MilkBoy - Review - South Street - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"This location of Milkboy, the all-day cafe and music venue mini-chain, isn’t as well-known as the one in Old City, but it’s the better of the two. And that’s mostly because they have some underground deal with Jim’s next door, where you can order one of their cheesesteaks directly to your table without having to wait in line." - Sydney McElwee

15 Places In Philly To Eat And Drink On South Street

"South Street’s Milkboy may not have the music stage like the Old City location, but they’re both all-day cafes, have the same sandwich-heavy menu, and are perfect for spending a Phillies game yelling at the large TVs lining the walls. It’s a no-brainer place to grab nachos and a blacked chicken panini during your lunch break or stop by after 5pm when the bar goes full service. And since you need a distraction from watching the scoreboard anyway, you can bite into their juicy burger while singing your heart out to Lorde during karaoke nights on Tuesdays or tap into your ultra-competitive side on their Monday quizzo nights. " - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Best Philly Bars & Restaurants With Live Music

"Milkboy Studios is a place where everyone from Miley Cyrus, to Silk Sonic, to Jazmine Sullivan has record albums so, of course, their all-day cafe turns into a place for live music at night. It’s the kind of casual spot where you chill at the bar with an IPA, bite into a burger on a milk bun loaded with pickled jalapeños and crispy bacon, and ask a date about their favorite albums while waiting for the show to start. On most nights, you’ll need a ticket, so make sure you book a spot ahead of time, as most shows here sell out or have limited tickets at the door. " - candis mclean

A Guide to Pop-Ups Around Philly During the Coronavirus Crisis | Eater Philly

"At the four-year-old South Street location, MilkBoy flipped the space into Rock Salt, a music-infused streetery decked with twinkling lights, holiday decor, gold and platinum records, and a heat lamp at every table; the festive pop-up slings hot cocktails (hot buttered rum, a Rock ’n’ Rye Toddy) and a traditional Boilo, and serves cheesesteaks from neighbor Jim’s Steaks, with cocktails starting at $12 and hours Monday–Wednesday 3–10 p.m. and Thursday–Sunday 11 a.m.–10 p.m." - Tierney Plumb

Stopping in to MilkBoy for a mid-day snack and drink with my husband. Honestly we were just out for a walk but the live music drew us in. The place has great vibes and it was a beautiful day and they had all the doors open. We had the fried cauliflower, it was great, I enjoyed the Korea BBQ sauce and he had the Buffalo. The drinks were also fantastic, we tried the Some Like It Hot Honey, it was like a spicy honey infused old fashioned, we also tried the Chai-tea-in, it is a wonderful tea infused drink made with vanilla vodka snd coffee liqueur.

Google
This place is poppin and the people who work here are cool. They have coffee specials and a French toast drink that’s sooo good. Perfect after dinner drink spot. Karaoke upstairs. No more words need to be said

Google
This place is flippin great. As a Ravens fan in South Jersey, it's wonderful to go over the bridge and have a place to go with other local fans in Eagles Country. The food is great. The atmosphere is SO cool and the bartenders are dope. If you don't the black birds, Sunday maybe be a rough day to go but DEFINITELY check this place out.

Google
I really use to like this place when it was a pizza shop and live band up stairs. I give that place 5 stars . Now this new place a 2 star food is shm. I ordered chicken fingers not real meat they remind me of McDonald's chicken nuggets shm. I don't mind paying for good food and drinks. This was not the place .Drink kettle one pine apple and not a double prices way to high. This is not Fine Dining. So with that being said I can go to a chain restaurant and get more for my Money. And I'm not cheap from NJ

Google
I want to confidently share my feedback on my recent experience. The drink I ordered was excellent and hit the spot. However, the chicken sandwich fell short of expectations. It had a flavor that struck me as reminiscent of fish batter rather than the savory taste I was looking for in a chicken sandwich.

You can order Jim's Cheesesteaks here and avoid the long lines. Came here for lunch while visiting South Street in Philadelphia. I initially thought about going to Jim's across the street. However, after seeing the line down the street and the limited indoor seating, decided to come to Milkboy, especially since you can order a Jim's Cheesesteak from Milkboy. It was early in the afternoon, so there was plenty of seating. Came to the upstairs bar area and was immediately greeted by the bartender. She was exceptionally friendly and helpful. She genuinely wanted to know how I enjoyed the cocktails she made. Ordered a few cocktails, Fried Brussels Sprouts, Chicken Cheesesteak, and Jim's South St. Brussels Sprouts arrived within 7 minutes and the Cheesesteaks within 15 minutes, which was much faster than waiting in the line at Jim's. Surprisingly, I actually liked the Chicken Cheesesteak more than the Jim's Cheesesteak. It was juicier and more flavorful. The Jim's was really good, but I preferred the Chicken Cheesesteak. The Brussels Sprouts were very crispy and had a nice char to them. Overall, I'm glad I came her to MIlkboy as it allowed me to order their Chicken Cheesesteak and also Jim's Cheesesteak from across the street. It wasn't crowded, food and drinks were delicious, and great customer service.

Google
This location needs a nice deep cleaning! Pretty gross all around. The food was alright, the drinks weren’t great, but they had the Eagles game on, so we stayed.

Google
Absolutely love this bar. All the hosts and bartenders are super nice. The food is AMAZING. It's my go-to bar for sports and food. Oh and if you order the El hefe you get a shot and a beer. So they have awesome deals too :)

Yelp
Went here with some friends for 80s quizzo/burlesque night and it was a ton of fun! The bartenders were kind, attentive, and fun to talk to. They made sure our waters and beers were always filled and kept the snacks coming all night. We were upstairs for the event which had a much more cozy atmosphere than downstairs. I don't think the downstairs area would be my vibe, it seems more dive-y and crowded while I enjoy a more relaxed drinking environment. For my vegetarian friends, you'll be able to find something to eat here. They have cauliflower wings, nachos, tacos, fired pickles, etc. The nachos were the best, but the pretzel bites were a close second!
google avatar

Yelp
Classic dive bar with lots of regulars in a busy part of town. The drinks were priced reasonable but of the 2 bartenders the female bartender was more focused on talking the whole time with a patron and offered no help. The other bartender male was taking care of everything meanwhile. It was loud and had great music. Big drinks and good beer selection. Just a little lacking in the customer service.
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
I popped in for the first beer of the night. I loved the vibe here. It's cozy yet lively and there's upstairs seating. I didn't enjoy any food this night but the menu has quite a diverse offering. The service was prompt and friendly. They even gave me some great suggestions for my next hop.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a drink. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Good Vibes and enjoyed a comedy show show as well. Had chicken fingers which were OK. Overall good experience
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
This Milkboy is way smaller than the OG spot I used to frequent during my band days. The fried pickles were a fun shareable item but the place was super packed and service chugged along a bit. The dude from Pete and Pete had his band perform on the corner which was pretty rad. Nostalgia and Yelp reviews go hand-in-hand
google avatar

Johnny S.

Yelp
The management in this place is remarkable. Max and Shannon are aces. They ensure an incredible experience! Absolutely love this place. Thanks for all your hard work Milkboy!

Yelp
The experience I had here, drinking a dark and stormy with the windows wide open on a gorgeous spring day in Philly, is what 5 star dreams are made of. I am excited to go back and try out more of the food items, but the bar is well-priced and they have a fantastic happy hour. This part of South will surely have a bit more foot traffic now that Jim's is back open, and Milkboy is a fab part of this re-renaissance. They have a great upstairs space here that hosts everything from comedy to cover bands, and you can't beat the vibes in the bar space as well. The bar staff here was accommodating, speedy, kind, and helpful during my visit, and I look forward to the next time I get to stop by.

Yelp
Drink review: We stopped by for Saturday night drinks and seems like this place gets super packed for happy hour! We ordered an old fashioned and Sunday sipper. Sunday sipper was really good! Fruity and not too sweet.
google avatar

Brittney B.

Yelp
Abby was our bartender and she's amazing! I was indecisive on getting the Philly cheesesteak from milk boy or Jim's across the street so I got both. They're both great. Can't go wrong. We went on open mic night. Great vibes.

Yelp
Before a show at the theater of living arts, my friends and I stumbled across MilkBoy to get a drink and have dinner beforehand! MilkBoy is only a couple minute walk from the theater, and we actually had a view of the theater from where we were seated! Seating is pretty limited at MilkBoy, with a couple two person tables and bar seating on the first floor, and one larger table along with a bar and a couple two person tables on the second floor. My group seated ourselves at the larger table situated right below a TV playing Jurassic park on repeat and we scanned the QR code to access the menu. For drinks, we got the purple rain, citrus sinatra, watermelon cooler high, lancaster amber, and sweet child o lime for our first round. All the cocktails had fun names and we were reasonably priced, especially given the portion! For food, we ordered the chicken quesadillas, fried chicken sandwich, MilkBoy burger, and cauliflower cheesesteaks. Although the quesadillas are considered a starter, they were definitely enough for an entree and were very dense. The cauliflower cheesesteak was also very filling, and both my friend and I were unable to finish our fries. For our second round of drinks, we got chocolate pretzel shots, a green tea shot, and an espresso martini. The chocolate pretzel shot was sweet but nothing about its taste resembled a chocolate pretzel. One of my friends compared it to a maraschino cherry and loved it. Overall, the MilkBoy is a great casual place for a drink and food! My only complaint was that it was very dark, so it was difficult to see our food. However, the service was great and we loved our waitress!

Yelp
Very friendly, neighborhood type bar in Philly. I saw it while eating my cheesesteak at Jim's which is across the street. The afternoon bartender was a good dude and interacted with locals and Philly visitors alike in a really chill and pleasant way. Great spot to spend a little time watching a game and having a few pops. Would return again for sure!

Yelp
I think the best things about this place are the location and having outdoor seating. You can sit outside, enjoy the weather and people watch in an interesting Philly location (there is a lot to see near South street). The food is regular fare, nothing memorable (except for the appetizer quesadilla that was definitely entree sized) or special, ok price. The drinks are a little hit or miss (my sister had to return a drink once because it seemed the mix proportions were off)...my margarita was fine. The service is relatively quick, servers are polite but not overly attentive or nice. And they accept cards (some of the surrounding places are cash only). I would definitely come back if I was on south street and needed something low key.

Yelp
Didn't even know they had a location at 4th and South Streets. I was in the area with a friend today and it was lunch time so we stopped in. We were the only people when we walked in. The waitress was nice. We ordered and our food didn't take long to come out. I ordered the nachos. They were ok but something on them was sweet. I prefer my nachos to be savory. My fiend got a cheesesteak of which I took a bite and it was good! We also split waffle fries and Brussels sprouts. There was seating at the bar and about four high top tables. I'd go back and get a cheesesteak!
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 I had a business partner flying in from Peru who was interested in a cheesesteak and he chose the Milkboy. OK, random, but it was a nice walk from my office and he was paying for lunch, so I was in. We were there for close to three hours between having lunch and talking, and overall, it was a nice experience. Music was a little loud, and the screaming ambulances and random crazy homeless person was entertaining since the huge windows were open to the street. My drink was accidentally spilled not more than a minute or two after it was placed on the table, and there was no offer to replace it. Bummer. I did order a cheesesteak - Oh my gosh! It was small and mighty, with big chunks of grilled onions (I liked it) and whatever cheese they used nicely melted in together. The bread roll was seeded. They use excellent freshly shaved rib eye and the quality was unexpected. Definitely pricy at $14.

Yelp
I went to Milkboy on a Friday from 5-6 mainly to see a friend play some covers, but got so much more than that out of my experience. When we arrived, we noticed that there were only 2 and 4 tops available. It's extremely difficult to get 1 kid to sit at one of these tables, and we brought 2 of them. Thankfully, one of the staff jumped into action and set up a table on the sidewalk so we could keep the kids comfortable and enjoy some food. We ordered everything on the happy hour menu. Yes, everything. We got the Brussels, French fries, buns, chips and guacamole and also got a burger to add to the list. There was a rep for one of the beer companies that milkboy uses, and the rep was buying the first round so the wife got a free drink to go with the meal. The food came really quickly, which is a must when you got 2 kids bugging you every second. Everything was hot and yummy. Both kids loved the Brussels. Super crispy and flavorful! The burger was also perfectly cooked and juicy. I didn't try the buns, but my wife and toddler gobbled them down. Happy hour is definitely the way to go when you're bringing the family out for dinner. Our whole meal, thanks to the rep was under $40! Milkboy for the win.
google avatar

Payal P.

Yelp
Milkboy doesn't disappoint when it comes to their food and beer in the late night hours. I got Chips and Guac. The chips were super crispy and the guac was definitely freshly prepared. The service was quick and friendly as well.

Kristin S.

Yelp
The food is amazing. Looks like regular south st bar but food is fresh and really high quality . Live across the street and had no clue. Lol no wonder its so busy but staff handles it! Missed out being judgie. Love the food and staff
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Chai-tini's! Wonderful service! Great spot that we randomly found while sightseeing. Will come back!
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
Lovely bar with great atmosphere. Plenty of specials on the calendars. The fried pickles were a great piece of bar food to snack on before going to a concert at TLA across the street. It's a perfect spot to hit before and after a concert at TLA. The bartenders were all friendly and attentive, but not to an overbearing degree. Definitely going to come back.
google avatar

Phylicia H.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday to watch the game and grab a quick drink and bite of food. Perfect location on South St and really big space. Outdoor seating, bar upstairs and plenty of sitting downstairs. Sat at the bar and was still able to get a nice breeze from the outside since it is all opened up. Bartender was very friendly and fast! Ordered city wide, which I love that they offered that. Also ordered brussel sprouts, which came with pineapple sriracha. The sprouts were so good and the sauce paired extremely well with it. The beer that came with the Natty Bo city wide was really good. National bohemian! Great spot and highly recommend checking this place out!
google avatar

Corinne C.

Yelp
Nice ambiance and they have garage doors that open for the nice weather in the downstairs bar area. Good beer selection
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Really amazing. You would never know how quality it is based on the rather non-descript decor. But, they have top notch old fashioneds and one of the best quesadillas ever in life with a crisp shell and super flavorful chicken. A great start to a night on South Street.
google avatar

Rebekah M.

Yelp
The service was rude to begin with. We had some basic menu questions that were met with an unnecessary attitude from our server. During our meal, the bartender picked a fight with an unhappy customer, calling her a, "dickhead". This resulted in drinks being thrown and glasses being broken. The unhappy customer left and returned with her boyfriend who was carrying a gun. The bartender kept antagonizing the angry customer which was incredibly foolish and put every patron and employee at risk. Milkboy, you're lucky we paid for our bill and left a tip.
google avatar

Gus S.

Yelp
Great food. Cool bar. Awesome bartenders. Convenient location. Always a good playlist. Fried chicken sandwich is bomb, and they have waffle fries and tater tots! When it's nice out, they take out the wall length windows. Great for Spring day drinking!
google avatar

Miles A.

Yelp
Pretty cool hangout on south st. Food is decent, and selection is okay. Prices are okay too. Have music too and a nice open section on the downstairs floor.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Secret I learned when I forgot my bank card and Jim's (across the street) only takes cash (ATM machine available in the restaurant), is that if you go to Milkboy across the street you can order a Jim's and get it brought over, for a little more $. Worked for me! Only gave Milkboy 3 stars because I sat and waited nearly 5 minutes before a waitress at stopped by my table; also, the cheese curd was super greasy and gross. Honestly, if you want the cheesesteak, just do yourself a a favor and bring cash and go directly to Jim's! Get the wiz cheesesteak wit (cheesesteak w wiz cheese and fried onions).
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
What's the odd adage? Learn something new everyday. Well, I did learn you can order a Jim's cheeseteak from the Milkboy if you do not want to stand in the line and the staff will bring it to you for $16. Interesting yes and I like that the option is offered that being said I will detail my experience with the Milkboy on 4th street in the below review. Chili - Your getting a cup of chili for $7, the presentation is very good I will give them that but your getting an average bowl of Chili. They should offer hot sauce or jalepenos to spice it up as there is no spice to the chili. I am not a fan of sour cream and you better read through the contents as you are definitely getting some slapped on your soup that brings the temperature down a few degrees with the cold sour cream. I was catching the same vibe as the other location of Milkboy on Chestnut street. Just temper your expectations if you come here it is what it is.
google avatar

Komal R.

Yelp
Drinks are great - we tried the Pharmacist, Large Marge and South street punch and all were great. We also had the buffalo chicken poppers and loaded waffle fries and I loved both but especially the fries. At the end of our meal we also ordered two shots - spicy back and the green tea and both were delicious! I will come back for the shots and the fries for sure!!
google avatar

Jacinta O.

Yelp
A small hole in the wall with a fun vibe. I went there for trivia and the staff were really friendly. Their drinks were nice but not strong.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Dropped by here Saturday night for some drinks with some friends. The bartender recommended The Pharmacist which was bourbon, pineapple, and honey. It was sweet from the honey and a bit tangy from the pineapple which made for a great combination. The place is a little small but there are big open windows/doors that keep the air flowing. Pretty crowded but we managed to snag a table. Overall, had some good vibes and good drinks. The bartender was also super friendly!
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
Was looking for a place vegetarian friendly before meeting our tour guide, and popped in because there was a table free. Initial look at the menu yielded few choices, and then my wife mentioned the Cauliflower Cheesesteak. Mentioned it to me, and the couple seated next to us raived about it, so decided to split a Cauliflower cheesesteak and the waffle fries. Both choices turned out great...and the cheese steak lived up to it's recommendations. Absolutely delicious, and highly recommend!
google avatar

Vichet O.

Yelp
There's not a lot of places in Center City where you can still get a citywide that won't make you wake up the next day, frantically feeling around to make sure that no one's taken your kidneys, and then wish someone had taken your kidneys because screw this hangover, but Milkboy is it. Friendly staff, good selection, good snacks, and a prime location in a part of the city that is desperately trying to be New York cool when Philly chill has always been good enough. I've met one of the best friends I have here, randomly from the internet, in 2012. So, Milkboy has stood the test of time for me. Never change, Milkboy. The South Street location is nice too.
google avatar

Jeff Y.

Yelp
I was honestly fairly excited to try this place as they always seemed to be busy, but we quickly learned that it was not because of the food or service. Our waiter seemed disinterested and we had to wave him down several times to get what we needed, and we kept needing more napkins because the food was so greasy. The fries and the cheesesteak (not Jim's) were just dripping in oil and really had no flavor.
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
I disagree with all the reviews on bad service. We stopped in on a Thursday night for a beer and some food on a walk home. It is always nice when you are sitting with a friend eating good food and drinking good beer when one of you say, "the service here is so good". There was a bartender and a server. They were friendly, yet chill. The server was on point. super welcoming and the perfect level of friendliness. Waters stayed fresh and the bartender even stopped by to wipe our table down after we were done eating. The food was good. The beers were cold. But, I would come back for the service alone. During a time where the service industry is struggling, and the service is spotty, and people are overworked, and places are desperate for people to work, Milkboy was the exception.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent excellent excellent service and I can't remember his name and feel so bad --it was very distinctive and not a typical name , but boy did he make our experience there . He was kind of shorter, short brown hair --great attitude . This kid will go far wherever he goes . I'd like to hire him. There was a bachelorette party going on with all these shrieking girls and he still took it all in stride and I swear he was waiting on 12 tables at once but still paused to ask how my margarita was and if it was too sweet he could remake it ! Whaaaat ? In the middle of a rush. That goes above and beyond in my book. And the smile never left his face . Food was meh--nachos meh, buffalo shrimp overcoated with sauce and unexceptional . Burger was decent . I would come back based on the service . Find this kid and reward him:) He is a real asset to your restaurant and you don't want to lose him.

V T.

Yelp
The one blonde girl was trying remove me by swinging her arms around telling me it wasn't sanitary to let outside food into their bar. They served me a drink and checked for my ID. Had they said anything prior it wouldn't have been a problem. They sat me down, took my order and then closed my check. I had 1 sip and not even sit for 10 minute. With a beanie on her head, no hairnet at all - telling a customer they are not being serve safe? I decided to go, it was a waste of my 15 min break.
google avatar

Briana Christine P.

Yelp
The bar tender is fun and the atmosphere is very chill. I had Brussels sprouts and my husband had Buffalo wings. Both were excellent. I'm definitely coming back whenever I'm in Philly.

Daphne C.

Yelp
Good eats- tempura green beans were awesome and good drinks. The waiter, Jesse, gave great service!

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Probably one of the rudest security guards I've ever met. Been here since they opened and what went from a nice establishment turned into a nasty staff and crew with overpriced food and drinks of "okay" quality. I've had my ID ready at hand to be met with some of the meanest attitudes that literally soured my mood to even eat once I sat down with my friends and family. During every visit. No longer going to this South Street location.

Robert H.

Yelp
Had me wait 10min after ordering to tell me that they ran out of the item I ordered, margarita was very bitter, and fried shrimp was cool with the shell on. Very bad experience food wise outside of the burger.
google avatar

Kiana S.

Yelp
Got here was a bit packed but looked okay. Went to have a girls night and ordered drinks. My drink was $12 and it was nasty, did not like my drink at all. Also there is no women/ men separating bathroom, bathroom was gross. Won't be coming back here again.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
While it's a small space, it's a more than decent bar and kitchen. The service is great, the drinks selection is solid, and the food is probably better than you'd find at most South St locations. It was peculiar that the cheese curds were breaded and fried; however, they were still tasty. The chicken nachos came loaded, which was a pleasant surprise. Definitely a great spot to have a drink, chill with friends, and people watch.
google avatar

Talina G.

Yelp
The cauliflower cheese steak was simply AMAZING! I've walked/ rode by one of these places between Philly & DE County for years & never tried before this week. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Milk boys has a great relaxing atmosphere, the vibes are in large to what you make of it. A great place to start or end the night, and everything in between. Jazmin (Jazmyn?) is a wonderful gal who made us feel welcome and was attentive for anything we needed. If you're around, this is the place to go!
google avatar

Natasha V.

Yelp
Milkboy south street was amazing! Very attentive and down to earth. The vibe was great. We wanted to try the Jim's Philly cheese steaks from across the street which had a HUGE line that wrapped around the corner! But if you dine in a Milkboy they will bring you the sandwhich from across the st! AMAZING!!
google avatar

Lorean M.

Yelp
We had initially tried to go to across the street for some cheesesteaks but the line was out of this world. We ended up walking across the street to Milkboy. The place is on the cozy side but I loved it. I think there was more room upstairs but we were seated immediately right in the front. The waiter was super nice & helpful. We were able to order cheesesteaks from the place across the street- they were delicious and we didn't have to wait!! Definitely will be back- clearly I enjoyed my food bc I didn't even get to take a picture of my food. Lol
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing drinks and awesome guys working are very friendly, great service and great bartender.
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
Stopped by for a drink while showing some out of town friends South Street. The bartender (I forget his name) was so nice and attentive! They have an okay beer selection, with a lot of the options being in cans. We ended up ordering some food because you can get a Jim's steak from this location, which is awesome because you can skip the line at Jim's, have a drink, and the cheesesteak comes with an order of fries. We also shared the cheese curds and they were lightly fried and very cheesy. Would recommend stopping by if Jim's has a long line and you want a good drink!

Yelp
Son...the nachos. Everything else is good for South Street or any other busy spot in Philly. But yo, the nachos are off the chizziff. CHIZIFF It's served on a small tray so you don't feel like a fatass for ordering one to the face. But it's also an excellent shareable as well. When you order it make sure to top of off with some chicken. I mean what else is there really to say about Milkboy? Nachos son...
