Milk Bar - Review - Fulton Market - Chicago - The Infatuation

"With locations in NYC, LA, Vegas, DC, and even Bellevue, it was only a matter of time until Chicago got a version of this very popular bakery from the Momofuku family. At Milk Bar in Fulton Market, you can expect classics like a cereal milk soft serve and Compost cookies, as well as Chicago specials like a hot dog bomb with a poppyseed bun, tomato, relish, pepper, and mustard. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

Milk Bar Chicago Gets A February Opening Date | Eater Chicago

"The bakery, founded 17 years ago in New York and known for treats such as Compost Cookies and the once-controversial Milk Bar Pie, will open its first Midwest store inside the Hoxton Chicago hotel lobby at 200 N. Green Street, debuting on Saturday, February 8 at 10 a.m. A national chain with locations in New York, D.C., and LA, it helped raise founder Christina Tosi’s profile as one of the most recognizable figures in the restaurant industry; the concept is an offshoot of the Momofuku empire where Tosi served as pastry chef and has been bolstered by TV appearances and books. The Chicago crew will unveil exclusive items like a Portillo’s Chocolate Cake Cookie and the Hot Dog Bomb, described as a rounder Chicago-style cousin of a bagel dog made with “bun-inspired bread” stuffed with hot dog bites and topped with the familiar mustard, tomatoes, and neon-green relish combo; there are also bagel bites stuffed with cream cheese for savory fans. The smaller Hoxton location (the chain’s 11th) will offer a full menu of cookies and treats like cake truffles, and signature items such as Birthday Cake and other cakes and pies will be available by the slice and whole, though shelves and inventory won’t match larger New York outposts; the menu shifts seasonally — opening-menu examples include soft-serve pancake-flavored ice cream and winter items like Velvet Cheesecake Cake and Red Velvet Truffles, alongside year-round standards like Cereal Milk soft-serve ice cream. The Chicago site is a partnership with Boka Restaurant Group, which handles food and beverage at the Hoxton and runs the basement bar Lazy Bird, Stephanie Izard’s rooftop restaurant Cabra, and the first-floor Mediterranean restaurant Cira. To mark the opening, the first 50 people in line before the 10 a.m. opening on February 8 will receive a copy of Tosi’s latest, Bake Club: 101 Must-Have Moves for Your Kitchen; Tosi also created the Netflix cooking competition Bake Squad, which featured Chicago’s Maya-Camille Broussard of Justice of the Pies. The location will also be available on third-party delivery services DoorDash, GrubHub, Caviar, and Uber Eats." - Ashok Selvam

Chicago’s Getting a Milk Bar from Christina Tosi | Eater Chicago

"A high-profile bakery from Christina Tosi is opening in Chicago this winter inside a corner café of the hotel at 200 N. Green Street through a partnership with Boka Restaurant Group. Founded in 2008 with locations across major U.S. cities, the shop has used pop-ups and a pandemic-era ghost bakery to serve locals and has aggressively protected its brand; it plans a menu of signature items including cookies in flavors like cornflake chocolate chip marshmallow, confetti, and blueberry-and-cream, cake truffles, whole cakes and pies by the slice, cereal-milk soft-serve, milkshakes, breads, a Chicago-style hot dog riff on its stuffed bagel called a Bagel Bomb, and a forthcoming cookie collaboration with a local institution, while leveraging hotel foot traffic and third-party delivery." - Ashok Selvam

Milk Bar Is Now Selling Its Cookies at Target Stores Nationwide | Eater NY

"After partnering with Target, Milk Bar is now selling packages of its soft-baked cookies — in confetti, compost, and cornflake chocolate chip marshmallow flavors ($4.99 for eight) — and newly created truffle crumb cakes — birthday, chocolate birthday, and chocolate chip ($2.99 for two) — at Target stores nationwide. The brand had already begun selling desserts at Whole Foods and had signaled plans to bring its baked goods to grocery shelves across the country, a strategy founder Christina Tosi outlined in February 2019. Last year the company opened a sprawling 4,000-square-foot flagship inside the Nomad’s Ace Hotel, paid for with more than $10 million in investor capital; Tosi likened the store to a daytime "slumber party." However, critics have noted a loss of the original East Village character as the chain grows — Eater critic Ryan Sutton wrote that the new flagship feels like "a joint outpost of a Hudson News and a commercial bakery at JFK." The Target rollout is the latest step in Milk Bar’s push to become a national, household dessert brand." - Luke Fortney

Got the classic cereal milk soft serve and it was as expected. My only critique about the recipe is that it's salted heavier than I'd like - it made the ice cream taste heavier and almost savory. The storefront is small with lots of seating. Located in a good foodie part of town.

I haven't had Cereal Milk ice cream in three years. So when I learned Milk Bar was in Chicago, I had to visit! First time, I had the ice cream and tried their strawberry shortcake truffles which were yummy, but a bit too sweet for me. Second time, I tried the Lemon Meringue Pie ice cream (so good!) and the birthday cake truffles (fantastic!). Both times I received impeccable customer service from Jason! I appreciated his sunny vibes and how he handled customers. He left a really good and memorable impression on me. Consistently good desserts and customer service? I'll be back for sure. ☀️

Skip the cookies and get one of everything else. Yes, I love Milk! Its such a delight coming in here & seeing all the goodies. Everything is absolutely delightful! Except the cookies are just good, not great. The sugar pie, or whatever they call it is divine. Im glad it's cut in smaller pieces because honey, it's portion control. Cake bites are super. Second to none. The bagels stuffed with hot dogs (really smokies) were amazing. And the location is adorable! The staff was alright, not too helpful tho. It's a sugar coma experience!

hit milk bar in the west loop inside the hoxton hotel and it was amazing. the cereal milk soft serve was super good, and the compost cookies definitely lived up to the hype. jason was the one helping me out and he made the whole experience even better, real easygoing and just cool to talk to. will be back for sure.

I recently visited Milk Bar and tried the pancake soft serve along with three pieces of their birthday truffle. The service was excellent, and I received some great suggestions from the staff. My total for the soft serve and the three birthday truffles came to $19. I’m glad I went when the hype had died down, as it made for a more relaxed experience. However, I would say my overall impression was just okay. While the service was commendable, the desserts didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had. If you're curious, it might be worth a visit, but don’t expect a mind-blowing experience.

Followed the hype, visited day after opening with no line. Underwhelming design & decor, more like fast serve sweet shop. 3 cookies are best sellers had the Compost, it was good, a lot of random ingredients, Birthday cake also a best seller, had balls you could try vs a slice. Quick service You can take your sweets into the Hoxton lobby for a comfortable seat

As expected from any BOKA Restaurant Group-affiliated spot, Milk bar did not disappoint! I've been a fan of Tosi for a while, and attending the grand opening on Saturday, 2/8, was such a fun experience. It was cold 🥶, but the staff brought so much energy, and Christina was incredibly friendly and lovely in person. The hot dog bomb was a standout! I was initially worried it might have just one overwhelming flavor, but instead, you can truly taste all the delicious hot dog flavors in every bite. I definitely wish I had gotten more of those! I also tried the red velvet cake and quadruple chocolate cake—both were on the sweeter side, so a tall glass of milk is a must! The rich flavors were truly indulgent. I’m excited to go back soon!

Walked in after dinner on a Tuesday night, and there was only like one group that they had already bought their goodies and they were eating them. So it was really great to get a good look of the place since it is on the smaller end and part of the hotel. The staff are very nice. They were attentive, which was great because I was gonna buy a lot of treats. I got the compost cookie, chocolate confetti, confetti cookie, and a peanut butter cookie. I got a piece of the birthday cake and a piece of the quadruple chocolate cake as well as one pie slice (which I think was named as the crack pie at some point), and of course I got the hotdog pastry because it’s for Chicago so I gotta do it for Chicago. I don’t really eat a lot of confetti cake or cookies, but I think milk bar made some nice options here. The pastry chef Christina Tosi, I feel like, really cracked code to making good treats. I really liked the pie. It was so legally, but also sweet and tiny bit savory. I don’t think all the treats were overwhelmingly sweet at all. Since it’s a big brand, I thought could they replicate the flavors all over the US and yah they can! The only bummer was that the pancake soft serve was out because the machine was not working. I thought that was kind of funny because it is like McDonald’s. I’d come back for the soft serve and the pie!
