Steamed Sandwich Restaurant Mister Goose Opens in St. Helens - Eater Portland

"Mister Goose, founded by William Steuernagel, specializes in Midwestern steamed sandwiches inspired by his grandparents’ Kansas City bar. The restaurant is located in St. Helens off Highway 30 and features a limited menu focused on deli meats and Havarti cheese on Franz hoagie rolls, with sides like pickled pepper and olive plate and sweet cucumber salad. The decor is reminiscent of a fast-moving dive bar, aiming to become an instant classic with a welcoming atmosphere for a diverse clientele." - Thom Hilton

Cheese & Crack Co-Owner William Steuernagel’s Favorite Portland Spots - Eater Portland

"You’re getting ready to open your new restaurant, Mister Goose, along Highway 30. It’s going to be in St. Helens. People going out to Astoria need something along that stretch. My grandparents owned a bar in Kansas City in the ‘70s and they made steamed sandwiches, and that’s what we’re gonna do. It’s a hoagie roll with a specialty spread, meat, cheese, pickles, pepperoncini, that’s flash steamed. The bun gets all soft. It’s not something people do in this part of the country, so we’re excited." - Thom Hilton

A simplistic road side sandwich, tots, and drinks stop. The fanfare is about the unique quirky upbeat fun shop to grab a sandwich, few tots, and a cold brew. Mr. Goose features a few seats, a bar, and a few outdoor seating with good amounts of parking. It is worth an experience and a quirky short stop if you're commuting up or down the road and in the mood for a munch. Drinks despite rather inexpensive, the cocktails can use a lot more exquisite shape up and for that matter the food options can use a bit of Oomph... otherwise it's just a sandwich. Staff is quite friendly and lovely. Service is prompt and attentive. All things considered. A very solid 4 stars for the ambiance, quirk, fun, food. A bit of work full 5 stars will be within grabs. Do visit. It is recommended.

Finally made it out to Mister Goose and it was worth the drive. A great dining choice if you’re in the area hiking or kayaking. Not surprising, the sandwiches were great. The fun, inexpensive cocktails were a pleasant surprise! The pickle plate was a nice touch, too.

Absolute gem of a find! 10' from the STP route and will forever be our stop anytime we are in the area. Incredible steamed sandwiches - try the Loose Goose and dip into tomato soup - pickles, and a affordable and tasty drinks. Can't recommend highly enough. These are the places you read about (maybe Instagram nowadays). Will be back.

About 40 minutes outside of Portland and well worth the drive! Quaint house-style bar and restaurant that feels super cozy and welcoming. The steamed sandwiches are delicious! We ordered the house special, Loose Goose, the ham and the pepperoni. They were all delicious!! The cucumber salad is the perfect side to cleanse your palate between bites of rich, cheesy sandwich and the complimentary pickle plate was a delicious way to spice up each bite of sandwich. Cocktails were very tasty as well. The decor is fantastic! I want to take the bar seats home! Loved sitting in the cozy corner booth. The Tricky Triangle game on each table brought back so many childhood memories! Very good signage directing you into the parking lot. Ample parking. Very friendly service!!!

Google
I had the loose goose sandwich and it was absolutely delicious! Paired with a $5 mug of High Life, you really can't beat the prices. The bartender was a lot of fun and the restaurant itself is cozy, clean, and full of really eclectic old relics. The complimentary pickle plate was a nice touch, too. The only thing I didn't love was the macaroni salad (it was void of any flavor but still looked pretty) but considering the price and how wonderful everything else was, I don't mind - definitely look forward to going back and trying out everything else they have to offer!

Google
Greeted by a great bartender and clean surroundings, this place has a tight delicious Midwest sammie menu that satisfies. Great homemade sides! The dirty tots were amazing with the comeback sauce. Can't wait to come again for the cake and more drinks. Quirky collection of decor to keep your eyes busy for hours if you're not into conversation. Oh, and a dedicated Coors tap with absolutely fair pricing! These folks are doing it right!

Google
I ordered the mushroom sandwich. It came with havarti cheese & special sauce on a buttered hoagie bun. I have never tried a steamed sandwich, and I don't know how I can eat an average sandwich ever again. The service was great. She was friendly and kind. Atmosphere is dark and moody with a cozy pub feel. I think it has inspired me to paint my walls dark green.

Google
I am a sandwich enthusiast, so when I read about a steamed sandwich, I was intrigued. We finally stopped in and it did not disappoint. It's definitely yummy. We both got the roast beef, mac salad and tator tots. It comes with a pickle platter, which was fantastic. The mac salad was great too. The cherry limeade was yummy. Intriguing decor and lots to adore. The staff was friendly, service was great and the food was good. Its a small menu, but we'll be back to try the other sandwiches. Definitely worth a stop!

Yelp
A local gem in St Helens. This was an ultimate comfort food. The rolls were so buttery and soft. Both the ground beef and fried shrimp fillings were amazing! We also really enjoyed the sides, potstickers, and the mozzerella sticks. The staff was also very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way back from a Halloween Town adventure. We were in the mood for sandwiches and we are not from this area. We did a quick Google search and found this shop. The lady that took our order was so kind and she was so helpful. The restaurant was fun to be in and had such a cute theme ( who doesn't love geese!) the food was so good. The sandwiches are steamed and served warm. Even my picky girl loved it and that says a lot. Recommend stopping here if you get the chance!

Yelp
Delicious! Freaking love those sandwiches. Always worth the extra drive after hitting the Pumpkin Patch. Excellent service and a cozy little vibe.

Yelp
Fun little hole in the wall place! Service was fantastic and the food was hot. Would definitely stop in again.

Yelp
The reader board outside is spot on. It says hot sandwiches and they're good and cold beer and it is.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way back from Spirit of Halloweentown & have no regrets! We got the turkey & roast beef steamed sandwiches with tots and soup. My highlights were the seasoned rolls they used for the sandwiches & how crispy the tots were! One thing to note is that this is a waiter service restaurant, which we didn't expect--but did end up making the experience even better because our waitress was so kind! We sat on their outdoor patio and she even brought a slice of turkey for our dog. We'd be happy to return if back in the area again!

Yelp
I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting much from this place. I enjoy sandwiches every now and then but this place just never intrigued me. My friend chose this place for her birthday lunch so of course I couldn't disagree. I'm so glad we came, though! The menu is super simple, but even then I had a tough time deciding what it is I wanted. I ended up choosing the shrimp sandwich- it was so delicious!!! I haven't had anything else but my friend said their turkey sandwich, macaroni salad and alcoholic beverages are all good options. Service was good. We ate outside and it was pretty empty when we were there, which we didn't mind. Their outdoor seating has umbrellas for shade! Overall, I enjoyed my meal and will probably go again!

Yelp
After a long road trip we planned to stop for the evening in Saint Helens. On our family road trips we often look for local sports we otherwise can't find at home. My wife found this place and wanted to go because she loved the name. Honestly it was worth it. I had the loose goose I believe it was called so flavorful and delicious. The tots on the side were super crunchy as well. Overall a cute and quant place with excellent food and service. Would absolutely go again.

Yelp
Their loose goose is so delicious. Their complimentary topping platter is super good too. Staff is friendly as well. Their drinks are pretty good too.

Yelp
We love "the Goose" we've been regulars for about a year. We enjoy happy hour. it's one of the most affordable options you will find in town. We always enjoy our server/bartender Sara. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
Great ambiance, people and some seriously stellar steamed sandwiches. The nostalgia is so much fun!

Yelp
You may not think that a simple sandwich with meat, cheese and sauce could make your whole day - but it can. This place has a small menu with big deliciousness. The sides were (almost) as good as the pillowy steamed sandwich and fixings that you could add in if you like. Add the bonus of a retro vibe inside while old Price is Right episodes (with old commercials!) play behind the bar and I've found a new favorite.

Ed T.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Great service and atmosphere...not to mention ice cold High Life! Highly recommend trying the Goose!

Yelp
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. The food isn't bad, just a bit on the plain side. I had a Turkey sandwich , I'll give this place another try for dinner. Bon apetit ;)

Yelp
This place is steamed sandwich heaven. Nestled along HWY 30, this little gem offers delicious steamed sandwiches, homemade sides, and friendly service. The roast beef and pepperoni sandwiches are absolutely mouth watering paired with delicious sides like Mac salad and cucumber salad. We will definitely be regulars @ Gooses.

Yelp
My daughter suggested this cozy new spot for lunch so we trekked out to St. Helens to check it out. We were so pleasantly suprised by the atmosphere here. Wonderful kitchy decor, carefully curated vibes, old school country playing. The sandos were good as well. Dont even get me started about the pickle plate. Lunch was a win!

Yelp
My wife read an article on Eater about this place. We have friends in St Helens so we joined them for lunch. We were very impressed with the excellent service, simple but highly executed food, and whimsical décor. We enjoyed it tremendously. I expect to take the long way home from the coast to stop here for years to come!

Kristie S.

Yelp
A simple menu with good prices, old school ambiance where you have an old school TV sitting high up watching reruns of kid shows. The service was great and quick. Just made you feel like home. The loose goose sandwich was good. Admire the goose painting on the wall by the owner while you're there.

Matthew E.

Yelp
Very enthusiastic five stars. This is our favorite Friday night stop. The drinks are poured strong, the food is reasonably priced and tasty, and the interior is cute. The bartender is always very friendly and attentive. You can't ask for a better stiff drink and sandwich.

Rose F.

Yelp
The food is always so good. The service is quick and they're always so friendly. And I love the decor in there! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
We travel through St. Helen's often and are so happy that we stopped here today. Decor is the perfect combination of thoughtful and playful. The service was great and the steamed sandwiches with pickled fixings hit the spot. Excited to support this local spot!

Yelp
Thank goodness this place came to St Helen's! Friendly staff, good drinks and simple food menu. Comfortable and welcoming to all.

Yelp
Very charming place. Friendly service. Loved the food. Sandwiches are warm with melted cheese and a special house dressing that is a bit tangy. Perfect flavor. Side dishes are everyone's favorite. Lovely mixed drinks. Will be there again

Yelp
BOMB!!! We drove about 40 mins from Portland to get here and it was very much worth it. Simple menu, which I love, and a (imo) thoughtfully decorated restaurant. The menu is right to the point, not a lot of fluff but the food is 10/10. My bf got the turkey w/ 2 sides, tomato soup and mac salad, I got the pepperoni with 1 side, the cucumber salad. Of course we spilt everything and of course, we loved everything. & going back to the way the place is decorated, it was too cool. Little details everywhere that made you feel comfortable (minus the ferby haha). I had a great time and haven't stopped thinking about it since we left. & if you dip the pep sandwich into the tomato soup, it taste like a calzone :) oh! And their drinks are also great!! This place rules. Fr.

Yelp
My roast beef sandwich was amazing! I didn't know what to expect as this was my first steamed sandwich & it was seriously the best. I loved the pickle side dish that it came with on a beautiful silver plate. The macaroni salad was deliciously creamy. I loved the simplicity of the menu. The restaurant decor was transcending. For a second I forgot I was in st.helens! I'm already looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
Nice little spot to stop for lunch, not a whole lot of options but there little steamed sandwiches are pretty tasty. I've tried all but the mushroom and like the roast beef the best. The sides are decent and it's nice to have options also meals come with a house "pickle plate" which was also tasty. Also margaritas are decent and only 7 bucks.

Marsha W.

Yelp
The sandwiches are super good and I love the side of pickles, olives and peppers that come with!

Yelp
Cool new bar in St. Helens! Great sandwiches, full bar and ice cold AC. Keno at the bar and a video lotto room. Had a great time the other night and will be back soon.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Unique sandwiches. They not piled high with meat or normal sandwich toppings but the bread is warm and soft. Very good. We had the cucumber and macaroni salads as sides, also both good. But the food is just part of it. The bar is a cozy spot on a cold day, the whiskey highballs were huge for $7, and John Prine is playing on the radio along with vintage game shows on the tv. I'll be back.

Stevie S.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! My first steamed sandwich and it was so yummy. Everyone should check this place out. The decor and atmosphere was so nostalgic. Cool little place for sure!

Josh L.

Yelp
So I wanted to try this place hoping for a local shop that I want to eat at. Now I can't stop thinking about it. The decor took me back to my childhood and the food albeit simple was next level stuff ( don't forget to ask for the olive tapenade!). 5 star review!! Oh and a cold glass of Miller Lite!!
