The Best Lunch Spots In DC - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Mikey & Mel’s could cure even the worst bout of New York homesickness. Oversized sandwiches like the Mel—tender corned beef, not-at-all-dry turkey, swiss, coleslaw, and russian dressing—are piled high enough to require structural engineering. The sandwiches are easily enough for two meals, making them a great choice for those days you just know you’re going to be too tired after work to even contemplate dinner, much less cook it. If you don’t feel the need to schlep around half a sandwich for the rest of your day, you can’t go wrong with the hot dog—a massive all-beef number that doesn’t deserve to be buried beneath a heap of toppings. Keep it simple with a schmear of mustard and a sprinkling of sauerkraut." - allison robicelli, madeline weinfield

Mikey & Mel’s Deli is the latest transplant that has made its way to DC. I would have never thought this part of the city would be jam packed on a Saturday, but I quickly understood the popularity. After ordering on the kiosk, seating is first come first served, so be prepared to order your food to go if you can’t find a seat. I loved how the menu had sandwiches named after celebrities like Larry David and Seinfeld. I had the opportunity to order several items off the menu and here is what I chose: - Black & White and Sprinkle Cookie - The Seinfeld - Chopped Chicken Liver Overstuffed Sandwich (3/4 lbs) - Everything Bagel with Lox Spread - Chocolate Chip Pancakes Even though I came hungry, I still walked away with a take out bag. I highly recommend that you checkout this establishment for yourself. Don’t forget to check out the unlimited pickle bar and pack up a few for the road.

Google
I recently discovered the pickles in Fulton and so happy to know they finally opened a location in DC. Stopped by for a quick bite!! Literally had two plates of pickles, soup and sandwich!! I'm not big on going to sandwich shops but I recommend this place! Breakfast and lunch is served, so there is more to the menu than you can imagine. Price and quality is on point!! Staff is polite!

Emily K.

Google
While service was fast, quality just fine. Confused why this hot sandwich came in a box but others had theirs wrapped in foil. This place paints itself as a New York deli but it just feels off. Got a BEC on a “kaiser roll”, but anyone from the NY/Long Island area would never call this bun I got a kaiser roll…

I had an absolutely amazing experience at [Mikey&Mels]! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The staff was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. The food was outstanding—each dish was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The [benidict ] was particularly incredible! The portion sizes were generous, and everything was made with such high-quality ingredients. I also appreciated the attention to detail in the service. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience. I can’t wait to return!

Google
2nd visit. First visit take out and they gave me someone elses order which discovered when home thirty minutes away. Way overpriced. $30 for a corned beef on rye inc tax but before tip. Corned beef very chewy, hard to eat, flavorless. Cole slaw huge slices of cabbage. NOTHING LIKE philadelphia or NYC. Rye bread more like sourdough. Wont return.

Great experience at Mikey and Mel’s. Ordering process was very easy, food was delicious and came out quickly. Service was very attentive and friendly. Can’t wait to go back again.

Google
Huge fan of Mikey and Mel’s!! I’ve been a loyal customer since the opening of the Fulton location. The food is authentic and fresh. You’ll find some traditional Jewish delicacies that you don’t come across often in this area. I absolutely love how Jewish heritage is celebrated on this menu. Atmosphere is upbeat and perfect for a quick breakfast or midday pick me up. Not to mention - they have a pickle bar! What a clever and unique plus. Must try!!

Yelp
Visited during the soft opening and had a great pastrami sandwich on rye. The staff were very friendly and ordering on the touch screens was easy. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Just an amazing Jewish Deli in downtown DC.with a ton of food options in this area this is one the best places to eat. Food comes out in a reasonable amount of time, staff is friendly, and it is not too loud even when full.

Yelp
Three for lunch today. After finding a table, we went over to a row of kiosks to order. An employee was there to help each of us maneuver as it was our first time. The ordering process was straightforward, and you pay when you order. You also pick up a numbered stand so the server can deliver your food to the table. For drinks. You can purchased bottled beverages, including sodas/water, a soda station with unlimited refills and coffee/tea (also with refills). The soda with refills is a very reasonable $3. And there's a pickle bar! Half sours, dill and two kinds of sliced pickles (one with horseradish flavor) and olives. Nice pickle bar that comes with any purchase. I enjoyed my Mikey pastrami Reuben with side (I got potato salad). Nice sized sandwich - the Mikey is the smaller one, at 8 ounces). Cost $20.95 - although pricey, not too bad when you consider the side and pickle bar are included. The potato salad could have used a little less mayo and a little more flavoring. But not bad. One friend got the potato knish, which they said was very good. They wanted the cheese blintzes, but unfortunately, they were told they didn't have them today. My other friend got a salad with sliced chicken. It was a nice size, but they were not impressed. The Staff were friendly and answered some questions we had about the pickle bar, utensils, bathroom location, etc. it got pretty crowded at one point, but we never felt rushed or pushed to leave. I will come again and maybe try one of their omelettes or another sandwich. I think I'll stay away from the entree salads.

Yelp
I've been a few times to grab bagel sandwiches for breakfast and once for lunch. The bagels are probably the best I've had downtown, though, they are light on the schmear. The pickle bar is great. The corned beef, however, left me wanting more, especially at the price point. I've had better reuben's at multiple places in the DMV (Celebrity Delly and Lazy Mike's to name a couple) and elsewhere. In my opinion, the corned beef was about as good as I've gotten at a Harris Teeter deli counter.

Yelp
What a great authentic, Jewish deli in the heart of DC! Friendly folks, order yourself on the kiosks (had to wait about 5 min) but fast food delivery, and the food is great! Hot, fresh, great tasting corned beef, and pastrami! I love the pickle bar too with so many options. My only gripe is that they don't offer a half sandwich/soup combo. One person could never eat more than one of these massive sandwiches, so unless you have someone to share it with, you'll be way too full to eat anything else. The house made chips are some of the best I've ever had too! I'd definitely come back the next time

Yelp
Super fun new spot downtown! The menu is HUGE, and so many yummy things made in-house, from corned beef to pastrami, and fresh bagels. Desserts too! You can order at the kiosk when you first walk in, for take-out or dine-in. I would check first if there's any available tables, as it was very crowded when I went on a weekend. Matzo ball soup was amazing, and loved my Reuben sandwich, but could have used more sauerkraut! Lots of breakfast items served all day. Of course, the hugely popular "pickle bar" was a highlight! Variety from sweet to spicy pickles, and it's self-serve. So fun. The staff are super nice and the manager was incredibly helpful. Grab a huge black and white cookie on the way out. A spot to definitely check out soon!

Yelp
let's start with the positive - the meats (tried corned beef and brisket) were tasty. Sliced thin and piled on the sandwiches. but everything else is a mess. they're still new so may give them another shot down the line, but the experience was very hectic. placed an order online at 1pm on a sunday - quoted 30 minutes. arrived 10 minutes early and was told there were 5 orders ahead of mine. received the "order ready" text at 45 minutes, but the employees couldn't find the order so they fired another, which was ready 60 minutes after ordering. The place was packed, literally no seats available, and every dine-in order was taking over 60 minutes. The staff were disorganized, all working from one screen display showing all orders. the pickle bar was 80% empty, and the containers that had pickles in them, also had the tongs that are handled by every customer submerged in them. The pickle bar was not refilled once during the 40 minutes we waited. For the food - the reuben was decent. a ton of corned beef, and didn't get much flavor from the other components (thousand island, kraut, swiss, rye). the bread was sliced thin and as a result, soggy. The jewish cheesesteak was better - a steak and cheese with cole slaw and russian dressing. hot pepper cheese got lost, as did the fried onions. bread was ok, soft roll. tried three flavors of rugelach - none stood out, all were on the sweeter side, and texture was pretty hard overall. the sugar cookie was nice, firm on the bottom but soft inside and not too sweet.

Yelp
I'm a foodie. I love the experience from the service at ordering to the last bite of my Reubin. Wow. I'll be back!

Yelp
This city has been waiting for a great Jewish style deli. From yesterday's visit, I'm afraid this place isn't it. Stopped by before noon to check it out. It wasn't crowded. Ordered the matzoh ball soup, which was ginormous. $10 for the small portion. The matzoh ball was about 1.5 times larger than a baseball. Completely tasteless, as was the broth. Both needed salt and pepper. There was a bit of shredded chicken in the soup, and a few tiny pieces of carrots floating around. I left over most of the bowl's contents. The free pickle bar was very nice, with sweet pickle chips and crisp, sour pickles, so that's a plus. The chocolate ruggalah were pretty good, but they're not made on premises. When the place first opened, I stopped by to give it a quick look. I questioned whether they made their own pastrami and corned beef, since I saw commercial products in the deli case. I was given a confused explanation for them. Yesterday, I asked again, and this time was told by a counterman that no, they don't make their own pastrami and corned beef. Don't know about their other deli meats, such as brisket and turkey. You can get Saval products at some stores in town for less. The Yelp reviews are all over the place; some good, and some pretty dismal. Some of the glowing reviews seemed suspect, so I fed the restaurant's Yelp URL into my trusty Fakespot app, and it came up with a "C" rating as far as trustworthiness, with the explanation that only 60 percent of the reviews are reliable. So I suspect that the owners or their friends are supplying bogus reviews. On that basis, I won't return. Caveat emptor.

Yelp
Total Trash Decided to give this place a shot after seeing an article about it online. DO NOT EAT HERE. See the attached receipt and pics for my order details. The restaurant wasn't as busy as I've seen from the outside. I paid $40 and waited 45 minutes for a sandwich and a couple of side items. Given the shouting matches between the servers and the kitchen staff that I was able to easily hear, seems there is some confusion on how to get paying customers their food. The place had already closed for 15 min while I was still patiently waiting like a schmu*k near the counter. By the time they asked me what I was waiting for, I noticed my food had been sitting out for some time. Anyways, my food was cold by the time I got to eat. Question: Would I ever come back here? Answer: HELL TO THE NO, NO, NO. This place doesn't deserve to be in business let alone call themselves a deli. Don't waste your money and, moreover: DONT WASTE YOUR TIME. Go up the street to a REAL deli (starts with an L and ends with S). They wont waste your time like these morons do.

Yelp
I ordered a corned beef on rye sandwich (untoasted). The sandwich was huge, even though I'd ordered the smaller size. Okay, that is kind of standard for Jewish delis. But it wasn't good. The rye bread looked and tasted like Pepperidge Farm and fell apart because it's so unsubstantial. Excellent rye bread is available from bakeries in DC , such as Ravenhook. For the premium price, I'd expect good bread. The corned beef was bland and uninteresting. The cole slaw was also tasteless. The homemade chips were fine, but a little too thick and oversalted. I liked the pickle bar and the brewed iced tea, but those aren't reasons to return. (And I'm guessing store management would take a dim view of my purchasing an iced tea and dining on their free pickles. )

Yelp
Kills me to leave such a poor review, but I can't let it go. I order a bagel at the kiosk and want butter and cream cheese (feel free to judge me lol). As you can't add both on the kiosk, I asked the staff. It's early and not busy and the staff was gracious enough to put the butter in the bag. So what's the issue? I caught them starting to add the cream cheese the bagel without it being toasted. They went to correct it and I said it's ok, but they wanted to correct the issue. But when all is said and done, I got the original untoasted bagel and there wasn't anything in the bag for me to spread the butter. The staff was very nice, but the lack of attention to detail when I was literally one of three customers in the restaurant should be addressed.

Gerrie m.

Yelp
I was disappointed with my order. The first order was perfectly done. My order today 3-2-25 wasn't good at all. My egg salad sandwich bread was burned and the preparer cut the sandwich and all of the egg salad was in the container. I usually asked for the sandwich not be vut, but I didn't see a place to put it in there. I had hardly no egg salad on the sandwich. I wanted mayo on it. There was no mayo. I paid a heavy price for my sandwich. Your delivery is a great delivery, but your food needs to have consistency. Made and disappointed. Head to the kitchen to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I'm on crutches this is why I order in the first place. On the container it has Uber 256.

Yelp
Came for lunch. Food is pretty good--including a decent bagel and great deli meat--and I'd like to come back for more. Issue is they have a serious ticket/kitchen problem. Took over an hour to get our food, and the place was total chaos with everyone waiting like we were. So if you pass by and they're empty, go grab something. But otherwise, seems they need a month or two to sort out whatever is going on.

Yelp
Mikey & Mel's is a great addition to the Downtown DC breakfast and lunch scene. While there are a lot of options in the area, few are really targeted to the lunch crowd. The measure of a New York style deli, in my view, is their pastrami sandwich. So for my inaugural visit, that's what I tried. The pastrami had the right amount of fat that added flavor but was not rubbery or chewy. The meat had a good peppery flavor and it was very tender. For those who want to get into the weeds, it was machine cut thin. The homemade chips on the side were plentiful and delicious. When I came to the restaurant slightly before noon it was a bit chaotic, but my food was ready when promised and was still warm when I returned to my office. I wish they'd thrown in a pickle for my to go order. It's a tough time for the deli business and an even tougher time for a lunch restaurant in DC. Prices are reasonable for a deli, but I hope that workers in the area are willing to continue to spend $20+ for lunch to keep this place going. I'll definitely be back to check out some other menu items (and the homemade bagels).

Wayne O.

Yelp
Just walking around and ran across Mikey's & Mel's. Very easy to order. Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Food was fantastic. Great for people watching while you enjoy. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Took 35 min to get soup, kugel, and fries. We got in before the lunch rush too! My friend's sandwich came in 10 min. I get they are new and sorting out but right now it's not reliable for lunch. Edit: Upped the rating because they did give me a larger size of all the items, and they were all very tasty. But I did get back as my next meeting was beginning and was lucky I could turn my camera off and scarf down my food, instead of getting to sit with my friend and chat over lunch like we planned. I'll probably come back again but probably not for a few months so they can iron out their process.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place. Sadly, I felt sick for a few hours after eating it. If you like a lot of meat on your sandy, they def load them up. Honestly, I wish I had tried the turkey Ruben instead. Cute place but no NYC deli

Honestly S.

Yelp
Requested a toasted pastrami sandwich. Bread wasn't toasted, pastrami was unnecessarily fatty. Housemade potato chips (offered as a side dish for the sandwich) were stale and oily. Was excited about a real deli downtown, but won't be returning here.

Yelp
Unfortunately did not live up to my expectations. I think it was their first real day of service so maybe they just need to work out some kinks. But I got there at 11:30am and they were sold out of half their sandwiches. It took about 15 minutes for them to make my order which isn't terrible. Bagel sandwich was meh, they also put the wrong cheese on it. Pastrami sandwich was also only so so.
google avatar

Morgan R.

Yelp
I was tremendously ill after eating at Mikey & Mel's. I didn't find anything about my meal to be worth recommending and I won't be back.It was not a New York deli experience at all. Not impressed with the cleanliness of the place. The condiments had some dried on gunk that grossed me out. I will say the staff was very nice and prompt. I just didn't take to the food or the vibe.
google avatar

M K.

Yelp
Super mid. Bagels were lousy, neither crusty nor doughy. A well toasted Lender's is better. Omelette wasn't much better. Fruit was inedible. Kiosk ordering then they charge $3 credit card surcharge -- but the kiosk doesn't accept cash. Packed up my food in a bag even though I was eating there. Table was super wobbly (they just opened!). Overall bad.

Yelp
Getting better every day. Finding your groove. Service, speed, presentation improving.

Yelp
Visited for lunch, and it was a wonderful experience. So happy to have a good deli in DC! I ordered the Turkey Pastrami on Rye and visited the pickle bar and it was wonderful (half sours and horseradish pickles- yum!)! The staff was very friendly, and checked in on our table from time to time to make sure we were enjoying our meal. With that said, the sandwiches are GIANT; I thought I had seen online that you could order half a sandwich, but I couldn't figure that out in ordering from the kiosk. I'll definitely be returning for lunch again as everything we had was delicious!

Nolan G.

Yelp
Enjoyed the food especially the Reuben and pickle bar is a nice touch. Definitely a place I'll be back too!

Alyssa W.

Yelp
I love my classic deli pastrami sandwich which tasted divine, but I ordered a dill pickle and was charged $1.50 and received a 1/4 of a pickle ( a spear) and that seems outrageous to me.

Scott S.

Yelp
First time in. Walking in from outside on a very cold day I was so excited to see the deli signs! It teminded me of a NY deli right away. We came in a little before the noon lunch hour. There were only about 10 tables taken, so easy to find an empty one. Kind of cold inside for a comfortable lunch most everyone had their jackets on..Easy to order, and found the pickle bar right away which was stocked with all kinds of all you can eat pickles! Great surprise. Our food came within 10 minutes after ordering, which is all done by keying in your order on tablet screens as you enter. So how was the food? I'd say for DC, this is about as good as it's gonna get. My extra lean 1/2 lb extra lean corned beef Reuben tasted quite amazing (but looked just like my friend's reg, not lean CB Reuben..), no choice was available for the bread, except for standard rye, which was butter grilled, the half sour green pickles snapped in my mouth and had a perfect taste. The potato salad side was pretty bland but chunky, added salt and pepper and was good. Everything served in takeout containers these days..I get it, but I'd love to eat in a deli that served on plates! At 12:01, the place was packed, 20 people in line, and lots of people standing around. I also ordered a meat knish, but they served me a potato knish by mistake. I told a staff member and I believe the manager Scott heard and told them to send me a replacement meat knish ASAP, but of course keep the one I got. I got home and the meat knish was also a potato knish.. : ), oy vey! Haha. Good thing the potato knish was good, and I think on purpose, had small bits of corned beef in it as well...All in all I will be back to try more..and get that darn meat knish once and for all... rated it as a 4 because, well, a 5, in DC would need to blow my Jewish socks off...this was close but wasn't quite sock blowing..

A Z.

Yelp
The corned beef was good, sliced nice and thin and not very fatty. The bread needs work - chewy rye bread crust is not what I like.
google avatar

Eileen S.

Yelp
Assembly of these sandwiches needs SO much work. Seemed like everything was slapped together. You can tell they're working with good quality ingredients but sandwiches are falling apart and bread can't support the contents inside. Frustrating to eat.

Leslie B.

Yelp
Three Stars for hopes and dreams... First of all, everything looked and smelled great. Like amazingly great. The deli counter meats looked moist and perfect. The cookies looked delectable. Everything was really clean and the decor was nice. I can't wait to try the food. However... I called in advance to try to place a carry-out order and got a recording that said to go online to do so. I went online. The website says they aren't accepting online orders. Ok. I only work 6 blocks away, so I decided to walk over. It's 30 degrees out and it's a perfect day for matzo ball soup. I got there about 1:15pm, which I figured would be somewhat after the bulk of the lunch rush, especially when the government was mostly on telework due to the weather. The line was 10 people deep and there was a lovely but somewhat haggard looking lady telling everyone that the wait for food was going to be 35-45 minutes. I asked her if that included carry-out soup, and she said yes, it was for everything. So I had to leave because I don't have that much time to wait today. But I WILL come back again, hopefully at a less busy time. They just opened and are still getting it together.

Yelp
being from NY I am very picky about delis. I go to M&M's three times per week. It is the best of tge best!

Yelp
Delish. I had the pastrami and a matzah ball soup. Both were great. I would go back for sure.

Yelp
No New Yorker or Angelino would ever mistake this place for a real Jewish deli. It makes you order from a touchscreen -- no human contact. And the food --oh my God. Anything cooked is awful. The corned beef hash is a pile of barely cooked potatoes with one or two slices of fatty corned beef. The only decent items are baked goods, which come from someplace else (maybe New York City or Baltimore?). Decent bagels and good rugelach. Stay away from everything else. The dining room is crowded and uncomfortable. Haven't the Jews suffered enough?

Yelp
I ordered 18 sandwiches and five salads totaling $537. The order came without condiments and salad dressing. They literally blamed the delivery driver. When I called they said they would send it right over, but it unfortunately never came. Why lie? It was a waste of five salads. We had the plain sandwiches. First and last time. Not a good look for a new deli! SMH

Yelp
Happy to announce that I gave Mikey and Mel's another shot last week for lunch, and was pleasantly surprised! It seems like they've worked out most of the kinks with wait times and ordering, although it still got busy at noon. I dined in this time with a friend and we both got sandwiches, one hot and one cold. We ordered the honey turkey which was delicious and came out quickly, and the Adam Sandler which was massive and yummy. I want to also give a special shout out to staff member Brianna who was so friendly and helpful even during the lunch rush.

Yelp
Just stopped in for a sandwich and they were out of pastrami.... At a deli This place needs a few more months to get it together. Don't come until summer 2025.

Yelp
Amazing deli! The cheesesteak is super big!! Their rye bread is fresh and pairs perfectly with the Reuben, which is loaded with tender corned beef and tangy sauerkraut. Highly recommend for a quick, delicious meal!!

Yelp
Absolutely spectacular family-owned deli! Great service and food! Love the pickle bar - a new DC staple that everyone needs to visit! I want to try every sandwich on the menu! Staff is very helpful in customizing dishes based on allergies and dietary preferences. There is something for everyone here!

Yelp
I went at 3p on a Friday and the place was sort of full, but far from packed. Some customers had waited over an hour for their order. Staff was super nice and understanding but clearly overwhelmed. They have a lot of kinks to work out. Would only recommend placing orders online vs their in store kiosks, so you're not wasting time waiting for your order in the store.

Yelp
I went in today and ordered a sandwich (mind you, a sandwich at this place costs $23). I was excited for the experience as a fan of old school Jewish delis. After I waited half an hour, I flagged down a member of the wait staff and asked what was the hold up. The staffer laughed at my saying I'd been waiting half an hour and said that the average wait was 45 minutes and that they had two people in the kitchen who had called out. My response was that their staffing issues aren't my issue to fix and they needed to address it themselves because a wait of 45 minutes for a lunchtime sandwich is unacceptable. The women at the table next to me waited over an hour before they gave up and left. By the time I finally got my sandwich, it was so wet from all the meat juice that the bread was soggy. It felt like it had been slapped together and rushed out as quickly as possible. I've also never seen a reuben before that didn't have sauerkraut. My take? Overpriced, rude staff, long wait times, and messy food. Skip it.

Yelp
It's a must-visit for deli lovers. The pastrami on rye is piled high with tender, flavorful meat and the Reuben is perfectly balanced with corned beef!! The matzo ball soup is delicious!! The service is super friendly and very pleasant. Whether you're grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a meal, Mikey & Mel's is a true gem in the heart of DC!! Great Ambiance!!

Yelp
Horrible, no hours posted and they are closed on weekends! Would not come back, stay away!

Yelp
Closed on weekends. Only days I could actually try their food. I guess they're allergic to customers.

Yelp
Check this place out! Great place for breakfast or lunch. Amazing bagels and specialty deli sandwiches. Come hungry. Portions are huge.

Yelp
Mikey and Mel's was unremarkable other than the prices. 1 Corned Beef sandwich, 1 Pastrami sandwich 2 small soups and 2 sodas $65.00. So what kind of deli allows itself to run out of rye read? The staff made it sound like this wasn't the first time this has happened. The ordering system was clunky I would much prefer to tell the staff what I want vs hunt through the software. The sandwiches were good but not great. There was plenty of meat on them but not enough to justify the price. The soups were about what you would expect from any deli. Again, a very average deli (at best) with premium prices. The one bright spot was the staff. They were attentive but didn't hover. This is a one and done for me.

Yelp
Mikey & Mel's conveniently located in the heart of DC's busy L St NW neighborhood is a dining gem. It's a classic NYC-style deli with everything you'd expect including generously proportioned corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. We liked the sides including potato salad and cole slaw. The huge pickle bar is another unique feature. Can't wait for our next breakfast or lunch at Mikey & Mel's.
