A rare fine dining experience in Hawaii! We booked for 6pm to celebrate birthdays, and arrived about 5 minutes early. Lots of parking in the bank parking lot on 9th ave, with street parking if needed.
Miro is subtle and unassuming from the outside, with frosted doors serving as a gateway to warm interiors and friendly faces. The greeters led us to a cozy corner before our server Danielle came by to explain how the prix fixe menu worked ($100/pp). She also offered a number of off-menu specials, such as escargot or brioche with toppings - just make sure you ask about the prices! Actually, just make that a habit, because any add-on or substitution at Miro seems to incur an unspoken upcharge. One day I'll be rich enough to just carelessly say yes to everything.
It would be nice if they had a small info card with the menus to make it easy for servers and diners alike. I'd also note that previous reviews show two prix fixe options, but we were only offered the monthly one.
I asked Danielle about the Cognac used in their cocktails, but she wasn't sure what was used.
We started with a Coffee in Marcona ($20) - almond. vanilla. bourbon. None of the drinks had prices, so I'd go off of that price point. While it's little pricey, the drink was legitimately delicious and unexpectedly strong. Sweet, woody, and savory.
We started with their ahi brioche ($14/p), a beautiful slab of lightly torched, sashimi grade ahi, laid over an avocado spread, atop a nigiri-sized brioche slab. The brioche was crispy, flaky, buttery, and delicious.
Lets get into the courses:
- "Hamachi. Sun-Dried Tomato. Cucumber." Incredibly rich slices of hamachi, resting in a salty, savory broth, with a beautiful color palette. Pea sized pickled cucumber balls just explode with flavor, and another pickled topping injects a fiery spice to the symphony. What a solid start.
- MIRO Sourdough bread - served with salt flakes and furikake butter. Danielle said they used to charge extra for bread, but changed to complimentary. Warm, tangy, and filling - I'm glad they give it to everyone now!
- "Sunchoke. Mushroom. Sweet Onion." Presented in a bowl with a poached egg of sorts - the yolk is perfectly softboiled, with the whites whipped up, above a mix of sunchoke and mushrooms. I've never had or heard of sunchoke before, but it was a lot like potato.
- "Sea Bass. Celery Root. Shio Koji." Embarrassingly enough, I've never had sea bass either - what a great way to try such a light, flavorful fish. It was wrapped in flaky pastry and resting in the shio koji broth, another component I haven't had. Complex and fun.
- "Pork Belly. Green Farro. Date." Unfortunately, the dish I was most looking forward to and was most let down by. The crispy kale, sweet date sauce, and roasted turnip were wonderful. The pork belly was way too fatty, and the farro was mushy and underwhelming.
The SO substituted pork for Wagyu Rib Cap ($35). It was much better than the pork belly, but a pretty steep substitution for two slices of steak.
- "Rice. Mango. Soy." Fun take on a rice pudding, with ice cream, cacao, and somewhat crispy topping. The mango elements were very timid, but I enjoyed the dessert overall.
They also brought out a cute little birthday cream puff, which was a nice gesture for our birthday celebration.
We had an after-dinner Jasmine Dragon Pearl Tea ($6) at Danielle's recommendation. Well brewed and perfect to settle your stomach.
It was a real food safari for us, and we had a great time! Definitely a "special occasion only" price point, but we would definitely return to explore a new menu.
