I was excited to try out Michi Ramen during a trip to Austin, but, having recently visited Japan, I think my standards for ramen are just too high right now. It's not a bad ramen shop, but it didn't overwhelm me with amazingness.
The restaurant has a very casual/next-age vibe, with some interesting artwork, including wall murals outside and in the bathroom. It was pretty dimly lit at our table during the lunch hour, which I think is part of the vibe. Also there is a bar area with two TVs in case you wanted to catch a game while there.
The service was great; we arrived at opening time at 11 am and were seated quickly. All the service is done by your server on an electronic tablet; the order is made on a tablet, and after your meal the bill is paid via the tablet.
My friend got the okonomi fries for an appetizer! They were pretty yummy; they were basically waffle fries (like from Chickfila!) with bonito flakes, green onions, and a yummy savory/sweet sauce on it. Would recommend.
For the ramen, you choose your broth, most of which come with a choice of chasu, aka meat (diced lean pork, sliced pork belly, spicy ground pork, or diced chicken). You can also add various toppings for extra $ or extra noodles at the end if you need to top up your broth. It was very Japan in the style of ordering. The base prices were pretty comparable to that in Japan too! My husband got the Michi Ramen with pork belly for $9.95, which is the standard ramen. I tried some of his, and it was pretty tasty, with the right amount of salt and some umami. I got the Jungle Ramen with the spicy lemongrass broth for $10.95, with diced chicken. The side dish of lemon/jalapeños/cilantro was tiny, the broth sadly wasn't very deeply developed, and the noodles were a bit too firm for my liking. I wasn't unhappy with the ramen, but I didn't find myself wanting to eat more. :(
Even though I wasn't blown away by the ramen at Michi Ramen, I did enjoy my experience overall. Also, I have to give props to this restaurant for their community involvement; they give you free mochi ice cream when you donate packaged, non-perishable food items!
