Mike’s Drive-In - Review - Arbor Lodge - Portland, OR - The Infatuation

"A local institution for half a century, Mike’s truly comes alive during the summer. The burgers are perfectly fine, but the restaurant’s big warm-weather draw is the shakes—don’t sleep on the Oregon marionberry and strawberry—which are so thick that plastic straws are futile, and the soft serve swirled into cones, a 99-cent bargain during weekday Happy Hours. The newish Arbor Lodge location is a drive-in in name only, so order at the walk-up window and commandeer one of the bright red picnic tables that line the sidewalk. photo credit: Sarah Yeoman photo credit: Sarah Yeoman photo credit: Sarah Yeoman Pause Unmute" - Krista Garcia

Very friendly and good food. Kids always love the ice cream, and let's be honest, we do too as adults, lol. the biggest thing i wanted to recognize today was this employee who actually cares enough to clean the entire chair and all the nooks and crannies of the business. it seems to be a lost art, and having a clean environment to eat at is very refreshing. kudos to you for caring about us too. I will definitely return.

Google
Tried the North Portland location. It's just not the same. My burger and sundae were good, but just not as good. The burger itself was EXTREMELY salty. Like the cook lost the cap of the salt Shaker. My wife's burger fell apart because the bun was just too fluffy. The crew seemed very disinterested in taking our order, and one older lady in the back looked annoyed we came in. Not a typical Mike's welcome. Overall, I'll be sticking with the Milwaukee location. It was a Sunday. Not even busy and it took 25 minutes to get our order of two burgers and a sundae.

Google
I don't know why but fries even thought they're cooked and in the warmer take so long to be brought out. So often people who only order fries and cones end up finishing their cones before receiving their single order of fries. I know cause it's happened to us several times now. Please can you have your team send out single fry orders when the fries are sitting under the lamp. It's an easy way to strike out a ticket and have less people in the lobby who are just waiting for their fries to leave. I wrote this whole review and finished my cone and still haven't received the fries.

Google
I want to love Mike's but we've had some really questionable experiences. It's a great concept and the food is good but the management seems consistently poor. The interior lobby is always dirty, the customer service/friendliness of the team is very inconsistent and the staff are often loudly having very inappropriate conversations. It's also usually takes quite a bit of time to get your order and it's often incorrect when you do get it. I just wish they could tighten up the operations so it would be less of a gamble each time we visit.

Google
We were excited for a new burger spot in the neighborhood, especially with a drive thru. We've been 3 times over the last two months, tonight being the third time. The drive thru has taken between 37-55 minutes the three times we've been, and 47 minutes tonight. We sat at the window for 14 minutes with our milkshakes waiting for our food to come out-- we finished our shakes before the food had even come out. Once we got the food the burger was so overcooked it felt like gnawing on rubber mulch. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but it wasn't good. 3 strikes, I'm out.

Google
Really disappointed in the food, but service was okay and the restaurant was clean. I got a deluxe burger (apparently it didn't ring up as a cheeseburger and the cook who delivered our food to our table was pretty standoffish when I asked about it). The patty was in about three pieces and kept falling out of the bun, and the bun itself was really dry like it was going stale. The fries were crispy and obviously fresh which was nice. The tots were far from crispy though. The indoor seating section was spotless and is laid out such that it doesn't feel too cramped. Nicely decorated and well lit. The cashier was very kind and respectful, answered a couple questions, and took our order quickly. Overall disappointed, but will try again eventually.

Google
I hate to say that I was disappointed but that’s the reality. I knew in my heart of hearts that it was gonna take a minute to get my food, not 30+ minutes, Geezus!!!! The fastest thing they did was take an extra $0.50 for their dipping sauce that I dipped my barely Luke warm tator tots into. Asking for hot tots would probably cause a major impact to how they do things. If any one thing was good it was the Oreo milkshake. My 1-5 rating - Over all experience 3 of 5 Oreo Shake - 5 of 5 (this was the best thing) The Mike S Special burger was a - 3.5 of 5 Fries - 3 of 5 Tots - 1 of 5 Time to get food - 1 of 5 I’ve worked in restaurants and I’m a former production specialist and just watching their operation makes me wonder how they don’t see it themselves after reading reviews of the slowness. What I saw was people silohd in their stations chit chatting, not providing the best help to their neighboring station causing things to take longer. What really got me was seeing all the deep fried food sitting waiting for everything to finally catch up. It was so slow that if I called in an order while off I-5 in Ridgefield, WA (about 30-35 minutes away) it has a greater than 50% chance of not being done by the time I get there. It doesn’t take that long for fresh food. If they fixed their time to get orders out I guarantee their current overall 3.X rating will go into the 4s. If they get into the 4s it will increase businesses.

Yelp
Clean and new burger place. Staff is friendly and easy to talk to. Parking lot for guest is great to see. This is a section of Lombard being update with new restaurants and commercial properties. Mike' s is new and a Starbucks was going to up next door. Good revitalization for the area. Enjoyed the 1/4 lb cheeseburger deluxe with fries and a drink. Dipping sauces are an extra $.50. Meals are made fresh once the order is made. The staff will bring your meal to you indoors and outdoors. Burger was good and can see why they have been around for decades. Thank you Mike's.

Yelp
Make sure to factor in the price of a gallon of gas, because you're going to burn thru a lot while waiting for your food. For a place called "Drive-In" you'd think they'd have that part figured out, but 20 minutes is definitely the longest drive thru experience I've ever had. And for a Wednesday at 7:45, with only 5 cars ahead of me, that's ridiculous. Good (not great) burger, and the fruit in the shake wasn't blended enough to actually fit thru the straw, so I'm not sure how to even drink it.

Katrina B.

Yelp
I was so excited when Mike's came to North Portland. It has gone down hill fast. The drive thru is a joke. Instead of having the customer over to the Grill waiting area and helping the next person in line. You wait for ever. The prices keep going up and the amount of food gets smaller every time I go there. A ice cream cone were always 99 cent and it was huge. Now the price is $ 1.95 and you can get a bigger cone at McDonalds. I am very disappointed with Mike's and will never return.

Robert M.

Yelp
I have loved, loved, loved Mike's Drive-in for years. I've gone to the Oregon City and Milwaukie locations for years and was thrilled when Tigard opened up because it's near my office. When it opened, I went about three times a week, for months. I am a true Oregonian in that I am adamant about supporting local businesses rather than large corporations. Unfortunately, I will not be going back. The last few times I've been there, the food has been as bad as McDonald's in that the hamburgers were lukewarm, dry, and overcooked. The French fries were barely warm. Flavor is now non-existent. I was also chagrined to find out that they no longer serve the huge milkshakes. I went back a few days ago, hoping upon hope that maybe the food would be better, and it was wretched. The only reason I ate it was because my blood sugar was really low, and I had to get something into my stomach. I'm not sure what happened--are they getting too big for their britches? Who knows? Sometimes success results in lower quality. I'm finding that to be the case here. Eating out has become so expensive that finding a good quality place is becoming more and more difficult and I'm finding that I'm crossing more and more of my favorite restaurants off my list. Mike's is now done, too, I'm sorry to say.

Dianne M.

Yelp
Food was average. Milkshakes were thin despite having a conversation with the order taker to request for a thicker root beer milkshake. Order taker was pleasant engaging had great customer service. Again food was mediocre nothing spectacular to drive from Fairview to North Portland for a hamburger that in my view is kind of overpriced.

Brian M.

Yelp
Gave them a great tip, but food took 30 mins in the drive through and there were only 4 cars ahead of me!

Joel C.

Yelp
I've had bad fast food before, but I must reconsider my definition of the word terrible to rate this dump. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with Swiss at the Tigard store. I ordered my burger in a basket and I ordered it with light mayo only. I like to taste the meat not a bunch of veggies. For starters, the meat was what I can only think of as extra, extra well-done. I understand that hamburger needs to be cooked through, but does the outside need to be burned? Suffice that the meat was overly well-done, dry, and tasteless. Then there's that thing about light mayo only. The cooks here apparently don't understand that means no pickles, tomato, lettuce, or special sauce. The mayo was also not what you'd typically think of as light. The burger sucked. The mayo was applied so heavily that it soaked the bun. Definitely not recommended. Then there are the fries. A complete delight, if you like manufactured fries that are cooked in heavy grease. Fries also get a well-deserved not recommended. I upgraded my basket to include a shake, which was actually pretty good, but a little on the thin side. Shakes, I think, carry an individual price of $5.95. For that price, I expect a shake that you can't suck through a straw. The shake gets five stars for flavor, but only two for consistency. The dessert, in the basket, is a chocolate chip cookie. It's one of those inedible pieces of dough that plops out of a machine. And speaking of prices, this mess was $20.50, and it isn't fast either. I was there in mid-afternoon and my order took 15 to 20 minutes. Oh, and the place didn't give you the feeling it was clean. I'm all for supporting local businesses, but I won't be making the mistake of stopping at Mike's Drive-In in the future. All around, not a pleasant experience.

Nicole H.

Yelp
I had previously liked my visit to the Lombard location so decided to try Tigard. First, you have to order on a kiosk. Then you are in for a long wait. I only ordered an ice cream cone and hamburger. The cone came out first but I had to eat it there because the hamburger took so long. The cone was okay, but the burger was not edible. Not only was the inside completely pink, but there was just a tiny bit of lettuce, one small tomato slice, and an even smaller pickle. I initially thought there was only a patty and onion because everything was so skimpy. The hamburger cost $6.99 for something horribly made that I couldn't eat. The company then offered a gift card that they never sent.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Food is good but driverhru in Portland is increadibly slow. Way overpriced. Each order takes so long and they need to push employees to produce.

Yelp
The food is good (fried pickles and hard shake are really good). Service is a complete cluster though so be prepared to wait a loooong time including if in drive through. First time going we received burger and fries probably about 15 min after ordering then the shake came out another 15ish later. This was shortly after they opened so expected some issues. Last time I went got the shake about 10 min after ordering then checked after 30min of waiting to ask about the burger status and they mentioned it is just waiting on the pickles. Checked in again after another 10min as still waiting and asking if the burger had been sitting out for over a half hour waiting on the pickles. They offered and did then make a new burger for when the pickles and old burger came out another 5 or so min later. They have started closing the lobby early at 8 in which many people are not aware of as it was relatively constant with people coming in to be turned away until they locked the doors with people still trying to get in. Drive through line wait was estimated at 20-25min by staff when turning people away from the lobby however me and others on the lobby side had already been waiting over 30 min. Would be nice if they put spoons out or give you one with the hard shakes instead of needing to ask them.

Patrick H.

Yelp
We got two $6 orders of the side of chicken tenders and got a literally laughable amount of food. We didn't even call it a snack. I included the sauce ramekin for size context. What a joke. Tried to complain on their online form, it will not submit, of course.
google avatar

B M.

Yelp
This place could be great! Make sure you clearly review your order before pulling off from the speaker and double check your bag before driving off! Two side items we ordered (and paid for) were not in the bag but we didn't have time to turn around to go in or sit through the drive through (again) to get what was missing. Bummer! Three stars because: The drive through was convenient (does take time) The tater tots and shakes were delicious The burgers were good (what you'd expect for drive in burgers)
google avatar

Kira K.

Yelp
The ice cream was okay. We got the caramel toffee crunch but wasn't much crunch just a lil at the bottom. It was giving a icecream caramel swirl. The service was fine but it was a little ghetto. And the ambiance gave that old school diner that I like. Didn't get any food so I can't judge too much.

Daniel C.

Yelp
I ordered mustard for my corn dog, but that's too much to ask, apparently. I wanted onions on my burger, but they couldn't do that. The taste and quality of the food has really gone down hill. It's no longer the same as when I was a kid. I don't know why I even gave 2 stars.
google avatar

Suzanne P.

Yelp
Not a big fan the meat was pretty small, fries meh basic. They have great soft serve ice cream. The wait was 15-20 minutes in drive thru at 9:45pm

Charlie S.

Yelp
I've never in my life seen such a slow, disorganized, lazy kitchen in my life. If you're down to wait over a half hour for your fast food just to see a burger and chicken fries take you almost an hour to get then this is the place to eat
google avatar

deangelo w.

Yelp
This place has been getting killed on here by reviews about the service and food. Yet it's not the best it's not as bad as people on here whining about food came quick in about 3 mins woman at the register was super nice. We sat near the window and ate the burger buns were a bit soggy and the meat on the burger could of used a little bit more salt but that's about it nothing really to complain about here it's fast food people.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Great local burger spot with non-burger options. I really like their sides. I'm not really into French fries, but I love their fried mushrooms and fried pickles. They also made veggie burgers, which is often difficult to find in a drive thru.

Gayle R.

Yelp
Cashier girl didn't even say anything to me or look at me had a sad face. First time at this location didn't like too much of anything Everything was cold but the hamburger patty was somewhat warm , with the second hamburger with Walla Walla onions was no where being warm!!! Huckleberry Milkshake was good, We had a table # but the lady bringing it out saw us sitting at table by the curb so she turned around and went back to kitchen and put in paper bag which we wanted to eat there with tray, so then everything was Cold!!! Like the other side of river one.

Yelp
Mikes opened a few weeks ago. We were very disappointed in both the food and the service. If I take the time to come inside your establishment I should be served before those in the drive through. You ask how do I know, I stepped outside and watched the cars that placed orders after I did. They were long gone before my order showed up. The hamburgers were not as good as most fast food restaurants. The burgers were precooked and dry, and the buns were untoasted and gooey. And what's with the extra charge for fry sauce. If your going to charge extra then say it's going to cost an extra .45. It will be a cold day in hell when I drive past "Jim Dandy's" on Sandy to go to "Mikes". Way better service, and way better milkshakes, all for less money. Wouldn't recommend Mikes, and won't be driving the extra 4 miles!

Samuel G.

Yelp
Multiple missing items from order, still charged for them though. wonderful. Called the resteraunt and was given a "sorry" no explanation or way to fix the issue other than come back. nice.
google avatar

Natane S.

Yelp
I love this place. Great burgers, fries, ice cream and sodas. The staff are always so friendly too.
google avatar

mark g.

Yelp
Mike's is definitely a step up from the regular burger chains, but at a price. It is about double what you would pay at McDonalds. The burgers are very good. Especially liked the Bleu cheese burger. The fries are just ok. They have other options like fried mushrooms, but for a $3 surcharge. The wait time along with the price is about double from a regular burger chain wait. And of course they want you to tip, which isn't cool for a drive through experience. FIX THAT MIKE! Over all it's good not great. Meh.

Douglas B.

Yelp
The staff was very attentive and took very good care of us. It is a regular hamburger joint with easy to clean furniture. The ice cream is their best feature.
google avatar

Zauna J.

Yelp
Great service, great food, clean. Happy hour from 2:30-4:30 burger with complimentary tots or fries. Best soft serve and treats. It takes a little while but the quality is worth the wait.

Amber M.

Yelp
Service is very slow :( we waited in the drive through almost 20 minutes. I only ordered a shake and it was melted by the time I got it, a $6-16 oz shake that was basically strawberry milk. Maybe have cars with bigger orders pull into a parking spot to wait? I have been inside as well, and the wait was just as bad :(
google avatar

Ben D.

Yelp
Server seems a bit shy to be working the register. Ordered a float and it tasted like soda water. I was already in my way home before I realized. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
I mean, you can't have people waiting around and then serve them cold food (cheese congealed, etc). Even if the burger is pretty good (it is) it's just such a cardinal sin to serve people cold food when they're sitting right next to the kitchen. I really wish they could get their management in order, because their food is a crowd pleaser, especially for kids. I keep thinking the service will get better, but it still seems like no one is running things and half the staff seems to be waiting for things to happen while 2 people cook and prep.
google avatar

Erick R.

Yelp
I was coming home from work tonight and just craving a really good burger. The normal delivery options were just not appealing. But then...what is this on the list of burger places on Uber Eats...Mike's Drive-in! Somehow I missed they were opening the N.PDX location in my area. I was so excited as I love making pilgrimages down to their other locations. Well no question is was Mike's tonight. I've browsed a few of the 1-star reviews on here and it's insane. Sorry Yelp Hipster/Food Snob reviewers (to be honest I disregard Yelp and the reviews as some of the most idiotic people write reviews on here. I use to use and review on Yelp a lot back in the day. But then this trend started and it's been downhill ever since. Case in point, read a review of the Verboort Festival once on here. A 50+ year tradition of a town coming together to serve the most amazing sausage and sauerkraut - all made by them and served once a year to help fund their school. The review was complaining that they didn't make a turkey sausage option. It was just a true WOW moment. I digress...our delivery order tonight from Mike's was delicious. Burgers were great. Fries too. Classic drive-in food and all done right. Glad to them in the neighborhood...though I think I hear my diet screaming.
google avatar

Darrin D.

Yelp
I was nervous about Mike's Drive-In after reading some poor reviews...(many not even connected to the food). Anyway, what a wonderful surprise. The staff were friendly and helped me with our menu selection... such as plank fries vs onion rings.. (We got both and both were very good). I had a bacon cheese burger: competent, quick, and met my craving for a burger. The hubby had the blue cheese/bacon burger and it was described as "very good." The accompanying coleslaw was flavorful. Good job! Sadly, the ice cream machine was down... but that gives us an excuse to go back in the near future. We went on a Friday at 12:30 pm. Service seemed speedy ...as the line moved quickly. Mike's made my Friday even better.
google avatar

Kari J.

Yelp
It's o.k. It's a burger, some pale and slightly cold tater tots, decent coleslaw, tasty milkshake at a higher than I would like to pay price for average food.

Terese F.

Yelp
Walked in on a Saturday and was immediately welcomed by a really friendly staff member. Ordered food and it came within 5 minutes. I got a cheeseburger and my boyfriend got the Special Deluxe. Both of our burgers were good and the French fries were good as well. The only thing I didn't like was that the coleslaw had way too much dressing for my taste. My meal was very reasonable for about $13 for a burger, fries, drink and side. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Went through the drive through and ordered a bacon cheeseburger basket and crispy chicken sandwich. Staff was super nice, and we waited about 10-15 minutes for the food to come out, although the drink came out immediately. The menu is diverse and looks like it had a lot of great options. However, the fries lacked seasoning (although they were fried perfectly), the bacon cheeseburger also lacked salt, and we paid extra for two extra sauces and unfortunately received none. Staff was very apologetic about the wait and truly seems like they are trying their best, but for the price I have a hard time recommending this place in its current state. Will try again in a few months and see if they've worked through their growing pains!
google avatar

Wen Q.

Yelp
The food is decent if and when you get it and be prepared to enjoy it as a coursed meal where the dessert might come out first, main dish sits out there for another 25 mins while they make your appetizers/sides. Note the lobby closes at 8 and drive through closes at 9. The drive through was taking 25-30 mins around 830pm on a Saturday night and the wait if you ordered inside was even longer. People who work there seem to be confused and don't know what they are doing despite being nice and trying their best. It's really a shame.
google avatar

Bruno B.

Yelp
I want to give Mike's the benefit of the doubt as a local business that is still getting its sea legs, but the overall experience was so poor I can't recommend it. We went inside because the drive-through wait was long, and there was only one person ahead of us in line. We ordered, and the whole basket vs order items separate was overcomplicated. We were told it could be a 25 min wait, and we made the mistake of agreeing. We were given 2 numbers by mistake, 69 and 73, and when they started calling numbers it was "173? 175?" so we were doubly confused. We waited 40 minutes, and finally I got up to check on things and unraveled the numbers. 5 min later our food finally arrived, and it was an incredibly average burger and fries. The fries were nearly cold, and there is no way that was a half pound burger. I was truly surprised at how basic the burger was, particularly for the price.

Rachel W.

Yelp
The service here was very subpar the African American lady who was working the window which I'm assuming was the manager! was very rude and gave us attitude the whole time and ultimately made us come inside for a drive through order. When I got inside it took them a while just to greet me and the white guy with the glasses seemed like he was high off his a** and moved the slowest I've ever seen the order was already on the counter I could see it and it took them about 7 minutes just to bag two food items (a burger and fries). Would not recommend unless you want to be given a hard time and have a long wait just to get your food not to mention the fries were burnt and cold.
google avatar

Jeff A.

Yelp
Went for milkshakes they were quite good. I got marionberry she got toffee or something. Good job!

Frank B.

Yelp
It's just ok... so expensive now and it's soggy fast food. Milk shakes are good but they always screw up our order.
google avatar

Jey R.

Yelp
Amazing! Idk why people all hate it! I ate the whole thing and I rarely ever finish my food! The shakes are amazing
google avatar

G G.

Yelp
Reading the former review makes me so frustrated. This is a GREAT place with super quality food and friendly faces that we need so much in Portsmouth. They just opened and are still training. If you don't have the patience for that Arby's is across the street and you probably would like that food better anyway. The menu is expansive and offers something for vegetarians as well as pescatarians. They will make your burger with or without bun which I appreciate and the sides are delicious. The use Tillamook cheese and keep it local with the dairy and that's to be commended. Yes the drive through can take a minute but you can also walk up to the curbside or go inside where the AC is pumping and your shake won't melt. I'm a huge fan of the toffee Carmel crunch sundae! Yummm! So next time you visit. Be kind. Patience and kindness never go out of style. It also goes perfectly with a big juicy cheeseburger and plank fries.
google avatar

Ellis B.

Yelp
They take too long to get your food to you I ended up waiting forever to get my order on a lunch break that's only 30 Min long and waiting for 22 minutes
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Fried mushrooms were off the hook. Absolutely delicious. Hamburger was also great ,properly proportioned great taste service was excellent.
google avatar

Oisin O.

Yelp
I'm not normally a terribly food-squeamish kind of person, but I found this bright blue unidentified foreign object in my burger, and it really put me off of finishing my meal.

Caryn M.

Yelp
The food was just okay; the cod was average, the tots tasty, the coleslaw was drowning in mayo or whatever makes it white and milky. The young woman at the window was pleasant but I think a drive through that takes 23 minutes is a bit much. This was my 2nd experience here. Was giving them the benefit of the doubt. I won't be back.
google avatar

Naomi W.

Yelp
I'm sitting waiting for my order, a cheese burger with sweet potato fries. I've been waiting after paying for almost 20 mins now. My number is on the table. What in the actual heck, it's not busy in here,....ah, here it comes! Jesus, that took forever. First bite? Pretty tasty. But we need it to be fast too my dudes.

Yelp
We made the trek to the newest Mike's location on Lombard a couple of weeks ago. We were really looking forward to the licorice ice cream, but they had run out by the time we got there for dinner. We would have been ok with the pumpkin, but that had also run out. We ordered out burgers, I was a little disappointed to see the menu had been trimmed. There were some hot sandwiches that made the 30 minute drive worth it, but they are gone. This location is new and fresh, the staff were very friendly, service was reasonably quick. The weather was lovely for eating outside, but we all thought that was a long drive for a hamburger.

Yelp
They were busy and the service was slow and they messed up our order--this wasn't the problem though, it was the manager being very rude to us for no reason. We were waiting for an order that was apparently sitting on the counter inside (we were seated outside). when we came in and asked about it, the manager totally blew up at us and lost her cool. very unprofessional. the rest of the staff was trying very hard though and I feel bad for them.

Yelp
Good food and so glad to have something like this in the neighborhood. But y'all gotta get your operations worked out. 40 minutes in the drive through line for only 7 cars on a Wednesday at 7pm sucks. Do still enjoy walking up for a soft serve.

Yelp
Love the food and a great a experience. I would recommend leaving the walk up window open if the drive through is Open. I walked through the drive through.
