!

Yelp
We had dinner here last night and it was fantastic! We wanted to grab dinner closer to home, so I'm glad Mi Tierra popped up on yelp. Hubby ordered the house margarita to start. We got the ceviche mixto and the queso to start. The white queso was delish, I couldn't stop eating it! It paired well with the salsa that was served. The ceviche had lots of seafood and was really good! Highly recommend. For our entrees, we got the carne asada enchiladas and the mole chicken. Hubby really enjoyed his enchiladas. The meat was so tender and flavorful. He was raving about the rice. It's usually an afterthought for him, but he ate every single kernel. I'm a sucker for mole, so that's what prompted us to go in the first place. The mole was soooo good. I used my corn tortillas to soak up as much as I could! The flavor was spot on. They're currently still in their soft opening, but the restaurant was spacious and the service was really good. I'm looking forward to being back soon since it will be a staple in the neighborhood. Come check them out and show them some love y'all!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. A cute interior and really cool menu (not standard Tex Mex), great drinks, amazing food, and attentive service.

Yelp
A standalone anchored building in an area of transition. You wouldn't know you were entering into a nice restaurant. It is decorated nice and clean. Orange with pops of color and brushed (?) brass lighting throughout. Not overly decorated, just enough for your eyes. You are warmly greeted and seated quickly. Waitstaff is very friendly and knowledgeable. What we ordered: Queso is smooth and cheesy, nice flavor. Salsa comes out hot, dark, flavorful. Smoky with a hint of tanginess. Not spicy. (I could have used a little heat, but that's just me). It's not over spiced. Chili rellenos is very good. Chef made it with just cheese, my preference. The rice has little to be desired. No flavor, just a little coloring. It is perfectly cooked. The other side I got was the crispy potatoes with chorizo. Not what I was expecting. (WH72's was my thinking). It's good. Just know the chorizo is ground with bell peppers & onions and diced potatoes. For me, add eggs and a tortilla and you have a breakfast taco. (We took the leftover of this and it's exactly what the kids had for breakfast next day). The refried beans are black beans (they are thick and heavy). So if you have kids that prefer pinto, find an alternate. Thankfully, most of my crew likes black refried beans, so it worked out. Ha! Chicken fajitas cooked just right. Juicy and seasoned well. Charro beans to us, were a little under seasoned, however, the beans are cooked and they did have good flavor. The boys who ordered the ribeye (on steak night) didn't leave any behind. The ribeyes were tender, nice cut & great flavor. Beef fajita enchiladas were tender and flavorful. A mixture of cubed and shredded beef. We certainly plan to go back and try other items on the menu. My next choice will be the fried whole fish. I can't wait! Martin, you and your staff are doing great; it was good to meet you.

Yelp
Wow! This is my new favorite place! The food is amazing! Great margaritas and the service was fantastic! Everything we ordered was delicious!!!!

Yelp
I tried Mi Tierra with friends for lunch, and we thought it was good, though not our favorite Mexican food. The restaurant is cute, and the service is nice. Most of the food we tried was a little meh, except I thought the el pastor tacos were pretty good, and the salsa that came with the chips was very fresh. I also tried a frozen margarita--it was super, super sweet, and I only got to drink about half of it because it was SO frozen. My friend said the enchiladas were just OK.

Yelp
It was highly recommended by others on a FB group I follow. I must say, we were so disappointed. First, the frozen margaritas were small and not very good. The restaurant was not that busy, but they really struggled to get our food out in a timely manner. In fact, my husband and I finished our dinner before my son got his chicken stripes. They apologized, apparently they had burnt the first batch. Unfortunately, I think they burnt the second batch too. The servers were very nice. I thought maybe they were suffering from being newly open. However, I found out they have been here for over a year. We like supporting small family owned businesses. I hope this was just an off night for them.

Yelp
Definitely an out of the ordinary Mexican food experience, and I mean that in a very good way. Mi Tierra is high order fusion, with an Asian influence on standard Tex-Mex and Mexican fare. Birria tacos are on point, and the house guac is fresh and balanced. The look of the place is unassuming (it's in an old Pizza Hut), but the interior has been transformed into a sleek and open space. I enjoyed Mi Tierra, and I look forward to my next visit.

Yelp
So we decided to try the new Mi Tierra kitchen that is over by our house in our neighborhood in Oak Forest. It's really cute inside. They have it cleaned up really nice. They have a happy hour. I think that last until seven I'm not sure. LSo the food is more true Mexican. Not so much Tex-Mex. my husband had the El Rancho platter which had a beef chili, Relleno and a beef taco on it. The meat in the Relleno and the taco was more of a pulled beef not a ground beef. The flavor was really good. The beans they use are mainly black beans. He did get the pinto beans. I had the grilled fajita burrito. Chicken. It was a very good size. Lots of chicken in it. Had rice and onions, jalapeños, and some beans inside. It came with a side of beans and rice. I got the refried beans and it turned out. They were refried black beans. the rice didn't have a lot of flavor but when you mixed it with the beans. It was really good. The service was very good. The manager came over a couple of times and the waitstaff - Kate and Mary - stayed right on top of making sure that our tea was filled and making sure everything was good. So service was excellent. They have a lot of different kinds of food like octopus and duck. I think the prices might be a little expensive, but that's just me. All in all good experience. I may give them another try.

Yelp
Food was amazingly fresh. Went for lunch and received terrific service. The Pastor Tacos won Rodeo Best Bites for good reason. Looking forward to many more visits!

Yelp
Incredible service and food. I recommend their Calabaza squash/Mushroom enchiladas. And their salsa is divine!!! Please support this business!!

Melanie W.

Yelp
SO GOOD!! One of my most favorite places. The menu is on the smaller side so you know everything is going to be fresh and good! The staff is great! Better than a typical Mexican restaurant menu. If he can, the owner comes out to see how everything is. Ambiance is great.
google avatar

Judy G.

Yelp
The food is amazing, authentic & delicious! The service is great. The ambiance is good. The pastor taco plate is excellent, the pork is super tender & flavorful, the little homemade tortillas are so good. The chicken & beef fajitas are equally as delicious. The chicken chili relleno is my absolute favorite thing I have tried so far!!! It brings me back to my the time I had my first chili relleno at a little restaurant in Mexico. It's filled with chicken breast, cooked perfectly & topped with ranchero sauce. The drinks are also great. We tried a few of the speciality margaritas,

Hannah D.

Yelp
DONT GO HEAR! We got surved raw chicken, and the food was disgusting. The guacamole was made with very old avocados. The service was terrible and our waiter barely talked to us. The bathrooms were DISGUSTING

Sandy C.

Yelp
A hidden gem in an old Pizza Hut building. Martin is definitely a foodie with some serious talent. The dishes are clean, flavorful and thoughtfully executed. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. A big thumbs up!
google avatar

Kruti G.

Yelp
I didn't have reservations and there was no wait on a Friday evening. They give you complementary chips and salsa. They have plenty of vegetarian options and options for kids as well. The spinach enchiladas were delicious. The jalapeño spicy margarita was not the best. Server was funny and nice. They do have a happy hour and private room for parties! Will be back.
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
My first visit. The service was not polished. The atmosphere seems like a work in progress. But I'm giving 5 stars because the food was very good. I liked the freshness and seasoning of my mixed fajitas - not overly salty like some of those chain restaurants. I'm giving 5 stars because I want to encourage others to support this restaurant/small business. There aren't many good ones like this in the area. I will return.
google avatar

Arvind B.

Yelp
Excellent food. Very flavorful and fresh. Hope people find this place and support it as the location might not get the traffic it deserves.

Cali G.

Yelp
Wish I can give zero starts. Pozole verde was nasty and no flavor. Bad experience and on top of that, it gave me the runs.
google avatar

Walter M.

Yelp
Nice addition in the neighborhood for good food and cocktails, with some extra emphasis on their cocktails (full bar). Service is friendly. It is in a shopping center, so parking is never a problem.

Lisa D.

Yelp
Best shrimp tacos I've had in a long time. Owner says he's changing up the menu but promised I would still be able to order the grilled shrimp tacos. Don't judge this book by its cover: it's clean and bright inside with nice service!
google avatar

Katerina B.

Yelp
Food tasted fresh. Service was good. My only suggestion would be to include a little more spice to up the flavor profile of the Tortilla soup.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
Went to Mi Tierra after reading some mixed Houston Heights Foodies Reviews. Let me begin with the water glasses, not sure what is up with the Dixie cup sized water glasses; owners should consider at least 12 oz glasses. Ordered now the amazingly delicious food. Chips are yummy crispy and homemade. Best green salsa I've ever had in Houston. Most green salsas are tasteless and hot! Mi Tierras had a delicious smokey flavor that deserves basket after basket of chips. I had the cheese enchiladas and they were delicious. Beans were delicious and flavored with savory spices. Best of all enchiladas were not smothered with cheese sauce! My significant other had ceviche and wow! Unlike most ceviches in and around Houston, this ceviche had large chunks of seafood in a homemade red sauce (not a ketchup concoction). The service was impeccable and attentive. Never needed to ask for more chips (it was a 3 basket evening )
google avatar

Valerie Z.

Yelp
Mi Tierra is a new local Mexican restaurant in the area! The space is bright + clean, the food tastes traditional + homestyle, and the cocktails were delish! Service was prompt and staff was friendly! So glad I was able to stop by while in the area! Highly recommend! What we ordered: Chips & Salsa (Free) Ceviche Mixto ($16.99) Chicken Enchiladas ($12.99) El Ranchero Platter ($17.99) Cocktails ($13) El Corazon Traviesa

Lori G.

Yelp
Very welcoming. Bright decor. Friendly staff. Empty when we arrived for an early dinner. Filled up as we ate. Our food was fresh and very tasty. I had the chicken enchiladas which were very good. Tasted homemade as they should with great flavor. My husband loved his quesadillas. We'd go back if in the area again.
google avatar

Susan R.

Yelp
What an amazing place !!! Had some great drinks and food was just as amazing !!! Service was good Mary was nice and busy . Will definitely be coming back to try more drinks and food . Martin and Cathrine the great owners where super nice and took time to talk to us about their adventure in ownership of this new restaurant. Can't wait to see their success!!!

Matt M.

Yelp
I had the grilled octopus and it was the best octopus I've ever had. It was perfectly cooked, tender with an amazing flavor. My mom had the squash enchiladas. They were full of squash and mushrooms with just the right amount of cheese. The beans and rice tasted homemade. They had added an apple pie to the menu. The crust was homemade and melted in your mouth. The apples were sweet with a hint of cinnamon. I didn't get any pictures because I was too busy eating. I definitely recommend a visit.
google avatar

Caroline B.

Yelp
Cute new spot. Very friendly staff. Great tasting food. Highly recommend the tacos al pastor. Can't wait go back and try more.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
The restaurant is sparsely decorated but spotless, service was efficient and friendly. I ordered the chicken enchiladas - they are not covered in lots of sauce like many enchiladas I have had; that helped to better highlight the flavorful filling, so I didn't miss the sauce at all. The rice is fluffy and delicious, and the beans were undersalted for my taste (easily fixed!) but tasty. The dollop of guacamole on the side was chunky and very fresh. I love supporting locally-owned places, so I am excited to have this great addition to the neighborhood!

D G.

Yelp
The food was great - we had the bbq torta, it was Smokey and flavorful, the ceviche was spot on - the pork belly tostadas was finger licking good - and the old fashions were a great compliment to our dinner - Chef Martin is spot on with his selections and spices - compliments to him and his team - the food was so good that I had them catered an event for me and everyone truly loved the dishes / Ambiance is clean and fresh indoors - and the service was great as Chef Martin makes his rounds to talk to people - this place is a hidden gem
google avatar

Nicolle G.

Yelp
Delicious food with quality meat our server was nice and the environment is very clean will come back to try the ceviche
google avatar

Yelp
Great cocktails and margaritas. The queso flameado is awesome. We did chile relleno and taco plate. Yummmm
google avatar

Ericka S.

Yelp
Delicious food, Amazing service in a clean and modern atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back, the chicken enchiladas and the perfectly cooked Ribeye have us thinking about date night again!.

Judy S.

Yelp
First time there, for a late lunch Friday. Excellent menu and very helpful and enthusiastic waitperson. She gave us a variety of recommendations. I chose the chicken fajita bowl which was creatively presented and quite tasty. I will order it again after I've gone through the rest of the menu. Five stars!!!

Beth Ann C.

Yelp
#4 is ....taste delish with grilled onions and a grilled pepper. Pepper is spicy but so good. Added beans and rice. Their green salsa is tasty as well. The steak meat is very tender. I have been going here for years!

David N.

Yelp
Good food! Good service! Just look at the pictures of the food. Taste as good as it looks. The ceviche was amazing and the chicken chilaquiles.

T. G.

Yelp
Well, all 5 star reviews so we were anxious to eat here. Place is sparkling clean and server was very nice. Ordered guacamole for starters and it was pretty heavy on the lime and overly chunky for our taste so not real good. Chips were fairly stale but red salsa was good but I didn't like the green at all. Ordered cheese enchiladas and couldn't believe how awful they were. Gooshy, creamy type of cheese on the inside and tortillas barely had just a tiny bit of what I think was their red table salsa on it. I was really hungry but I had to force that down. Yuck. Beans were as thick as wallpaper paste and lacking in flavor that I left most of that behind. Only good thing was the rice. Woopee. Partner in crime had the beef Adobe enchiladas and he said they were not special and we agreed we don't care to go back again. The tea was really good tho. There was nothing I could really say that wouldn't sound rude when they asked us about the food so I just replied that it was good. It was just awful for us but it looks like others are really thrilled with it.

Lorrie S.

Yelp
Grilled chicken quesadillas were amply stuffed and yummy! Service was super good. She was knowledgeable about menu items. Waitress even shared the ingredients in the addictive fire roasted salsa. Chef came around to tables checking on guests. Do wish there were lunch specials for lite lunchers! The interior is bright and cheery, yet it does still smell like the old greasy restaurant that was there before. I will go again to support small business!

Chris V.

Yelp
I decided come by and try Mi Tierra as it is around the corner from my office in the up and coming Oak Forest neighborhood. When you first walk in you are greeted by very friendly staff. There were a few other tables enjoying their meals already, but was able to be sat with my party right away. We ordered the "award winning" tacos al pastor as well as the mahi mahi fish taco's. Both were great choices. Light and refreshing the perfect amount of taste. Paired with Mi Tierra margarita. The meal was satisfying. I wish I would have come in sooner. Can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.

Yelp
It's OH WOW GOOD.... And the service as well as atmosphere was top notch! Great food, great price, with an added flair I think you'll notice to boot!! Love it.
