The Best Tacos in San Diego, According to a Local Food Expert | Eater San Diego

"Slow-cooked, tender beef birria is the star standout at Mike’s Red Tacos, a restaurant founded by Mike Touma, San Diegan who had a passion for birria and started his business as a food truck in 2021. Touma has two locations now (Point Loma and Clairemont Mesa), where the birria combination plates are top sellers — each plate comes with two birria tacos (with or without cheese), consomé, cilantro, onion, and chips. The two other taco options are the keto taco with beef birria, cilantro, and onions in a hard cheese shell, and the veggie taco with sauteed portobello mushrooms, bell peppers, poblano peppers, beans, and potatoes, all dressed with guacamole, cilantro, and onions. The restaurant would be incomplete without its black-and-red color palette and busy crowds. Since there is limited seating, most diners prefer to take their orders back home and feast in private." - Roxana Becerril

25 Iconic Dishes That Define Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Wrapping galbi in a tortilla seems so obvious now, it’s easy to forget how earth-shattering the Kogi truck was when it debuted in 2008. More impressive, though, is that a decade and a half later, eating the famed short rib taco still tastes like hanging with an old friend. The sweet marinated meat carries a slight smokiness from the plancha, the punchy salsa roja is laced with sesame, and the scallion slaw adds a refreshing crunch that ties everything together." - garrett snyder, brant cox, cathy park, sylvio martins, jess basser sanders

Google
I’m from Utah and was looking for some good Mexican food and saw this place had great reviews. It lives up to the hype! Came here for the first time and had a great experience. Staff was so present and knowledgeable. I ordered the birria tacos without cheese, and a side of rice and beans. Price is reasonable and the atmosphere is clean and inviting. Highly reccomend for a quick and affordable bite to eat!! Enjoy

Google
If you want great tasting tacos with perfect tortilla chips. This is the place. Price is similar to the area as well. If you’re more like me and you know what Birria tacos taste like, this isn’t the choice for you. The flavor is good but the spice is completely lacking. They also charge for the consome so that alone feels very wrong. I wouldn’t come back myself but I would 100% recommend to my American friends looking for good flavor and a great atmosphere.

Google
The sides were elite — pickled red onions, fresh lime wedges, cilantro, and a clean presentation. But what really took it over the top was the taco itself. The crust had that perfect balance: crispy enough to give a satisfying crunch but still soft enough to bite clean through without everything exploding out the back. The birria was juicy as hell, maybe even a little too juicy — but in the best way. The salsa bar? Absolute game-changer. Next level flavor and variety, no weak links there. And honestly, mad respect for only offering one type of meat. That kind of focus usually means they’ve dialed it in, and they have. Every bite felt intentional. Top-tier taco experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mike’s Red Hot Tacos is the real deal! I stopped by on a recommendation and this place absolutely delivered. The tacos are packed with flavor, super fresh, and have the perfect kick without being overpowering. You can tell everything is made with care — from the tortillas to the salsas. The staff is friendly, fast, and makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. Prices are solid for the quality you get, and the portions definitely hit the spot. If you’re in San Diego and craving tacos, this is the spot. I’ll definitely be coming back! 🌮🔥

Google
Nope! Don’t do it! We were looking for tacos, El Gordo, but unfortunately, the parking situation there was difficult. We decided to drive over to Mike’s red tacos. Two tacos and a side of chips $14.99!. My friend and I decided to split an order of nachos and two tacos plate. It was $33! We did not order drinks, but of course there’s the option to leave a tip. The consóme was bland and tasted manufactured/from a can. The food was not horrible, but I expected better. Since I’ve never been here before, I went ahead and left a four dollar tip, thinking that they were gonna bring the food to our table and pick up our tray as well. This is not the case! We had to pick up our food after our number was called, serve our own salsa, and pick up our own tray. No, I don’t mind doing any of this, but of course food was mediocre at best. The service was blah.

Google
I went here last weekend with a couple friends for dinner and overall it was a pretty good experience. The place has a relaxed vibe and the staff greeted us right away. Our server checked on us a few times but didn’t rush us, which I appreciated. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and they came out hot and well portioned. The rice had nice flavor, maybe just a little salty but still good. Chips and salsa were fresh and kept refilled without us asking. Prices felt fair for the amount of food. I’d come back again when I’m craving mexican food.

Some of the best “chain” tacos you’ll find. The flavor is solid, portions are generous, and they hit the spot when you’re craving tacos without overthinking it. Service is quick and consistent, making it an easy go-to when you want something reliable and tasty. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area and craving casual tacos that punch above typical chain quality.

It's really hard for me to give five stars to any place. Not that I am very critical, I just think that you really got to be spot on to get five stars. Now I'm going to be brutally honest I have never had such a greasy taco that made me roll my eyes back in my head takinge to Taco Nirvana. Living here in San Diego I have definitely had my share of tacos. This isn't your typical Taco if you're used to a Taco Bell taco, well get ready for some mind-blowing culinary divineness. If you're looking for a street taco, these are not what you expect. The birria taco is kind of a niche these days and I think it's kind of like mole. In my experience you either have excellent mole or it's disgusting. I have had some pretty bad birria tacos that have almost turned me off from even trying any other place. However, Mike's has redeemed the birria taco. It is a little pricey for my wallet but I do appreciate that on Tuesdays you get a third Taco for free with the meal order. For me that's just perfect. Just be prepared though as I mentioned earlier, these are messy tacos. But kind of like a premium Philly cheese steak sandwich, if it's not messy, it's not good.

Yelp
Best Birra Tacos and Burritos EVER!! Will drive the extra mile to always get great food!

Yelp
Hark! To eat, or not to eat--that is hardly the question when one stands before the crimson altar of Mike's Red Tacos. Pray, allow me to recount this spicy chronicle for thy consideration. The Presentation Upon the platter sat the tacos, bathed in a consommé so rich and rubicund it would make Great Caesar's wounds blush in envy. The tortillas, dipped in the sacred oils of the birria, glowed like the setting sun. Truly, a sight more fair than a summer's day. The Texture & Taste The crunch! O, what celestial music it made against the palate! 'Twas as if the very heavens cracked open to reveal a center of tender, shredded kine, softened by hours of slow-fire alchemy. The cheese, melted with the passion of Romeo, bound the elements together in a sticky, savory embrace. The Consommé And then, the dipping! To plunge the taco into that deep, dark well of broth is to dive into the very soul of flavor. 'Tis a potion more potent than any brewed by the Weird Sisters--savory, salty, and seasoned with the spices of distant lands. One sip, and mine eyes did weep--not from sorrow, but from a heat that prickled the tongue like a thousand tiny Puck-ish arrows. The Verdict The line was long, stretching toward the horizon like a weary soliloquy, and the grease didst nearly ruin my finest ruff--but 'twas worth every farthing. "If music be the food of love, play on; but if birria be the food of Mike, then bring me another plate and be quick about it, knave!" In other words, the food is bussin.

Yelp
Mikes red tacos has the best quesabirria tacos in all of San Diego, in my opinion. I've tried a ton of spots, but the birria is more flavorful and tender here than anywhere else. They have the option for extra crispy which is perfect for me since I can't stand a soggy taco, and they pack on the cilantro and onion which are both fresh. This location is pretty small, with not a ton of seating which is the only reason it would be at 4 stars but I still really wanted to give it a 5! I order all the time, atleast once a month now. We've been able to find chairs outside and random places to sit if it's too packed, so it can be inconvenient with a baby in arm. I try to DoorDash it more now. I heard they opened a bigger location and are expanding which I love because they truly deserve it. Every cashier I've gotten has been kind. All in all, birria is amazing. My husband says the Crunchwrap stack is also amazing and gets that instead every time.

Yelp
This place was exactly what we were looking for when my family craved Birria tacos in SD!! We went to other places in Old Town and they didn't put cheese or give us consome in the Birria tacos. This place makes them with flavor, a lot of cheese, consome and plenty of toppings and sauces! The nachos are perfect if you aren't a taco person. The churros hit the spot and are good for sharing.

Yelp
Came here on a Taco Tuesday and was able to find parking just fine. Restaurant is very clean and the food prices were very fair. FYI, you get an extra taco for the Mike's Meal on Tuesdays. Food: Fantastic. Honestly had mild hopes for it since I thought it would just be like any other taco spot, but the Birria here was so nice and juicy and tasty. Ate all our food. Person at the register was also very helpful and patient.

Yelp
Finally tried it -- lives up to the hype. Got Mike's Meal + an extra taco + beans. The birria tacos were crispy, cheesy, and packed with tender beef, and the consomé is a must -- that dip takes every bite up a level. Salsa bar is legit too, with some solid options. Portions are generous, flavors hit, and it's one of those spots you already know you're coming back to. I skipped most of the chips and went all in on tacos + consomé -- no regrets.

Yelp
When I first found this place, I immediately thought the crunchstack was a Taco Bell crunchwrap dupe. It actually tastes better as it includes queso, guac, and beef birria. I could probably have done without the beans. You will notice almost every item includes beef birria, and I think it's nice for a business that lets you know exactly what their specialty is. I also got the churros which I thought were great at first, until my partner and I noticed a faint meaty aftertaste.. I assume this is because they keep their churros frozen in the same freezer as their meat. Love the unlimited salsa bar. This seems like a popular spot - the downside is that we came around 6pm on a Saturday and thus had to keep scouting for indoor seating as it was full. At least the staff was nice enough to wipe down the table we took over from someone else before our food was ready.

Yelp
Came on a Sunday evening around 5:30pm and it wasn't as crowded as reviews say. Got the Mike's Meal and Cali Burrito to try. Mike's meal was favorable and full of fillings (pickled onions, cilantro, lime, onions, birria soup etc) topped with the creamy jalapeño sauce. Perfection. However, the combo feels like a 12.99 meal because only two birria tacos. I think 14.99 would be the cost of everything with THREE tacos. Our thoughts lol. Cali Burrito was another fan favorite. We didn't feel full with two Mike's tacos so the burrito made everything worth. May be a bit too much fries inside, but we had leftover birria soup to drip into. Enjoyed this birria shop. Will come again.

Yelp
Tasty Birria tacos, we arrived with 3 customers in the restaurant and this place was pretty full by the time we left. Great staff, friendly, attentive and the restaurant is clean! Every seating area was awaiting a customer. No tables with drips or signs of prior customers. The place is artfully decorated. Colorful and loud enough to stand out! Check out the walls of the restrooms! Talk about bold!! Great concept, and so easy to keep clean. Onto the tacos! The Birria tacos are delicious. Full of tender meat, and not at all dry, the evil of shredded beef. The tortillas were strong enough to hold the Birria and as much of the fresh cilantro, red onion and radish you choose to fill your taco. I couldn't find anything wrong with this delicious taco! We both enjoyed it! The tortilla chips are also made in house and are really great. The crisp is perfect and they are seasoned perfectly. Be sure to visit the salsa bar. So many choices from mild to habanero hot. This is a favorite among the locals. Everyone enjoying their tacos and waiting patiently for freshly prepared food. Well worth the wait!

Yelp
A few people recommended I try Mike's Red Tacos while in San Diego so I made it a point to stop by. I arrived on a Thursday for lunch just before noon and the restaurant was already packed. I ordered Mike's Meal which includes two birria tacos with cheese served with house-made chips and consome. While waiting for my order, I patiently waited for a table to open up and fortunately I was able to snag a seat before my order was ready. Mike's Meal looked good upon first glance since the plastic container was full, though I quickly noticed a majority of the container was composed of the chips and consome; it would've been nice if the consome was not provided in the same container to leave room for more of the cilantro, onions, limes, radishes, pickled onions, or even chips. The tacos had a nice crunch to them and were not too overly oily. The chips tasted very fresh and I couldn't stop myself from eating the chips. Although the flavor of the consome was good, it seemed extremely watery and diluted down and was not like consome I was used to from other restaurants; when dipping the tacos into the consome it felt like I was soaking the tacos rather than scooping up the contents, if that makes sense. My experience at Mike's Red Tacos was just okay and it did not live up to the hype in my opinion. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing and should've gotten something other than Mike's Meal as my introduction to Mike's, but hopefully I'll be able to return to give them a second chance.

Yelp
It's been a minute that I have been here and wow, didn't realized they reno the place. My child loves to come here so I had to give it a try and boy, the birria hits. We ordered the loaded fries, birria ramen, and the combo (2 tacos and chips), and churros. I love that the toppings were laid out on the tray and they were very generous with the amount. The consomé was rich and flavorful. The churros were a little doughy and dense for me. I probably would skip it next time. I can see why my child loves coming here.

Yelp
Its been a couple of years since I was last at Mikes. I was in the area trying a local egg tart place and remembered Mikes was close by. My guest and I walked in and it was packed, no seats available and people waiting for their orders. Smelled very good inside. My guest and I went non traditional and ordered Birria Nachos and Crunchstack. The Crunchstack was delicious, kinda like a crunchy quesadilla. The nachos were huge and the cheese used was silky smooth and kinda like a béchamel. Loaded w birria. After a few minutes I realized Mikes interior was twice as big as the last time I was there. They took over a neighboring business space and opened it up. The dining area is probably twice the size and kitchen is in a different area. It looks great and makes eating inside easier! If in the area give Mikes a try. They offer very good birria in the Claremont area!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Mike's Red Tacos for a while and it did not disappoint! Our group ordered a variety of items so I got to sample a few different entrees. Standouts were the Mike's Meal ($13.99), which comes with two birria tacos + chips + consome and the Crunch Stack ($13.99). Both were flavorful and satisfying. The Cali Burrito ($14.99) and Breakfast Burrito ($14.99) were also solid - generous in size and filling. In addition, ordered the cheese quesadilla ($7.99) for a toddler and there were four huge pieces - definitely had lots of leftovers. There's a self-serve sauce bar with about six different options ranging in heat levels. I enjoyed the mild salsa and the jalapeño salsa. The restaurant is located on the corner of a plaza with plenty of parking.

Yelp
Overview: Great birria place, creative menu, delicious food, fast and friendly service ---- Crunchstack $13.99: - beef birria, beans, guacamole, queso, cilantro, onions, tostadas - the flavors were so yummy - it's like an elevated Crunchwrap supreme from Taco Bell - we ordered to-go so the tostadas weren't crunchy when we ate it but it was still so good - I'd recommend eating their food right when it's ready Cali Burrito $14.99: - beef birria, fries, rice, beans, guacamole, cilantro, onions, sour cream, cheese - it was good but I liked the Crunchstack a lot better - in general I'm not a big fan of Cali burritos, so take my words with a grain of salt - the food is really filling - there was just too many fries for my liking (if you compare the cross section pictures, there's a majority of fries compared to the other additions) ---- Notes: - food comes with pickled red onions, sliced radish, and limes which balances out the meal perfectly, the acid cuts thru the rich food nicely - there are 6 different salsas available, our favorite was the jalapeño salsa which was spicy but wasn't an unbearable level - shared parking in the plaza - inside seating available - the decor was pretty cool with graffiti art on the walls - service was nice, shout out Nelly for being patient and asked if we wanted our food cut in half - quick to get our food, it took only 8 minutes from ordering to the food being ready ---- Overall: I can't wait to be back, the price to portion to flavor ratios are worth making a trip for this food, must try if you come to San Diego

Yelp
We decided to try this place out when we were in the area. We tried the birria fries and the crunchstack. I really enjoyed the crunchstack!! It comes with a lot of filling and I like that it has generous portions of meat and the other fillings. The birria fries were also good and I'm glad the guac came with everything without it having to be an add on. There is also a salsa bar with a bunch of different options. I didn't think any of them were super spicy but they have a good variety. The food also came out very quickly and service was friendly. There is a parking lot outside. It's probably a better place to go with smaller groups because there were limited larger tables.
google avatar

Yelp
Super proud of Mike and his red tacos! Tried this out years ago when it was a food truck... now not only do they have a Clairemont and Point Loma location, but they've expanded the Clairemont one to a much bigger shop next door and are opening up in Mira Mesa! I frequent Mike's a few times a year and everything I've tried here has been amazing in my opinion and I've brought multiple different friends to try and they all agree. The Birria tacos with consommé are promising, I recommend that for sure. Recently tried the Birria quesadilla and it's pretty good as well. My partner always gets the burritos and loves it. The meat and consommé always hits the spot. They also have other birria items as well New shop has so much more tables and a restroom now! So much more space. Love it! Service is always nice, never an issue.

Jake F.

Yelp
Honestly, just ok; I had higher hopes from the reviews. The red taco was the best item we got, the California burrito was sadly, a huge miss. The burrito was somehow dry and soggy at the same time. The burrito was 60% French fries, there was almost no guac, onion or sour cream; the meat, rice and fries all have the same texture and flavor so it was very 1 note.
google avatar

Yelp
Birria officianados! The California birria burrito was incredible and the tacos were excellent. The staff were so friendly and the restaurant was immaculate and comfortable. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while but would love to update my review. They did change their interior which looks a lot better and more spacious than before. They have a salsa bar and an area where you can get your own fountain drinks. The food is delicious as always and my absolute favorite Birria tacos in San Diego. The service was excellent and they were friendly. You order first and then they'll call out your number. It does get packed inside quickly so if there's two of you, then 1 person will order while the other one secures a table. You can also order to go. There's parking available out in the parking lot. This place is a must!
google avatar

Kareem J.

Yelp
Unexpected, reviews don't lie. Food was pretty good. We ordered the rotation and it was good. Staff was nice, place had a good vibe
google avatar

Reina S.

Yelp
This is our second time coming here. The service was excellent, the restaurant was very clean. The food was so delicious, you get a lot of food. It's well worth the prices. I like how they separate the noodles in the Birria Ramen from the consome so it does not get soggy.
google avatar

Nicole X.

Yelp
I saw this place a few times on Insta, and it looked so good and definitely did not disappoint. I personally am a big fan of the crunchwrap at Taco Bell, so I got their more elevated version of that, the Crunchstack and would definitely get again. It hit the same spot except with noticeablely higher quality ingredients. I also got their birria tacos, which were so flavorful and cheesy especially when fresh and hot. The service is pretty fast as well even when the restaurant is full.

Yelp
I came here for Taco Tuesday a little after 9 PM. You order at the counter, and even though there were a few people in front of me, the line moved quickly. The place was absolutely packed. There were only a couple of booths open so it definitely had that busy, high energy vibe. I ordered Mike's Meal, which comes with two tacos, dipping sauce, and chips. On Tuesdays, they throw in a third taco with the meal, which is a solid deal. They also have a huge salsa bar with at least six or seven different options so you can really customize everything. My order was ready in less than 10 minutes. They call your name and you grab it at the counter. The tacos were delicious. The birria was super flavorful, and one taco alone was pretty filling. I couldn't finish everything so they gave me a little to go container to take the rest home. The price is a bit on the higher side. It was $16.15 for Mike's Meal, and that didn't include a drink. That said, the quality was there. There's a tipping option at checkout, though it's not mandatory. It's always a little funny seeing that at counter service spots where you're picking up your own food and filling your own drinks. Service was fast. I wouldn't say the staff were overly friendly, but they were efficient and kept things moving. Overall, the food was great and came out quickly. I'd definitely recommend checking it out for Taco Tuesday.

Yelp
Great Service, Delicious food, and clean dining room. Parking lot is a little tight. I had a Birria Taco and Cali Burrito -- only complaint was I asked for crispy well done fries but got the regular soggy ones. I ate there... sooo no they didn't get soggy on the ride home. Still tasted great.
google avatar

Marie T.

Yelp
Tried this spot for the first time, here are some thoughts. Not much seating if you're planning on eating there, so keep that in mind. Not great for large groups for eating in, but I saw a couple that made it work (group of 5). Ordered the 2 birria tacos with cheese, flavor was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised that the tortilla for my first taco was crispy and not soggy. Unfortunately, they went really light on the meat, lol. I wouldn't rank it as my #1 birria spot in San Diego, but I would go again if I were in the area and in the mood.
google avatar

Rogelio T.

Yelp
Service was good and very welcoming from the staff. Unfortunately right after eating my stomach started hurting and well you know... I ended up in the toilet. I would avoid or be careful in eating here

Yelp
AWARENESS: My son and I stayed in Miramar last month and I saw on Yelp Mike's Red Tacos (the OG location) was not too far away. And since my son had never tried it before, I thought Mike's would be a good and cheaper option for a late night dinner. NARRATIVE: We arrived just before 10 pm and at first glance, I noticed this location appeared smaller than the new location in Point Loma. The menus are the same and staff and the staff, just as friendly. My son ordered both their Birria Ramen and Quesadilla. I ordered the Ramen and two tacos. The wait for our to go food was about 15 minutes and we headed back to base to consume our meals. My son didn't care for Ramen and I told him, I beleive the Point Loma location added more meat and had a better presentation. On the other hand, the tacos and quesadilla were good. SCENE: This Mike's location is located in the city of Clairemont, in a strip mall off of Genesee Avenue. RECOMMENDATION(S): Not a bad place for late night dinning but, I truly think the Point Loma location does it a bit better.
google avatar

Tyler H.

Yelp
Really hard to find a great Birria spot but this spot quickly surpassed my expectations. So much variety on the menu. You can get classic birria tacos or even ramen. Service is fast and the staff are incredibly nice and helpful. The side sauces at spicy but great variety to choose from. I asked for the queso on the side and it was fantastic to dip my Crunch stack in.

Yelp
Yumm! Birria everything! Finally tried this birria spot with my husband and it was good. No line upon entrance on a Saturday afternoon. Parking: has several areas sectioned within the shopping area it's located in. The entrance is visible from the lot with double blackened doors. Menu is posted on the wall upon entrance, very simple and easy to read. Prices are decent for the amount of good and cost in today's age. Food was ordered and called in a good timeframe. Consumé served on the side, about 2oz. We ordered two Mike's combos (2 birria tacos w/ chips and consumé $14.99 each). Birria was flavorful and juicy, cheese on the bottom of tacos were gooey and melted. Chips & queso purchased on the side and were good as well, not too spicy. Salsa bar also a plus! All salsas were great with good heat. Green one was my favorite. Coke products available. Inside plenty of tables along the wall with colorful walls and individual restrooms for men & woman. They were clean!
google avatar

Tin-Trung P.

Yelp
This is a great little late night meal, when you're desiring something a little more gourmet than your old reliable taco bell. The salsas are delicious and I appreciate how they season the chips too. I got it togo, so I think the fault of the tacos not being as crispy was probably on me. For the best experience, eat it there, especially with how they've moved into a new and bigger space, there's tons of seating. And the service was good, no frills, just an easy order, and nice workers.

Yelp
Stopped by this taco shop after being in the area to shop. Only one issue with the place they didn't have a restroom or a place where you could wash your hands. We improvised. Loved the food and the consume was good. A bit watered down, but still good. I liked being able to choose salsa from the bar for my chips. It was just the right amount for lunch. Parking was easy, but the place was so busy tables were at a premium. A way to wash up would be great.

Yelp
I've driven past this place a billion times, and for one reason or another, I never went in. But I finally did, and needless to say, I will be back!!! I got the nachos. I love that the chips were preseasoned, then with the birria on it and the pickled onions? Like bruhhhhhh. It was soooo good. And the consommé on the side? *chef kiss* it's not as good as my mom's-----but no one's ever will be. That being said, this birria is pretty darn close. The restaurant itself isn't too intimate, so maybe not an ideal date place to sit and eat at but definitely worth stopping in for lunch or to pick up dindin on the way home!

Yelp
Tried their offerings for the first time this am and wife and I very much enjoyed everything we had. We tried the Mike's meal deal with two birria tacos and consomme and chips, breakfast burritos, and four of the salsas. Everything was fantastic! And great thanks to the T-Mobile crew across the way for the recommendation!

Yelp
I was not expecting to like the veggie taco better than the original beef birria ! The extra textures and flavors in the veggie version actually go really well with the consommé dip so don't sleep on it!

Yelp
It was average. I honestly thought the reviews were a little overreacted. The queso was not warm. The wait was crazy long for the food and it was extremely loud and chaotic in the restaurant.

Yelp
PRO TIP: Bring wet wipes Mike's red taco is a great place to grab delicious birria tacos in a pinch. The fact that there are so many accessible locations all over San Diego makes them the perfect place to get your fix. This particular location however is very small. If you plan on eating here, either come early or hover around and wait for tables to leave. We came around 12:30 and of course it was already a packed house. There is one community table that sits about 6 people and around four small party tables that sit around 4 people each. So you can imagine turnover rates for these tables are low. Thankfully a party of two like us were leaving the community table so we were able to snag two seats. As for the food, it was hefty and well worth the price. Two queso birrias were definitely enough for one person and I left feeling super satisfied. If you do need sauce with it however there is a sauce bar by the entrance with their various offerings. Now the reason why I gave this place 4 and not 5 stars is because of its accommodation size and bathroom accessibility. I didn't bother asking where the bathroom was because there was barely enough room to move around and I didn't see any visible signs pointing anywhere. Luckily, I carry wet wipes everywhere so clean up was a breeze after a messy meal. I highly recommend you doing the same if you're visiting this location. Overall great food and friendly staff. Highly recommend coming early, wait, or order takeout.

Yelp
Mike's Red Tacos is everything birria. Birria is not for everyone due to the texture. It's shredded beef. We got the California burrito and combo #2 (no cheese). The burrito felt like 5 pounds! So much meat. My mom loved it because the meat was soft, tender and flavorful. It was easy on her dentures compared to a typical carne asada burrito. Combo #2 was no cheese and came with chips, cilantro, onions and consume. I should have tried the cheese version. The dining room is not that big and no outdoor seating. We ordered take out and saw people after us dining in but had no seats and ended up going home.

Yelp
Just found my favorite local spot. Excellent portion sizes per cost. Amazing flavors. Perfectly seasoned! Clean and fun interior. Super friendly staff. Everything we got was fresh. The fries inside the Cali burrito were crispy and seasoned. Usually that ends up being soggy and not seasoned well. Not this place... excellent! Stuffed!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
I give Mike's Red Tacos ~4.4/5 stars. In terms of food, the veggie taco was solid (but a veggie taco can only take you so far), the birria tacos were good but had a weird flavor on the back-end, and the tortilla chips were unfortunately stale. The service was exceptional: staff is friendly, proactive, and welcoming. The atmosphere was fine, but limited to 4/5 stars due to the fact that it's a strip mall taco joint--it's very clean, well-lit, and has A/C, but beyond that it's your standard taco shop storefront. The birria tacos aren't bad--I'd even say they're pretty good. The meat and the consommé had a bit of an odd taste on the back-end, however (I suspect it's something in the consommé). There are also such towering competitors in San Diego and Tijuana that it's difficult to see this shop breaking into the top 5 regionally. Still, for a Clairemont strip mall taco shop, the birria is good. They're also serving a need, since El Cotixan, Vallarta, and Roberto's don't serve birria (and no other one-off taco shop in Clairemont does either, as far as I know). Management seems invested in great customer experience, and even have an automated feedback form that goes to your phone after you order and eat. I appreciate that level of involvement in clientele. Finally, the salsa bar is solid. They've got six types of salsa that are all pretty flavorful and scrumptious. There you have it--4.4/5 stars for Mike's Red Tacos.

Yelp
So far the best birria tacos I have had so far. 10/10 definitely recommend checking out Mike's Red Tacos for a delicious bite. Their churros so tasty too! Great customer and thank goodness they expanded their spot so room for more people to enjoy their food!

Yelp
With so many taquerias in SD, why would you chose one with an American name? Really the name was a turn off for me since we wanted something authentic but we wanted to give it a try since it had 1.5k reviews. We got the regular tacos and birria tacos and they were decent, but nothing to rave about. They also charge $2.50 for a tiny bowl of consume which we thought was ridiculous because most taquerias include it in their price. I liked that they had birria ramen, which tasted better than their birria tacos. Again, with so many (authentic) taquerias in SD, why chose Mike's?

Yelp
Finally I got to try this place out. So Mike's Red Tacos has been in my bookmarks for quite some time and I finally had the opportunity to try it out yesterday evening with my family. It's tucked in a corner of a smaller shopping plaza in the area. Parking is sorta crappy with tiny spots but it was extremely had to find a spot. It's a small little shop that had a out 5 tables. We went yesterday evening around 6pm and it was consistently busy but we were able to get a table. We ordered a Cali burrito, combo #2 and a crunchstack for my family of 6. Our food came out pretty quick. My youngest did not eat any of it. It was plenty of food to share. I thought everything was good. My kids enjoyed the meal (especially my son who is super picky). Staff was super friendly. We all had a good experience. I'd definitely come back again in the future.

Yelp
It was my first visit to Mike's red tacos. The menu is fairly limited, but good. I did take a point off for the limited menu... Every Variation of Birria and tacos in crunch wrap, and burritos on fries, ramen . They do have an interesting looking vegetable taco that sounds delicious as wellI tried the quesadillas because I had to eat this on my way to someplace and it worked well for that.. Tender beef, good flavor. Service was quick, restaurant was clean. I would get again.,..

Yelp
Food was amazing!!!!! The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is because the wait time is insane! The employees are polite & nice, I think they either need more help or work a bit faster because we waited at least 1/2 hour... It was crowded! I noticed that once the cashier stopped taking orders he just lingered around instead of helping with take out orders or helping in general...their consume is the best I've had so far!!! I like that they give radishes & a slaw on the side...

Yelp
Amazing birria ramen was pack with flavor, with a large portion size. Taco were done right and the burritos were the size of a football. This place was packed and the service and wait time was still up to par. The ambiance was up beat and cool. I would definitely return to Mike's Red Taco's. I wish they had a location here in NC.

Yelp
I have never heard of this place until I saw the build of the new location in Mira Mesa. Since I love Birria and I love tacos, it was a no brainer that I had to try this place before the new place opened up in Mira Mesa. Let me tell you, the place did not disappoint. It was busy coming in on a Friday night dinner rush. However, The food was amazing! We tried the Birria Ramen and the Birria Tacos. It was better than I even dreamed it would be. The service was truly spectacular as they have it down like a well oiled machine. The ambiance is fun but small. We were lucky to get there early enough to find a table. Once we sat down and started eating, nothing else mattered. So delicious.
